<<Escalating Repression: Women's Rights Activists and Political
Prisoners Under Threat in Iran
The clerical regime has intensified its crackdown on women’s rights
activists and political prisoners, targeting individuals with arrests,
prolonged detentions, and harsh sentences. Among the cases highlighting
this repression are the violent arrest of Aida Amouei, a women's rights
activist, and Taekwondo coach in Sanandaj; the prolonged uncertainty
faced by physicist Elnaz Ahmadi, detained for nearly three months in
Evin Prison; and the denial of a retrial for political prisoner Mahnaz
Tarah, who remains incarcerated under severe conditions. These cases
underscore the regime's continued efforts to silence dissent and stifle
advocacy for freedom and justice.
Aida Amouei, 40, Mother of Two, Arrested in Sanandaj
On the evening of Friday, January 17, 2025, Aida Amouei, a women's
rights activist in the city of Sanandaj, was arrested by agents of the
Ministry of Intelligence and transferred to an undisclosed location. At
the time of reporting, no information has been made available about the
reasons for her arrest or her whereabouts. Aida Amouei, 40 years old,
married, and a mother of two, was taken into custody at her workplace, a
Taekwondo club, without any judicial warrant. The arrest was carried out
with the use of force. Aida Amouei is a Taekwondo coach who ceased her
online activities under pressure and threats from the Ministry of
Intelligence. Over the past month, she had been repeatedly threatened by
intelligence agents through phone calls.
Three Months of Uncertainty for Detained Physicist Elnaz Ahmadi
Nearly three months have passed since the arrest and continued
uncertainty surrounding Elnaz Ahmadi. She was initially detained by
intelligence agents and transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, where
she spent almost two months. On December 29, 2024, she was moved to the
women's ward of Evin Prison. However, she continues to be taken daily to
Ward 209 for several hours of interrogation before being returned to her
ward.
Elnaz Ahmadi is 40 years old and holds a Ph.D. in physics.
The charges brought against Elnaz Ahmadi include <assembly and
collusion> and <propaganda against the regime.> Despite these
accusations, judicial and prison authorities have not scheduled a trial
or set a date for her hearing. Nearly three months after her arrest, she
remains in a state of limbo.

Mahnaz Tarrah
Supreme Court Rejects Retrial Request for Political Prisoner Mahnaz
Tarrah
The Supreme Court's Branch 9 has rejected a retrial request for Mahnaz
Tarrah, a political prisoner currently held in Evin Prison. Earlier, in
November 2024, her request for conditional release was denied following
opposition from the Intelligence Organization of the Revolutionary Guard
Corps (IRGC).Mahnaz Tarrah was violently arrested by security forces on
November 13, 2023, while walking on a street in Tehran. She was
subsequently transferred from the Ministry of Intelligence's detention
center, known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison, to the prison's women’s ward
on November 24, 2023.
In January 2024, Branch 26 of Tehran's Revolutionary Court sentenced her
to three years and eight months in prison for <assembly and collusion to
commit crimes> and an additional eight months for <propaganda against
the regime.> Her sentence was later reduced to two years and nine months
following her submission to the court's ruling.>>

<<Two Senior Iranian Judges Shot Dead in Tehran
Two senior judges of the Islamic Republic's Supreme Court , Mohammad
Moghiseh and Ali Razini, were killed in an armed attack in Tehran on
Saturday. Both were high-ranking officials notorious for issuing harsh
sentences, including executions. The attacker used a handgun to carry
out the shootings before taking own life, Fars news agency reported.
Iran's judiciary said a <planned assassination> was carried out by <an
armed infiltrator> inside the Supreme Court building. <Based on
preliminary investigations, the individual in question neither had a
case in the Supreme Court nor was a visitor to its branches,> the
judiciary said. Mohammad Moghiseh, also known as <Nasirian,> also a
cleric, was a notorious violator of human rights through his work as a
judge of the Islamic Revolutionary Court. He issued many death
sentences, long prison terms, and oversaw the abuse of detainees and
their families. His actions placed him on the European Union and United
States sanctions lists. He presided over the trials of many political
prisoners who supported the 2009 Green Movement and were arrested after
protesting the results of that year's presidential elections.
Following his death, former detainees recalled his harsh and abusive
behavior, with some recounting traumatic memories that underscored his
severe and even extrajudicial practices. In recent years, the Iranian
authorities transferred Moghiseh from the Revolutionary Court to the
Supreme Court, where he served as a branch head and judge at the time of
his assassination.
Ali Razini, another infamous judicial official, was assassinated
alongside Maqiseh. At the time of his death, Razini was the head of
Branch 41 of the Supreme Court. Razini was one of the most influential
judicial figures in the Islamic Republic and played a prominent role in
the systematic violation of Iranian citizens' human rights. He was also
sanctioned by the EU and the US officials. Before his tenure at the
Supreme Court, Razini held numerous high-ranking positions, including
Prosecutor of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, Head of the Judicial
Organization of the Armed Forces, Chief Justice of Tehran Province, Head
of the Administrative Justice Court, Chief Judge of the Special Clerical
Court, and Legal Deputy to the Chief Justice.
During the presidency of the Mohammad Khatami, a leading figure in the
Islamic Republic's reformist faction, Razini, as Chief Justice of Tehran
Province, played a role in the arrest and prosecution of journalists and
Khatami supporters. He survived an assassination attempt during this
period, in 1999. Both judges were also heavily implicated in the mass
executions of political prisoners in the summer of 1988. According to
the United Nations Human Rights Office, the Islamic Republic executed
901 people in 2024. Among those executed were 31 women, many of whom
were convicted of murder while defending themselves or their family
members from domestic violence, rape, or forced marriage. While most
executions were for drug-related offenses, the UN also reported that
political dissidents and individuals connected to the 2022 protests were
among those exefor Human Rights, the incident occurred on Friday,
January 17, 2025. Shokri, who had a pre-existing heart condition and
relied on a cardiac pacemaker, experienced a severe health decline and a
heart attack. Despite his critical condition, prison authorities delayed
his transfer to a hospital, ultimately resulting in his death.>>

<<Former Prisoners Recall Brutality of Iran's Killed Judges
Former Iranian prisoners have begun sharing their experiences of having
their cases overseen by two notorious judges who were killed on Saturday
in Tehran. Mohammad Moghiseh and Ali Razini, former torturers at Evin
Prison and high-ranking judges responsible for sentencing thousands of
prisoners, were shot dead on Saturday morning. The assassination of the
senior Islamic Republic judges sparked a wave of reactions on social
media, particularly from political activists and former prisoners they
had sentenced. Mahdieh Golroo, a political activist and former prisoner,
wrote on her X account, "After hearing the news of Mohammad Moghiseh's
death, I remembered how, in a two-minute court session, he told my
husband, 'You're married to her? That's a crime in itself ... you're
going to prison to learn how to control your wife.'" Masoud Kazemi, a
journalist, said, "Moghiseh was the judge in my case. He once said, 'We
should put gunpowder in your mouth and blow it up.'" Moghiseh was a
notorious human rights violator in Iran. As a judge in the Islamic
Revolutionary Court, he issued many death sentences, long prison terms,
and oversaw the abuse of detainees and their families. His actions
placed him on the European Union and United States sanctions lists. He
presided over the trials of many political prisoners who supported the
Green Movement and were arrested after protesting the results of the
2009 presidential elections. Mahmoud Beheshti Langeroudi, a teachers'
union activist, recalled his courtroom encounter with Moghiseh. He said,
"In court, I told him, 'I do not recognize you as a legitimate judge and
will not answer your questions.'" In response, Moghiseh sentenced
Langeroudi to five years in prison, a ruling upheld by the Supreme
Court. Moghiseh also issued harsh verdicts against members of religious
minorities in Iran. Iqan Shahidi, a former Baha'i prisoner, said, "July
28, 2011: Moghiseh said, 'Are you a Baha'i?' I said, 'That has nothing
to do with my charges.' He said, 'I'm asking personally, are you a
Baha'i?' I said, 'Yes.' He replied, 'That's enough for me to sentence
you to five years.' I asked, 'Is being a Baha'i a crime?' He said, 'Baha'is
are spies.' I said, 'All of them?' He said, 'Yes.' I asked, 'Even my
one-year-old niece?' After pausing, he said, 'Yes.'" Shahidi added, "I
said, 'Maybe one or two Baha'is could be spies, but how can an entire
community of 300,000 people all be spies?' He said, 'They are.' I said,
'Then why don't you arrest all of them?' He said, 'We will.' I said, 'If
these spies convert to Islam, are they no longer spies?' He said, 'Shut
up.'" Mehdi Mousavi, a poet and songwriter who was forced to flee Iran
due to a prison sentence, said, "Two years of psychological torture
during court sessions and fabricated accusations flashed before my
eyes."
Both Razini and Moghiseh were influential and controversial figures in
Iran's judiciary. Their careers were marked by key roles in suppressing
dissent and issuing severe sentences, including executions.>>

<<Rights Groups Condemn Crackdown on Arab Activists in Iran
A coalition of 14 human rights organizations has condemned what they
describe as a systematic campaign targeting Arab activists in Iran’s
Khuzestan province, amid reports of widespread arrests and allegations
of torture. The organizations said that Iranian authorities are
attempting to “undermine the cultural, social, and political identity”
of the region’s Arab population through mass detentions. Detainees have
been moved to unknown locations with no information provided about their
status, raising concerns about potential abuse. The organizations’
statement comes as new details emerged about the torture of Mokhtar
Alboushoukeh, a prisoner in Ahvaz’s Sheiban prison. According to
sources, Alboushoukeh endured 12 days of abuse at a cyber police
detention center. He reported being repeatedly struck in the abdomen,
despite informing officers of a severe hernia condition. Over 19 Arab
artists, poets, and social activists have been detained in recent
operations across Khuzestan, with approximately 100 others summoned by
intelligence agencies, according to rights monitors. The Karun Human
Rights Organization reported that arrests have occurred in multiple
cities, including Ahvaz, Shadegan, Ramshir, Shushtar, Khorramshahr, and
Susangerd. Ahvaz’s public prosecutor has acknowledged the detention of
182 people, labeling them as “elements disrupting security,” according
to state news agency ISNA. The rights organizations called the crackdown
a violation of Iran’s international obligations and urged immediate
action from global human rights bodies to secure the unconditional
release of those detained.>>

Rising Persecution of Baha'i Women
Iranwire - January 21, 2025
<<UN Experts Condemn Rising Persecution of Baha'i Women in Iran
United Nations human rights experts have expressed concern over the
increasing systematic persecution of women from Iran's Baha'i religious
minority. The experts report that Baha'i women, who make up two-thirds
of all Baha'i prisoners in Iran, are subjected to a range of systematic
targeting measures, including arbitrary arrests, interrogations, home
raids, and enforced disappearances. Many are being held without due
process and at undisclosed locations. "In the larger context of the
targeting of women in Iran and the challenges with gender equality, this
dramatic rise in persecution against Baha'i women is an alarming
escalation," the UN experts said in a statement. The persecution extends
beyond imprisonment, with widespread restrictions on daily life. Baha'i
women are systematically denied access to higher education and face
economic and cultural limitations, including bans from university
attendance and public employment solely due to their faith. The experts
expressed concern over the use of vague charges such as "threat to
national security" or "propaganda against the Islamic Republic" to
restrict religious freedoms. "The experts have raised their concerns
with the Iranian government. In its response, the government asserted
the full citizenship rights of Baha'is and claimed they face no
restrictions," the statement reads. "In the same week as the receipt of
the government’s response, 10 Baha’i women in Isfahan were reportedly
sentenced to a total of 90 years in prison, fined, banned from travel,
had personal and family assets permanently confiscated, subsequent to
their alleged arbitrary arrest and torture in Dolat Abad prison." For
decades, Baha'is have faced systematic discrimination in Iran, as the
Islamic Republic does not recognize their faith. The government often
accuses Baha'is of being spies or opposing the regime, but the Baha'i
International Community asserts that no evidence has been provided to
support these claims. In the past two years, the Iranian government has
intensified its crackdown on members of the Baha'i faith, imprisoning
dozens on spurious charges, denying them access to higher education and
livelihoods, and confiscating or destroying their properties.>>

The Islamic Republic’s judiciary has sentenced two lawyers to prison and
imposed additional penalties in separate cases in Tehran and Mashhad.
The Tehran Court of Appeals, Branch 36, upheld the original sentence
against Taher Naqavi, a lawyer currently held in Evin Prison. Judge
Abolqasem Salavati had previously sentenced Naqavi to six years in
prison, a two-year ban on leaving the country, and deprivation of social
rights and political party membership for two years. "Supporting news
networks and television channels outside the country" was cited as one
of the reasons for upholding the original verdict, according to the
HRANA human rights organization. Meanwhile, Khosrow Alikordi, a lawyer
detained in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, received a one-year prison
sentence from Branch 5 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court. The court
accused Alikordi of "propaganda against the Islamic Republic," citing
"posts shared on social media" as evidence. Alikordi had represented

Dr. Asad Ghafouri, a university lecturer and one of the administrators
