Woman Sets Herself Ablaze
NRCI - January 14, 2025 - In Women's news
<<Tragedy in Qom's Langarud Prison: Woman Sets Herself Ablaze in
Protest, Faces Inhumane Treatment
On Friday, January 10, 2025, a female prisoner named Fatemeh Lotfi set
herself on fire in Langarud Prison, Qom, in protest against her
prolonged uncertainty and lack of resolution regarding her case. Instead
of transferring her to a burn center, prison officials sent her to a
psychiatric hospital. After just one day and without receiving any
proper treatment, she was returned to prison and confined to solitary
confinement. Fatemeh Lotfi, imprisoned on charges related to drug
offenses, suffered severe burns, blisters, and infections after the
incident. Nevertheless, the prison staff cruelly moved her to the
psychiatric hospital without appropriate medical care. Despite her
critical condition, she was brought back to Langarud Prison the next
day, shackled hands, and feet, and left in solitary confinement. In a
shocking display of neglect, prison personnel reportedly told her, <Peel
off your own blisters,> while depriving her of even basic medication.
The 42-year-old prisoner, in a phone call to her relatives, described
her agony in a faint voice weakened by pain:
"My wounds, infections, and burns are so severe that I'm dying from the
pain, the burning, and the infections."
Fatemeh Lotfi is the mother of a young son who is also incarcerated. She
was accused of attempting to bring drugs into the prison for her son, a
charge she has consistently denied. Her unresolved legal status has kept
her in custody for an extended period. On the day of her
self-immolation, she used gas in the prison kitchen to carry out the
act. Langarud Prison, where Fatemeh Lotfi is held, houses over 2,500
inmates. Each ward contains only 10 toilets and six showers, with hot
water available between 2 PM and 5 PM daily. Outside of these hours,
prisoners must endure without hot water. More than 20 inmates are
crammed into each room in overcrowded conditions, yet only 15 beds are
available. Those without beds are forced to sleep on the floor. This
tragedy highlights the appalling living conditions and systemic neglect
in Iran’s prisons, where even the most basic human rights are denied to
inmates. Fatemeh Lotfi's harrowing ordeal exemplifies the extreme
suffering endured by prisoners in Langarud and demands urgent attention
to the inhumane treatment and neglect pervasive in such facilities.>>

Three Teenage Girls Attempt Suicide
NCRI - January 11, 2025 - in Women's News
<<Tragedy in Karaj: Three Teenage Girls Attempt Suicide, One Loses Her
Life
On the evening of Thursday, January 9, 2025, three teenage girls in
Karaj simultaneously attempted to end their lives by jumping from the
roof of a residential building. Thanks to the quick response of
onlookers and firefighters, two of the girls were rescued. However, the
third girl tragically jumped before she could be stopped. Despite being
rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to her injuries due to the
severity of the trauma.
The identity of the deceased teenager remains unknown at this time.

A victim of social and economic pressures
Many Iranian women and girls feel they have no choice but to resort to
suicide due to immense social and economic pressures.
More than 13 people in Iran commit suicide daily, with the majority
between the ages of 15 and 35. According to the Iranian Ministry of
Health, 100,000 people attempted suicide in 2018. On average, 125
Iranians per 100,000 people attempt suicide, with six losing their
lives. (Persian Wikipedia on suicide in Iran). This year, beyond the
tragic suicides among young people and women, we are witnessing the
alarming phenomenon of suicides among medical residents (medical
students), nurses, and doctors. According to the regime's Jam-e-Jam
newspaper (January 10, 2024), suicide is the fifth leading cause of
death among teenagers and young adults, with 52% of those committing
suicide being girls. On August 28, 2024, the state-run Ham Mihan
newspaper reported that 7,000 people had committed suicide in 2023, with
twenty times that number attempting suicide.>>

Maryam Akbari Monfared
NCRI - January 12, 2025 - in Women's News
<<Authorities at Qarchak Prison Deny Political Prisoner Maryam Akbari
Monfared In-Person Visits with Her Family and Children
Reports indicate that political prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared has been
denied in-person visits with her family and children since her transfer
to Qarchak Prison and continues to be held in solitary confinement.
Officials at Qarchak Prison in Varamin refuse to grant Akbari Monfared
permission for in-person meetings with her family, despite repeated
requests. Hossein Taj, the lawyer representing Maryam Akbari Monfared,
stated, "My client, after completing her 15-year prison sentence without
a single day of furlough, was transferred from exile in the Prison of
Semnan to Qarchak Prison to serve an additional two-year sentence. Since
her transfer, her family has not been allowed any in-person visitation."
He added, "Although her husband obtained a court order from the
prosecutor's office permitting visitation, prison officials claim that
an inquiry to the Civil Registry failed to verify their marital status.
As a result, they denied the request for an in-person meeting. However,
her two daughters have been granted booth visits." According to the
regulations of the Iranian Prisons Organization, general booth visits
are allowed weekly, and in-person or private meetings can be granted
under certain conditions. Customarily, prisoners are granted in-person
visits once a month, yet this policy has not been applied to Maryam
Akbari Monfared at Qarchak Women's Prison. The clerical regime is using
these excuses to abuse this resilient political prisoner and put further
pressure on her.
The 15-year odyssey of Maryam Akbari Monfared
The husband and daughters of Maryam Akbari Monfared, a family she has
missed for 15 years.
Maryam Akbari Monfared completed her 15-year prison term on October 11,
2021, after being exiled to Semnan Prison without receiving any
furlough. However, due to a new case fabricated against her, she was
transferred to Qarchak Prison on October 23, 2024, to serve an
additional two-year sentence. In late June 2024, Maryam Akbari Monfared
faced another legal case to confiscate her and her family's assets.
According to Shargh news agency, the Execution of Imam Khomeini's Order
Headquarters filed a complaint seeking the seizure of her property.>>

<<Iranian-American Journalist Criticizes U.S. Inaction on His Detention
in Iran
Iranian-American journalist Reza Valizadeh has criticized the Biden
administration from Tehran's Evin Prison, accusing U.S. authorities of
failing to take meaningful steps to address his detention in Iran. In a
phone message from prison, Valizadeh expressed frustration with the U.S.
State Department's limited response to his case. "The U.S. State
Department, after releasing a statement about the illegality of my
arrest and conviction by the Islamic Republic, has taken no effective
action to follow up on my case," he said. The former Radio Farda

sentence includes additional restrictions: a two-year ban on living in
Tehran and neighboring provinces, a travel ban, and prohibitions on

<<Iranian Political Prisoner Held Incommunicado for Over 60 Days
A political prisoner with multiple health conditions has been held
incommunicado for over 60 days in Iran, raising alarm among his family
members, who have no information about his whereabouts or medical
condition. Akbar Bagheri, arrested in Tehran on November 10, 2024,
suffers from various medical issues, including blood-related conditions,
intestinal problems, liver issues, and hemorrhoids, according to the
HRANA human rights news agency. Despite repeated inquiries from
Bagheri's family and legal representatives, judicial authorities have
provided no information about his location or condition. Bagheri
previously served time in prison following his arrest in 2017, when
Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced him to nine years
for <propaganda against the Islamic Republic> and <collusion and
assembly against national security.> During his earlier imprisonment,
Bagheri was transferred from Evin Prison to Rajai Shahr Prison in Karaj

<<Swedish-Iranian Facing Execution Slams Sweden for Neglect
A Swedish-Iranian academic facing execution in Iran has accused the
Swedish government of treating him as a <second-class citizen> in a
newly released audio message marking his 53rd birthday. Ahmadreza
Djalali, imprisoned in Iran since 2016, criticized Swedish authorities
for failing to secure his release during recent prisoner exchanges.
"Swedish government officials are aware of my situation, but nothing has
been done to improve my condition," Djalali said in the recording. "It
appears that the potential consequences for me as a Swedish citizen -
whether execution or worsening health - do not matter to Swedish
authorities," he added. Djalali, a doctor and university professor of
Iranian origin with Swedish citizenship, was arrested by the Ministry of
Intelligence in April 2016 while traveling to Iran to attend a
scientific conference. After nine months in prison, including three
months in solitary confinement, Djalali was sentenced to death on
February 31, 2017, on charges of <espionage and selling information to
Israel> and <corruption on Earth>. In an audio clip obtained by IranWire
from Iran's Evin Prison last year, he demanded answers from the Swedish
government for <leaving him behind> following a prisoner swap. "Mr.
Prime Minister, you decided to leave me behind under the huge risk of
execution," he said. "You did not act to improve my condition or cancel
the death sentence before the swap took place." >>

Satrapi has refused the Legion d'Honneur, France's highest order of
merit, to protest the country's "hypocrisy" in its dealings with Iran.
In a letter to the French Minister of Culture posted on social media on

Kamkans
Jinha - Womens News Agency - January 14, 2025 - by AMENE IZEDI
<<Kamkans performs concert in Tehran after six years
The Kamkans, a Kurdish music group from Rojhelat Kurdistan, performed a
concert called "Living Fire" in Tehran on January 12, after a six-year
hiatus.
Tehran- Since the 1979 Iranian Revolution, women in Iran have been
required to wear the hijab and banned from singing solo in public.
Despite the ban, women in Rojhelat (Eastern Kurdistan or Iranian
Kurdistan) have performed all art forms, especially music. Now, there
are many famous musicians and musical groups. The Kamkars, a musical
group consisting of women and men from Rojhilate Kurdistan, is one of
these groups. The group, formed in 1989 as a musical family group, has
released more than 20 musical albums. On January 12, the group performed
a concert called "Living Fire" in Tehran, after a six-year hiatus.
Maryam Ebrahimpour, a vocalist of the group, made a speech at the
concert, expressing her wish for an Iran, where all women can sing
freely. At the concert, two poems by Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad
were also sung. The group previously released a musical album called "Agire
Zindi (English: Living Fire)" in the memory of Kurdish musician Ali
Merdan. The group performed at the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony

The Islamic Republic's armed forces shot and killed a Baluch father of
three on Sunday night while in southeastern Iran, according to a human
rights monitoring group. Aref Kurd, 35, died after security forces

facility. Authorities have not released Kurd's body to his family. He
was a resident of Garak village near Sangar, Khash, in Iran's Sistan and
Baluchistan province. The death marks the latest in a series of deadly
shootings targeting Baloch civilians. Hengaw reports that at least six

<<Retired Teachers and Telecom Workers Protest in Iran Over Pension
Reforms
Retired teachers and telecommunications workers held coordinated
protests across Iran on Monday, demanding improved benefits and the
implementation of long-promised pension reforms. Former educators
gathered outside the Ministry of Education in Tehran, while retired
telecom workers demonstrated in multiple cities, including Kermanshah,
Sanandaj, Tehran, Isfahan, and Ahvaz. The telecom retirees are pressing
for the full implementation of a 2007 cabinet resolution and compliance
with regulations issued by Iran Telecom's former board in 2010. Their
protests specifically target the company's major stakeholders: the
Execution of Imam Khomeini's Order, an organization under Supreme Leader
Ali Khamenei's authority, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps'
Cooperative Foundation. Protesters criticized these organizations'
control over Iran Telecom, claiming their rights have been neglected
despite previous agreements. The demonstrations mark the latest in a
series of pension-related protests in Iran as retirees struggle with
rising living costs amid ongoing economic challenges.>>

No Executions Tuesdays
Iranwire - January 14, 2025
<<Iran's Prisoner-Led Anti-Death Penalty Campaign Expands to 34 Prisons
A prisoner-led campaign against capital punishment in Iran expanded on
Tuesday, with four additional prisons joining the weekly strike,
bringing the total number of participating prisons to 34. Inmates from
Havigh Prison in northern Talesh, the women's ward of Adelabad Prison in
Shiraz, Joveyn Prison in Razavi Khorasan, and Borazjan Prison in Bushehr
province joined the "No Executions Tuesdays" campaign in its 51st week.
The campaign's growth comes amid heightened concerns over recently
confirmed death sentences for four political prisoners: Behrouz Ehsani,
Mehdi Hassani, Pakhshan Azizi, and Mojahed Korkor. Campaign organizers
report that Iranian authorities have carried out over 102 executions in
January 2025 alone.
Prisoners across major facilities, including Evin, Ghezelhesar, Greater
Tehran, and numerous provincial prisons, are marking their protest
through hunger strikes. The movement has gained momentum as participants
say that the Iranian government has increased executions to suppress
dissent amid mounting economic, social, and political challenges.
Campaign organizers stress that opposing the death penalty requires
widespread public support and collective action. They have called for
broader solidarity in their efforts to end capital punishment in Iran.
The protest now spans facilities across multiple provinces, including
Tehran, Isfahan, West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, Khuzestan, and
Khorasan Razavi.>>

<<Iranian Bodybuilder Attempts Suicide in Prison Over Medical Neglect
A former Iranian bodybuilding champion imprisoned in Tehran's Evin
prison attempted suicide on Monday. The act of protest was in response
to what he described as inadequate medical care for his deteriorating
health conditions. Prison officials transferred Khaled Pirzadeh to a
hospital where he received stitches for his wounds before being returned
to custody. Before the incident, Pirzadeh had posted an audio message on
Instagram. In this message, he appealed to the Iranian people and
Hosseinollah Hayat al-Ghaib, Director-General of Tehran Province
Prisons. He warned that his life was in danger due to a lack of access
to essential medications, including Depakene 500 for seizure control and
an asthma inhaler. Pizadeh said that prison authorities would be held
responsible for any harm that befell him as a result of medical neglect.

Baha'i Man Begins Serving Seven-Year Sentence in Iran
Sirus Zabihi Moghadam, a 64-year-old member of Baha'i religious
minority, reported to Vakilabad Prison on Monday to begin serving a
seven-year sentence on national security charges. The Mashhad
Revolutionary Court convicted Moghadam of <establishing and
participating in opposition groups under the pretext of forming and
organizing Baha'i institutions with the intent to disrupt national
security.> He received a seven-year sentence for this charge and an
additional year for <propaganda against the Islamic Republic.> Under
Article 134 of Iran's Islamic Penal Code, he will serve the longer of
the two sentences. The case faced several legal challenges before
reaching its conclusion. While the Supreme Court initially overturned
the verdict and ordered a review, the 37th Branch of the Khorasan Razavi
Appeals Court upheld the original sentence. Authorities first arrested
Moghadam at his Mashhad home on September 24, 2022, during nationwide
protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. He was
released on bail after 73 days in detention. This imprisonment adds to
Moghadam's history of confrontations with Iranian authorities. Since the
1980s, he has faced multiple arrests and already served more than six
years in prison, according to sources familiar with his case. The
government has intensified its crackdown on members of the Baha'i faith,
imprisoning dozens on spurious charges over the past two years, denying
them access to higher education and livelihoods, and confiscating or
destroying their personal properties.>>

<<Prisoner Dies in Iran After Denied Medical Care
A female prisoner has died at Tehran's Qarchak Prison after being
repeatedly denied access to external medical care, according to human
rights sources. Farzaneh Bijanipour lost consciousness on Sunday evening
and was pronounced dead after being transferred to the prison's medical
facility.
The Bidarzani human rights website reports that prison medical staff
accused Bijanipour of feigning illness when she sought help the previous
evening, providing only painkillers despite her deteriorating condition.
In protest of her death, fellow inmates in Ward 6, where Bijanipour was
held, launched a hunger strike on Sunday. The protesters said that
prison authorities consistently denied Bijanipour's requests for
transfer to an external medical facility, even as her health worsened.
Human rights organizations have long criticized what they describe as
the systematic denial of adequate medical treatment to prisoners,
characterizing it as a human rights violation. Bijanipour, serving a
sentence for non-political crimes, first reported feeling unwell on
Saturday evening. After being dismissed by medical staff and given only
basic pain medication, her condition continued to worsen until her death
the following day.>>
