Jina Amini
Preface: the murdering of Jina Amini in september '21 by the basij for
apparently wearing her hijab wrongfully led to the women-led revolution
'Zan, Zendegi, Azadi (in English Woman, Life, Freedom' against the
mullahs' regime. A revolution which, despite the immense crackdown by
the iranian forces and the hundreds of dissent people being killed,
blinded, tortured and jailed, to this very day the revolution has not
been silenced and in all force continues under the motto "Give in or go
Away".
This special wants to highlight 3 very, in my opinion, important
'spokeswomen' who very much stand out for their bravery if not heroism
as they relentlessly, and knowing they are risking limb and life, keep
fighting against the regime and this because they know they're not
alone.
In other words: its a Sisters 4 Each other, Sisters 4 All struggle which
for sure will lead to the downfall of the regime.

<<In a Letter From Evin, Varisheh Moradi Frames Her Death Sentence as
Fight Against Oppression
In a letter from Tehran’s Evin Prison, Iranian aid worker Varisheh
Moradi, who has been sentenced to death, said her case represents a
broader struggle against state suppression in Iran. “For us, the
imprisoned women fighters, this sentence is not just for me and my
fellow inmates: it represents a verdict against an entire society,”
Moradi writes. Despite facing execution, Moradi’s letter strikes a note
of resistance, pointing to growing domestic and international support
for abolishing death sentences in Iran. She highlighted recent strikes
in Kurdistan as evidence of widespread civil resistance against the
regime. “Society supports us, and this solidarity is a powerful
expression of the ongoing civil struggle against the tyranny of the
regime in Iran,” Moradi writes. Moradi was sentenced to death in
November by Tehran’s Revolutionary Court on charges of <armed
rebellion.> Her legal troubles began on August 1, 2023, when
intelligence security forces abducted her while she was traveling from
Marivan to Sanandaj. According to the Hengaw human rights organization,
Moradi endured severe torture at the Sanandaj Intelligence Department’s
detention center, including an incident where she reportedly vomited
blood and lost consciousness. After spending five months in solitary
confinement in Evin Prison’s Ward 209, controlled by the Ministry of
Intelligence, Moradi was transferred to the women’s ward in December
2023.

Jina Amini’s father
Medyanews - January 25, 2025
<<Iranian court targets Jina Amini’s father over protest against Azizi,
Moradi’s death sentences
Amjad Amini, the father of Jina Amini, revealed that Iran’s judiciary
has charged him with “propaganda against the regime” after he protested
the death sentence of Pakhshan Azizi. In a post on his official
Instagram account, Amini explained that he had been summoned to court
twice. Initially, he was accused of “spreading falsehoods”, but just two
days later, the charges were escalated to include “propaganda against
the regime”.
Amjad Amini, the father of Jina (Mahsa) Amini, who died in morality
police custody in 2022, has revealed that Iran’s judiciary has charged
him with “propaganda against the regime” after his protest against the
death sentence handed to Pakhshan Azizi. Amini shared on his Instagram
that, after being summoned to the prosecutor’s office on 18 January, he
was initially accused of “spreading falsehoods”. Just two days later, a
further charge of “propaganda against the system [state]”, was added,
resulting in two separate cases being filed against him—one in the
Criminal Court and another in the Revolutionary Court of Saqqez. Amini
explained that the charges arose from a photo he posted on Instagram
concerning Azizi’s death sentence. Reflecting on the grief he and his
wife have endured since Jina’s death, he wrote:
“In this troubled country, there is no hope for third-class citizens.
There is no lawyer, no judge, no judiciary—because the intelligence
agency acts as the plaintiff, prosecutor, and judge.”
On 11 January 2025, Amini voiced his profound outrage on Instagram
following the confirmation of Pakhshan Azizi’s death sentence:
“The deeply distressing news of the unjust and merciless confirmation of
the death sentence for the innocent Iranian Kurdish woman, Ms. Pakhshan
Azizi, a devoted and empathetic social worker, is so egregiously cruel
that it strikes at the very core of human decency, leaving one stunned
by the appalling extent of such brutality and inhumanity.”
Protests continue to erupt across Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat) in
response to the death sentences of Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi.
Reports suggest that nearly 20 individuals have been arrested, with
others summoned by the Intelligence Directorate in Kurdish cities.
Concerns over the possible executions of Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan
Azizi, two Kurdish women political prisoners, have intensified. Amini,
who has consistently used Instagram to voice his opposition, had
previously marked the anniversary of his daughter’s death and expressed
his outrage at the imprisonment of journalists Niloufar Hamedi and Elahe
Mohammadi, as well as the death sentence imposed on rapper Tomaj Salehi.>>

<<Narges Mohammadi Calls for Criminalization of Gender Apartheid
Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has urged French legislators
to criminalize gender apartheid in a virtual address from Tehran.
“Fighting gender apartheid is not merely a struggle for women’s
liberation from systemic oppression; it is an essential step toward
achieving democracy, peace, and justice. One cannot oppress and enslave
half of society while speaking of democracy, freedom, and equality,” she
said.
Mohammadi denounced the regime’s escalating repression, focusing on the
death sentences against political prisoners Pakhshan Azizi and Varisheh
Moradi. “The Iranian regime is exacting revenge on women for the ‘Woman,
Life, Freedom’ movement. Pakhshan Azizi and Varisheh Moradi, detained in
Evin Prison’s women’s ward, now face the looming threat of execution.
The regime wields the noose as a tool of terror to break the resolve of
Iran’s brave and conscientious women,” she added. Mohammadi, a prominent
human rights activist, was temporarily released from prison in December.
The Tehran prosecutor’s office suspended her sentence based on a
forensic medical opinion following her recent surgery to remove a tumor
and undergo a bone graft. She urged the French Parliament, Senate, and
the broader international community to adopt “a resolute stance” on
human rights in any negotiations with the Islamic Republic. “Make human
rights a prerequisite and the central focus of all negotiations,” she
said. “To stop the ever-increasing executions and to achieve human
rights and women’s rights, put pressure on the Islamic Republic.
Prioritize international mechanisms such as universal jurisdiction to
hold regime officials accountable, rather than normalizing a regime
responsible for crimes against humanity.”>>

<<Death Sentence Upheld for Iranian Aid Worker Despite Legal Concerns
Iran's Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence for Pakhsan Azizi, a
humanitarian aid worker from Mahabad, despite significant procedural
concerns raised by her legal team, her lawyer Amir Raisian announced.
Branch 39 of the Supreme Court confirmed the verdict, which includes an
additional four-year prison term, without addressing what Raisian
described as numerous procedural and flaws in the case. The original
sentence was issued by Tehran's Revolutionary Court on charges of <armed
rebellion through membership in opposition groups.> Raisian stated that
his client's activities in northern Syria were strictly humanitarian,
focusing on providing aid in refugee camps for those displaced by ISIS.
"There was no military or political involvement," he said, pointing to a
lack of evidence for the charges. Azizi, a resident of Mahabad, was
arrested by security forces in Tehran on August 4, 2023, and
subsequently transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison. She was previously
detained by security forces on November 16, 2009, and released on bail
after four months.>>

The Women's Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran

Court. It urges the United Nations, its relevant bodies, especially the

the human rights situation in Iran, and all organizations defending
human and women's rights to take immediate action to save Pakshan’s life

<<Iran's condemned political prisoners granted family visits for
mother's day
Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi, two female Kurdish political
prisoners sentenced to death and held in Iran's notorious Evin Prison,
have both been allowed one-hour visits from their families, nine months
after their previous visits. On Sunday 22 December 2024, Warisheh Moradi,
a member of the Free Women’s Society of East Kurdistan (KJAR), and
Pakhshan Azizi, another Kurdish socio-political woman activist, both
sentenced to death on charges of "rebellion", were allowed one-hour
visits from their families in Tehran's Evin Prison on the occasion of
Iran's Mother's Day. Moradi's cousin Khaled Ali Panah was interviewed
for television regarding the visit: "Nine months after Warisheh's last
meeting with her family, her relatives were finally able to see her for
an hour on Sunday 22 December," he said. He further disclosed that
Warisheh has been deprived of medical treatment despite suffering from
severe digestive issues. Regarding efforts to overturn her death
sentence, Ali Panah said: "Warisheh's family remains in constant contact
with both of her lawyers to seek a reconsideration of the charge of
<rebellion>, as Warisheh has never participated in armed conflict
against the Islamic Republic of Iran." He added that her legal team has
appealed to the Supreme Court of Iran to challenge the ruling. He noted
in another part of the interview that Azizi’s family had also had the
opportunity to visit her. Before her family visit, Moradi had managed to
send a number of short messages out from Evin prison, in which she
referred to the 35% rise in the number of executions of female prisoners
in Iran. She wrote: "The Islamic Republic of Iran is retracing the path
of the 1980s, continuing to kill prisoners and freedom fighters while
waging wars beyond its borders. History must not be allowed to repeat
itself," adding, "I have no regrets. I will fight against all forms of
oppression targeting women, from Kurdistan to Balochistan, and from Iran
to Afghanistan, until the ideals of freedom are fully realised."
Meanwhile, another female political prisoner and Nobel Peace Prize
laureate Narges Mohammadi, who has been granted a 21-day temporary
release from Evin Prison for medical treatment, met with the Speaker of
the Norwegian Parliament Massoud Garakhani, where she highlighted the
plight of the two Kurdish women. She later commented on X, formerly
Twitter: "As I speak to you, cellmates, Pakhshan Azizi and Varisheh
[sic] Moradi, are facing execution sentences, 5 of my cellmates are
suffering from serious health conditions & many are being denied access
to medical care."
Human rights activists assert that the pressure and restrictions imposed
on political prisoners are part of the strategy of the security
apparatus to force them to capitulate, and that the denial of visiting
rights, communication and medical care remain a tool of repression
against them, despite persistent domestic and international protests.
The cases of Moradi and Azizi consistently draw widespread condemnation
from human rights organisations as glaring examples of human rights
violations in Iran.>>

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - December 12, 2024
<<Campaign to revoke Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence gains momentum
More than 300 activists advocating for women’s rights, workers,
teachers, and retirees in Iran have launched a campaign urging the
immediate revocation of Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence. Azizi, a
Kurdish political prisoner, was sentenced to death by the judiciary of
Islamic Republic of Iran earlier this year. According to reports
received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, activists from
diverse social and professional sectors have signed a petition calling
for Azizi's death sentence to be overturned. The petition asserts that
she was "arrested and sentenced to death on charges of rebellion (baghi)
solely for her voluntary and humanitarian activities among the refugees
of the ISIS war." The signatories criticized the rapid judicial process
in Azizi's case, as highlighted by her legal defense team, and warned of
the urgent risk of her execution. In their appeal, they wrote: "We, the
undersigned, demand the immediate revocation of Pakhshan Azizi's death
sentence and urge everyone to unite in saving her life."
Azizi, detained in Evin Prison for over 155 days, has been denied family
visits and legal counsel throughout her imprisonment. Until late
October, she was also deprived of the right to phone calls. Her lawyers,
Amir Raeesian and Maziar Tatari, recently expressed cautious optimism
about the possibility of overturning the rebellion charge and avoiding
the death penalty. However, they warned against hasty judicial
proceedings that might ignore critical evidence submitted to the Supreme
Court. Azizi's death sentence, handed down on Wednesday, August 14,
2024, on charges of rebellion, was followed by an additional six-month
prison sentence for <prison riots> stemming from a case in Branch 3 of
Evin Prison's Prosecutor's Office. Arrested on August 4, 2023, in
Tehran’s Kharazi Township by Ministry of Intelligence forces, Azizi was
held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison before being transferred to the women's
ward on December 11, 2023. Azizi's activism dates back to her arrest on
November 16, 2009, during a Kurdish student protest at the University of
Tehran against the execution of Kurdish political prisoners. Released on
bail after four months of detention, she later left Iran due to ongoing
threats and pressure from security agencies. While abroad, Azizi
conducted research on women's rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and
Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) and worked on improving conditions for
vulnerable populations through social initiatives.>>

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 10 Dec 2024
<<More than seven months without visits for death row political prisoner
Varisheh Moradi
Varisheh Moradi, a Kurdish political prisoner, women’s rights advocate,
and member of the Free Women’s Society of Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR), has
been deprived of her fundamental right to in-person visits for over
seven months. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization
for Human Rights, Varisheh Moradi, from Sanandaj (Sine) and currently
held in Evin Prison, has been denied family and legal visits for the
past 218 days.
This restriction was initially imposed by Judge Abolqasem Salavati and
remains in effect under his directive. On Thursday, October 10, 2024,
coinciding with the "World Day Against the Death Penalty," Moradi
initiated a 20-day hunger strike to protest the issuance and
implementation of death sentences by the Islamic Republic of Iran. In
November 2024, Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided
over by Judge Abolqasem Salavati, sentenced Varisheh Moradi to death on
charges of <baghi (<rebellion>) through membership in the Free Life
Party of Kurdistan (PJAK)."
The most recent hearing in Moradi's case occurred on October 6, 2024.
During both her initial hearing on June 16, 2024, and the subsequent
session, her lawyers were denied access to review her case file.
Furthermore, Moradi was not permitted to defend herself during court
proceedings. In a separate case, Moradi and four other political
prisoners in Evin Prison were sentenced to six months of discretionary
imprisonment in November 2024 by the Criminal Court II of the Qods
Judicial Complex in Tehran, presided over by Judge Abolfazl Ameri
Shahrabi. On Tuesday, December 26, 2023, after five months in solitary
confinement at the Ministry of Intelligence detention center, known as
Ward 209 of Evin Prison, Moradi was transferred to the women's ward of
the prison. Earlier, in late August 2023, she had been moved to Ward 209
of Evin Prison after being interrogated and tortured at the Sanandaj
Intelligence Office detention center. On Tuesday, August 1, 2023,
Varisheh Moradi was abducted by Ministry of Intelligence agents on the
road from Marivan to Sanandaj. During her abduction, she was severely
beaten and transferred to a detention center without receiving any
medical care. Varisheh Moradi was subjected to severe torture during her
detention at the Sanandaj Intelligence Office. According to eyewitness
accounts, the torture was so extreme that she coughed up blood and lost
consciousness on at least one occasion.>>

<<Ongoing Denial of Family Visits for Death Row Political Prisoner
Pakhshan Azizi; Concerns Over Security Interference in Judicial Process
Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner on death row, has been
denied in-person visitation rights for the past 150 days. Her lawyers
express doubts about the possibility of her acquittal following an
appeal due to the involvement of security agencies. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Pakhshan
Azizi, a political prisoner from Mahabad, has been deprived of meeting
her family and lawyers in Evin Prison for the past 150 days. This basic
right was revoked during the second round of Iran’s 14th presidential
election. In addition to the complete ban on in-person visits, Azizi was
also denied phone call privileges until late October. Recently, Amir
Raeesian, Azizi's lawyer, provided an update on her case. He noted that
"concrete and verified documents from official sources" confirming
Azizi's humanitarian and social work in refugee camps for those
displaced by the ISIS war had been submitted to the Supreme Court. He
stated: "Despite the evidence presented to the Supreme Court,
preliminary reports are not promising, diminishing hopes of acquittal
from the charge of baghi (armed rebellion) and the accompanying death
sentence." Raeesian has also shared copies of official endorsements from
two humanitarian organizations in Syria confirming Azizi's social work.
He wrote, "Even though innocence and acquittal should not require proof,
we have submitted credible evidence to the Supreme Court." The two
organizations, "Shams Rehabilitation and Development Organization" in
northeast Syria and the Kurdish Red Crescent, are both officially
registered and licensed in Syria. Maziar Tataei, another of Azizi's
lawyers, expressed hope that "the Supreme Court's reviewing branch will
avoid hasty judgment and, by carefully considering the submitted
evidence, overturn the death sentence." However, he also raised concerns
about the possibility of "a rushed trial without adequate attention to
the evidence presented." Pakhshan Azizi was sentenced to death on
Wednesday, June 12, 2024, on the charge of baghi. She was later accused
of <causing unrest in prison> in a separate case opened by Branch 3 of
Evin Prosecutor's Office and sentenced to an additional six months of
imprisonment. It is worth noting that Azizi was arrested on August 4,
2023, in Tehran's Kharrazi district by agents of the Ministry of
Intelligence. She was transferred from Evin Prison's Ward 209,
controlled by the Ministry of Intelligence, to the women's ward on
December 11, 2023. Previously, on November 16, 2009, Azizi had been
detained during a Kurdish student protest at the University of Tehran
against the execution of political prisoners in Kurdistan. She was
released on bail on March 18, 2010, after four months in detention.
Following years of pressure and threats from security agencies, Azizi
left Iran. She later conducted research on the status of women in Iraqi
Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan, undertaking initiatives to improve their
conditions through social work.>>

to Warisha Moradi, a Kurdish political prisoner and a member of the East
Kurdistan Free Women Society (KJAR), and Pakhshan Azizi, Kurdish
journalist and activist, and demand the release of all political
prisoners in Iran. The Cairo Center for Kurdish Studies has released a
written statement, announcing its support to the petition. The center
condemned all the unjust sentences against activists and protesters in
the Islamic Republic of Iran and called on international human rights
organizations to put pressure on Iran to stop the executions.>>

Iran Human Rights - December 5, 2024
<<Narges Mohammadi's Temporary Medical Release is Grossly Insufficient
International Community Must Campaign Vigorously to Prevent Her Return
to Prison
Permanent and Unconditional Release of Nobel Peace Laureate Is Critical
Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and renowned
Iranian human rights defender, has been granted a 21-day medical release
from Evin Prison by the Iranian authorities, after repeated denials and
delays in receiving critical medical care. This temporary release falls
drastically short of what is just and necessary-her permanent and
unconditional freedom, the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) said
in a statement today.
"The Iranian authorities have unlawfully imprisoned Narges Mohammadi for
the same actions that earned her the Nobel Peace Prize-her tireless
advocacy for human rights," said Hadi Ghaemi, CHRI executive director.
"The international community must not allow the Iranian authorities to
return this brave woman-who has continued to be a leading voice for
human rights in Iran even while behind bars-to prison," Ghaemi said. Ms.
Mohammadi's family and legal team demanded a minimum three-month release
to allow her adequate time to recover and receive proper medical care
following a recent surgery to address a potentially cancerous bone
lesion in her right leg. A 21-day release is grossly insufficient and
inadequate given her serious condition and urgent need for comprehensive
medical attention. Ms. Mohammadi should have never been imprisoned in
the first place, and her continued imprisonment for her peaceful
advocacy of basic civil and political rights is a grave violation of her
legal rights, justice, and the fundamental human rights guaranteed to
every individual. She is serving over 30 years of unjust sentences,
based on fabricated charges directly tied to her tireless advocacy. As
the international community considers the prospect of negotiations with
the Islamic Republic, the human rights crisis in Iran must be pursued
simultaneously as a parallel and equally prioritized track. The
unacceptable plight of the many political prisoners and prisoners of
conscience in Iran, who, like Narges Mohammadi, have been unlawfully
placed behind bars for the peaceful expression of their views or
beliefs, should not be sidelined, but rather continuously pressed by the
international community, and their release should be persistently
demanded.>>

<<Protesting Death Sentences for Six PMOI Political Prisoners-Statement
by Political Prisoners in Evin
A group of political prisoners in Tehran's Evin Prison issued a
statement, condemning the issuance of death sentences for six political
prisoners accused of membership in the People's Mojahedin Organization
of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Several women political prisoners from the women's
ward of Evin are also among the signatories of this statement published
on December 4, 2024.
Excerpts from the statement are as follows:
The 2022 uprising, as a pivotal chapter in the Iranian people's struggle
for freedom, has shaken the regime's foundations to such an extent that
it sees no option but to intensify its repression in various forms. The
alarming surge in death sentences for political prisoners over the past
two years not only echoes the state's brutal crackdowns of the 1980s but
also reveals the ruling elite's deep fear of a determined and
justice-seeking society on the rise. The collective death sentence for
six political prisoners-Abolhassan Montazer, Pouya Ghobadi, Vahid Bani
Amerian, Babak Alipour, Mohammad Taghavi, and Akbar (Shahrokh)
Daneshvar-kar-comes in the wake of death sentences issued for young
Iranian protesters detained during the 2022 uprising, in a case called,
"Ekbatan."
Additionally, since the beginning of 2024, several other political
prisoners, including Pakhshan Azizi, Varisha Moradi, Shahriar Bayat,
Behrouz Ehsani, Mehdi Hassani, and Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani, have
faced death sentences and remain in prison under threat of execution.
We, the undersigned political prisoners of Evin Prison, categorically
oppose the death penalty and express our unwavering support for all
political and ideological prisoners facing this brutal punishment. We
firmly believe that the fight for freedom requires collective solidarity
to uphold human rights and build social resistance against the death
verdicts. We call on all Iranians from every social stratum to join
political prisoners in protesting these inhumane and reactionary
sentences by all possible means. The time to stand together in the
streets against executions is now. It is time to save the lives of
political prisoners-it is time to say, 'No to executions.'"
