<<58 Kurds in Piranshahr summoned and prosecuted for wearing traditional
Kurdish attire
In recent days, at least 58 Kurds from the cities of Mahabad, Bukan, and
Piranshahr, including members of families of victims of the "Women,
Life, Freedom" movement, have been summoned by Iran's judiciary after
attending a wedding ceremony. Judicial cases have been initiated against
them.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, these individuals were summoned to a branch of the Islamic
Revolutionary Court in Piranshahr. They are expected to face formal
charges in the coming days. The summons followed the online circulation
of photos showing attendees wearing traditional Kurdish attire and the 'Jamaaneh'
(traditional Kurdish scarf) at the wedding. Notably, in March 2022, the
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) declared the Jamaaneh a symbol
of Kurdish opposition parties, banning its use during Newroz
celebrations. Mojtaba Mahmoudi, the prosecutor of Piranshahr, accused
these individuals of <propaganda against the state> for celebrating,
dancing, and symbolically expressing Kurdish identity at the wedding.
Videos of the event widely shared on social media have also been cited
as evidence.
Among those summoned are Hassan Farastishad, Mohammad Daroftadeh, and
Hassan Daroftadeh, relatives of Amir Farastishad and Komar Daroftadeh,
both victims of the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement. The full list of
individuals summoned by the Iranian judiciary is as follows:>>
