Varisha Moradi
Hengaw - Dec 10, 2025
{Death sentence of Kurdish political prisoner Varisheh Moradi
overturned
The death sentence of Varisheh Moradi, a Kurdish political
prisoner from Sanandaj (Sine) and a member of KJAR, the East
Kurdistan Free Women’s Society, has been overturned. She is held
in Evin Prison, and the case has been returned to the same
issuing branch for a new review. According to information
received by Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Branch 9 of
the Supreme Court quashed Moradi’s death sentence in recent days
because of incomplete investigations. The case has been sent
back to Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court for
reconsideration. Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, wrote on his X
account that the Supreme Court accepted the appeal due to
procedural flaws. He stated that the ruling was annulled because
of incomplete investigations and the failure to properly inform
Moradi of the charge that formed the basis of the death
sentence. The case has been returned to Branch 15 for further
review. Moradi went on a 20-day hunger strike starting on
October 10. The strike coincided with the World Day Against the
Death Penalty. She began the protest in response to the issuance
and implementation of death sentences by the Islamic Republic of
Iran. In November of last year, Branch 15 of the Tehran
Revolutionary Court, presided over by Abolghasem Salavati,
sentenced her to death on the charge of “rebellion (baghi)” for
membership in the Kurdistan Free Life Party, PJAK. The final
hearing in her case was held on October 6 of last year. Her
lawyers were not allowed to review the case file during the
first hearing on June 17 or during the second session. Moradi
was also denied the right to defend herself in court. She was
abducted on August 1, 2023, by agents of the Ministry of
Intelligence on the Marivan to Sanandaj road. She was beaten
severely during the abduction and transferred to a detention
facility without medical attention. Source: Hengaw English}: https://hengaw.net/en/news/2025/12/article-55

{Iranian Woman Sentenced to Death for Killing Abusive Husband
Pardoned
An Iranian woman sentenced to death for killing her husband has
been pardoned by the victim's family, the judiciary announced.
Goli Koohkan, a 25-year-old Baluch woman without identity
documents, was convicted of killing her husband and spent seven
years in Amirabad Prison in Gorgan awaiting execution. The
judiciary's Mizan news agency said the pardon was granted
“through mediation by the judicial system.” However, independent
accounts highlight the role of public campaigns and human rights
activists who raised blood money to secure her release.
Judiciary officials did not disclose the amount paid, though the
victim's family had previously demanded billions of rials (tens
of thousands of dollars) in blood money, as well as Koohkan’s
permanent exile from Gorgan. Koohkan was married at age 12 to
her cousin without her consent and became pregnant at 13. She
was arrested at 18 on charges of killing her husband. Former
cellmates said Koohkan endured years of domestic violence and
that her husband’s death occurred during a family dispute
without premeditation. They said she immediately called
emergency services in an attempt to get him to a hospital.
During her imprisonment, Koohkan learned to read and write, and
was described by fellow inmates as “the calmest and kindest
woman prisoner.” At the time of her conviction, Koohkan had no
access to independent legal counsel and was illiterate. UN
experts described her case as a clear example of “structural
discrimination against women” in Iran. Last week, UN special
rapporteurs, including the special rapporteur on Iran, formally
called on Iranian authorities to halt her execution. Human
rights organizations said Koohkan was a victim of poverty, child
marriage, and domestic violence, and that executing her would
constitute a serious violation of Iran’s international
obligations. More than 40 women have been executed in Iran this
year, many with similar circumstances, according to Iran Human
Rights, a Norway-based organization.} Source: https://iranwire.com/en/women/146864-iranian-woman-sentenced-to-death-for-killing-abusive-husband-pardoned/

Forough Khosravi
Jinhagency - Womens News Agency - Dec 11, 2025
{Calls to Review Prison Sentence Against Iranian Teacher
More than 100 teachers and civil activists voiced support for
Forough Khosravi, a Behbahan teacher sentenced to 15 years in
prison for her union work and objections to state broadcasting
News Center-The signatories of the statement called on the
judiciary in Khuzestan to reconsider the verdict issued by the
preliminary court against Forough Khosravi, stressing the need to
ensure justice for her and respect the right of education. The
statement noted that the unprecedented 15-year prison sentence
issued against Khosravi,a teacher from Behbahan, was merely the
result of her written objections to the performance of the state
radio and television authority, following the unlawful raid on
her home under the pertext of a “12-day war”, the confiscation
of her mobile phone, and the fabrication of a judicial case
against her_while completely ignoring her defense.the ruling
sparked profound shock and widespread sadness among social
activists and advocares of justice.
The statement emphasized that such arbitrary and unlawful
measure, under the pretext of”external threats” undermine the
credibility of the judiciary, erode ethical values, contradict
claims of “Islamic justice”, and increase public resentment and
dissatisfaction among citizens. The signatories—a group of
teachers, educators, and civil activists—urged the Khuzestan
judiciary to review the verdict issued by the primary court
while preserving the legal and moral standing of the judicial
institution. They stressed the importance of upholding the rule
of law, protecting civil rights, safeguarding the dignity of
educators, and strengthening social cohesion. They also called
for creating the necessary conditions to acquit this dedicated
and competent teacher.
It is worth noting that Forough Khosravi, an elementary school
teacher from Behbahan and holder of a Ph.D. in Education, was
sentenced by the First Branch of the Revolutionary Court to:
1 year for “propaganda against the system,”
2 years for “insulting Khamenei,”
7 years for “insulting sacred values,” and
5 years for “communicating with media outlets linked to Israel,”
bringing the total to 15 years in prison.
According to Article 134 of the Islamic Penal Code, only the
most severe sentence—5 years of imprisonment—will be enforced
against Forough Khosravi.} Source: https://jinhaagency.com/en/actual/calls-to-review-prison-sentence-against-iranian-teacher-38135

{Iran Faces Worsening Drug Shortage as Currency Crisis Disrupts
Supply Chain
Drug shortages in Iran are intensifying as currency problems and
unpaid debts disrupt the pharmaceutical supply chain, with the
final months of the Persian year expected to bring the most
severe shortages. Mohammad Abdehzadeh, head of the health
economics commission at the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, said
drug producers and importers are queuing daily at the Central
Bank and Health Ministry to pursue currency allocations and
import permits. Abdehzadeh described drug shortages as a
“chronic and permanent” problem driven by three main factors:
currency shortages, lack of rials and pricing delays that have
plagued the pharmaceutical market for years. Many pharmaceutical
companies have paid in rials for raw materials since June, but
those funds remain blocked in banks, Abdehzadeh said. Despite
currency allocations by the Central Bank, the government
intermediary company Nico has been unable to transfer foreign
exchange to overseas suppliers, he said. The result has been
delayed raw material shipments, disrupted imports and expanding
drug shortages - problems that have also affected medical
equipment supplies, according to Abdehzadeh. To continue
operations, drug companies are forced to take bank loans at
interest rates approaching 38 per cent while profit margins on
drug production are only 20 per cent to 25 per cent, he said.
Abdehzadeh warned that continued currency problems and unpaid
debts could make the final three months of the year the most
difficult period for Iran’s pharmaceutical market.} Source: https://iranwire.com/en/news/146890-iran-faces-worsening-drug-shortage-as-currency-crisis-disrupts-supply-chain/

{Iranian Authorities Arrest at Least 19 Kurdish Citizens in
Western Provinces
Iranian security forces have arrested at least 19 Kurdish
citizens and civil activists across western Iran in the past
week amid an intensifying crackdown. Intelligence Ministry
agents and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) intelligence
units carried out coordinated arrests in Mahabad, Bukan,
Naqadeh, Marivan, and Oshnavieh. Security forces detained many
individuals without warrants and used violence during the
arrests. Early on Wednesday, Saman Ghorbani, a Kurdish citizen
from a village near Mahabad, was arrested at his home without a
warrant and beaten by security forces in front of family
members, sources told IranWire. Two residents of Khalifan
district near Mahabad, Kazem Azdeh and Naser Azarm, were
arrested on Tuesday by the Intelligence Ministry forces. In
Naqadeh, Mahmoud Khodadadi and Heyman Rahimi were arrested on
Saturday at their workplace without warrants and with the use of
force. Samko Yousefi, a civil activist and Kurdish language
teacher from Bukan, was arrested on Monday on a city street and
beaten by Intelligence Ministry agents, according to reports.
Two other Bukan residents, Kaveh Koleh and Qader Koleh, were
also arrested without warrants. Mohammad Mostafa was arrested on
Saturday at his home in Mahabad. On Wednesday, the Kurdpa Human
Rights Organization reported three additional arrests in
Mahabad, identifying the detainees as Akam Sheikheh, Hezhar
Mohammadzadeh, and Iman Mohammadzadeh. Human rights
organizations have warned about the increasing pattern of
violent arrests, extrajudicial detentions, and pressure on civil
and cultural activists in western provinces, where Kurdish
communities face heightened surveillance and restrictions.}

Kamal Jafari Yazdi
Iranwire - Dec 11, 2025
{Friend of Dead Iranian Lawyer Missing After Summons by
Intelligence Ministry
An Iranian civil activist and client of a lawyer who died under
suspicious circumstances has gone missing after being summoned
to intelligence offices in Mashhad. Kamal Jafari Yazdi was
called to the Ministry of Intelligence office on Wednesday and
has not been heard from since, sources told IranWire. Family and
friends have expressed concern about his safety and whereabouts.
Jafari Yazdi was a friend and client of Khosrow Alikurdi, a
lawyer who died over the weekend and was among the signatories
of a letter calling for Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's
resignation. The letter, known as the "14 people" statement,
attracted significant attention from Iranian authorities in
2019. Jafari Yazdi, a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war who fought
alongside Alikurdi's father, was released on bail from Vakilabad
Prison in Mashhad about three weeks ago after a year in
detention. In a letter to a UN fact-finding mission, Alikurdi
said his life was in danger and referenced cases being built
against him for representing clients, including Jafari Yazdi and
other signatories of the 14-person letter. The disappearance
comes as Javad Alikurdi, the late lawyer's brother, announced on
Wednesday that the Mashhad Revolutionary Court had summoned him.
In a message, he said he considered the summons "under any
circumstances" a source of pride and a sign of commitment to
"truth, justice, and human responsibility." Javad Alikurdi
called on the public not to forget his or his brother's fate
should "silence be imposed" on him. IranWire previously reported
that friends and family of Khosrow Alikurdi were threatened by
security agencies not to "give excuses to the enemy media" and
to say his death resulted from a stroke. Evidence suggesting his
death was suspicious includes the confiscation of personal items
without receipts, the seizure of 16 security camera recordings
from his home and office, and authorities' refusal to allow his
burial in Mashhad or Sabzevar due to "fear of public
gathering."} Source: https://iranwire.com/en/news/146886-friend-of-dead-iranian-lawyer-missing-after-summons-by-intelligence-ministry/

Hassan Touzandehjani

{Iranian Poet Held Without Charge for Over 110 Days
An Iranian poet and cultural activist has been held without
charge for more than 110 days, with authorities providing no
information about his case or legal status. Hassan Touzandehjani
was arrested on August 20 when Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps
(IRGC) intelligence agents raided his Tehran home and
confiscated electronic devices, including his mobile phone and
laptop. Touzandehjani was arrested alongside four other cultural
and political activists: Ehsan Rostami, Ramin Rostami, Marjan
Ardeshirzadeh, and Nima Mahdizadegan. Family and friends have
expressed concern about Touzandehjani's health, saying he
suffers from high blood pressure and is in a worrying condition.
He has not been allowed access to a lawyer or family visits.
More than 200 cultural activists signed an open letter calling
for information about the poet's whereabouts and demanding he be
granted access to legal counsel and family. "From August 20
until today, no clear news has been received about his location,
his condition, or the detaining authority," the letter reads.
"This heavy silence is not only a clear violation of human
rights but also a scar on this land's culture." The signatories
emphasized the importance of freedom and transparency. They
called for immediate attention to Touzandehjani's case, saying,
"Silence in the face of a poet's fate is silence in the face of
human freedom." Iranian authorities regularly detain writers,
poets, and cultural activists on vague national security
charges, often holding them for extended periods without formal
charges or access to legal representation.} Source: https://iranwire.com/en/news/146885-iranian-poet-held-without-charge-for-over-110-days/

Detained
Iranian security agents detained the wife of imprisoned lawyer
Taher Naghavi for several hours on Monday after raiding the
couple’s home without a warrant.
Ministry of Intelligence agents searched the home and
confiscated a laptop, mobile phone, flash drives, hard drives,
and other items before detaining Soheila Sedghiani. She was
released after three hours of interrogation. Iranian authorities
frequently detain or interrogate family members of political
prisoners and activists as a form of pressure against
dissidents. A source close to the family said authorities
provided no explanation for the raid or Sedghiani’s detention,
according to the Democratic Society of Azerbaijan news site.
Naghavi, a political prisoner held at Evin Prison, has been on
hunger strike since October 27 to protest being denied medical
treatment. He has also been barred from family visits. Naghavi

{Former Iranian Political Prisoner Killed in Knife Attack
A civil activist and former political prisoner was stabbed to
death by three attackers in northwestern Iran. Qader Younespour
was attacked on Friday evening in Oshnavieh, a city in West
Azerbaijan province. Eyewitnesses said he was severely wounded
in the knife attack and died before reaching medical facilities.
Ali Tavakoli, the police commander for Oshnavieh, said two
suspects have been arrested and legal proceedings have begun.
The identity of the third suspect and the possible motives for
the attack have not been disclosed. According to local reports,
Younespour had previously been summoned multiple times by
security agencies because of his civil activities and had
received threats from unknown individuals before the attack.
Hundreds of residents and civil activists attended Younespour's
burial on Sunday in Oshnavieh. The killing comes amid broader
tensions over civil activism in Iran, where authorities have
increasingly cracked down on dissent and independent organizing.

{U.S. State Department: The World Cannot Turn a Blind Eye to
Executions in Iran
The U.S. State Department, noting that Iran’s regime uses
executions to instill fear and silence dissent, stated that the
world cannot turn a blind eye to the executions taking place in
Iran. The U.S. State Department emphasized in its statement:
“The United States stands with the people of Iran and will
continue to condemn these horrific violations.” The statement
said: “In November alone Iran executed at least 260 people, the
highest monthly total in more than two decades, while officially
announcing only two.” Iran Human Rights Monitor reported that in
2025 alone, Iran’s regime executed 1,791 people — an
unprecedented figure in the past thirty-seven years. The Islamic
Republic has intensified its use of the death penalty to silence
dissent and instill fear across society. Iranian regime
authorities hanged 335 prisoners, including 7 women, in
November. Two of the victims were publicly executed. The number
of executions this month (November) was more than double the 155
in 2024, three times the 115 in 2023, six times the 57 in 2022,
and eleven times the 30 in 2021. According to NCRI, at Least 36
Prisoners Executed in the Past Three Days. This brings the
number of recorded executions in the first 17 days of the
Persian month of Azar (since November 22) to over 200. During
the same period, the regime’s judiciary sentenced a political
prisoner to death on charges of supporting the People’s
Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and upheld the death
sentences of six others on the same charge. The rise in the
issuance, confirmation, and implementation of death sentences in
Iran in recent months has sparked widespread protest both inside
and outside the country. The U.K. Foreign Office called on
November 21 for an immediate halt to executions in Iran. On
November 19, the Third Committee of the United Nations General
Assembly passed a resolution condemning human rights violations
in Iran, with 79 votes in favor and 28 against. This year’s text
placed greater emphasis on executions, women’s rights, the
suppression of protesters, and transnational repression.}

was ultimately rescued and survived. Dozens of kolbars who rely
on mountain border routes for their livelihoods are injured each

{Former political prisoner Kaveh Ahmadzadeh dies after denial of
medical care in Bukan Prison
Kaveh Ahmadzadeh, a former political prisoner from Bukan, has
died in Bukan Central Prison after authorities denied him access
to the urgent medical treatment. He had been detained in recent
months on financial-related charges. According to information
received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Ahmadzadeh
— a 54-year-old resident of Bukan and father of one — died on
Sunday, December 7, 2025, after contracting influenza inside the
prison and being deprived of adequate medical care. Sources told
Hengaw that Ahmadzadeh had first been taken to the prison
infirmary the previous week due to worsening flu symptoms.
Despite the clear deterioration of his condition, prison
authorities refused to transfer him to a medical facility
outside the prison. On Saturday, December 6, as his condition
became critical, he was again taken to the infirmary, where he
received intravenous fluids before being returned to his ward.
He died the following day. Ahmadzadeh had been serving a
six-month prison term and was required to pay a fine as part of
a financial case. A former political prisoner from the 1980s,
Ahmadzadeh had been arrested multiple times on political
charges. He was previously detained in 2008 and 2013, serving a
total of approximately six years in Bukan Central Prison on
allegations of “acting against national security through
membership in the Free Life Party of Kurdistan (PJAK)". Source:
