The sanctity of life
Medyanews - April 10, 2025 - by Fréderike Geerdink
The sanctity of life is under pressure
Fréderike Geerdink condemns the rising global use of the death penalty,
particularly in Iran, where Kurds face disproportionate executions. She
argues against state-sanctioned killings, emphasizing that life is
sacred and should not be subjected to repressive regimes.
We need to speak out against the death penalty more. The number of
countries still using this barbaric punishment is at an all-time low,
but the number of executions is actually rising. And my bet is that this
is the start of a global trend. After all, the death penalty is a handy
tool in the hands of fascists, a particular kind of leader that is
rapidly gaining global momentum. The latest horror story about the death
penalty comes from Iran, and it’s about a Kurdish man. Both are not
coincidences. Iran is again the country that has carried out the most
death penalties worldwide in 2024, Amnesty concluded in a report.
Minorities, among whom Kurds, are disproportionally affected. The story
revolves around a man named Hamid Huseynnejad Heyderanlu. He is from
Rojhilat (Kurdistan in Iran), but his mother’s family is originally from
Bakur (in Turkey), the province of Van, bordering Iran. He was sentenced
to death for a crime – it’s unknown which crime – that was committed
while he was visiting his family in Bakur. His mother has given details
in a video message. There are phone records that prove where he was, and
there is a stamp in his passport saying he left the country for a trip
before the date of the crime.
Children
Initially, the family didn’t make the case public. But now they are
desperate. Hamid, who is married and has three children, has been in
prison for two years now, of which one year in full isolation. He was
forced to confess to the crime under heavy torture. Hamid’s mother calls
on human rights organisations and the general public to stand with her,
and demand her son’s release. Hopefully, publicity helps and Hamid’s
life will be saved. Hopefully, this will also work for three Kurdish
women on death row. They are Warisheh Moradi, Pakhshan Azizi and
Sharifeh Mohammedi. They are political prisoners and sentenced for the
crime of standing up for humanity. There has been quite a lot of public
attention for their cases already, including from Amnesty International
and Human Rights Watch. So far, the regime doesn’t blink an eye, but
hope hasn’t been lost yet. Authors Abbas Alizadeh and Soran Mansournia
have phrased it well here on Medya News: “Defending their lives is not
just about individual justice; it is a stand for the fundamental belief
that peaceful activism and the pursuit of human rights should never be
punishable.”
Sympathy
But I want to speak out too for those who have committed a crime. Hengaw
often has news about Kurds and other minorities, like Baloch citizens,
being hanged for crimes like murder or drugs trafficking. These people
usually attract far less sympathy from the public. They knew the
punishment for what they did, so they brought it on themselves, right?
Probably, they knew, but that’s the thing with the death penalty:
research has shown again and again that the death penalty doesn’t help
bring crime down. If it has any effect on crime rates, it works the
other way around: the more violent the state, the more violent the
citizens. But such statistics are, eventually, irrelevant. Because the
state should not have the right to take anybody’s life. Life is sacred,
and the right to life is unconditional. The latter means that whatever
you do, even taking somebody’s life, it does mean you lose your right to
life. In short, the death penalty should be abolished everywhere for
every crime. It’s merely a tool of repressive regimes to keep the
citizens under control and to intimidate them. Which is why I am
worried. For many years, the trend has been that one country after the
other abolished the death penalty. With authoritarianism on the rise, it
could very well be that the trend will be reversed. Or that the number
of crimes you can get the death penalty for, goes up.
Kurds
The signs are there. The most worrying sign is the blatant disrespect
for human life. It’s easy to point at Iran or China (the latter doesn’t
publish numbers about executions so it might be much higher than Iran),
or name the US as one of the few western nations that still carry out
the death penalty, but Europe isn’t much better. For example my country,
the Netherlands, has long since abolished the death penalty, but it is
supporting the genocide in Gaza and doesn’t hold Turkey to account for
its ongoing repression, including murder, of Kurds. Turkey has abolished
the death penalty but it doesn’t shy away from extrajudicial murders in
Rojava (Kurdistan in Syria) and Başur (in Iraq). As always, I plea for
looking at the larger picture. The right to life and the sanctity of
life are under pressure. In Iran, the lives of Hamid Huseynnejad
Heyderanlu, Warisheh Moradi, Pakhshan Azizi and Sharifeh Mohammedi are
at stake. I deeply hope their lives will be saved. But if that happens,
please don’t stop worrying about life.

<<Argentina Prosecutor Seeks Arrest Warrant for Khamenei
Argentina’s lead prosecutor, Sebastián Basso, has requested arrest
warrants for the Islamic Republic’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, over
the 1994 AMIA bombing. Basso said Khamenei directly ordered the bombing
of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people and
injured 300. According to the prosecutor, Khamenei “led the decision to
carry out a bomb attack in Buenos Aires in July 1994 and issued
executive order (fatwa) 39 to carry it out.” Basso asked Federal Judge
Daniel Rafecas to summon Khamenei to testify about his involvement in
the July 18, 1994 attack, along with other Iranian suspects. The
prosecutor said Khamenei sponsored a clandestine armed organization
linked to Hezbollah that carried out the AMIA bombing and other
terrorist acts. Basso requested an Interpol notification for the arrest
and ordered Argentine federal security forces to detain Khamenei if he

January 2020 while reporting on protests following the downing of a
Ukrainian passenger plane by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
She was sentenced to five years in prison. Although her sentence was

Other inocent women hanged
NRCI - April 9, 2025 - In Women's news
<<Three Women Executed in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad
Three women were executed at dawn on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, among at
least ten inmates in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad, Iran.
Five of the victims were Sunni prisoners of conscience, executed after 9
years of imprisonment. Four of the individuals — including two of the
women — had been sentenced to death on drug-related charges. Another
woman, who had been imprisoned on charges of murder, was also executed
on the same day. As of the time of this report, the Iranian regime’s
state media and official sources have not confirmed the execution. With
the execution of these three women, the number of women executed in Iran
in 2025 has risen to eleven. Amnesty International, in its Annual Report
2024, announced that a whopping 64% of the executions worldwide had been
carried out in Iran.
Iran: The World’s Leading Executioner of Women
Iran holds the grim record for the highest number of women executed
globally. According to data compiled by the Women’s Committee of the
National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), at least 274 women have
been executed in Iran since 2007. Many of the women executed by the
Iranian regime are themselves victims of domestic violence and
discriminatory family laws. A significant number have acted in
self-defense. The number of women executed in Iran saw a sharp rise in
2024. At least 34 women were hanged last year, with 23 of these
executions occurring after Massoud Pezeshkian took office. In total, the
regime executed at least 1,000 prisoners in 2024. In the Iranian
calendar Year 1403, at least 38 women were executed in Iran, marking a
disturbing 90% increase compared to the previous year.
A Statistical Comparison of Women’s Executions in Iran
Between 2013 and 2020, at least 120 women were executed in Iran,
averaging 15 executions per year. In contrast, the execution of 34 women
in 2024 marks more than a twofold increase, signaling an alarming trend.
Since Ebrahim Raisi took office in 2021, the number of
executions—including those of women—has steadily increased. This upward
trajectory has accelerated after Raisi’s death on May 19, 2023, and
Pezeshkian’s rise to power in August 2023. Since Raisi’s death, an
average of 3.3 women have been executed per month. Pezeshkian openly
defended the regime’s execution policy on October 9, 2024. In
comparison, during Raisi’s 34-month tenure, 63 women were executed,
averaging 1.85 executions per month. These figures reinforce the reality
that, regardless of who holds the presidency, the Iranian regime
continues to trample on the rights of its people—especially women.>>

report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Karim
Jalili, a 41-year-old man from Masjed Soleyman, has been on a hunger
strike in the city's prison since Tuesday, March 5, 2024. An informed
source close to Karim Jalili's family told Hengaw that, the political
defendant began his hunger strike six days ago to protest his uncertain
situation and the IRGC's intelligence trumped-up files. The source added
that Karim Jalili's case has been referred to the Dezful court, and he
will continue his hunger strike until his condition is clarified. Karim
Jalili was arrested by IRGC forces in Masjed Soleyman on Wednesday,
March 12, 2025.

<<Parisa Darvish Forcibly Disappeared in Mashhad: A Continuing Pattern
of State-Backed Abductions in Iran
Parisa Darvish, a young woman residing in Mashhad, has been reportedly
detained by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence and taken to an
undisclosed location. No security or judicial authority in Iran has
formally acknowledged her arrest or confirmed her whereabouts.
Parisa Darvish, approximately 30 years old and a homemaker, has been
missing since late February. Her family and close contacts have received
no information regarding her physical condition, legal status, or place
of detention. Over the past few weeks, her family has made repeated
efforts to locate her by contacting security and law enforcement offices
in Mashhad, but their inquiries have gone unanswered.
Enforced Disappearance: A Tool of Fear and Repression
Enforced disappearance—a practice condemned by international human
rights organizations, including the United Nations—is considered a crime
against humanity. In Iran, this method has long been used to silence
dissent and spread fear among civil society. Historically, numerous
cases have been documented in which citizens, civil activists,
protesters, or even ordinary individuals were arrested without a court
warrant and held incommunicado in secret detention centers. Detainees
often face psychological pressure, are denied access to legal counsel,
and are subjected to coercive interrogations, torture, and forced
confessions. Under Article 49 of Iran’s Code of Criminal Procedure,
judicial and security officials must promptly inform the detainee’s
family and lawyer of the reasons for arrest, location of detention, and
potential charges. However, repeated violations of this legal
provision—particularly in politically sensitive cases—have become
alarmingly routine.>>

Aida Ghajar
Iranwire - April 8, 2025 - by Aida Ghajar
<<IranWire Journalist Details Alarming Rise in Executions to European
Parliament
IranWire’s chief correspondent, Aida Ghajar, addressed EU Parliament
members on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. She presented evidence of escalating
human rights abuses in Iran, including a 14 percent increase in
executions over the past year. The journalist, who lives in exile, began
her address with a personal reflection. “What if I hadn’t gone into
exile? What if I had stayed in Iran?” Ghajar asked the chamber. “What
would have become of my 22-year-old son - the young man who is now
studying for a Master’s degree in International Criminal Law? “Would he
have been shot and killed as a child, like Kian Pirfalak, the 9-year-old
boy whose only crime was dreaming?” She then presented alarming
execution statistics, telling parliamentarians, “In 2024, at least 972
people were executed in Iran. “This number shows a 14 per cent increase
compared to 2023. Among those executed, at least 30 were women.”
According to Amnesty International data cited by Ghajar, “Iran accounted
for 64 per cent of all recorded executions worldwide in 2024.”
The pace has not slowed in 2025.
“In the first three months of 2025, at least 230 people have been
executed,” Ghajar said, citing the recent assessment of UN Special
Rapporteur Mai Sato, who described these numbers as “alarming.” “In
March, 59 people were executed - 59 human beings who, if Iran were not
under the control of the mullahs, would be speaking freely like you and
me, playing with their children, and saying goodnight to them at
bedtime,” she said. She highlighted the Islamic Republic’s specific
targeting of protesters from the Woman, Life, Freedom movement that
erupted after Mahsa Amini died in custody in September 2022. “In the
past two years, following the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, at least
nine protesters have also been executed in Iran,” she reported. “I would
like to say their names,” she added, before mentioning Mohammad Hosseini,
39 years old, a sports coach and worker. She also named Javad Rouhi, 35,
who “was sentenced to death three times. Under torture, he lost his
ability to speak, and he died on the way to the hospital due to delayed
medical attention.” The crackdown has driven some activists to suicide,
including “Kianoush Sanjari, a journalist who had been living in exile.
“He could not bear the pain of exile and returned to Iran. He was kept
under constant surveillance by intelligence agents. On November 24,
2024, he died by suicide.” Six more protesters currently face execution.
Milad Armoon, Alireza Kafaee, Amir Mohammad Khosh-Eghbal, Navid Najaran,
Hossein Nemati, and Alireza Barmazarpournak - all of them were
protesters.
“They were arrested, sentenced to death without any evidence, and are
still on death row today.” Ghajar identified three women facing
execution: Sharifeh Mohammadi, 46 years old, a social worker, mother of
a child, and daughter of a worker; Pakhshan Azizi, 40 years old, a
social work activist; and Vareisheh Moradi, 39 years old, a political
activist. The women’s sentences, according to human rights defenders,
represent “revenge by the Islamic Republic for the Woman, Life, Freedom
movement.” Ghajar said, “The regime wants to send a message: that when
it comes to executions, it makes no distinction between women and men.”
She also detailed sexual violence against protesters, including a
21-year-old student whose “breasts were squeezed” by an interrogator
while “she screamed in agony.” After her release, the young woman
returned to protests and was shot with a paintball gun, losing sight in
one eye. According to Ghajar, this was “the same fate that befell at
least 580 protesters who lost one or both of their eyes.” “Let me speak
about journalists,” Ghajar added. “Vida Rabhani, Reza Vali Zadeh, Zhina
Modares Gorji, and Mostafa Nemati are in prison simply for their
commitment to exposing the truth.” Ghajar warned that Iran’s repression
extends beyond its borders. “Islamic Republic repression is not just
within Iran; it has also reached us abroad,” she said. “According to
statistics from the Broumand Foundation, in the 45 years of the Islamic
Republic’s rule, at least 903 extrajudicial killings have taken place
outside Iran’s borders by the IRGC and Ministry of Intelligence agents,
or under their orders.”>>
