Femicide
A pregnant woman from Kuzaran, a city in Kermanshah Province, has been
brutally murdered by her husband using a firearm. The victim, Farzaneh
Moradi, and her unborn twins were killed because one of the fetuses was
a girl. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for
Human Rights, on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, 30-year-old Farzaneh Moradi,
a resident of Kuzaran and the mother of two daughters aged 5 and 8, was
shot and killed with a handgun by her husband, identified as Pedram
Safaei. Sources close to the family stated that Moradi was pregnant with
twins—one boy and one girl—and had been subjected to abuse by her
husband due to the gender of one of the fetuses. The violence escalated
into a fatal attack. Following the murder, the perpetrator fled the
scene, but was later turned in to the police by relatives. He is

Families of Political Prisoners Demand Abolition of Death Sentences
NRCI - April 8, 2025 - In Women's news
<<Families of Political Prisoners Demand Abolition of Death Sentences
Tuesday, April 8, 2025 – A group of families of political prisoners
sentenced to death staged a peaceful protest outside Tehran’s Evin
Prison, demanding the immediate revocation of death sentences issued
against their loved ones. The protesters carried photographs of several
political prisoners, including Shahrokh Daneshvarkar, Vahid Bani Amerian,
Abolhassan Montazer, Mehdi Hassani, Mohammad Taghavi, Behrouz Ehsani,
Mohammad-Javad Vafaee Sani, and Pouya Ghobadi. Holding placards and
handwritten signs reading “No to Execution” and “Abolish the Death
Penalty Now,” the families called attention to the increasing use of
capital punishment in Iran. A large banner displaying the slogan “No to
Execution” was also prominently featured during the protest. In December
2024, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced six
political prisoners—including Vahid Bani Amerian, Pouya Ghobadi,
Shahrokh Daneshvarkar, Abolhassan Montazer, Babak Alipour, and Mohammad
Taghavi—to execution, imprisonment, and exile. On January 23, 2025,
Amnesty International warned that these prisoners were at imminent risk
of execution after being convicted on charges of “rebellion through
membership in opposition groups.” The gatherings of families of
political prisoners reflect widespread dissent against the harsh
repression and heavy sentences imposed on political detainees in Iran.
The clerical regime employs unfair trials and instrumentalizes the death
penalty as a tool to eliminate political opposition and instill fear in
society. This protest of families of political prisoners took place in
conjunction with the 63rd week of the nationwide “No to Execution
Tuesdays” campaign, a grassroots movement currently active in 38 prisons
across the country. The campaign aims to oppose the systematic use of
the death penalty in Iran through weekly hunger strikes and collective
action.

63rd Week of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign
On the same day, hundreds of political prisoners launched another round
of hunger strikes, continuing a pattern of weekly protests against mass
executions. In a statement marking the 63rd week of the campaign, the
prisoners condemned the sharp rise in death sentences and executions
following the end of the Nowruz holidays. They also welcomed the recent
resolution adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council on
widespread human rights violations in Iran, as well as the one-year
extension of the mandates for both the UN Special Rapporteur on the
situation of human rights in Iran and the Independent International
Fact-Finding Mission.>>

Qezbest Ruzdar
Medyanews - April 8, 2025
<<Urgent plea of a Kurdish mother to halt execution of son in Iran
sparks outcry
The mother of Hamid Huseynnejad Heyderanlu has issued a public plea,
made visible after being amplified by a social media influencer, calling
for international human rights organisations to act swiftly to prevent
her son’s execution. Her appeal highlights serious concerns about due
process violations and the silencing of cases like her son's until they
are brought to light through public pressure. Hamid Huseynnejad
Heyderanlu, a Kurdish man from the Çaldıran (Ebex) district of Van
(Wan), Turkey, is currently facing a death sentence in Iran. His mother,
Qezbest Ruzdar, released an emotional video appeal on 7 April directed
at both the general public and human rights organisations, asking for
urgent intervention to save her son’s life. This is the first time his
case has come to public attention. In her statement, Ruzdar explained
that her son has been imprisoned for two years, including an entire year
in incommunicado detention. She insists he was in Turkey with her and
his children on the date of the alleged offence. Supporting this claim,
she cites his passport, which bears an exit stamp, and phone signal
records indicating he was outside of Iran at the time.
In the video, Ruzdar said:
"I am Qezbest Ruzdar, mother of Hamid Huseynnejad Heyderanlu. We are
from Çaldıran [Ebex], a district of Van [Wan], Turkey. On the day they
claim the incident happened, my son, his children and I were together in
Turkey. His passport has an exit stamp and phone signal data also shows
he was outside Iran. Yet, they still arrested him." Ruzdar claims her
son was tortured during interrogation and forced to sign a confession he
could not read due to his illiteracy. "He didn’t even know what he was
signing. A death sentence was handed to an innocent person. His lawyer
has proven his innocence," she said. "I am a mother. I am dying from
this pain. My grandchildren are left without their father. We want
justice. Please help us."
Çaldıran, in Van province near the Turkey-Iran border, lies within a
region historically inhabited by Kurdish communities. The area
illustrates the lasting effects of 20th-century nation-state boundary
formations, which divided the Kurdish population across Turkey, Iran,
Iraq, and Syria. A prominent example is the division of Kurdish-majority
southeast Turkey, known as Bakur, and Kurdish-majority western Iran,
known as Rojhilat, where longstanding cultural and familial ties have
been disrupted by militarised borders and oppressive state policies. The
fragmented Kurdish populations have been subjected to distinct political
systems, characterised by surveillance, restricted movement, and broader
efforts at cultural assimilation. Local reports confirm that
Heyderanlu’s death sentence was recently upheld. The ruling is believed
to be based on forced confessions and was made in the absence of
adequate legal representation. He has been accused of membership in a
banned organisation—an allegation frequently used by Iranian authorities
in politically motivated cases. Iran’s use of the death penalty,
particularly in cases involving ethnic minorities and political charges,
has long attracted international criticism. According to human rights
organisations, executions have sharply increased in recent years, many
following trials that lack transparency and fail to meet international
legal standards. The case of Heyderanlu came to light after a social
media influencer shared his mother’s emotional appeal, pushing his
arrest and sentencing into the public eye. In parallel, three Kurdish
women—Warisheh Mohammedi, Pakshan Azizi, and Sharifeh Mohammedi—are also
at risk of imminent execution in Iran. Amnesty International and Human
Rights Watch have issued urgent calls for action in these cases, raising
alarm over due process violations, alleged torture during detention, and
unfair trials.>>

Hoda Mehreganfar
NRCI - April 8, 2025 - In Women's news
<<Ongoing Legal Uncertainty for Hoda Mehreganfar and Her Father in
Adelabad Prison
More than 160 days after their arrest, Hoda Mehreganfar and her father,
Mohammad-Ali Mehreganfar—residents of Zarqan, a town in Fars
Province—remain in prolonged pre-trial detention at Adelabad Prison in
Shiraz, with no formal charges or legal resolution. The continued denial
of medical care in prison has raised serious concerns about their
deteriorating health conditions. A preliminary hearing for the father
and daughter was held via video conference on March 30, 2025. They were
accused of alleged connections with an opposition group during this
session. Despite the extended detention period, they have not been
granted release on bail. Hoda Mehreganfar, who underwent gynecological
surgery shortly before her arrest, has been denied necessary medical
follow-ups and has not been transferred to any medical facility. Reports
indicate that due to unsanitary conditions in the women’s ward, she has
contracted fungal infections and scabies. Mohammad Ali Mehreganfar
suffers from heart problems and requires surgery on one of his eyes.
However, he, too, has been deprived of appropriate medical care while in
custody. On the morning of October 22, 2024, Hoda Mehreganfar, an
electronics engineer, and her father, Mohammad Ali Mehreganfar, were
arrested by Iranian intelligence forces. At around 5 a.m. on Tuesday,
October 22, 2024, security agents stormed their home in Zarqan, and took
the 35-year-old Hoda and her 66-year-old father into custody without
providing any warrant. Following their arrest, Hoda Mehreganfar and her
father were transferred to Adelabad Prison in Shiraz. The continued
legal limbo of these two political detainees, coupled with the denial of
medical treatment, exemplifies the ongoing human rights violations and
lack of regard for human dignity within the judicial and security
apparatus of the Iranian regime.>>

<<Iranian Women’s Lack of Access to Basic Healthcare
Iranian women are battling a healthcare nightmare under a misogynistic
regime: drug prices skyrocketing 415%, scarce female doctors, and
surging cancer rates! Oppressive laws like the “Youthful Population” ban
on abortion and genetic testing endanger lives daily. Dive into our
latest podcast for the full story! In Iran, the fundamental right to
healthcare is increasingly out of reach, particularly for women, as the
regime prioritizes its survival over the welfare of its people. Under
the dictatorship of Velayat al-Faqih, preserving the regime takes
precedence, often at the expense of citizens’ basic rights. The
healthcare crisis in Iran is exacerbated by widespread poverty and
soaring costs, leaving many unable to access essential medical services.
For women, the situation is even more dire, as they are systematically
treated as second-class citizens. Nahid Khodakarmi, head of Iran’s
Midwifery Association, highlighted the issue in 2017, noting the
significant gaps in women’s health services, particularly for pregnant
mothers. “Comprehensive health centers and bases lack adequate services
for women’s health, fertility, and maternity care, which face serious
challenges and a troubling lack of transparency,” Khodakarmi said.
According to Khodakarami, until 2015, all health centers had three units
including “family planning,” “mother and child’s health,” and
“midwifery.” These units were completely eliminated from the Plan on the
Transformation of the Health System in 2016. Therefore, there no longer
are any departments specifically concentrated on pregnancy health and
pregnant women. (ISNA, January 7, 2017) Notably, the systemic collapse
of healthcare services cannot be rebuilt under a regime marred by
misogyny and disregard for human rights. Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi, a
former Minister of Health, recently shed light on the dire consequences
of this neglect. “One of the critical issues we’ve faced for years is
the shortage of female specialist doctors in various fields,” Dastjerdi
explained. “This has deterred many women from seeking medical attention
until their conditions become chronic or life-threatening, significantly
increasing morbidity and mortality rates among women.” Dastjerdi cited
breast cancer as a stark example. While the global average age of onset
is typically over 55, Iranian women are commonly diagnosed between the
ages of 40 and 49. “Tragically, many women delay seeing a doctor until
tumors have grown beyond 4 to 5 centimeters, making treatment less
effective and mortality rates alarmingly high,” she noted. The root
cause, according to Dastjerdi, is the lack of female cancer specialists
and surgeons in Iran. (ISNA, February 8, 2024) With women
disproportionately affected by the regime’s negligence, the healthcare
crisis serves as a stark reminder of the systemic oppression they endure
in Iran.>>

Since 2022
Shahin Abdolqaderi has been living with 300 shotgun pellets lodged in
her head and face for over two and a half years, following injuries
sustained during Iran's 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom protests. The story of
Abdolqaderi was revealed by Farhad Mahmoudi, whose brother was killed
during the same protests. Mahmoudi shared medical scan images showing
the pellets embedded throughout Abdolqaderi's face. He also explained
that security pressures had prevented her from disclosing her condition
until now. Abdolqaderi's husband, Osman Mameh, was detained by security
forces in Boukan on November 18, 2022, and remains missing. Despite the
family's repeated inquiries to security, judicial, and supervisory
institutions in West Azerbaijan province, authorities have only
responded by saying they "will inform" the family of his status. During
the 2022 nationwide protests, Iranian security forces systematically
targeted protesters' faces and sensitive body parts with shotgun
pellets.

The Mehr-o-Mah commercial complex near Qom in central Iran was sealed on
Sunday. Authorities temporarily closed the facility, citing “improper
hijab” among visitors - just two days after a video circulated showing a
confrontation between patrons and morality enforcers. Footage from April
3 shows around 30 hijab enforcers entering the roadside complex and
confronting visitors over hijab rules. Business owners and travelers
protested the intervention, resulting in a physical altercation that
reportedly left several morality enforcers injured. This isn’t the first
closure for the facility. The Mehr-o-Mah complex was previously sealed

<<Iranian Directors Sentenced to Prison for ‘My Favorite Cake’ Film
Iranian filmmakers Behtash Sanaeeha and Maryam Moghadam have been
sentenced to prison for their film "My Favorite Cake", along with
producer Gholamreza Mousavi. The filmmakers said on Monday that after
visiting Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court following the Nowruz
holidays, they were informed of the verdicts against them as the first,
second, and third defendants in the case. The court sentenced the
directors to 14 months of suspended imprisonment for “propaganda
activities against the Islamic Republic." All three defendants also
received one-year suspended prison terms for “participating in the
production of obscene content,” along with the confiscation of
equipment. "My Favorite Cake", despite having a production permit, was
filmed in Iran with actors Lili Farhadpour and Esmail Mehrabi without
adhering to mandatory hijab requirements. The film follows an elderly
woman living alone in Tehran as she confronts loneliness.
My Favorite Cake won the FIPRESCI Jury Prize at Berlinale and the Silver
Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival.
The filmmakers are now on trial as part of a wider crackdown on
independent artists who push back against state restrictions.>>

<<Death of a Judge: How Hossein Ali Nayyeri Confiscated Baha'i
Properties in Iran
Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Baha'i citizens in Iran have faced
pressure through the illegal confiscation of their property. Many shops,
lands, personal belongings, homes, and even household items have been
seized by order of the Islamic Revolutionary Court under government
seizure laws. Hossein Ali Nayyeri, a member of the "Death Committee"
responsible for the 1988 executions who died last week, ordered the
seizure of numerous Baha'i properties during his ten-year tenure leading
the Article 49 Court and the execution of Imam Khomeini's order.
Exercising his extraordinary powers, Nayyeri authorized these seizures
despite legal objections. Between 1989 and 2000, Nayyeri, as head of the
special courts for Article 49 of the Constitution, issued numerous
confiscation orders targeting Baha'i citizens' assets. For many Baha'is,
Nayyeri’s name became synonymous with property seizure. Numerous
letters, complaints, and memoirs from Baha'is document how their
properties were taken under his direction. Hossein Azami, a Baha'i
citizen, wrote a complaint letter describing how Nayyeri rejected a
court ruling in his favor. Azami wrote, "My ownership was confirmed by
verdict... issued by Branch 16 of the Islamic Revolutionary Court, but
Mr. Nayyeri, head of Imam Khomeini's Order Courts and Article 49 of the
Constitution, unjustly rejected it. “Following this, on October 11,
1999, officials from the Executive Headquarters forcibly entered my home
by climbing over the wall, severely beat me, terrorized my family, and
forced us to leave." “They removed all my household belongings with
several trucks to an unknown location, leaving my family and me
homeless, without even basic necessities or clothing.”
Another case involved the seizure and sale of Paridokht Vahdat-Hagh’s
residence.
Her husband, Hossein Vahdat-Hagh, was among the Baha'is executed in the
1980s. He was arrested in October 1981 and executed six months later on
February 28, 1982. After his execution, authorities seized their home
and evicted the family. According to Paridokht, this confiscation
occurred even though the judge had only ordered her husband's execution,
not the seizure of their property. The court had even ordered the return
of some belongings, but this was never carried out. After six years of
appeals and correspondence with officials, Paridokht could return to her
home. However, after Nayyeri's appointment to head the Article 49 Court
and his membership, circumstances changed. In 1992, the execution of
Imam Khomeini’s order put the Vahdat-Hagh family apartment up for sale
without any confiscation order. Paridokht Vahdat-Hagh wrote in her
memoirs, "The harassment from the executive headquarters of Imam’s order
began when Judge Nayyeri signed the confiscation order for my husband’s
and children’s properties more than eight years after my husband’s
execution. Two years later, it was converted into a deed, and the
harassment by the execution of Imam Khomeini’s order started."
Vahdat-Hagh sent at least five letters seeking justice to Nayyeri but
never received a response. Another example involves the confiscation of
an elderly Baha'i woman’s home. Nahid Enayati had her residence seized
after traveling abroad to visit her children. In a letter to Nayyeri,
she explained, “I, Nahid Enayati, own five dongs [5/6 of the property]
of the residential house... I purchased this house 24 years ago and have
lived there since." "During this time, I needed to travel abroad to
visit my children but declined because my husband was suffering from an
incurable disease. He passed away a year later... After seven years of
effort requesting a passport from the Islamic Republic, I received one
and official permission to travel abroad to visit my children with this
Islamic Republic passport." “Upon my return, I was told that my
residence had been confiscated. I am a widow with a daughter who is
studying in high school. My livelihood comes from the small rent of this
house. I have no occupation or other property, and I did not leave the
country without permission, so what was the reason for confiscation?"
“It is surprising that despite my presence in Iran and obtaining
official permission and a passport from the Islamic Republic of Iran,
they have proceeded to confiscate my property.”>>
