Shiva Daliri
Iranwire - Oct 22, 2024
<<Two Iranian Women Murdered After Rejecting Marriage Proposals
Two Iranian women were killed by men whose marriage proposals they had
rejected in separate cases. IranWire's investigation reveals that both
women had filed criminal complaints against the men due to harassment.
Still, negligence by law enforcement and judicial authorities in
following up on the complaints resulted in the men's release, ultimately
leading to the murders of these women. A 31-year-old woman named Shiva
Daliri, a resident of northern Rasht, was killed on October 1 for
rejecting a marriage proposal. According to IranWire sources, Daliri and
her mother owned a clothing boutique, and the murder was committed by a
man whose proposal Shiva had rejected. Pardis Rabiee, a women's rights
activist, told IranWire about Shiva: "Shiva had no intention of getting
married. After her father passed away and her mother was left alone, she
felt a strong responsibility toward her. She rejected almost all her
suitors. A man who lived in their neighborhood, who had lost his
parents, had been divorced, and had a history of drug use, had
repeatedly asked Shiva to marry him. The situation escalated to the
point of physical assault. One day, he came to the boutique and attacked
Shiva with punches and kicks, even threatening to kill her." The
inefficacy of Iran's protective laws for women has often led to cases
where women, even after filing legal complaints against their harassers,
received no meaningful protection. In this case, despite Daliri filing a
complaint with the police against the man who had assaulted her, he was
only sentenced to pay a fine in compensation. Pardis Rabiee adds,
"Shiva's suitor didn't pay a single penny. Instead, he threatened and
pressured Shiva into withdrawing her complaint. Shiva, fearing for her
life, ultimately agreed. The man's threats persisted, and after being
released from custody, he even told everyone in the neighborhood, 'Let
Shiva know that I will kill her one day.' A few days later, while Shiva
was alone in the boutique, he entered with a knife, first beating her
and then inflicting several deep wounds that caused severe blood loss
and led to her death."
IranWire has also obtained new information about the murder of Mahdieh
Bavaghar - also known as Shohreh - a 34-year-old woman from southern
Bandar Abbas, who was killed in August in an <honor-related> incident.
According to sources, Shohreh had been separated from her husband for a
year. Twelve years earlier, she had married her cousin, and after their
separation, she lived with her two children. A source told IranWire, "Shohreh
had been selling costume jewelry in Bandar Abbas's market during the
nights for several years. She was a street vendor, struggling to make
ends meet. She met a 55-year-old man who pressured her to marry him. He
promised to buy her a shop if she agreed, but Shohreh wasn't interested
in marrying and filed a complaint due to his harassment at her
workplace. On the night of the incident, after several verbal
altercations and police intervention, the man fled the scene. However,
after the market cleared and the police left, he returned with a box
cutter, fatally wounding Shohreh in the neck. He also attempted suicide
but survived, while Shohreh succumbed to her injuries at the hospital."
A report by the Etemad newspaper said that 78 women were killed by men
close to them over the past six months. The report added that the actual
numbers are likely higher, as the data were compiled based on media
reports alone.>>

Poisoning of 31 Female Students
NCRI - Womens committee - 19 Oct 2024 - in Women's News
<<Poisoning of 31 Female Students in a School in North Khorasan
On the morning of Saturday, October 19, 2024, thirty-one female students
at Jannat Girls' School, located in the town of Samalqan, North Khorasan,
were poisoned. (IRNA News Agency, October 19, 2024) This poisoning was
caused by the release of an unpleasant odor from mercaptan gas barrels
belonging to a nearby gas company. Incidents like this are a stark
reminder of the chronic neglect by the Ministry of Education in
addressing safety concerns in schools across Iran. Despite repeated
accidents and health threats, officials have failed to implement the
necessary safeguards to protect students, leaving them vulnerable to
hazardous conditions. In this case, the proximity of dangerous chemicals
to the school underscores the lack of basic precautions and oversight.
The condition of many schools in Iran, particularly in rural and
underdeveloped areas, reflects years of underfunding and mismanagement.
Deteriorating infrastructure, inadequate safety protocols, and outdated
facilities create an environment where the health and well-being of
students are at constant risk. This poisoning incident highlights a
broader issue of governmental negligence that continues to endanger the
lives of the nation’s children.>>

Niloofar Hamedi and Elahe Mohammadi
Iranwire - Oct 23, 2024
<<Iranian Filmmaker Stands with Journalists Facing Imprisonment
Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof has dedicated his latest film, "The
Seed of the Sacred Fig," to journalists Niloofar Hamedi and Elahe
Mohammadi, who face imprisonment for their coverage of Mahsa Amini's
death in custody. The film premiered at the Vienna Film Festival on
Monday, where Rasoulof displayed images of both journalists during the
screening. Hamedi and Mohammadi have been ordered to report to Tehran's
Evin Prison within five days to begin serving five-year sentences. On
Tuesday, the judiciary spokesperson said that while some of their
charges from 2022 were covered under a Supreme Leader amnesty, they face
additional security-related charges predating that period.

Iranian Filmmaker Stands with Journalists Facing Imprisonment
"These charges are unrelated to journalism," Jahangir claimed,
explaining that the cases proceeded despite the amnesty implemented
during the 2022 protests. The Hammihan newspaper reported that Elahe
Mohammadi had also received a notice to begin her five-year prison
sentence. The enforcement order issued on October 19 gave her five days
to report to Evin Prison. In January, Hamedi and Mohammadi were released
on bail from Evin Prison after spending nearly 400 days in detention.
The judiciary said both journalists were granted temporary release on
$200,000 bail, pending an appeal of their sentences. Hamedi and
Mohammadi were arrested in 2022 after reporting on Mahsa Amini's death.
They were initially sentenced to 13 and 12 years, respectively. The
impending imprisonment has triggered significant outrage on social
media. A petition opposing their sentences has gathered nearly 35,000
signatures, while social media campaigns have gained traction among
Iranian users on X. Rasoulof's support, coupled with growing artistic
and civil society backing for the journalists, highlights the
international concern over their cases.>>

Mohammad Javad Sayyadi
Iranwire - Oct 23, 2024
<<Iranian Police Officer Dies by Suicide After Refusing to Suppress
Protests
A 24-year-old Iranian police officer from Kermanshah Province, Mohammad
Javad Sayyadi, took his own life in Tehran on Sunday following a
prolonged dispute with his superiors over his attempted resignation.
Sayyadi, who had served six years in law enforcement, including four
years at the Police Academy, refused to participate in the suppression
of protests during the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. Despite multiple
attempts to resign, Sayyadi's superiors repeatedly denied his requests,
citing his access to classified information. He had warned authorities
that he would take his own life if they did not grant his resignation.
Sources familiar with the situation told IranWire that Sayyadi visited
the police central headquarters in Tehran last week in a final attempt
to secure his resignation. After being denied again, he died by suicide.
Colleagues in the Kermanshah Intelligence Protection Unit reported that
Sayyadi faced increasing pressure over the past two years, including
multiple detentions and interrogations.
The officer refused to participate in protest suppression, believing
such actions fell outside his organizational duties.>>

Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi
NCRI - Womens committee - 22 Oct 2024 - in Statements, Women's News
<<Journalists Face Imminent Imprisonment Despite Calls to Annul Their
Sentences
A week after the Iranian judiciary’s spokesperson announced the imminent
implementation of the sentences for journalists Niloufar Hamedi and
Elaheh Mohammadi, the formal notifications for their prison terms were
sent to them on Saturday, October 19, 2024, instructing them to report
within five days. The two journalists were released from Evin Prison on
January 14, 2024, each on a temporary bail of 10 billion Tomans, after
spending 16 months in prison. Hamedi’s lawyers argue that her case
should have been closed after she was acquitted of collaborating with a
hostile foreign government. However, despite legal provisions for her to
be pardoned under the 2022 amnesty directive, Niloufar Hamedi has been
ordered to surrender to Evin Prison within five days to serve a
five-year sentence for collusion against national security and
propaganda against the state. Elaheh Mohammadi has also received a
similar notification. The lawyers emphasized that these remaining
charges fall under amnesty and questioned why Hamedi was excluded,
particularly when many others from the 2022 protests, facing harsher
accusations, had been pardoned. They argue that legal and ethical
principles dictate that any uncertainty in the interpretation of the law
should benefit the defendant, urging the judiciary to apply the amnesty
and halt the sentence.
Both journalists now face imprisonment despite calls for their pardon.
The Association of Journalists in Tehran Province issued a statement on
Sunday October 20, urged the head of the Judiciary to use his powers to
annul the sentences issued for Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi.
Another 32,000 signatories to a petition have called on Gholam-Hossein
Mohseni Ejei to stop the implementation of the verdicts of these two
journalists. Niloufar Hamedi, a photojournalist for Shargh newspaper,
took and published the first photo of Mahsa Amini in a coma at the
hospital. Elaheh Mohammadi, a journalist for Ham-Mihan newspaper,
published a report on Mahsa’s funeral and an interview with her father.
Niloufar Hamedi was arrested on September 22, 2022, and Elaheh Mohammadi
on September 29.
Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi were detained in the notorious
Qarchak Prison and relocated to Evin Prison on May 1, 2023.
The 15th Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran sentenced Niloufar
Hamedi to 13 years and Elaheh Mohammadi to 12 years in jail. The
notorious judge Salavati issued the verdicts.>>

Seven political prisoners
Iranwire - Oct 22, 2024
<<Iranian Political Prisoners Launch Hunger Strike, Face Solitary
Seven political prisoners in Iran's Sheiban Prison were sent to solitary
confinement after launching a hunger strike on Saturday. The prisoners -
Ramin Mohammadi, Farshid Kazemi, Maziar Nekooie, Ruhollah Khosravi, Reza
Karimnejad, Ashkan Mohammadi, and Hooman Almasi - who have been detained
for over 14 months without trial are protesting their prolonged
imprisonment. A source close to one of their families said that the
hunger strike was initiated due to "their continued detention and lack
of judicial progress." According to the Human Rights Activists News
Agency (HRANA), most members of the group, including residents from both
Ahvaz and Isfahan, were arrested by security forces in Izeh in August
2023. Hooman Almasi was detained separately in April 2023. Ruhollah
Khosravi, a 34-year-old father of two, is also among the prisoners.
Following initial interrogations at the Ministry of Intelligence's
detention facility in Ahvaz, the men were transferred to Sheiban Prison.
Their cases are currently before the Izeh Prosecutor's Office on
undisclosed national security charges. Despite the ongoing review,
authorities have not disclosed specific charges against any of the
detainees in the 14 months since their arrests.>>

Maryam Akbari
NCRI - Womens committee - 22 Oct 2024 - in Statements, Women's News
<<After 15 Years of Imprisonment Maryam Akbari Is Transferred from Exile
in Semnan Prison to Qarchak Prison for Further Torture and Abuse
October 22, 2024 in Statements, Women's News
After 15 Years of Imprisonment Maryam Akbari Is Transferred from Exile
in Semnan Prison to Qarchak Prison for Further Torture and Abuse
Maryam Akbari Monfared, after 15 years of imprisonment without a single
day of furlough, was transferred from her place of exile in Semnan
Prison to Qarchak Prison in Varamin for increased harassment and abuse.
To prevent Maryam Akbari Monfared’s release after completing her 15-year
sentence, the regime’s judiciary condemned her to an additional 2 years
of imprisonment through another fabricated case.
Maryam, who is one of the longest-serving female political prisoners in
Iran, should have been released in 2019 after serving 10 years in prison
according to the regime’s own laws and regulations. However, the
regime’s judiciary kept her imprisoned for an additional 5 years and has
now added two more years to her sentence. To prevent Maryam’s release,
they convicted her of additional prison time through two separate cases
fabricated by the Ministry of Intelligence, conducting two show trials
in Semnan and Evin. Her new alleged crimes are “propaganda against the
system” and “insulting the leadership, assembly and collusion, spreading
lies and disturbing public opinion, and inciting people against national
security.” However, Maryam Akbari Monfared’s main crime is seeking
justice in 2016 for her sister and three brothers who were martyred.
Alireza Akbari was martyred under torture in September 1981, and
Gholamreza Akbari was executed in 1985. Roghayeh and Abdolreza Akbari
were martyred during the political prisoners’ massacre in 1988. In
another vile and predatory action, in July 2024, the regime’s judiciary
issued an order to confiscate the property of Maryam Akbari and her
relatives for seeking justice for her three brothers and sister who were
executed. Javaid Rahman, the UN Special Rapporteur, wrote about Maryam
in his report on “Brutal Crimes” in Iran published last July: “One
striking example is political prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared, who
showed great courage by filing a complaint from prison in 2016 regarding
the execution of her siblings in the 1988 massacre. In response to
filing the complaint, Maryam Akbari Monfared faced increasing pressure,
including denial of visits and forced exile far from her children, and
despite serving a 15-year sentence without even one day of furlough, she
has been sentenced to an additional 2 years in prison. The goal is to
force her to give up seeking accountability.” Prof. Javaid Rehman, the
UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, wrote about Maryam Akbari in his report
on “Atrocity Crimes” in Iran published last July: ” One poignant example
illustrating this pattern of harassment and persecution is the case of
Maryam Akbari-Monfared, a political prisoner in the country. Ms.
Akbari-Monfared displayed immense courage by filing an official
complaint from inside prison on 15 October 2016, addressing the Iranian
judiciary regarding the execution of her siblings during the 1988
massacre. In response to her pursuit of accountability, she has faced
increased pressure while incarcerated, including the denial of
visitations and her forced exile to a remote location, far from her
children… “Despite enduring a 15-year sentence without a single day of
furlough, … she was summoned to the Courthouse of Evin Prison and
arraigned on five new charges, subsequently receiving an additional
two-year sentence… her continued detention is aimed at coercing her into
renouncing her pursuit of accountability.” The Women’s Committee of the
National Council of Resistance of Iran, as noted in its statement of
October 12, 2024, once again calls on the UN High Commissioner and Human
Rights Council, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, the
Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women, and other human rights and
women’s rights advocates to strongly condemn the inhumane treatment of
political prisoners, especially female prisoners, by the clerical regime
and take immediate action for the release of Maryam Akbari.

Soudabeh Irandegani
Iranwire - Oct 21, 2024
<<Iranian Woman Faces Death Penalty Over Son's Crime
Human rights organizations have raised concerns about the imminent
execution of Soudabeh Irandegani, a 34-year-old Iranian woman sentenced
to death for <premeditated murder.> According to the Norway-based Iran
Human Rights organization, Irandegani is scheduled to be executed in
Iranshahr Prison. Irandegani, a mother of six, was arrested in 2022 and
sentenced to death for a crime she did not commit. According to a source
familiar with the case, she confessed to the murder to protect her son,
who was the actual perpetrator. "Irandegani had a verbal altercation
with another woman. Unfortunately, her son intervened, leading to the
accidental death of the other woman's five-year-old child. Irandegani
took the blame to protect her son," the source explained. The victim's
family is demanding two billion tomans ($31,000) in blood money, with
800 million tomans ($12,500) already paid. The family has until October
29th to pay the remaining amount or face the execution. The blood money
rate in Iran, set at 1.2 billion tomans by the judiciary, can be
increased by the victim's family when making their demands.>>

Pezeshkian Must Be Questioned
Center for Human Rights in Iran - 15 Oct 2024 - Written by Shahriar Kia
<<Iran's Clerical Regime Intensifies Crackdown Amid Rising Public
Discontent
The clerical regime in Iran is ramping up its campaign of oppression
against its own people, escalating efforts to crush dissent and maintain
control in the face of growing resistance. Recent actions, such as
brutal punishments and increased surveillance, indicate a regime
desperate to preserve its hold on power amid a fragile and volatile
domestic situation. In a shocking display of cruelty, the regime's
Judiciary has requested hand amputation for eight individuals accused of
theft in Tehran. According to the state-affiliated Hamshahri newspaper
on October 12, the special prosecutor requested the harshest punishment-Hudud-calling
for the amputation of hands. This inhumane measure has sparked outrage,
especially considering the regime’s leaders, including those in the
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), are implicated in some of the
largest thefts in Iran's history, squandering billions in national
resources through corruption, military ventures, and nuclear programs.
Further evidence of the regime's efforts to fortify its control came
from a statement by Ahmadreza Radan, head of the State Security Forces,
announcing that 18,000 police body cameras will be deployed by the end
of the year. Of these, 10,000 will function offline, while the rest will
operate online, amplifying the regime’s surveillance apparatus.
Additionally, Tehran's traffic police have been equipped with 150 more
heavy-duty motorcycles to strengthen enforcement capabilities.
The regime’s reliance on brutality and repression is clear not only
through physical measures but also in rhetoric. Senior clerics close to
the regime have made incendiary comments reflecting the government's
paranoia and fear of internal unrest. For instance, Ahmad Alamolhoda,
Friday Prayer Imam in Mashhad, spoke on October 12, citing Supreme
Leader Ali Khamenei's recent remarks on preventing cultural infiltration
by <enemy agents.> He suggested that Iran cannot afford national unity
at the expense of morality, alluding to the need to suppress internal
dissenters who, in his words, aim to raise the flag of the enemy. This
rhetoric reflects the regime's deep fear of another popular uprising,
like those in recent years following the death of Mahsa Amini. As
Mohammad Ebadizadeh, the regime's Friday Prayer Imam in Bandar Abbas,
stated on October 12, "We are far less worried about enemy planes coming
and bombing a specific point-that is not our concern. We are more
concerned about the psychological warfare inside the country. We worry
that their agents and affiliates may try to drag this nation into chaos
and unrest, and we must stay vigilant against the enemy's tricks and
actions within our society." His remarks highlight the regime's greater
fear of internal unrest over external threats. The clerics' fixation on
controlling domestic dissent underscores the fragile state of their
rule, which stands on shaky ground as economic conditions worsen, and
public anger grows. For over four decades, Iran’s rulers have relied on
foreign wars, proxy conflicts, and brutal internal repression to
maintain power. From Khomeini's destructive eight-year war with Iraq to
Khamenei's current military adventures across the Middle East, the
regime's survival strategy has centered on exporting crises beyond its
borders. Yet today, the clerical regime faces a far more dangerous
foe-its people. With public discontent rising and protests erupting
across the country, the regime knows that even external threats could
become deadly, as the Iranian people are ready to seize any opportunity
to overthrow the dictatorship. This is why the regime has intensified
its crackdown on supporters of the People's Mojahedin Organization of
Iran (PMOI/MEK), the country's main internal resistance force. The
judiciary recently sentenced several PMOI supporters, including boxing
champion Mohammad Javad Vafaie Sani, Behrouz Ehsani, and Mehdi Hassani
to death. This crackdown comes amid an alarming rise in executions, with
more than 260 inhuman sentences carried out since July 2024 under
President Pezeshkian, as the regime escalates its repression in response
to increasing public support for opposition movements. As the regime's
desperation mounts, so too does the need for international action. The
global community cannot remain silent while the Iranian regime
intensifies its campaign of oppression, torture, and executions. The use
of brutal punishments such as hand amputation and the death penalty to
subdue the population is an unacceptable violation of human rights. The
time has come for all nations, particularly those engaging
diplomatically or economically with Iran, to condition any relationship
with the clerical regime on the immediate halt of executions and
systemic abuses. Anything less than this would betray the Iranian
people's fight for freedom and dignity. Countering the Iranian regime is
not just about standing up for the people of Iran-it is also vital for
securing regional peace and global security. By holding the regime
accountable and putting an end to its repressive tactics, the
international community can serve both humanity within Iran and the
broader goal of stability across the region and the world.>>
