Varisheh Moradi
Medyanews - October 15, 2024
<<A letter from Evin: Warisheh Moradi declares 'indefinite hunger
strike' against Iran's death penalty
Imprisoned Kurdish women activist Warisha Moradi has declared an
indefinite hunger strike from within Evin Prison, releasing a powerful
second letter that highlights the profound suffering endured by women
and freedom-seekers under Iran's oppressive regime. She calls upon
international organisations to urgently address the alarming rise in
executions across Iran.
A letter from Evin: Warisheh Moradi declares 'indefinite hunger strike'
against Iran's death penalty
Imprisoned Kurdish activist Warisheh Moradi has launched an indefinite
hunger strike from Tehran's notorious Evin Prison, protesting Iran's
escalating human rights abuses, particularly the alarming rise in
executions. In a defiant second letter from behind bars, Moradi appeals
to international organisations, highlighting the ongoing suffering of
women and freedom-seekers under the oppressive Iranian regime.
Moradi's letter addresses the broader Middle Eastern conflict,
describing how authoritarian regimes and global capitalist powers have
turned the region into a battleground, with women and marginalised
groups bearing the brunt of the violence. She draws parallels between
Iran's domestic repression and cross-border wars, condemning the
regime's mass executions as part of a strategy to silence dissent.
Moradi's hunger strike coincides with the European and World Day against
the Death Penalty and is part of her call for global solidarity, urging
the international community to oppose both Iran's internal human rights
violations and its role in regional conflicts.
Read our translation of Moradi's letter below:
To the Free Society and International Organisations
The fires of war have engulfed the entire Middle East-a conflict that
has raged for decades across this ancient land under the guise of a
so-called new order. These flames suffocate society, consuming ever more
of this beautiful human existence with each wave of violence. The
neoliberal policies of the global capitalist system, aimed at
consolidating its dominance in the Middle East, combined with the
ambitions of traditional regional powers, have exposed this war like
never before. On one side, the West seeks to reshape the Middle East,
not through peace, but through war. Despite its failed attempts to
homogenise the region and erase its rich history and culture, the West
persists. Meanwhile, conservative states in the region, stoking
nationalism and religious fervour, continue to fan the flames. The
various repercussions of these conflicts, coupled with the escalating
violence, risk ushering in a dangerous rise of fascism across the
region. It is evident that this war will continue, likely drawing in
vast areas of the region. Amid these ongoing challenges, the Islamic
Republic of Iran-after years of attempting to create a "Shia
Crescent"-now speaks of an Arab NATO and the unity of the Muslim Ummah.
The recently diplomatic traffic [of iranian officials] to Arab countries
underscore this plan. Yet, these contradictions, challenges, and
rivalries can only lead to further devastation in the Middle East. The
people-particularly women-who have already suffered under authoritarian
regimes now face additional threats from the havoc wrought by this war.
In short, while global capitalism seeks to weaken and control the
nation-states of the region, this is far from a support for the people,
especially women. In the power struggles among rival forces,
society-particularly women and children—are the true victims. They are
violated, forced to flee their homelands, or conscripted into the
service of warlords. A critical issue that must be addressed is that the
rise in domestic repression is intrinsically linked to these
cross-border wars. In other words, both are inextricably connected. This
creates a grim equation in the region, and Iran is no exception. On the
contrary, it follows the same path it did in the 1980s, when mass
executions of prisoners and freedom-seekers took place alongside
conflicts outside its borders. The crucial issue now, as history recalls
the events of the 1980s, is to ensure that history does not repeat
itself. In recent years, the Islamic Republic has attempted to portray
itself as an island of peace amidst the turmoil in the Middle East. Yet
its domestic and foreign policies have proven unsuccessful. Internally,
the totalitarian regime faces mounting pressure, and should it fail to
seize its last opportunities to retreat from tyranny, it will inevitably
face the consequences. At the same time, conditions continue to
deteriorate-economically, politically, socially, and psychologically.
Human rights violations are on the rise, with 531 executions carried out
since the start of this year. Last year, 811 individuals were executed,
marking a 35% increase in the execution of women compared to the
previous year. These figures illustrate the regime's utter disregard for
improvement. Instead, through its policies of denial and elimination of
those it considers "other", it is driving society toward ruin. Despite
this painfully obvious reality, it remains essential to communicate
these bitter truths to the world. The struggle against this situation
and opposition to this tyrannical regime fall upon us, the prisoners,
just as it falls upon others. As someone who has worked to transform
society and impart meaning to life, and who stands in solidarity with
women and all oppressed peoples, my decisions and actions are intended
to bring attention to the current situation. My stand against the
oppression of freedom-seekers is not for personal gain. I am undertaking
an indefinite hunger strike on the International Day Against the Death
Penalty with this very purpose. If you see the toll of war and cry "No
to War," you must also recognize the domestic killings and daily
executions carried out under the guise of political Islam. Do not allow
cross-border wars to obscure the issue of internal repression. Through
this hunger strike, I aim to ensure that the voices of domestic fighters
who have bravely stood up are not lost amidst the clamour of war and
futile ventures. To this end, I announce my indefinite hunger strike in
solidarity with the global campaigns of #No_to_Executions, spearheaded
by groups, institutions, and international organisations dedicated to
abolishing the death penalty.

Shakila Monfared
Iranwire - October 18, 2024
<<Iranian Authorities Cut Off Political Prisoner's Contact with Family
Shakila Monfared, a political prisoner incarcerated in Tehran's Evin
Prison, has been completely isolated from her family and legal counsel.
The authorities of the Islamic Republic have denied her both in-person
visits and phone calls. Since September 28, Monfared has been unable to
establish telephone contact with her family and lawyer. She was also
barred from in-person visits with them for five weeks. Branch 26 of the
Revolutionary Court in Tehran sentenced Monfared to four years and two
months in prison for opposing compulsory hijab. The deprivation of
communication marks the latest in a series of restrictions imposed on
her during her imprisonment. She was initially sentenced in 2021 on
charges of <propaganda against the Islamic Republic> and <insulting the
sacred.> She was later sentenced to two years and eight months in prison
on charges of <membership in anti-regime groups> and <spreading lies.>
IranWire obtained an audio file last year in which Monfared disclosed
severe symptoms of stomach acid reflux, kidney stones, and a painful
gallbladder condition. Despite requiring urgent medical care,
authorities have repeatedly denied her medical leave.>>

Women executed in Iran
NCRI - Womens committee - 18 Oct 2024 - in Women's News
<<Hamedan Central Prison: Two Prisoners, including a Woman, Executed
Amid a surge of executions in Iran, the mullahs’ regime hanged two
prisoners, including a woman, at dawn on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, in
Hamedan Central Prison. The identity of the woman executed in Hamedan
remains unknown. She had been sentenced to death on drug-related
charges. As of the time this report was prepared, the execution of these
two prisoners has not been announced by government officials or state
media.
32 women executed in the past year, 23 in 2024
The Iranian regime is the world's top record holder of executions of
women.
According to the data recorded by the NCRI Women's Committee, the number
of women executed in Iran has sharply increased over the past year, with
32 executions recorded between October 2023 and October 2024. This marks
a troubling rise from previous years, up from 19 women executed in
2022-2023 and 21 in 2021-2022. The current year's figure is particularly
alarming, surpassing the average rate of 21 executions under Ebrahim
Raisi by 11 and more than double the annual average of 15 under former
president Hassan Rouhani. Given the clandestine nature of executions and
the lack of public announcement by the judiciary, it is evident that the
actual number is higher than reported. This surge underscores the
Iranian regime's growing use of capital punishment, including against
women-an escalation in human rights abuses now seen under the
administration of Masoud Pezeshkian.
The total number of executions in Iran in 2024 has surpassed 600, so
far, with more than 300 prisoners including 12 women executed since
Pezeshkian took office. It further proves that regardless of who holds
the presidency, the rights of the Iranian people, especially women,
continue to be trampled.>>

<<Iranian Lawyer Imprisoned for Advocating Bar Association Independence
The Islamic Republic's authorities have sentenced Iranian lawyer Mehdi
Karimi to one year in prison for <propaganda> charges. The Tehran
Revolutionary Court's Branch 29 issued the verdict on Monday. Judge
Seyed Ali Mazloumi found Karimi, a member of the Central Bar
Association, guilty of <propaganda activities against the Islamic
Republic.> On February 5, Karimi and two other lawyers attended a court
session at the same court. He had been summoned and notified to present
his defense against the charge. HRANA, a human rights news agency,
reported that Karimi gained attention in August 2023 when he led a
protest march in Tehran, advocating for the Bar Association's
independence. Earlier this year, two United Nations experts denounced
the "enormous obstacles and pressures" faced by Iranian lawyers who
provide legal support to protesters. Since nationwide protests began in
September 2022, at least 66 lawyers have been arrested and detained. "In
an attempt to both intimidate them and prevent them from representing
protestors, eleven of these lawyers have been sentenced, and 47 have
been released pending trial," the experts said. Many others have faced
intimidation, harassment, and disbarment.>>

No to Executions Tuesdays
Center for Human Rights in Iran - Oct 15 2024 - Written by Mahmoud
Hakamian
<<38th Week of "No to Executions Tuesdays" Campaign: Prisoners Defy
Brutal Crackdown in Iran
In a courageous act of defiance, political prisoners across 22 prisons
in Iran continued their hunger strike this week, marking the 38th
consecutive week of the "No to Executions Tuesdays" campaign. This
latest strike coincides with the aftermath of the clerical regime's
recent execution spree, where the state executed seven prisoners on
World Day Against the Death Penalty and over 36 people in just the last
week, including 19 hangings in a single day. The participating prisons,
including Evin, Ghezel Hesar, and prisons in cities such as Tehran,
Mashhad, and Shiraz, are united in their stand against the Iranian
regime's increasing reliance on executions as a tool of suppression. In
their powerful statement, the prisoners condemned the regime's barbaric
actions, noting that the Judiciary is now referring cases seeking hand
amputation for eight alleged thieves in Tehran. "This mocks and tramples
on international human rights laws," the statement read, "a clear
attempt to quell dissent and prevent potential uprisings."
The prisoners emphasized the urgent need for global attention, as the
hunger strike has been ongoing for over eight months. "We are resisting
these inhumane death sentences, regardless of the accusations against
us, to give voice to those condemned to death." The campaign has gained
international recognition, with UN Special Rapporteur on Iran, Ms. May
Sato, acknowledging its significance in her recent remarks. However, the
prisoners urged for more decisive action: "We call on Ms. Sato, the
Human Rights Council, and all international human rights bodies for
immediate and stronger measures to stop the regime's killing machine.
The lives of countless defenseless prisoners depend on it." Their
message reflects a deep resolve to continue their fight despite the
regime’s relentless brutality. "We will not allow them to silence us
with fear. Our resistance is our greatest weapon," the prisoners
declared, highlighting the spirit that drives their continued hunger
strike in the face of danger. This movement, driven by the courage of
political prisoners, is a rallying cry for justice in a nation plagued
by the horrors of the regime's execution machinery.
As the Iranian regime faces growing pressure both inside and outside the
prison walls, the 38-week-long campaign is a testament to the unyielding
spirit of resistance. It calls upon the international community to
intervene, not only to save the lives of those at risk but also to
challenge the regime's ongoing crimes against humanity. Only through
collective action can the world stand in solidarity with the Iranian
people and confront the regime's atrocities.>>
