NCRI - November 22, 2024
<<Arezu Azarm-Sefat Denied Medical Care Amid Severe Pain in Evin Prison
Arezu Azarm-Sefat, a political prisoner held in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison, has been suffering from severe shoulder and arm pain for some three weeks. Despite her condition, she has been denied adequate medical attention, raising serious concerns about her health and the prison's negligence in providing essential healthcare.
Worsening Condition Without Proper Treatment
The condition of Arezu Azarm-Sefat has significantly restricted her movement, leaving her unable to use her arm. Attempts to alleviate her pain, such as immobilizing her arm with a sling, have proven ineffective. Even the slightest contact with her arm intensifies her pain. According to sources close to her family, Arezu was reluctantly transferred to the prison's clinic only after protests by her fellow inmates. However, she was sent back to her cell without undergoing medical imaging or a thorough examination. The prison doctor reportedly dismissed the need for urgent medical care, advising her family to seek treatment outside the prison-an option not currently available to her. This neglect contradicts the legal obligation of the Iranian regime to provide diagnostic and treatment services for prisoners with health issues.
Family Struggles and Systemic Neglect
Arezu Azarm-Sefat has an elderly mother who is unable to actively advocate for her daughter's health, further compounding the difficulty of securing proper care. The ongoing pain and lack of treatment have heightened fears that her condition could worsen or lead to long-term physical complications.
Background on Arezu Azarm-Sefat
Arezu Azarm-Sefatwas first arrested by Iranian security forces on May 1, 2024, and detained in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, a section run by the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence. After completing her interrogation, she was temporarily released on bail on May 20, 2024. Previously convicted on charges of alleged collaboration with opposition groups, she was initially sentenced to five years in prison. Following a legal appeal, her sentence was reduced to three years and nine months. On August 26, 2024, Arezu was taken back into custody to serve her reduced sentence in the women's ward of Evin Prison.
A Systematic Denial of Rights
Arezu's case highlights the broader issue of the Iranian regime's systemic neglect of prisoners, particularly those incarcerated on political grounds. Denying prisoners access to medical care is a common tactic used to exert psychological and physical pressure, further exacerbating their suffering.
The ongoing negligence in providing medical care to Arezu Azarm-Sefat exemplifies the dire conditions faced by political prisoners in Iran. Her worsening health, coupled with the prison’s refusal to meet her basic medical needs, underscores the Iranian regime's disregard for human rights.
This situation calls for international attention and action. Advocacy groups and global institutions must press the Iranian regime to uphold its legal and moral obligations to ensure the safety and well-being of prisoners under its custody. Arezu Azarm-Sefat's case is not just a personal tragedy-it is a stark reminder of the ongoing human rights abuses in Iran's prison system.>>

An Iranian student has been sentenced to prison for appearing at her University of Tehran thesis defense without a headscarf. Leila Hosseinzadeh shared the court ruling on Instagram on November 22, saying that she was neither informed of the charges nor notified of any court proceedings.
"I am completely unaware of the details of the verdict," she wrote, adding that she has "no hope for an appeal or any other legal process." In August 2022, she endured a violent arrest outside her Tehran residence. She was detained for over four months despite holding a medical exemption from harsh punishment, as certified by the Legal Medicine Organization. Throughout her academic career, Hosseinzadeh has faced multiple arrests related to her political and student union activities, often involving extended periods of detention without trial.>>

Medyanews - November 24, 2024
<<End repression of Kurdish women: Thousands march across Europe
While Turkish authorities ban the chanting of the "Jin jiyan azadi" (Woman, Life, Freedom) in Diyarbakır (Amed), thousands mobilise across Turkey and Europe, with demonstrations in cities including Marseille and Düsseldorf calling for justice for women facing state repression. Turkish security forces confronting Free Women's Movement (TJA) organisers at the historic Ten-Eyed Bridge in the Sur district of Diyarbakır (Amed) on Saturday declared the Kurdish slogan "Jin jiyan azadi" (Woman, Life, Freedom) illegal. Officers informed the women that their traditional rallying cry against gender violence now constituted <propaganda for an illegal organisation>. Although no formal documentation has been presented or notice posted on government websites, the police attempted to prevent women from chanting the slogan, claiming that it was the <terminology of an illegal organisation>. Women at the demonstration responded by continuing to chant "Jin jiyan azadi" and "Biji berxwedana jina" (Long live women's resistance) while playing traditional drums. "This slogan echoes through streets and parliaments worldwide, yet today the Governor of Diyarbakır is attempting to silence it," declared Adalet Kaya, Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party MP for Diyarbakır. "We greet the struggle of women in Afghanistan fighting for their right to education, we say 'Zan zendegi azadi' [Dari for Jin jiyan azadi]. We will not fear these repressive policies, and we will not obey them. The Governor of Diyarbakır has no grasp on reality," said the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Women's Assembly. "This slogan echoes in every corner of the women's struggle worldwide. From Eastern Kurdistan to India, from Rojava to the streets of Europe - no one has the authority to silence this cry uniting women in common rebellion." In the meantime, thousands marched from Canebiere to the Palais-de-Justice in Marseille, France, with the Arin Mirkan Kurdish Women's Association joined by French women's organisations, demanding an end to impunity for violence against women and calling for justice for Kurdish women facing state repression. During a similar demonstration in Reims, France, the seventeen leading organisations carried banners declaring "Your war, our blood", chanting "Jin jiyan azadi". In Lausanne, human rights lawyer Gülseren Yoleri presented stark statistics on femicide: "In Turkey, 582 women were killed in 2023, and 357 in the first ten months of 2024. Of these, 198 were killed with firearms and 77 with bladed weapons." In Dusseldorf, hundreds of Kurdish women were joined by women of various nationalities, their chants of "Jin jiyan azadi" filling the streets from the central station to the courthouse. The Kurdish organisation Women Students in Berlin also organised actions under the banner "No to executions! Yes to free life!" >>

And earlier most inspiring but alas also most disturbing news.

Narges Mohammadi
Medyanews - November 22, 2024
<<Rights groups demand medical release of jailed Iranian Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi
Over 40 human rights organisations urge UN intervention for Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi's medical release from Iran's Evin Prison amid serious health concerns. Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi requires urgent medical care while serving a nearly 14-year prison sentence, as rights groups petition the UN Human Rights Council for her immediate release on humanitarian grounds. The journalist and human rights defender underwent surgery on 14 November to remove a potentially cancerous bone lesion from her leg. Despite her doctor's advice, prison authorities returned her to Evin Prison after just two days. "Years of imprisonment and months of solitary confinement have severely compromised Mohammadi's health, leaving her with multiple serious conditions that cannot be addressed through a short, incomplete hospital visit," the Free Narges Coalition and partner organisations stated in their joint letter. Mohammadi, who won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, has been imprisoned since November 2021 on charges including <propaganda activity against the state> and <collusion against state security>. She previously suffered multiple heart attacks in 2022, requiring emergency surgery. The coalition of more than 40 organisations, including Reporters Without Borders (RSF), warns that Mohammadi's case reflects a broader pattern of medical neglect of prisoners in Iran. They cited the death of poet Baktash Abtin in January 2022 after delays in medical care. "Prison authorities' withholding of essential urgent medical treatment from Mohammadi displays a callous disregard for her health and wellbeing under detention," the letter highlighted. The organisations are calling for Mohammadi's unconditional release and, in the interim, immediate medical furlough. They urge the UN Human Rights Council to ensure Iran implements its previous commitment to provide adequate healthcare for all individuals in custody.>>

Varisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 21 Nov 2024
<<Dozens of grieving families demand reversal of death sentences for Varisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi
Dozens of bereaved families have issued a statement condemning the death sentences handed down by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Highlighting the cases of Kurdish political activists Varisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi, the families have called for the annulment of their death sentences and an end to capital punishment in Iran. In conjunction with this statement, a petition has been launched, urging justice-seekers, activists, and advocates for fairness to amplify the voices of Verisha and Pakhshan. The petition demands urgent and concrete actions to abolish death sentences in Iran. To date, over 2,000 political and civil activists, journalists, and bereaved families have signed the petition, reflecting growing national and international concern over the use of capital punishment in Iran.
The complete statement is provided below.
"Statement by Victim Families and Human Rights Activists on the Death Sentence of Varishe Moradi, Pakhshan Azizi and the Wave of Executions in Iran"
For months, the cry of "No to executions" has been echoing from the women's ward of Evin Prison and 24 other prisons across Iran. In the past two years, amid a surge in the number of executions and with over 250 people executed since the new administration took office, an average of five people are executed daily in Iran.
We, a group of bereaved families and civil and human rights activists in Iran, express our profound concern and sorrow over this unprecedented increase in executions. This joint call to action is a collective protest, urging the people of Iran, human rights organizations, and international institutions to take immediate and decisive steps.
To the People of Iran: By attending protests and amplifying your voices, show the world that we demand an end to executions and a commitment to human rights in Iran. Your solidarity and participation are potent forces in this struggle.
To Human Rights Organizations: We call on domestic and international human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and the UN Human Rights Council, to continuously monitor the situation of prisoners in Iran and increase pressure on the Islamic Republic to halt executions.
To World Governments and International Organizations: We urge governments and international bodies to use all diplomatic and legal tools to hold the Islamic Republic accountable and prevent state-sanctioned murder by this regime. Following the execution of Jamshid Sharmahd, a German-American citizen, the closure of three Iranian consulates in Germany was a positive step toward responding to these executions.
To Media and Journalists: We appeal to domestic and international media and journalists to widely cover the alarming rise in executions and human rights violations in Iran, raising awareness and mobilizing public opinion on this crisis.
To the Iranian Diaspora: We urge all Iranians abroad to organize rallies, protests, and meetings with government representatives and parliament members to intensify pressure on the Islamic Republic.
To Save Varishe Moradi, Pakhshan Azizi, and all those sentenced to death, we call for simultaneous protests in dozens of cities worldwide. We hope that November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, will be a day when voices in numerous cities across the globe rise together to cry out
In conclusion, as a group of victims' families seeking justice and activists, we oppose all forms of state repression and violence against the people. We firmly believe that we can only achieve a fair and peaceful society through justice, equality, and respect for human rights.>>
