<<Students Hospitalized After Chemical Attack at Tehran Girls' School
Multiple students were hospitalized following an apparent chemical
attack at a girls' school in Shahr-e Rey near Tehran.
The attack happened at Maktab al-Zahra school on November 3, when
students began experiencing severe coughing shortly after entering their
classrooms at 7:45 a.m. The school, which serves grades 7 to 9, has an
enrollment of about 400 students. According to students and parents who
spoke to IranWire, pupils evacuated their classrooms and gathered in the
schoolyard as symptoms developed. The school had previously experienced
a similar chemical attack last year. The exact number of students
requiring medical attention in this latest incident has not been
confirmed. Maktab al-Zahra is among several Iranian girls' schools that
have reported chemical attacks in the last couple of years, raising
concerns about targeted attacks against female education facilities.
Sources reported that the school principal, identified as Ms. Tanha,
compelled some students to return upstairs to clear the classrooms,
offering discipline point incentives for compliance and threatening
point deductions for refusal. The reason given for sending students as
enforcers to the classrooms was the malfunctioning of the school's
loudspeakers. After spending a brief time sitting in the schoolyard,
they were told to return to their classrooms. One student said, "When we
returned to the classrooms, the bad smell was even more intense and
unbearable and made everyone feel worse. They didn't let us leave the
school, saying that the Education Department had not granted
permission." According to information obtained by IranWire, some
students pushed the principal to escape the school to save their lives.
Students said that the school had been decorated with balloons, the
contents of which were unknown, for the Student Day event on November 3.
The Balloons of Student Day
IranWire has learned that every time a balloon popped, a bad smell
spread through the school, making the situation worse. Students who
managed to leave the school were forced back inside under threats. The
principal told them, <There's nothing serious - go back inside.>
Meanwhile, students continued to feel unwell. According to those who
shared their experiences, they were not allowed to contact their parents
until one of the mothers became aware of the situation and alerted the
fire department. When firefighters arrived, they ordered the full
evacuation of the school. One parent said, "Some of the students whose
conditions worsened were taken to medical centers by ambulance. After
the ambulance left, the principal forced the remaining students back
inside the school. Once they returned to the classrooms, it seemed like
the poisonous gas had been released again and left no safe space in the
school. Finally, the principal and the school supervisor sent the
students home." Students said that the ambulances present refused to
transfer some of them to medical centers. One parent explained, "Some
students who developed severe respiratory issues only received
respiration devices from the emergency personnel at the scene. Others,
who were struggling to breathe, fainted. Eventually, after loud protests
from some of the fathers, the medical teams reluctantly transported the
critically ill students to hospitals out of fear." The parent added,
"When parents said to take their children to the hospital, they were
told, 'If you really care about your child, take them to the hospital
yourself.'"
Interrogation of Students Began at the Hospital
Upon arrival at the medical center, the students were admitted for
treatment. However, security forces began interrogations immediately and
without delay. Three men - one in police uniform, another in plain
clothes, and a third in a suit - questioned the girls in the ICU without
their parents being present. The medical staff, citing overcrowding in
the ICU, prevented parents from entering the ward. A student recounted,
"The interrogators did not introduce themselves or state their
positions. They spoke to us individually and separately. First, the man
in the suit entered, followed by the police officer, and finally the man
in plain clothes." The student added, "First, they made the parents
leave the room and began questioning the children. They asked what
symptoms we had and how the incident happened. I said, 'We were told a
balloon popped, and that's what really happened.' "One of them replied,
'So you're talking from previous experiences?' I answered, 'I'm just
describing what I saw and heard.' Then they asked, 'Who do you think is
responsible? Who do you think did this?’" Another question was whether
the students had mobile phones and if they had taken any pictures.
One student's phone, which contained photos and videos, was confiscated.
After deleting all the files, the phone was returned to the student. The
student said, "In the end, they told us to say it was food poisoning and
not to speak to the media."
Two Years of Chemical Attacks on a School
Maktab al-Zahra is one of the schools targeted during last year’s series
of poisoning incidents at girls' schools. To date, the source of these
poisonings - referred to in the media as chemical attacks - remains
unknown. During these attacks, students at numerous schools across Iran
were mysteriously poisoned. The incidents began in December 2022 in a
girls' high school in Qom and continued until March 2023.
Students in other cities, including Borujerd, Sari, Ardabil, Tehran,
Fardis, Khuzestan, Kermanshah, Nishapur, and Mashhad, also fell victim.
The attacks predominantly targeted girls' schools, though a few cases
were reported at boys' schools.
Last year, Mohammad Hassan Asfari, a member of the parliamentary
fact-finding committee, said that by March, more than 5,000 students
across 230 schools in 25 provinces had been affected. Although
investigations into the poisoning and the substance used have not been
made public.
It appears that Maktab al-Islam is the first victim of the chain
poisonings in 2024. This time, green balloons were placed in the
schoolyard, around the podium, and in hallways for Student Day
celebrations. When each balloon popped, the smell of rotting fish filled
the air. One student reported, "The girls were allowed to take the
balloons if they wanted, and the balloons would pop in their hands. The
bad smell even reached the principal's office. When a balloon burst near
me, I felt something enter my throat. The burning sensation was so
intense that I couldn’t speak, and the smell was like rotten fish." A
parent added, "When this happened, the children became dizzy and
nauseous. Then they experienced difficulty breathing and couldn’t catch
their breath. At the same time, their eyes began watering
uncontrollably. Some students even had nervous breakdowns due to the
stress and fear of the situation." The parent explained, "Even in these
conditions, the students were not allowed to contact their parents. When
we arrived, one student was lying in a drainage ditch." According to a
parent, more than 30 students were transferred to nearby medical centers
in Shahr-e Rey. IranWire has not been able to verify this figure
independently.
Firefighters Arrived in Chemical Attack Gear
A parent said, "The firefighters who arrived were wearing specialized
chemical attack clothing and masks. This was despite official claims
that there was no chemical poisoning at the school. The firefighters,
dispatched from the 13 Aban fire station in Shahr-e Rey, told parents
they didn't know what had happened or the source of the smell. But their
gear suggested they had been informed that the school had been targeted
by a chemical attack." According to parents, security agents in plain
clothes, police officers, the representative and head of District 20’s
education department, and three individuals in IRGC uniforms were
present around the school. Students were taken to several hospitals,
including one in Tehran.
One student said, "Blood samples were taken from all of us, but the
results and medical records were not shared with our parents. Most
students were admitted to the ICU. We were given IVs, and a substance
was injected into the drip with a syringe, but we don't know what
medication it was."
A parent described disputes between families and hospital security over
access to the ICU.
"Some families argued with security staff but couldn't get into the
ward. The restrictions were so strict that we weren't even allowed to
stand in the hallways leading to the ICU for fear of seeing who entered
and exited. Our children were interrogated without our knowledge or
consent."
According to several parents, hospital staff even refused to issue
medical leave documents for the affected students.>>
