Pakhshan Azizi
Medyanews - November 8, 2024
<<Iran: Death row prisoner Pakhshan Azizi's cellmates demand justice for
her
Seven inmates of Iran's Evin Prison have written a letter in defence of
Kurdish women's rights activist Pakhshan Azizi, who has been sentenced
to death in Iran, highlighting the unlawfulness and injustice of Azizi's
sentence. Seven inmates of Iran's Evin Prison have written a letter in
defence of Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish women's rights activist imprisoned
alongside them, who was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court in
Tehran on 23 July for membership of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK).
In the letter, her cell mates raise her case and highlight the unlawful
and baseless trial that led to Pakhshan Azizi's conviction. They argue
that her humanitarian work in North and East Syria "providing
humanitarian aid to war victims” is "not a crime". As they explain, “it
is commendable to be present in war zones and provide aid to
war-affected women and children, while enduring the dangers of areas
surrounded by ISIS forces. The response should not be a death sentence".
The letter was first published on Iranian human rights defender and
writer Golrokh Iraee's X (formerly Twitter) account. Iraee has been
imprisoned in Evin Prison since 26 September 2022.
Read a translation of the full letter below:
"Humanitarian aid to war victims is not a crime.
Being present in war zones and providing assistance to women and
children affected by war, and bearing the risks of being in areas
surrounded by ISIS forces, is something that should be praised. The
response to this should not be a death sentence. For about a year, we
have been sharing a cell with Pakhshan Azizi, a social worker and
activist in the field of jineology. After months of solitary
confinement, interrogation, and torture, she was transferred to the
women's ward of Evin Prison. In July of the previous year, in a show
court, without meeting with her lawyer in the days leading up to the
trial and without the opportunity to defend herself, she was sentenced
to death on the base of false accusations. It has been five months since
she has been deprived of contact with her lawyers and family. Even now,
while her case has been sent to the Supreme Court (Divan Ali) for
review, she is still deprived of the right to meet with her lawyers and
consult with them. Pakhshan spent many years of her life providing
humanitarian aid in refugee camps to women and children who had survived
ISIS attacks. After returning to Iran and reuniting with her family, she
was arrested along with several family members. Issuing a death sentence
for a social worker who dedicated herself to helping the victims of ISIS
- whom the Islamic Republic itself claims to fight against – and putting
more pressure on her and her family by restricting her basic rights in
prison is not without ulterior motives. We are deeply concerned about
the consequences of this sentence. A sentence that we see as a response
to the uprising of women against what has been unjustly imposed on them.
Your reaction, before it is too late, will be effective.

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - November 6, 2024
<<Pakhshan Azizi, with her visitation rights still denied, awaits
Supreme Court ruling
Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner sentenced to death, has
been deprived of in-person visits with family members and her lawyers
for the past 125 days. Her case was referred to the Supreme Court around
twenty days ago. According to a report received by the Hengaw
Organization for Human Rights, Pakhshan Azizi, a political prisoner from
Mahabad currently held in Evin Prison, has awaited the Supreme Court's
ruling for 125 days. This period of deprivation coincides with the
second round of Iran’s 14th presidential elections. A source close to
Azizi's family stated that, in addition to being denied in-person visits
for the past four months, she was also prohibited from making phone
calls until three weeks ago. Meanwhile, her lawyers, Amir Raeisian and
Maziar Tataei, are continuing efforts to secure a meeting with her. On
Wednesday, 14 August 2024, Pakhshan Azizi was sentenced to death on
charges of <baghi> (rebellion). Later, a separate case was opened
against her in Branch 3 of the Evin Prosecutor's Office under the charge
of <instigating prison unrest,> for which she received an additional
six-month prison sentence. It is noteworthy that Pakhshan Azizi was
arrested by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence on 4
August 2023 in the Kharazi neighborhood of Tehran. She was initially
held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, known as the Intelligence Detention
Facility, before being transferred to the women's ward of Evin on 11
December 2023. Azizi was previously arrested on 16 November 2009 during
a protest by Kurdish students at the University of Tehran against the
execution of political prisoners in Kurdistan. She was ultimately
released on 19 March 2010, after four months in detention, posting bail
of 100 million tomans. Afterward, facing persistent pressure and threats
from security agencies, Pakhshan Azizi left Iran. She later engaged in
research on the status of women in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan,
working as a social worker to improve their living conditions.>>

Pakhshan Azizi, Varisheh Moradi, Narges Mohammadi, Mahboubeh Rezai, and
Parivash Moslemi
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 22 Sept 2024
<<Evin, Tehran, Iran: Five Female Political Prisoners Sentenced to 27
Months of Imprisonment
Pakhshan Azizi, Varisheh Moradi, Narges Mohammadi, Mahboubeh Rezai, and
Parivash Moslemi, five political prisoners held in Evin Prison, have
been sentenced to an additional total of 27 months and one day of
imprisonment in connection with a case opened due to the women's ward
protest against the execution of Reza Rasaei. According to a report
received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Pakhshan Azizi,
Varisheh Moradi, Narges Mohammadi, Mahboubeh Rezai, and Parivash Moslemi
were recently sentenced to 27 months and one day of imprisonment by the
Branch 2 Criminal Court of Quds Judicial Complex in Tehran, presided
over by Judge Abolfazl Amiri Shahrabi. The case charged them with
<assaulting an officer and defiance.> The verdict was communicated to
them on Saturday, October 18, 2024. As per the ruling, Pakhshan Azizi, a
political prisoner sentenced to death, and Varisheh Moradi, a political
prisoner accused of rebellion, were each sentenced to six months in
prison, while Narges Mohammadi and Mahboubeh Rezai were also sentenced
to six months each, and Parivash Moslemi received three months and one
day. In total, the five women were sentenced to 27 months and one day of
imprisonment. According to informed sources, Parivash Moslemi was
acquitted of the charge of <disrupting prison order,> and the other
prisoners were acquitted of <property damage.> Parivash Moslemi was
present in court, while the other prisoners refused to attend the
session. It is worth noting that this case was opened on August 6
following a protest by several female prisoners in Evin against the
execution of Reza Rasaei's death sentence, who had been arrested during
the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement, which led to a confrontation with
the prison guards. As a result, these prisoners were temporarily
stripped of their right to make phone calls and meet with their families
by the prison's disciplinary committee.>>

Jinha - September 16, 2024
<<Letter from Pakhshan Azizi: The philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi is a
philosophy of life
"The philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi is a philosophy of life," said
Pakhshan Azizi in a letter from Evin prison, marking the second
anniversary of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising in Iran.
News Center- Journalist Pakhshan Azizi, who was sentenced to death on
July 23, 2024 and imprisoned in Evin prison, sent a letter from Evin
prison on the second anniversary of the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" uprising
that sparked in Iran and Rojhilat following the killing of Jina Mahsa
Amini by Iran's so-called <morality police> in Tehran. "Jin, Jiyan,
Azadi is a philosophy of life," Pakhshan Azizi said in the letter,
vowing to strengthen the women's struggle for freedom.
'The 21st century will be the century of women's revolution'
Pakhshan Azizi pointed to women's leading role in society, stressing
that the social role of men should be redefined and there is no
happiness for both sexes until gender equality is achieved. "The
struggle for gender-based equality is an ethical-political struggle
against sexism that has become a tool of governments," her letter said,
stressing that the 21st century will be "the century of women's
revolution."
'People are determined to ensure freedom'
Under current conditions, redesigning and reforming existing systems is
insufficient to ensure freedom, Pakhshan Azizi stressed in her letter.
"The systems must be completely changed. Women's Revolution is not an
action for reform, but for a radical, theoretical and scientific action.
As women, we have common sense and language. We are capable of making
radical and comprehensive changes if we fight against the patriarchal
mindset together, in solidarity with each other."
'The philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi is not a philosophy of death but of
life'
"Ignoring women is an ideological approach and that a strong ideological
struggle should be waged against it," Pakhshan Azizi said, emphasizing
that sexism, scientism, religionism and nationalism target the whole
society by targeting women. "The philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi is not
a philosophy of death but of life. It is a scientific revolution
actualized by Jineology. This philosophy embraced by people must not be
allowed to be deflected at any price. For our revolutionary martyrs, we
should build a society that creates democratic families, preserves its
culture, and has revolutionary consciousness." >>
