Arrests at Yalda Aghafazli memorial
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 8 Nov 2024
<<Security forces raid memorial for Yalda Aghafazli, arrest two people
Security forces of Islamic Republic of Iran raided the
second-anniversary memorial for Yalda Aghafazli, a young artist killed
during the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement, arresting two attendees.
Those arrested include Hossein Naderbeigi, an eye injury victim during
the movement, and another individual, Majid Salahi. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, security
forces disrupted the memorial gathering in Tehran on Friday, November 8,
2024, which was attended by Aghafazli's family and other grieving
families seeking justice. The raid reportedly created an atmosphere of
fear, with security forces using physical violence during the arrests.
Witnesses report that amid the raid, both Naderbeigi, who suffered an
eye injury during previous protests, and Salahi, a family friend, were
detained and taken to an undisclosed location.
Yalda Aghafazli, a 19-year-old artist, was initially arrested by
security forces on October 27, 2022 during the "Woman, Life, Freedom"
movement. After 11 days in detention, she was released on November 6,
only to die under suspicious circumstances five days later, on November
11.>>

NCRI - Womens committee - December 20, 2023 - in The Fallen for Freedom
<<Yalda Aghafazli
Yalda Aghafazli was a defiant young woman striving for freedoms withheld
by the theocratic regime.
She was named Yalda because she was born on December 22, the longest
night of the year in 2002. In Iranian culture, the Winter Solstice is
referred to as Yalda, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and
celebrated accordingly.
Yalda Aghafazli actively participated in the protests that commenced in
September 2022 following the tragic murder of Jina Amini while in the
custody of the Moral Police. Unfortunately, Yalda was arrested on
October 26, just a little over a month into the uprising. The
19-year-old protester spent four days in Evin Prison before being
transferred to the notorious Qarchak Prison, where she remained detained
for another 11 days. In a call from Qarchak Prison, she mentioned that
one couldn't fathom the extent of the beatings she endured in prison to
coerce confessions against her will. "During these 12-13 days, I faced
more beatings than in all my 19 years of life. My voice became hoarse
because I screamed and shouted constantly, yet I remained steadfast and
didn't show any remorse until the very end. They wrote in my file, 'the
accused did not express remorse,' and I said, 'Yes, that's right. I
won't express remorse.' Until the very last moment, I stood by
everything I had done. They accused me of being involved in the riots,
and I admitted to it. I didn't cry; instead, I shouted and screamed so
much that’s why my voice is hoarse. They beat me severely, beyond
imagination! I can't speak much about it here, but once I'm out, I'll
tell you everything face to face. I'll share all the details." In yet
another audio recording, she expresses sheer happiness that she didn’t
yield. She proudly states, "I didn't express any regret until the very
end." In her file, it was noted that <the accused did not express
remorse.> Her reaction? "Yeaaah, exactly!" she exclaims. Upon her
release on bail on November 9, 2022, Yalda felt relieved that news of
her arrest had gained widespread attention, and she expressed deep
gratitude to everyone for their support. A picture taken of her after
being released from prison shows a happy, proud Yalda jumping into the
arms of her uncle. Tragically, two days later, on November 11, reports
surfaced stating that she had died. Initially, it was claimed that she
had thrown herself from a rooftop, but state media later alleged that
she died from a crack overdose.
Yalda jumped into the arms of her uncle upon freedom from jail. The
clerical regime did not allow the victory sign to remain on her
tombstone.
Yalda Aghafazli is among many protesters who died under suspicious
circumstances after their release from prison. These deaths have raised
significant concerns and questions about the treatment these individuals
faced while detained. There are widespread rumors that prison
authorities administer lethal injections to resistant prisoners before
releasing them, leading to their deaths outside prison walls. This
method allows them to evade responsibility for the protester’s death
while instilling fear in the public and deterring others from
participating in anti-regime protests. And yet another audio recording
of Yalda sheds light on the circumstances of her arrest and the arrests
of many protesters, especially young women, by the regime's ruthless
security forces. "They suddenly started chasing me, like they had it out
for me because they couldn't catch me before. I usually went out solo,
and that night near the university on Eghelab Ave, this guy on a
motorcycle yelled, 'Get that kid!' "He zoomed right at me on his bike,
spraying pepper spray straight into my eyes. I tried to block it with my
hands, but he grabbed my hands and tied them up tight with these
wristbands. I couldn't even feel my veins, they were so tight. Then, a
bunch of them pinned me against the wall, pushed me down, and shone a
flashlight in my face, shouting, 'What's your name?' And then with my
eyes shut tight, they dragged me and tossed me into a van." Yalda
Aghafazli is one of the most popular martyrs of the 2022 Iran uprising.
The regime's hirelings have repeatedly scratched and damaged her picture
standing on top of her tombstone. In line with the pressures imposed on
the families of the martyrs of the 2022 Iran uprising, her mother,
Fahimeh Moradi, was arrested on September 17, 2023, on the anniversary
of the Iran Uprising. The regime also summoned Yalda's father and uncle
and forced to cancel their plans to observe the first anniversary of her
loss.
The writing on her tombstone reads, "The daughter of Iran, God created
her happy and free; She did not believe her chains and took wings and
flew away to reach her dreams."

Darya Nazmdeh
NCRI - Womens committee - 8 Nov 2024 - in The Fallen for Freedom
<<Darya Nazmdeh
A Young, Energetic Woman who Sought Justice
Darya Nazmdeh was born on September 11, 1994, in Savojbolagh, a city in
Alborz Province, Iran. Darya Nazmdeh lived with her parents in Karaj, a
large city just west of Tehran, known for its diverse population and
bustling life. Darya was vibrant, full of energy, and had a joyful
spirit that was cherished by everyone around her. In 2022, after the
tragic death of Mahsa Amini in police custody, protests erupted across
Iran, as citizens demanded justice and change. Like many young Iranians,
Darya joined the demonstrations, her voice rising against injustice.
Hadis Najafi
On November 3, 2022, a massive protest was held on the Tehran-Karaj
highway to mark the fortieth day since the death of Hadis Najafi,
another young woman who had become a symbol of the movement. Tens of
thousands gathered that day. But on the way back from the Behesht-e
Sakineh cemetery, where mourners had gathered, security forces launched
a brutal assault, using sound bombs and tear gas against the crowd. Many
were injured, and even more were detained. Darya Nazmdeh and her friends
encountered a patrol vehicle from the notorious Sarallah unit, known for
its role in cracking down on protests. While her friends managed to
flee, Darya chose to stand her ground, confronting the officers. They
responded with extreme violence, beating her severely with batons,
striking her head and face repeatedly, before forcing her into their
vehicle. In custody, Darya Nazmdeh was subjected to merciless torture.
The abuse was so extreme that she succumbed to her injuries and died
under interrogation. On the night of November 4, one of Darya's friends,
who had been with her until the end, informed her family that the
Sarallah patrol had arrested her. Desperate to find her, Darya's family
searched police stations, prisons, and hospitals, but to no avail. After
two agonizing weeks, they finally located her body in the morgue at the
Behesht-e Sakineh cemetery.
The morgue official, under pressure from authorities, claimed Darya was
<unidentified> and had <died in a car accident.> But her body told a
different story: bruises and wounds covered her face and body, and her
cheeks were marked with clear signs of blunt force. Her family
identified her by a birthmark on her hand. After discovering Darya's
body, her family faced intense pressure from security officials. They
were forced to state on camera that their daughter had died in a car
accident. Authorities threatened that if they refused, they too would
<face Darya's fate.>
Finally, on November 12, 2022, under heavy security, Darya Nazmdeh was
laid to rest in the village of Ghaleh Shahr.>>

Maria Ghavasieh
NCRI - Womens committee - 8 Nov 2024 - in The Fallen for Freedom
<<Maria Ghavasieh
Maria Ghavasieh was born on August 1, 2001, in Shiraz, a historic city
in southern Iran. As the only child in her family, Maria's early years
were marked by both love and profound loss. At just four years old, she
lost her father in a tragic car accident. Then, when she was twelve, her
mother passed away after a struggle with cancer. These hardships could
have broken her spirit, but Maria persevered, focusing on her studies
with resilience and determination, intent on building a future for
herself despite the many obstacles. Maria Ghavasieh was known for her
joyful, energetic personality and her hopeful outlook on life. Friends
remember her as a young woman full of life, whose strength was a source
of inspiration for others. In 2019, at just 18, she joined the
nationwide protests that erupted in November, standing up for the future
she longed for-a life of freedom and justice. Although she was arrested
during these protests, she refused to let fear silence her voice. When a
new wave of protests broke out in 2022, Maria Ghavasieh, then 21, was
among the countless young women who again took to the streets,
determined to make a difference. On November 5, 2022, during a protest
in Shiraz, the demonstration Maria was part of was violently attacked by
security forces. She was arrested and taken to Adelabad Prison in
Shiraz, where her bravery met with unimaginable cruelty. Subjected to
severe beatings, torture, and assault, Maria endured unbearable abuse.
Within two or three days, she succumbed to her injuries while in
custody, under the regime's brutal treatment. To cover up the truth,
security forces falsely claimed that Maria Ghavasieh had taken her own
life in prison. Her body was buried in an undisclosed location, leaving
her family and friends without the solace of a proper farewell.>>

NCRI - Womens committee - 8 Nov 2024 - in The Fallen for Freedom
<<Pegah Ghavasieh
Pegah Ghavasieh, a 19-year-old woman from the southern Iranian city of
Shiraz, was known for her kind nature and her deep-rooted desire for
freedom. Born and raised in Shiraz, a city rich in Persian history and
culture, Pegah dreamed of a life free from oppression. Tragically, her
young life was cut short in the nationwide protests that swept across
Iran in 2022, sparked by demands for justice and civil rights. On
November 5, 2022, Pegah joined a peaceful protest in Shiraz, as people
gathered to stand against years of injustice. During the demonstration,
she encountered brutal suppression by the security forces, who attacked
protesters to stifle their calls for change. Pegah Ghavasieh was
subjected to a savage assault, with multiple blows to her head and neck
by batons wielded by security forces. These fatal injuries ended her
life, marking her as yet another young soul lost in Iran's struggle for
freedom. Following her death, authorities refused to release her body to
her family, taking it as leverage to exert pressure on her grieving
relatives. Her family, heartbroken and devastated, found themselves
under relentless scrutiny and intimidation by the security forces, who
sought to silence any public mourning or expression of dissent.>>
