Arrests at Yalda Aghafazli memorial
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 8 Nov 2024
<<Security forces raid memorial for Yalda Aghafazli, arrest two
people
Security forces of Islamic Republic of Iran raided the
second-anniversary memorial for Yalda Aghafazli, a young artist killed
during the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement, arresting two attendees.
Those arrested include Hossein Naderbeigi, an eye injury victim during
the movement, and another individual, Majid Salahi. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, security
forces disrupted the memorial gathering in Tehran on Friday, November 8,
2024, which was attended by Aghafazli's family and other grieving
families seeking justice. The raid reportedly created an atmosphere of
fear, with security forces using physical violence during the arrests.
Witnesses report that amid the raid, both Naderbeigi, who suffered an
eye injury during previous protests, and Salahi, a family friend, were
detained and taken to an undisclosed location.
Yalda Aghafazli, a 19-year-old artist, was initially arrested by
security forces on October 27, 2022 during the "Woman, Life, Freedom"
movement. After 11 days in detention, she was released on November 6,
only to die under suspicious circumstances five days later, on November
11.>>

<<Three Baha'is Arrested At Religious Gathering in Iran
The Islamic Republic's security forces arrested three members of Iran's
Baha'i religious minority during a religious celebration in central
Isfahan. Rashid Dehghani and Pedram Dehghani from Tehran, along with
Parsa Dehghani from Karaj, were among eleven Baha'i attendees initially
detained at the gathering. While eight others have since been released,
the location of the three Dehghanis remains unknown, according to the
HRANA human rights organization. The arrests highlight the ongoing
persecution of Iran's Baha'i community which continues to face
systematic discrimination from state authorities. For decades, Baha'is
have faced systematic discrimination in Iran, as the Islamic Republic
does not recognize their faith. The government often accuses Baha'is of
being spies or opposing the regime, but the Baha'i International
Community asserts that no evidence has been provided to support these
claims. Over the past two years, the Iranian government has intensified
its crackdown on members of the Baha'i faith, imprisoning dozens of them
on spurious charges, denying them access to higher education and
livelihoods, and confiscating or destroying their properties.>>

<<Imprisoned Iranian Lawyer Rushed to Hospital After Medical Emergency
An Iranian lawyer was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday following an
apparent heart-related emergency during a family visit at Tehran's Evin
Prison.
While meeting his family, Mohammad Najafi displayed symptoms of a heart
attack. Prison authorities initially took him to the prison clinic
before transferring him to Loghman Hakim Hospital under tight security.
According to HRANA, the human rights news agency, Najafi arrived at the
hospital "under heavy restraints." Najafi, who has faced multiple
prosecutions, was briefly released in 2019 but was re-arrested four days
later on new charges. He was transferred to Evin Prison from Arak Prison
in May 2023. Najafi currently faces over 21 years in prison across
various cases involving 14 separate charges. His most severe sentence,
initially 10 years but reduced to four years and six months, was imposed
for <assisting a hostile government through interviews with foreign
media.> Since his imprisonment, authorities have filed at least five
additional cases against him.>>

<<IRGC Convoy Ambushed in Southeast Iran, Six Killed
At least six military personnel were killed when a convoy of Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces was ambushed in Sistan and
Baluchistan province. Local sources reported the attack took place on
Friday morning as the IRGC convoy was traveling from Sarbaz to the Rask
district. The convoy was ambushed by armed individuals near Firoozabad,
about five kilometers from Rask. The attack, believed to have been
carried out by the militant group Jaish al-Adl, killed at least six IRGC
members and injured several others. Government media only confirmed the
death of one soldier, but some reports suggest that four members of the
Jaish al-Adl group were also killed in the ambush. Following the attack,
IRGC forces reportedly opened fire on passing vehicles, resulting in
casualties among a family. Abdullah Izadshenas, a metalworker from
Firoozabad, along with his wife and two children, were shot and taken to
the hospital. A local spokesperson confirmed only the death of one
soldier, did not mention the family members, and labeled the attackers
as <terrorists.> Local sources reported that IRGC forces fired at
civilians present at the scene after the convoy ambush.
Jaish al-Adl is recognized as a terrorist group by both Iranian
authorities and several Western governments, including the United
States. The attack follows tensions that flared in January when Iran
launched missile strikes against Jaish al-Adl bases in Pakistan,
prompting a retaliatory military action by Pakistan targeting suspected
separatists in Iran.>>

<<Whereabouts of Kurdish man from Saqqez unknown following arrest
Milad Rashidi, a 29-year-old resident of Saqqez, has been arrested by
security forces for the past eleven days, with his whereabouts currently
unknown. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for
Human Rights, no information has been disclosed regarding Rashidi's
location or condition since his detention. Despite efforts, his family's
attempts to gather information about his status have thus far been
unsuccessful. Rashidi was arrested on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, by
agents from the Intelligence Department while on his way to work in
Saqqez. Following his arrest, security forces reportedly raided his
home, searched the premises, and confiscated some of his personal
belongings.
Hengaw has learned that Rashidi's detention is linked to a recent post
on his Instagram account concerning the Israeli military's strikes on
Iranian facilities.>>

<<UN: Turkiye should adopt policy reform to prevent violence against
women and girls
The United Nations Human Rights Committee has raised serious concerns in
its latest observations following Turkiye's second periodic report,
highlighting that Turkiye should adopt policy reform to prevent violence
against women and girls.
News Center- The United Nations Human Rights Committee considered the
second periodic report of Türkiye at its 4162nd and 4163rd meetings,
held on October 23 and October 24 2024. Concluding observations on the
second periodic report of Turkiye, the committee said, "The State party
should adopt comprehensive legal and policy reform to prevent, address
and eradicate violence against women and girls, that explicitly address
all forms of violence against women, including domestic violence and the
so-called 'honour crimes'." The committee has also raised serious
concerns about the lack of effective measures aimed to ensure the
independent functioning of the judiciary as well as to prevent the
misuse of counter-terrorism legislation against opposition politicians
and activists, journalists, lawyers and human rights defenders in the
exercise of their human rights. "The State party should include in its
next Human Rights Plan concrete and effective measures to ensure the
independent functioning of the judiciary and to prevent the misuse of
the counter-terrorism legislation." The Committee has reiterated its
concern that the legal framework in Turkiye does not offer full
protection against discrimination on all grounds covered by the
Covenant, including LGBTQ individuals, persons with disabilities and
ethnic minorities, such as the Kurdish community. The committee calls on
Turkiye to:
"adopt comprehensive legislation prohibiting discrimination, including
intersectional, direct and indirect discrimination, in both the public
and the private sectors and on all grounds prohibited under the
Covenant; ensure the effective implementation and application of the
legislation and access to effective and appropriate remedies for
victims; and amend the Law on the Human Rights and Equality Institution
of Türkiye in order to ensure it can address discrimination based on
sexual orientation and gender identity; Ensure that all acts of
discrimination, hate speech and hate crime are promptly and effectively
investigated, perpetrators are brought to justice and, if convicted,
punished with appropriate sanctions and that victims are provided with
adequate remedies." >>

<<Iran Upholds Prison Sentence on Lawyer Mohammadreza Faghihi
The Court of Appeals in Tehran has upheld a five-year prison sentence
and additional restrictions on human rights lawyer Mohammadreza Faghihi.
The preliminary court's initial ruling sentenced Faghihi to five years
in prison, a two-year travel ban, and a two-year prohibition on
practicing law or participating in political groups. The new verdict
maintained these penalties, convicting Faghihi of <assembly and
collusion to act against national security.> In addition to the prison
term, Faghihi faces a two-year ban on leaving the country, a two-year
suspension from practicing law, and a two-year prohibition on
involvement in political organizations. According to the HRANA human
rights organization, the verdict was delivered to Faghihi's legal team
on November 4, and the case has since been sent to the enforcement
branch for implementation. Faghihi's legal issues began on October 12,
2022, when security forces arrested him and two other lawyers during a
protest held by lawyers outside the Central Bar Association in Argentina
Square in Tehran. The protest aimed to highlight "violations of
protesters' rights and Article 27 of the Constitution." Faghihi was
released on bail on October 25, 2022, but has since faced additional
legal challenges.>>
