Narges Mohammadi
Iranwire - November 4, 2024
<<Narges Mohammadi Faces Potential Cancer Diagnosis
Nobel Peace Prize laureate and human rights activist Narges Mohammadi may have cancer while incarcerated in Iran's Evin Prison, according to her lawyer. Mostafa Nili, Mohammadi's lawyer, reported that recent medical tests revealed a potentially cancerous bone lesion in her lower right leg. The discovery came after extensive advocacy efforts finally secured her a hospital visit last week for a medical examination. "The MRI results indicate that this lesion may be cancerous," Nili said, adding that an urgent surgical biopsy is needed to determine whether the lesion is malignant.
Mohammadi, awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work defending women's rights and human rights in Iran, has spent more than a decade in prison. Her imprisonment, which has included 135 days in solitary confinement, is based on charges of <propaganda against the Islamic Republic.> >>

NCRI - November 4, 2024 - in Women's news
<<Systematic Human Rights Violations: Killing Political Prisoners Through Forced Illness
Psychoactive Drug Administration
Reports also indicate that political prisoners are sometimes forced to ingest suspicious drugs or receive psychoactive injections. Among the possible victims of such crimes is Yalda Aghafazli, who tragically ended her life under suspicious circumstances after her release. Fellow prisoners suggest that some of these suicides or suspicious deaths following release result from the effects of radioactive substances or psychoactive drug injections during detention.
Dress Syndrome and Other Autoimmune Diseases
One of the autoimmune conditions reportedly induced by suspicious drugs in Iran’s prisons is Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome. This severe autoimmune disorder, triggered by certain medications, causes intense inflammation and has emerged among prisoners as a tool for debilitating and even killing those opposing the Iranian regime.
Suspicious Deaths After Release
Aside from autoimmune diseases, there have been reports of suspicious deaths following prisoners’ releases. One example is the tragic case of attorney Maryam Arvin, who died under suspicious circumstances shortly after her release. Her mother disclosed that prison authorities administered an IV under the pretext of a sedative, and her death was later attributed to drug poisoning. Similarly, former political prisoner Sara Tabrizi died under suspicious circumstances, which the medical examiner attributed to <pill ingestion.> Only weeks before her death, this 20-year-old woman had endured extreme psychological pressure from security agents.
Urgent International Response Needed
Iran's clerical regime employs ruthless measures, including enforced suicides, induced illnesses, and assassinations, to weaken and eliminate political dissidents. Political prisoners are among the most vulnerable victims of these brutal practices. The international community must act swiftly to condemn and further isolate this illegitimate regime, recognizing the Iranian people's struggle for freedom and supporting political prisoners and protesters alike.>>

NO-hijab protest
France 24 - November 3, 2024 - by NEWS WIRES
<<Iran arrests female student who stripped to protest dress code
Iranian authorities on Saturday arrested a female student who staged a solo protest by stripping to her underwear in public. Reports indicate the action aimed to highlight the oppressive enforcement of Iran's dress code, which mandates women wear a headscarf and loose-fitting clothing in public. A female student on Saturday was arrested after staging a solo protest against harassment by stripping to her underwear outside her university,in Tehran, on November 2, 2024. Iranian authorities arrested a female student on Saturday after she staged a solo protest against harassment by stripping to her underwear outside her university, reports said. The woman, who has not been identified, had been harassed inside Tehran's prestigious Islamic Azad University by members of the Basij paramilitary force who ripped her headscarf and clothes, according to reports by several news outlets and social media channels outside Iran. She then took off her clothes in protest and sat outside the university dressed in just her underwear before defiantly walking in the street to the astonishment of passers-by, videos posted on social media showed. Under the dress code mandatory in Iran, women must wear a headscarf and loose-fitting clothes in public. The footage, which was first posted by Iranian student social media channel the Amir Kabir newsletter, was published by numerous Persian-language outlets, including the Hengaw rights group and Iran Wire news website, as well as Amnesty International. The footage appeared to have been shot by onlookers in a neighbouring building. Another video showed her being bundled into a car by men in plain clothes and driven off to an undisclosed location.
'Cry from the heart'
The Amir Kabir newsletter alleged she was beaten during the arrest. "Iran's authorities must immediately and unconditionally release the university student who was violently arrested after she removed her clothes in protest against abusive enforcement of compulsory veiling by security officials," Amnesty International said. The London-based rights group, which has in the past years chronicled allegations of abuse against women in Iranian prisons, added: "Pending her release, authorities must protect her from torture and other ill-treatment and ensure access to family and lawyer." It added that "allegations of beatings and sexual violence against her during arrest need independent and impartial investigations". Iran's conservative Fars news agency confirmed the incident in a report, publishing a picture with the student heavily blurred out. It said the student had worn <inappropriate clothes> in class and <stripped> after being warned by security guards to comply with the dress code. Citing <witnesses>, it said the security guards spoke <calmly> with the student and denied the reports that their action had been aggressive.

Jina Amini
Near-nationwide protests erupted in 2022 following the death in custody of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian Kurdish woman who had been arrested for an alleged breach of the dress code. The protests, which saw women break taboos by removing their headscarves and on occasion even burning them, subsided in the face of a crackdown that left 551 protesters dead and thousands arrested.
"We must not leave each other to stand alone," wrote Katayoun Riahi, an actress who backed the protests, in a post on Instagram expressing support for the student. Hossein Ronaghi, a prominent Iranian activist who was jailed during the protests, in a post on X hailed the "bravery" of the student and described her action as a "cry from the bottom of the heart against the oppression that has taken the life out of people, especially women." >>

UN Expert Highlights Alarming Violations Against Women
NCRI - Womens committee - 1 Nov 2024 - in Podcast
<<UN Expert Highlights Alarming Violations Against Women and Fundamental Freedoms
In a pivotal address to the UN General Assembly, Dr. Mai Sato, the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, delivered a grave assessment of the country's escalating rights abuses, particularly against women and minorities. In her inaugural report, Dr. Mai Sato underscored the dire implications of Iran’s intensifying use of the death penalty and the severe restrictions imposed under the controversial Chastity and Hijab Bill. She emphasized that these issues, coupled with Iran’s persistent refusal to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women, demonstrate an urgent need for reform. Sato's report stresses the right to life as a core area of concern, highlighting how an increasing number of Iranians face execution for broadly interpreted charges that defy international standards. She urged the Iranian regime to adopt an intersectional, gender-focused approach to alleviate systemic discrimination and violence. Following is the press release of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva issued on November 1, 2024.
Iran must prioritise women's rights, right to life, and improve transparency, says UN expert
NEW YORK - In her first report to the General Assembly, the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mai Sato, raised pressing concerns about the rising number of executions, transparency and access to information as inextricably linked to the right to truth, as well as the deteriorating human rights situation for women and girls. She was particularly concerned by the State’s response to the “Women, Life, freedom” movement, and the Chastity and Hijab Bill. She said that Iran remains one of the few countries that have not yet ratified the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. The Rapporteur stressed the need for a gendered perspective with an intersectional approach, highlighting the disproportionate impact on specific groups that have been subject to discrimination based on gender, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation among others. "The right to life stands as a fundamental concern, particularly given the alarming increase in executions," Sato said. In August 2024 alone, at least 93 people were executed, with nearly half in relation to drug offences. Many face death sentences for broadly defined security offences such as armed rebellion, spreading corruption on earth, and waging war against God - charges that do not meet the "most serious crimes" threshold under international law. My examination of the right to life will encompass not only the use of the death penalty but also the lethal use of force by State agencies, deaths in custody, laws that condone or excuse killings, and practices that fail to properly investigate potential unlawful deaths." Sato called on the Islamic Republic of Iran to meaningfully cooperate with her mandate as she hopes to help find ways to prevent and address human rights violations. "I stand ready to engage with Iran to assess and address human rights concerns. I view my role not as an adversary but as an independent expert whose assessment could help Iran strengthen its human rights protections. I firmly believe that meaningful progress requires cooperation from all stakeholders - the Iranian government, its people, civil society, and the international community." >>

<<Iranian Prisoner on Hunger Strike After Denied Medical Furlough
Manouchehr Bakhtiari, the imprisoned father of a protester killed during the 2019 protests, has been on a hunger strike since October 28, 2024, to protest his continued imprisonment. Mona Bakhtiari, Manouchehr's daughter, said that her father was transferred to the prison clinic due to his deteriorating condition. In a post on Instagram, Mona said that her father fainted in prison in a severely weakened state, yet "the regime refused to transfer him to a hospital and only moved him to the prison’s clinic." Sara Abbasi, Manouchehr's wife, also announced that he had not contacted her since October 27. She added that his life is at risk and called on human rights organizations and "the oppressed people of Iran" to "be the voice of Manouchehr Bakhtiari." Manouchehr Bakhtiari initiated his hunger strike after his request for medical furlough was denied.
Bakhtiari is currently imprisoned in Qazvin prison.
He was sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison and 74 lashes on charges including <gathering and colluding to commit a crime against security,> <spreading lies,> <propaganda activity against the Islamic Republic and disturbing public peace,> and <collaboration with groups opposed to the Islamic Republic.> His son, Pouya Bakhtiari, was fatally shot on November 19, 2019, on the second day of widespread protests triggered by the government's sudden decision to raise gas prices. Manouchehr Bakhtiari was initially arrested on April 29, 2021, for seeking justice for his son.>>

<<Iranian MP Acknowledges Deadly Crackdown on Kurdish Protesters
An Iranian MP has made a rare public acknowledgement of the government's lethal response to protests in Kurdish regions. Speaking at a local celebration in a Saqqez village on Friday, Mohsen Beiglari, who represents Saqqez and Baneh, said, "What was our situation as Kurds two years ago? Our gatherings were filled with mourning - there were nightly shootings, and the situation was very bad. Each one of us feared for our children, hoping they wouldn't be hit by bullets. I was very sad, and like you, I shed many tears for those we lost. I pray to God that joy and celebration always remain among us Kurds." Beiglari was referring to the 2022 nationwide protests, which began after the death in custody of Mahsa Amini.
Her death and subsequent burial in Saqqez sparked nationwide protests across Iran within a short period. Beiglari was not in office during the 2022 protests. At that time, he posted a message on his Telegram channel, calling on the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Health to ensure that the forensic organization urgently and accurately investigates Amini's death. Protesters were violently suppressed across Iran, particularly in the western Kurdish regions, during the 2022 uprising.>>

According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Keyvan Rahimi, a resident of Saqqez, was sentenced to eight months of imprisonment on charges of <propaganda against the state> by the Revolutionary Court in Saqqez, presided over by Mojtaba Ghaffari. Earlier in spring 2024, Rahimi spent two months in solitary confinement at the Sanandaj Intelligence Detention Center without access to his basic rights. Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - November 4, 2024
<<Seven Balochs arrested in Taftan county
In the latest wave of arrests targeting Balochs in Taftan County, seven individuals-identified as Ebrahim Dahmardeh, Khaled Dahmardeh, Yaqoub Dahmardeh, Rahimeh Dahmardeh, Younes Dahmardeh, Gol-Mohammad Qolijani, and Aref Qolijani-have been arrested by security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran. According to reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Friday, November 1, 2024, forces from IRGC's intelligence department raided the village of Kūh Gowhar in Taftan County. During the raid, four members of one family were arrested: Gol-Mohammad Qolijani, 41, his wife Rahimeh Dahmardeh, 31, their son Aref Qolijani, 18, and Rahimeh's brother, Younes Dahmardeh, 29. Simultaneously, three members of another family in the same village were also arrested: Yaqoub Dahmardeh and his two sons, Khaled Dahmardeh, 20, and Ebrahim Dahmardeh, 22. Hengaw reports that the arrests were carried out with significant force, as these forces created an atmosphere of intimidation and conducted thorough searches of the detainees' homes. As of this report, no specific information has been provided regarding the grounds for detention or the current location of these seven people. However, certain Telegram channels affiliated with the IRGC have claimed that these individuals were arrested for allegedly recording the location where ten military personnel were killed in Kuh Gowhar. Previously, Hengaw reported that on Saturday, October 26, 2024, two vehicles carrying military forces were attacked at the entrance to the Kuh Gowhar area in Taftan County. This incident resulted in the deaths of at least six officers and four soldiers, with several others injured.>>

Defendants from the Ekbatan case re-arrested
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - November 4, 2024
<<Four defendants from the Ekbatan case re-arrested in Tehran
Four defendants in the "Ekbatan" case, Hossein Nemati, Alireza Barmarz-Pournak, Alireza Kafaie, and Amir Mohammad Khosh Ighbal, were re-arrested after attending the final hearing of the case involving eight defendants on 2 and 3 of November. Following the hearing in Branch 13 of Tehran's Criminal Court, they were transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organiztion for Human Rights, on November 3, 2024, these four individuals, who had previously been released on bail of 5 billion tomans after over a year of temporary detention, were taken into custody again. Their re-arrest follows their last defense session on charges of <participation in premeditated murder and intentional assault,> and they have been returned to Rajai Shahr Prison. The remaining defendants in the case-Milad Armon, Mehdi Imani, Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Hosseini, and Navid Najaran-have been arrested for two years in Ghezel Hesar Prison, Karaj, with their cases still unresolved. Payam Derafshan, the lawyer for Hossein Nemati, stated on social media platform X that "the bail for Hossein Nemati and three other defendants has been revoked and converted to detention orders, and all have been transferred to Rajai Shahr Prison." He also noted that the re-arrest occurred without new charges and that the defense team remains unclear on the reasons for the bail revocation. Additionally, consultants present at the recent hearing were not involved in previous sessions, limiting case discussions with the defense team. The Ekbatan case emerged in November 2022 during the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement following the death of Basij Arman Alivardi in Tehran's Ekbatan neighborhood. Initially, 14 individuals were charged in connection with the incident, with indictments issued for eight of them. The defendants, including Hossein Nemati (arrested on December 15, 2022), Amir Mohammad Khosh Ighbal (December 7, 2022), Seyyed Mohammad Mehdi Hosseini (December 6, 2022), Mehdi Imani (November 16, 2022), Alireza Kafaie and Alireza Barmarz Pournak (November 4, 2022), and Milad Armon (November 2, 2022), were arrested by security forces. Zeinab Jalalian
NCRI - November 3, 2024
<<Political Prisoner Zeinab Jalalian Denied Medical Care and Family Visits Amid Deteriorating Health
The health condition of political prisoner Zeinab Jalalian has been reported as poor. She is denied access to medical services and family visits.
Zeinab Jalalian is serving her sentence in Yazd prison, without observance of the principle of separation of crimes. Despite suffering from gastrointestinal, kidney, and eye conditions, she has been deprived of specialized medical treatment. Furthermore, on the orders of the Ministry of Intelligence, she has been barred from family visits since September 22, 2024. Zeinab Jalalian was arrested in Kermanshah on February 26, 2008, and is currently being held in Yazd prison. However, this Kurdish woman has been illegally and violently moved between different prisons. About six months before her transfer to Yazd prison, she was suddenly and without any reason given by the security agents transferred from Khoy prison to Qarchak prison. She was then transferred to Kerman prison after a hunger strike with Covid-19 and requested to return to Khoy prison in West Azerbaijan Province, NW Iran. She was then transferred to Kermanshah prison, despite the officials of Kermanshah Women's Prison refusing to take her in initially due to her serious health condition. Zeinab Jalalian was infected with Covid-19 for a second time in Yazd Prison and has developed lung and asthma problems during her recovery due to a lack of medical care. Her physical condition and health have deteriorated due to her previous diseases, including kidney and digestive problems, oral thrush, eye pterygium, poor eyesight, tooth infection, etc. Despite her deteriorating physical condition, she was kept for a long time in a public room with people with addictions and very bad health conditions and without necessary medical care. According to Zeinab Jalalian's lawyers, based on the new Islamic Penal Law approved in 2013, her continued imprisonment is against the law and should be released.>>

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - November 2, 2024
<<Hengaw Report: Political prisoner Gholam Hossain Kalbi in critical condition, denied medical care by authorities
Gholamhossein Kalbi, an Arab political prisoner from Mahshahr, has been serving a life sentence in Shiban Prison, Ahvaz, for the past 24 years. Despite suffering from serious health issues, Kalbi has been consistently denied access to external medical care and hospital transfers. According to reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Kalbi faces multiple health challenges, including a hernia, infections in his ears and teeth, and a severe fungal infection in his toenails. However, he has not received the necessary medical treatment outside the prison. While he has been sent to the prison's infirmary multiple times, he has only been given brief examinations and basic medication, which fall far short of his need for specialized care and transfer to an external medical facility. Informed sources reveal that the Intelligence department has previously blocked requests to transfer Kalbi to a facility closer to his hometown of Mahshahr. He is currently confined in Shiban Prison’s security ward, where conditions are harsh. The ward is overcrowded, holding twice its capacity, with no designated space for exercise. Kalbi was initially arrested on January 8, 2001, in Dezful alongside Saeed Masouri on charges of association with the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran. In 2002, he was sentenced to death by the Tehran Revolutionary Court on charges of <waging war against God> (Moharebeh). This sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Following his arrest, Kalbi endured 14 months of solitary confinement in the Intelligence Department´s detention center in Ahvaz before being transferred to Evin Prison, where he was held in Wards 209 and 350. He was later moved to Mahshahr Prison, then to Karun Prison in Ahvaz. After Karun Prison was closed in February 2016, he, along with other inmates, was relocated to Shiban Prison. In a tragic turn, Kalbi's brother, the last remaining member of his immediate family, passed away from a heart attack in November 2016 while traveling to visit him in prison-a visit five years in the making. Authorities denied Kalbi furlough to attend his brother's funeral, preventing him from saying a final farewell to his last family member.>>

She was arrested upon her arrival and taken to the city's central prison. Iranian Nurses Resume Protests
NCRI - November 2, 2024
<<Iranian Nurses Resume Protests Over Harsh Working Conditions and Low Wages
Iranian nurses resumed their protest rallies in Fasa (southern Iran) and Yazd (central Iran), on Saturday, November 2, 2024, as the government refrains from addressing their demands for better wages and working conditions. Women comprise 70% of Iran's nursing workforce, a group that has faced systemic underpayment, censorship, and even intimidation.
A Tragic Catalyst for Change
In August, widespread protests erupted following the tragic death of Parvaneh Mandani, a 32-year-old nurse from Fars Province. Her collapse and subsequent death, attributed to extreme overwork, were reported in the media as a case of 'Karoshi syndrome'-a term, traditionally associated with Japan, that has now found resonance in Iran's healthcare crisis. Parvaneh's passing became a rallying cry, igniting protests that spread to more than 50 hospitals across 21 cities. Iranian nurses mobilized, demanding fair compensation and decrying mandatory overtime requirements, which often forced them to shoulder the care of up to 50 patients simultaneously.
Systemic Neglect of Nursing Tariff Law
The nurses' demands extend beyond fair working hours. They are calling for the implementation of the Nursing Services Tariff Law, enacted in 2006, which is intended to standardize compensation based on workload and performance-a law that has largely been disregarded. Additionally, nurses seek access to occupational benefits typically granted in high-risk roles, such as early retirement after 25 years, yet these entitlements remain unmet.
Resignation and Emigration Rates Surge
The lack of governmental support has pushed many nurses to a breaking point. As of last year, approximately 1,590 nurses resigned-a figure that starkly exceeds the rate of emigration among healthcare professionals. In fact, resignations are estimated to be two to three times the emigration rate. Just in one month, over 200 nurses left the country, highlighting the urgency of this crisis.
Legality of Forced Overtime Under Scrutiny
In late September, the Iranian parliamentary Health and Treatment Committee acknowledged the surge in resignations and emigration. They recognized that imposing mandatory overtime on nurses is illegal, citing a ruling from the Administrative Justice Court. Despite this acknowledgment, no substantial reforms or compensation measures have been enacted. Nevertheless, Iranian nurses remain resolute in their demands. They continue to call for a minimum income above the poverty line and a cap on overtime hours at 80 per month. Alarmingly, current overtime compensation is less than 50 cents per hour.>>

<<Banning a Woman Football Player for Bad Hijab
Iranian Footballer Suspended and Forced to Apologize for Headscarf Mishap
An Iranian woman footballer was suspended for several days after her headscarf slipped off during a last-minute goal celebration in an AFC Women's Champions League match. Zahra Ghanbari, a star forward for Bam Khatoon women's football club, scored a decisive goal that secured her team's place in the quarterfinals. Despite being uninjured and having her player card issued for the season, Ghanbari was left out of the lineup. In Iran, women footballers are required to compete with mandatory hijab, long-sleeved tops, and high socks, with hair completely covered to gain permission to participate in sports. Following the incident, Bam Khatoon F.C. issued an apology statement for <the incident during Zahra Ghanbari's goal celebration.> Ghanbari was forced to apologize which allowed her to return to the team. The Brief suspension has drawn attention to the strict dress code regulations for female athletes in Iran and sparked outrage on social media. "Zahra Ghanbari's goal celebration will stay far longer than any narrow-minded person who has taken away our right to watch her and her friends play football," one user said, referring to the ban on the broadcast of women on Iran's state TV. "I feel so sorry for Zahra Ghanbari. She loves football, scored an important goal, celebrated, and in the middle of it, her headscarf slipped off," another user said. "They made her apologize, suspended her, and even in Asia, they're not letting her play under the pretense of an injury. Why don't you let people breathe, you cruel ones? Poor girl." >>
