Pakhshan Azizi

NCRI - Womens committee - 25 July 2024 - in Statements
<<Gathering and Protest of Women Political Prisoners in Evin Prison’s Women’s Ward
Against the Death Sentence of Political Prisoner Pakhshan Azizi
On Wednesday, July 24, political prisoners in the women's ward of Evin Prison staged a protest and sit-in in the prison yard following the death sentence issued for Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner. Political prisoners in Qezelhessar also declared their support and solidarity with this rightful protest.
The brave women political prisoners in Evin chanted slogans including: "Death to the dictator", "First and last word, overthrow, overthrow", "The executioner's noose no longer affects Damavand", "We swear by the blood of our comrades, we stand until the end"...
The imprisoned women symbolically set fire to a noose in opposition to executions and chanted: "We stand until the end for the abolition of the death penalty, death to the execution government". The Women's Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran once again condemns the death sentences issued by the regime's judiciary courts, especially for women, and calls on international human rights and women's rights bodies, particularly the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran and the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, to take urgent action for the annulment of Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence and her release.

NCRI - Womens committee - 24 July 2024 - in Women's News
<<The Life of Political Prisoner Pakhshan Azizi is in Serious Danger
Death Sentence Issued to Pakhshan Azizi
Political prisoner Pakhshan Azizi, who is held in the women's ward of Evin Prison, has been sentenced to death by Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran, and this sentence was issued to her on July 23, 2024. Previously, she was convicted of Bagh-ye (armed insurgency) and, since early July, had been deprived of visits and contact with her family by order of Evin Prison authorities.
Protest by Women in Evin Prison Against the Death Sentence
On Wednesday, July 24, 2024, the female political prisoners in Evin Prison protested the death sentence of Pakhshan Azizi by staging a sit-in. The majority of female political prisoners in the women’s ward with various beliefs collectively protested in the yard of this ward against the issuance of the death sentence for Pakhshan Azizi. They announced that from 7 p.m. (Iran time) on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, they would be in the ward's yard and not return inside for the night. They chanted in unison:
Death to the dictator
Death to the execution government
From Kurdistan to Gilan, oppression against women
Women's ward of Evin, united and determined, standing until the death sentence is abolished
Resistance is life, Pakhshan is a free woman
Political Prisoner Pakhshan Azizi
Kurdish journalist Pakhshan Azizi, a former political prisoner, and Social Work graduate endured over four months of detainment in the Intelligence Ministry's Ward 209 at Evin Prison. Her relocation to the Women's Ward at Evin on Monday, December 11, 2023, marked a significant shift after enduring extensive interrogation without legal counsel or communication with her family. The transfer of the Kurdish journalist Pakhshan Azizi followed her arrest on August 4, 2023, in Shahrak-e Kharrazi, Tehran. This isn't her first encounter with authorities; she was previously arrested on November 16, 2009, during a Kurdish student protest at Tehran University, which was staged against the execution of political prisoners in Kurdistan. Her prior arrest led to her release on bail on March 19, 2010.>>

Execution Campaign Grows
Iranwire - July 23, 2024
<<Prisoner-Led Anti-Execution Campaign Grows Across Iranian Prisons
The 'No to Execution Tuesdays' campaign, a prisoner-led initiative protesting capital punishment in Iran, has entered its 26th week with growing support. The campaign has now expanded to include prisoners from Urmia, Marivan, Kamyaran, Baneh, and Salmas prisons, according to the letter received by IranWire from inmates at Ghezel Hesar prison. The expansion comes amid a sharp increase in death sentences and executions across the Islamic Republic's prisons over the past few weeks. The campaign, which began in February, aims to draw domestic and international attention to what participants describe as a <gross violation of the right to life> in Iran. In their letter, the Ghezelhesar prisoners expressed alarm over the execution of more than 10 inmates last week, including two political prisoners. They wrote <While the government cannot respond to the rightful demands of the people, it intends to create terror in society by killing and executing prisoners on various charges, in order to create a roadblock against future protests and uprisings of the oppressed people.> The campaign includes participants from various prisons, including Evin, Ghezelhesar, Karaj Central, Khorramabad, Tabriz, Khoi, Naqdeh, Mashhad, and Saqqez. Campaigners are urging both political and non-political prisoners nationwide to join their cause, aiming to elevate <No to Execution> to a national demand.
The number of executions in Iran reached 853 in 2023, which is the highest recorded since 2015 and mark a 48 per cent increase from 2022 in the aftermath of the Woman, Life, Freedom protests. The spike in death penalties has continued into 2024, with at least 95 recorded executions by March 20, according to Amnesty International.

Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 24 July 2024
<<Kurdish political prisoner, Pakhshan Azizi, sentenced to death
Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish journalist, social worker, and political prisoner currently imprisoned in Evin Prison, has been deprived of the right to phone calls and family visits. She has been sentenced to death by the Iranian Judiciary on charges of <rebellion.> According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner from Mahabad, has been sentenced to death by Branch 26 of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran, presided over by Judge Iman Afshari. She was convicted of <rebellion> on the charge of <Membership in groups that waged an armed uprising against the Islamic government, whose leaders are involved in rebellion.> Additionally, she received a four-year prison sentence on the charge of being a member of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK). Her case hearings were held on May 28 and June 16, 2024. The mentioned verdict was notified to her lawyers on Tuesday, July 22, 2024. The death sentence for Pakhshan Azizi was issued amid her prolonged deprivation of legal representation and family visits. Additionally, her case proceedings have been conducted through opaque and unjust processes. Hengaw recently published a letter from Pakhshan Azizi in which she reported being subjected to multiple instances of torture and harassment. Additionally, she has been denied the right to visit or call her family for the past two weeks. On August 4, 2023, Pakhshan Azizi was arrested by Iranian Intelligence Forces in the Kharazi town of Tehran. On December 11, 2023, she was transferred from Ward 209 of Evin Prison, which is known as the Ministry of Intelligence's detention center, to the women's ward of the same prison. Previously, Hengaw, citing politically informed sources, reported that several members of Pakhshan Azizi's family were arrested alongside her but were released after a few days. It is worth noting that Pakhshan Azizi was arrested on November 16, 2009, during a protest by Kurdish students in Tehran against the executions of prisoners in Kurdistan. She was subsequently released on March 19, 2010, after four months in detention, upon posting bail of 100 million Tomans.
Subsequently, Pakhshan Azizi left Iran due to pressure and threats from Iranian security institutions. During her research on the situation of women in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan, she engaged in social work to improve their conditions.>>

Hijab Enforcement
NCRI - Womens committee - 25 July 2024 - in Women's News
<<Mandatory Hijab Enforcement Unwavering: Activation of 23,000 Hijab Patrols
Change in Government Will Not Affect Noor Plan Implementation
In a meeting of the Provincial Security Council in Qazvin, Deputy Commander of the State Security Force (SSF), Brigadier General Qassem Rezaei, emphasized that the Noor Plan is non-negotiable and will continue regardless of changes in government. Noor Plan is the clerical regime's latest scheme to enforce the mandatory Hijab on Iranian women and it started in April 2024. Rezaei stated that the SSF is guided by the law and that addressing visible crimes is an inherent duty of the police. He highlighted the legal and religious obligations concerning chastity and hijab, noting that promoting virtue and preventing vice is a fundamental religious principle that cannot be suspended. (The state-run Mehr News Agency, July 24, 2024).
23,000 Hijab Patrols
Ahmad Vahidi, the regime’s Interior Minister, reported in the final session of the government's thirteenth cabinet that 23,000 Hijab Patrols had been mobilized to positively enforce hijab regulations. (The state-run Khabar Online, July 24, 2024) Vahidi referred to the nationwide uprising in 2022 as a <hybrid war,> acknowledging the extensive <enemy> designs. He claimed that despite these plans, security agencies successfully suppressed the uprising and prevented similar incidents in subsequent years. The Noor Plan and the activation of 23,000 hijab patrols reflect the government's extensive efforts to enforce mandatory hijab on Iranian women. The persistent implementation of the Noor Plan, irrespective of government changes, and the mobilization of hijab enforcers indicate that the new president neither intends nor is able to make any changes regarding the status of women in Iran and their right to freedom of choice.>>

<<Baha'i Farmlands Razed as War Martyr's Mother Protests
An image of an elderly village woman with a stooped figure and a cane protesting the destruction of Baha'i agricultural lands in Ahmedabad village was circulated widely in June. She is the mother of one of the Baha'i "martyrs" from the Iran-Iraq war. According to an IranWire source, 15 government agents with a large excavator attacked the Baha'i agricultural lands in Ahmadabad village in northern Mazandaran, destroying approximately six hectares of rice fields cultivated by farmers. The agents first moved back and forth with the excavator over the paddy fields, demolishing them, and then they damaged the river water passage that irrigated the fields. In the background of the published videos and pictures, the elderly woman could be seen pleading with the agents to stop the destruction. She is the mother of Farhad Zahedi, a Baha'i man killed in the Iran-Iraq war and referred to as a "martyr." Farhad attained "martyrdom" in March 1987. Last year, government agents also conducted an illegal operation in Ahmadabad, fencing off the agricultural lands of the Baha'is.
Detention of Baha'i Citizens in June
Arrests of Baha'i citizens continued in June.
The first incident involved the arrest of a Baha'i woman in Ahvaz. Thirteen officers from the Ahvaz IRGC Intelligence Organization entered the location where Sepideh Rashidi and her husband were treating animals and arrested the woman. No information was provided about the charges against her. Previously, in February, IRGC intelligence agents searched her house and confiscated personal belongings, including her computer and mobile phone. In another incident, a mother and her child were arrested in Rasht. Agents from the Rasht Intelligence Department raided the home of Nazila Khanipour and arrested her without presenting a court order. Simultaneously, officers arrested her son, Vesal Herawi, at his workplace.
Additionally, a Baha'i citizen named Agah Sadeghi has been detained for three weeks without clear charges. He was arrested in Bukan along with his wife, and after a search of their home and confiscation of personal and religious items, he was taken to an unknown location.
Appeal Courts and New Rulings
A few judicial sentences given to Baha'i citizens were altered last week. The appeal court in Golestan province slightly reduced the sentence of Nafiseh Sa'adatiar, a Baha'i woman living in Gorgan. Initially, the Revolutionary Court of Gorgan sentenced her to one year of imprisonment and four years of deprivation of social rights for propaganda against the Islamic Republic. The appeals court upheld the one-year imprisonment but reduced the deprivation of social rights to three years. Sa'adatiar and her husband, Pouya Amri, were arrested in February 2022 and released on bail after a few days. In another case, a branch of the Khorasan Razavi Court of Appeals acquitted two Baha'i citizens, Farideh Moradi and Golnoush Nasiri.
Initially, the Revolutionary Court of Mashhad sentenced them to one year and eight months in prison for charges including <membership in a group,> <social action with the intention of disrupting the security of the country,> and <propaganda against the Islamic Republic.> The court judge barred their lawyer from entering the court session. After re-examination by the Supreme Judicial Council of Tehran and subsequent review by the appeals court, both were acquitted of all charges.>>
