Narges Mohammadi
Iranwire - 16 May 2024
<<Nobel Laureate Prisoner Pens Heartache After Decade Away From Children
Narges Mohammadi, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights activist
and political prisoner in Iran, has written a letter marking the tenth
anniversary of her children's departure from the Islamic Republic. In
the message shared on her Instagram account, Mohammadi reflected on the
pain of separation and her role as a mother in the face of political
oppression. <I hope my children will know that I, like all the mother
prisoners, although branded 'defiant', was a loving mother whose heart
is still pounded by the terrible wave of longing for her children,>
Mohammadi wrote, addressing her twins, Kiana and Ali. The activist
described the anguish of being distant from her children, stating,
<Distance means not hugging, touching, seeing, or even hearing their
voices.> She expressed concern that this separation will turn her into
<a stranger> to her children and make them <unfamiliar> to her.
Mohammadi placed her personal struggle in the broader context of the
Middle East, where <war and tyranny run side by side.>
She drew parallels between her situation and that of other mothers in
the region - <those of soldiers, of children fearing bombs, and of young
people fallen to violence or executed in prisons.> In her letter, she
aligned herself with <thousands of imprisoned mothers> who resisted the
Iranian government's oppression. In January, Mohammadi was sentenced to
15 months in prison, two years of exile from Tehran, travel bans, along
with other punishments by a separate revolutionary court. In November
2021, she was arrested at a memorial and later sentenced to eight years
in prison, 74 lashes, exile, and several restrictions. The Norwegian
Nobel Committee awarded Mohammadi the 2023 Peace Prize <for her
courageous fight for freedom and human rights over three decades> in
Iran. However, her legal troubles have only continued, with additional
sentences imposed by Tehran's Revolutionary Courts in 2022 and 2023.>>

Solmaz Akbarzadeh, a law professor, has been dismissed from her position

News Center- Crackdown on academics and university students for
supporting the 'Jin, Jiyan, Azadi' uprising continues in Iran. Solmaz
Akbarzadeh, a law professor, has been dismissed from her position at
Al-Zahra University in Bushehr, the Coordination Council of Iranian
Teachers' Trade Associations announced on its Telegram channel on

message from the university's security department using the phrase
<termination of cooperation> instead of <dismissal> without giving
information about the reason for her dismissal. Since the 'Jin, Jiyan,
Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)' uprising started in Iran following the
killing of Jina Mahsa Amini in 2022 by Iran's co-called <Morality

<<Political Prisoner Elaheh Fouladi Denied Contact and Visits with
Family
Political prisoner Elaheh Fouladi, held in Evin Prison, has been
deprived of contact and visits with her family by order of the prison’s
disciplinary committee since July 6, 2024. Political prisoner Elaheh
Fouladi is suffering from heart complications and a high heart rate. The
prison conditions have aggravated her illness, making it physically
unbearable for her to remain incarcerated. Despite her acute physical
condition, the prison authorities and judiciary have kept her in prison.
Elaheh Fouladi, born in 1978 in Khalkhal, Ardabil Province, is married
with two children. She was a final-year university student when she was
arrested at the airport on January 23, 2020, along with her husband, Mr.
Sattar Babaei, and taken to Evin Prison.
After the interrogation period ended in July 2020, political prisoner
Elaheh Fouladi was released on bail. However, the Revolutionary Court of
Tehran later sentenced her to eight years in prison for “propaganda
against the state” and “assembly and collusion against national
security” due to her association with the Iranian opposition, the
People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). On December 12,
2023, Elaheh Fouladi was re-arrested and transferred to the women’s ward
of Evin Prison to serve her sentence. Her husband, Mr. Sattar Babaei,
completed a two-year sentence in Evin Prison from 2020 to 2022 on
similar charges of “assembly and collusion to act against national

<<Women Challenge Hijab Law at Ashura
Iranian authorities have summoned a group of young women after they
allegedly participated in an Ashura religious ceremony without wearing
the mandatory hijab. The Ashura ceremony, recently held in Karaj, near
Tehran, has sparked controversy after videos circulated showing several
young women participating without wearing the mandatory hijab. The
incident has led to swift action from authorities and ignited a debate
on social media.
Hamid Hodavand, the police commander of Alborz province, announced on
Wednesday that law enforcement has identified and summoned the
individuals involved in the incident. <Given the release of a video on
social media about the presence of several girls without hijab in the
Ashura day mourning and the harming of the feelings of Hosseini mourners
throughout the country, pursuing the issue was placed on the agenda of
the police officers of the province,> Hodavand said, according to ISNA
state news agency. The police commander emphasized that they <do not
condone the violation of the sacred space of the imams and will deal
with the violators according to the law.> The incident comes amid law
enforcement agencies intensifying the enforcement of hijab regulations
by implementing the Noor Plan since April 13. There have been numerous
reports of women being arrested and harassed for perceived violations of
dress codes across Iran. Users across social networks are participating
in a spontaneous campaign using the hashtag <war against women> to
document their experiences and observations regarding the government's
crackdown on the opponents of mandatory hijab. Reports have also emerged
detailing repressive tactics, especially targeting female students in
various universities. Additionally, there has been increasing pressure
on civil activists, political dissenters, women political prisoners, and
cultural figures.>>

Mustafa Tajzadeh
Iranwire - July 18, 2024
<<Political Prisoner Blames Iran's Supreme Leader for National Crises
Mustafa Tajzadeh, a prominent political prisoner in Iran, has blamed
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei for the country's challenges. On Wednesday,
Tajzadeh's Instagram account published a letter from Evin prison titled
<Why I didn't I vote but remained silent>. The letter directly
implicates Khamenei in Iran's ongoing crises. Tajzadeh said the
country's problems stem from <the policies of the leader who spread
poverty, promote corruption and obstruct [progress].> He argued that the
current challenges facing Iran are deeply rooted in the <flawed
political and legal structure of the system> overseen by Khamenei.
Tajzadeh asked, <Does the leader's view of all the country's issues
differ significantly from Jalili's view?> referring to Saeed Jalili, a
hardline conservative figure and former presidential candidate. <That's
why I say that the problem is not Jalili's, it's his godfather,> he
said, pointing to Khamenei's influence over Iran's political landscape.
Despite his harsh criticisms, Tajzadeh explains his previous silence on
these matters, saying he did not want to discourage those who saw hope.
In September 2022, the activist was sentenced to five years in prison on
charges including <collusion against national security,> <spreading
falsehoods,> and <propaganda against the Islamic Republic.> In a letter
published on his Telegram channel on February 18, Tajzadeh accused the
Supreme Leader of neglecting Iran's pressing issues and rendering the
electoral process meaningless. Khamenei, who has the last say on all
matters in Iran, has withheld <the contributions of capable individuals>
and hindered <essential structural reform,> Tajzadeh said in the
February letter. Tajzadeh has been repeatedly arrested since 2009 and
subjected to harsh sentences.>>

occurred on Wednesday evening, according to Ebrahim Khademlo, director
of the Galogah city health and treatment network. According to Khademlo,
local hospitals experienced a sudden influx of patients presenting
similar symptoms. Initial examinations revealed that all affected
individuals had consumed water or drinks from distribution points along
a specific route in the city. <All patients were treated on an
outpatient basis, receiving medication and intravenous fluids,> Khademlo
said. He added that no hospitalizations or severe cases were reported,
with all patients being discharged after treatment. City officials have
formed a council to investigate the poisoning incident. The council,
comprising representatives from the police force, the judiciary, health

on August 16 and 17, 2023, by security forces in Gilan. Some, including
Zahra Dadras and Zohreh Dadras, were released on bail in September and
October of last year. On February 29, a court session was held at Branch
3 of the Revolutionary Court of Rasht, presided over by Judge Mehdi

<<Feyzollah Shadi Arrested by Security Forces in Kamyaran
A Kurdish citizen from Kamyaran, named Feyzollah Shadi, was arrested by
the security forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran in this city and

the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Sunday, July 14, 2024,

in one of the streets of Kamyaran was sealed at the same time as his
arrest. It is said that the arrest of Feyzollah Shadi is related to the
printing of an obituary for his grandmother, Masoumeh Doroudi. This
mother, who was seeking justice, lost her child following Khomeini's
fatwa for the attack on Kurdistan in the 1980s. Feyzollah Shadi, after

Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish journalist, social worker, and political
prisoner in Evin Prison accused of <rebellion,> has been denied the
right to phone calls and in-person visits with her family. According to
the report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, it has
been two weeks since Evin Prison authorities banned Pakhshan Azizi from
making phone calls and visiting her family. According to a source close
to Azizi's family, their attempts to contact her via phone or meet with
her in prison over the past two weeks have been unsuccessful. This has
caused significant concern about her health condition. Pakhshan Azizi
has been detained for the past 347 days. Last winter, Branch 5 of the
Evin Security Prosecutor's Office accused her of <rebellion> through
<membership in opposition groups.> On December 11, 2023, this journalist
was transferred from Ward 209 of Evin Prison, known as the detention
center for the Iranian Intelligence Service, to the women's ward of Evin
Prison. On August 4, 2023, Azizi was arrested in the Kharazi town of
Tehran by the Iranian Intelligence forces. Previously, Hengaw reported,
citing informed sources, that several members of this former political
prisoner's family were also arrested along with her but were released
after a few days. It is worth noting that on November 16, 2009, during a
protest rally by Kurdish students at Tehran University against the
execution of political prisoners in Kurdistan, Pakhshan Azizi was
arrested. She was subsequently released on March 19, 2010, after posting

Confinement
Solitary Confinement and Hunger Strike
Maryam Mehrabi, a teacher imprisoned in Dolatabad Prison in Isfahan, has
gone on a hunger strike to protest the psychological pressures, poor
physical conditions, and separation from her children. She was moved to
solitary confinement some time ago and has been hospitalized in the
prison's medical facility several times.
Arrest and Transfer to Prison
Maryam Mehrabi was arrested by security forces in Isfahan on June 18,
2024. This was her second arrest in the past year; in March 2022, while
following up on her brother Mahmoud Mehrabi's case at the Mobarakeh
County Courthouse, she was detained by security forces and transferred
to Dolatabad Prison. She was released on bail three days later.
Previous Sentence
In September last year, Mehrabi was sentenced by Branch 102 of the
Criminal Court of Mubarakeh to 74 lashes and three months in prison.
However, this sentence was later converted to a monetary fine.

Iranian airport officials have confiscated actress Leyli Rashidi's
passport and electronic devices upon her return to Iran. Tezham Borumand,
Rashidi's mother, revealed in an Instagram post that her daughter's
passport, mobile phone, and laptop were seized, and her belongings were
thoroughly searched. Borumand expressed frustration with the situation,
stating, <I wish thieves and looters would be seen like this, I wish all
our enemies were as dangerous as Leyli and her ilk.> She also
sarcastically thanked the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance,
Mohammad Mehdi Esmaili, for his recent claims of supporting artists and
lifting bans on their activities. This incident follows Rashidi's public
support for the Woman, Life, Freedom movement in 2022 when she posted a
photo of herself without the mandatory hijab on Instagram. The
confiscation of Rashidi's passport is the latest in a series of actions
taken against artists who have supported protests following the death of
Mahsa Amini in custody nearly two years ago.

<<Iran Court Upholds Conviction of Three Baha'i Men
The Appeals Court in Fars Province has upheld the convictions of three
members of the Baha'i religious minority, affirming the original ruling
from a lower court. Hassan Salehi, Vahid Dana, and Saeed Abedi, now face
a prison term of six years, one month, and 17 days, alongside monetary
penalties and a 15-year restriction on certain social privileges. Branch
37 of the Fars Province Appeals Court endorsed the verdict initially
handed down by the Shiraz Revolutionary Court on October 16, 2023. The
charges against the three individuals are linked to their religious
affiliations, with the court finding them guilty of participating in <an
illegal and anti-regime sect with the intent to disrupt national
security and spreading sectarian propaganda against Islamic Sharia law>
The case of Dana and Abedi dates back to April 28, 2021, when they were
taken into custody by Intelligence Ministry officials. They were
subsequently held in Shiraz's Adelabad Prison until their release on
bail on June 1 of the same year. Baha'is have been systematically
persecuted in Iran for 45 years because of their faith and are often
accused of being spies or dissidents.
No evidence has ever been provided to back these accusations.
Over the past year, the government has intensified its crackdown on
members of the Baha'i faith, imprisoning dozens of them on spurious
charges, as well as denying them access to higher education,
livelihoods, and confiscating or destroying personal properties.>>
