Sharifeh Mohammadi
Medyanews - January 1, 2025
<<Women behind bars: Deteriorating health of Iran's political prisoners
Kurdish political prisoner Warisheh Moradi, under sentence of death in
Iran's notorious Evin Prison for <rebellion>, is being denied medical
treatment outside the facility in spite of her critical state of health.
Another political prisoner Sharifeh Mohammadi was finally transferred
for treatment on 31 December after a long period of illness. Recent
reports have exposed the appalling health conditions in Iranian women's
prisons, revealing a systemic denial of medical care to political
prisoners by the prison authorities. Kurdish political prisoner Warisheh
Moradi, sentenced to death for <rebellion", remains in critical health
in Iran's notorious Evin Prison without access to external medical
treatment, human rights activists have revealed. Moradi, a member of the
Free Women's Society of East Kurdistan (KJAR), has been suffering from
acute digestive problems exacerbated by the refusal of the prison
authorities to permit her transfer to a hospital. After nine months in
isolation, Moradi was granted a brief family visit, but local sources
told Medya News on Monday that her health continues to deteriorate due
to the lack of external medical care. Human rights advocates from the
initiative No to Execution, Yes to Free Life! have condemned the denial
of medical treatment, calling it a "deliberate tactic of oppression" and
a violation of international human rights standards. "Such actions
constitute a blatant violation of human rights and contradict Iran's
international obligations to uphold the rights of detainees," they said.
In a related case, Sharifeh Mohammadi, another political prisoner, was
transferred for external medical treatment on 31 December following
months of untreated illness. Mohammadi, whose death sentence was
recently overturned, had been suffering from a spreading toenail
infection at Lakan Prison in Rasht. Her delayed treatment highlights the
systemic neglect of prisoners' health.
Reports from Iranian prisons paint a grim picture of the deteriorating
conditions. In Lakan Prison, 160 women live without electricity,
functioning heating systems or proper sewage facilities. The lack of
heating during harsh winters has led to widespread seasonal illnesses,
including influenza. Medical care remains virtually absent, leaving
inmates to suffer without relief.
Similarly, Qarchak Varamin Prison, south of Tehran, houses over 100
women and 20 children in freezing temperatures without adequate heating
or hot water. Recent reports indicate that all the detainees in Qarchak
have fallen ill due to the lack of basic amenities. The systemic denial
of basic healthcare by prison authorities exemplifies what activists
describe as a "strategy of repression", pushing vulnerable detainees
towards physical and psychological collapse. The international community
continues to call on Iran to address these human rights violations and
fulfil its obligations under international law to protect the health and
dignity of detainees.>>

Maryam Jalal Hosseini
NCRI - January 2, 2025 - in Women's News
<<Denied Medical Care: Political Prisoner Maryam Jalal Hosseini in
Fardis Prison
Critical Health Issues Neglected
Maryam Jalal Hosseini, a political prisoner held in Fardis Prison (aka
Kachouii) in Karaj, is suffering from severe gastrointestinal and dental
problems. Despite repeated requests for medical attention over the past
year, prison authorities have consistently denied her treatment. A
source close to her family revealed that prison doctors merely prescribe
syrup for her gastrointestinal issues, which is insufficient given her
condition. Her requests for dental care have also been repeatedly
ignored.
Arrest and Sentencing
Maryam Jalal Hosseini was first arrested on May 9, 2023, during
widespread teachers’ protests in Tehran. Initially detained at the
police security headquarters, she was transferred to Qarchak Prison in
Varamin. After her release on bail on June 12, 2024, she was rearrested
and sent to Fardis Prison in Karaj. On January 3, 2024, the Karaj
Revolutionary Court sentenced her to seven years in prison, two years of
exile in Ilam, and a two-year travel ban. She was convicted on charges
including <inciting violence to disrupt national security,> <propaganda
against the regime,> and <insulting the Supreme Leader.>
Exacerbated Health Decline
Since late June 2024, authorities have intensified pressure on Maryam
Jalal Hosseini by denying her medical care. Her family was told she
could only be transferred to a hospital if they provided a substantial
bail, which they could not afford. Her health continues to deteriorate
under these conditions, raising serious concerns about her well-being.>>

Cecilia Sala
Medyanews - January 2, 2025
<<Journalists' organisations call on Iran to release Cecilia Sala
The Islamic Republic of Iran and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
have confirmed that the prominent Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was
arrested in Iran on 19 December. International press organisations are
demanding her immediate release, and an end to Iran's persistent
violations of freedom of expression and human rights. According to
published reports, Cecilia Sala, a journalist from Italian newspaper Il
Foglio, who travelled to Iran with a press visa, was arrested on 19
December by Iranian security agents. The government of Iran, in
violation of the laws of freedom of expression and human rights, has not
yet provided an explanation regarding the reasons for her arrest and
detention in solitary confinement at the notorious Evin prison. In
response to this egregious action, press freedom organisations-including
the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), Reporters Without Borders (RSF)
and the organisers of the International Journalism Festival (IJF)-asserted
on 31 December that Sala's arrest reflects a systematic suppression of
independent journalism in Iran. They underscored Iran’s willingness to
target both foreign and domestic reporters as a means to stifle critical
reporting of the regime. CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg stated that Iran has a
long and ignominious history of jailing journalists, as well as of
targeting reporters and their families at home and abroad. "Sala's
arrest is a powerful reminder of the daily threats faced by those
reporting in and about Iran, and she and all those wrongfully detained
by Iran should be released immediately," she said. RSF Director General
Thibaut Bruttin added, 'The detention of Cecilia Sala, without any
reason having been officially communicated by the Iranian authorities,
and despite the fact that the journalist had a valid visa, presents all
the characteristics of arbitrary detention. We are also gravely
concerned about her conditions of detention, as she is held in solitary
confinement in Evin prison-infamous for being the cruel place where free
voices critical of the regime are detained." On Friday 27 December,
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani issued a statement confirming
the arrest of Sala. The announcement revealed that Sala had been held in
solitary confinement for nine days prior to the public disclosure of her
detention. While the specific reasons for Sala's arrest remain
undisclosed and no formal charges have been filed, the Italian Foreign
Ministry has been actively engaged in the case. The ministry reported
that "all possible contacts" have been established with Sala, and the
Italian Ambassador to Tehran, Paola Amadei, has personally visited her
in prison to assess her detention conditions. This diplomatic
intervention underscores the gravity of the situation and Italy's
commitment to resolving the matter. Tajani has announced that Sala's
case is "complicated", but he expressed hope that he will be able to
return the 29-year-old journalist home soon. Before her arrest, Sala had
published reports on socio-political developments in Iran, including
changes in women's clothing and a reduction in fear of security
officers. Her arrest is yet another example of the repression of
journalists in Iran, and has been widely reported internationally. There
have been recent reports of the detention of two Iranians accused of
transferring sensitive technologies to the Islamic Republic of Iran by
the United States, and the arrest of a 38-year-old Iranian at the Milan
airport on similar charges. Therefore, it seems likely that the
detention of Sala may be an attempt to use her as capital to secure
their extradition. Iran is one of the world's leading jailers of
journalists. Preliminary figures from the CPJ showed that there were 16
journalists in prison in Iran as of 1 December 2024, which would make
the country the seventh largest jailer of journalists worldwide. The
arrest of Sala and her detention in the harsh conditions of Evin prison
have once again demonstrated the continued violations of human rights
and the suppression of basic freedoms in Iran.>>

<<Dentist in Tehran Arrested After Beating by Security Forces
Farzaneh Mohammadi Parsa, a dentist originally from Abadan and residing
in Tehran, was violently arrested by Iranian security forces on
Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at her home. Without presenting any
judicial warrant, the agents forcibly detained her, subjecting her to
physical assault before transferring her to an undisclosed location.
Nine days after her arrest, no information about her whereabouts or
condition has been made available. Her family’s efforts to determine her
fate have yielded no results. Farzaneh Mohammadi Parsa had previously
been detained and threatened by security forces for opposing mandatory
hijab laws and sharing posts about boycotting Iran's presidential
elections. She was released then after signing a written pledge. No
clear details about the charges against her or the reasons for her
arrest have been disclosed. She has been denied contact with her family
since her detention. Human rights organizations have expressed concern
over her safety and the lack of transparency surrounding her case.>>

Ghazal Marzban, a Christian convert imprisoned in Tehran's Evin Prison,
has been sentenced by the Iranian judiciary to six months in prison and
74 lashes for <failure to observe mandatory hijab.> The 41-year-old
woman from Lasht-e Nesha, Gilan Province, was convicted by Branch 26 of

the state> and <appearing in public without observing the hijab.>
Sources reveal that one-third of the prison sentence will be enforced,
and the remainder will be suspended under supervision for five years,
accompanied by a prohibition on using telephones. Ghazal Marzban began a
hunger strike on December 22, 2024, which lasted for a week. She was

stoning
NCRI - January 1, 2025 - in Women's news
<<Stoning Sentences for Female Inmates in Iran, Hunger-Striking
Prisoners Expose
The 49th week of Tuesdays Against Executions hunger strike was observed
in 28 prisons across Iran
On Tuesday, December 31, 2024, the final day of the Gregorian calendar
year, Iranian prisoners participating in the "Tuesdays Against
Executions" hunger strike campaign marked the 49th week of their protest
against the widespread and escalating use of the death penalty in Iran.
In their statement, the hunger-striking prisoners revealed the issuance
of stoning sentences for several female inmates in the Qarchak Prison in
Varamin. This shocking revelation adds another layer to the regime's
systematic use of brutal punishments. Over the past week, the Iranian
regime reinstated the death sentence for political prisoner Mojahed
Kourkouri, a decision previously overturned. It decreed that
amputations-part of their barbaric penal code-could now be performed
with anesthesia. This chilling directive aims to normalize cruelty under
the guise of judicial procedure. The prisoners' statement highlighted
the gravity of these injustices. Excerpts of this statement follow:
Remaining silent in the face of such atrocities is tantamount to
complicity.
In a period when calls for justice and opposition to executions echo
louder than ever, the regime has not only refused to ease its oppressive
measures but has intensified them. Recent judiciary rulings permitting
anesthesia for amputations seek to desensitize society to inhumane acts
while fostering fear and repression. Many theft defendants facing such
punishments are victims of systemic corruption, deepening class
divisions, and the astronomical embezzlements perpetrated by the regime
and its affiliates. As part of its ongoing misogynistic oppression, the
regime has sentenced several female prisoners in Qarchak to stoning
under the pretext of <illicit relationships.> At best, these medieval
sentences might be reduced to death by hanging, highlighting the
pervasive brutality of the clerical regime. We believe silence in the
face of such barbarity equates to complicity. It is imperative to resist
this savagery and inhumanity. In a country witnessing daily executions
across its prisons, the regime’s brutality has surged. Between December
21 and 30, at least 41 individuals were executed, including 23 within
just three days. Many death row inmates in various prisons have already
been transferred to solitary confinement in preparation for their
sentences to be carried out.
Mojahed Kourkouri, a political prisoner detained for over two years, has
once again had his death sentence confirmed by the Revolutionary Court
in Ahvaz after an earlier ruling was overturned. His life is now in
grave danger. Participating in this 49th week of the "Tuesdays Against
Execution" campaign were prisoners from: Evin Prison (Women’s Ward,
Wards 4 and 8), Ghezel Hesar Prison (Units 2 and 4), Central Prison of
Karaj, Greater Tehran Prison, Khorin Prison in Varamin, Arak Prison,
Khorramabad Prison, Asadabad Prison in Isfahan, Dastgerd Prison in
Isfahan, Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, Nezam Prison in Shiraz, Bam Prison,
Kahnuj Prison, Tabas Prison, Mashhad Prison, Qaemshahr Prison, Rasht

Shocking Statistics on Women's Execution
NCRI - December 31, 2024 - in Monthlies, Women's News
<<December 2024 Report: Shocking Statistics on Women's Execution in Iran
Shocking Statistics on Women's Execution in Iran; 34 Women Executed in
2024
While the death penalty has been abolished in many countries worldwide,
in Iran's theocratic dictatorship, executions are not merely a form of
punishment; they are a strategic tool for an illegitimate regime to
maintain its grip on power. Over the past four decades, executions in
Iran have targeted a wide array of individuals, including political
dissidents, ethnic minorities such as Kurds, Baluchis, Turkmens, and
Arabs, as well as followers of diverse religions. Amnesty International
reported last year that 74% of global executions in 2023 occurred in
Iran. In 2024, the number of executions in the country increased by 15%
compared to the previous year, rising from 850 in 2023 to 997 in 2024,
including the execution of eight political prisoners. The clerical
regime does not use executions to punish offenders or criminals but
rather as a means to instill fear in society and ensure its survival.
Consequently, the regime holds not only the world's highest per capita
execution rate but also the grim record of executing the highest number
of women globally.
The World's Leading Executioner of Women
Out of the 997 individuals executed in Iran in 2024, 34 were women. At
first glance, the presence of 34 women among nearly a thousand
executions may not seem particularly high. However, it is important to
consider that in no other country are even a tenth of this number of
women executed.
Moreover, given the maternal role of women, even imprisonment in other
countries is often replaced with alternative sentences to ensure that
their children are not left without caregivers. Yet, in Iran, not only
are thousands of women imprisoned, but every year, some of these women
are executed, leaving their children orphaned.
Statistical Comparison of Executions of Women in Iran
According to data compiled by the Women's Committee of the National
Council of Resistance of Iran, at least 263 women have been executed in
Iran since 2007.
From 2013 to 2020, a period of eight years, at least 120 women were
executed in the country, with an annual average of 15 executions.
However, in 2024, with 34 women executed, the number has more than
doubled this average, marking a deeply alarming increase.
Since Ebrahim Raisi took office in 2021, the number of executions,
including those of women, has steadily increased. After Raisi's death on
May 19, 2023, and the rise of Masoud Pezeshkian in August 2023, this
upward trend accelerated further. Of the 34 women executed in 2024, 23
women-nearly 68%-were executed during Pezeshkian's tenure. This number,
occurring in just five months, is 1.5 times the annual average of 15
women. During Pezeshkian's tenure, an average of 4.6 women were executed
monthly. On October 8, 2024, Pezeshkian openly defended executions. By
comparison, during Raisi's 34-month presidency, 63 women were executed,
averaging 1.85 women per month.
Issuance of Death Sentences
According to documents disclosed by the National Council of Resistance
of Iran, over 5,000 prisoners in Iran are currently on death row. While
these sentences are issued under various pretexts, their primary motive
is to preserve the clerical regime, categorizing them as political
executions.

Varisha Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi
In the past year, two Kurdish political prisoners, Pakhshan Azizi and
Varisha Moradi, were sentenced to death. A labor activist, Sharifeh
Mohammadi, was also handed a death sentence, though her ruling was later
overturned. Additionally, the regime's judiciary sentenced nine
political prisoners to death on charges of “membership in the People's
Mojahedin Organization of Iran."
The "No to Executions" Campaign
Since February 2024, political prisoners in Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj
have launched a campaign called "No to Executions Tuesdays" to protest
the rising number of executions in Iran. On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, a
group of prisoners in Qezel Hesar Prison announced the campaign: "To
make our voices heard, we will go on a hunger strike every Tuesday. We
chose Tuesday because it is often the last day of life for our fellow
inmates who are transferred to solitary confinement in the preceding
days." Through the "No to Executions Tuesdays" campaign, these prisoners
have sought to draw greater domestic and international attention to the
gross violation of the right to life and the widespread executions in
Iran. They have been on a hunger strike for 48 weeks, with 28 prisons
joining the movement. Women's wards in Evin Prison and Lakan Prison in
Rasht have played a prominent role in this campaign. Courageous women
and men prisoners chant in solidarity:
"United, determined until the death penalty is abolished. We will stand
till the end."
Global Support for the "No to Executions Tuesdays" Campaign
On December 10, International Human Rights Day, it was announced that
over 3,000 former world leaders, heads of state, ministers, ambassadors,
members of parliament from various countries, UN officials, human rights
experts, Nobel laureates, and NGOs had signed a statement calling for an
end to executions in Iran. This announcement coincided with the 46th
week of the "No to Executions Tuesdays" campaign. Additionally, 581
mayors in France expressed deep concern about the alarming increase in
executions during the tenure of Masoud Pezeshkian, a rate significantly
higher than in previous years, and called for an immediate halt to
executions in Iran.
In solidarity with the "No to Executions in Iran" campaign, the 17th
District Municipality of Paris displayed a banner featuring images of
political prisoners sentenced to death. The banner highlighted Pakhshan
Azizi and Varisha Moradi, two Kurdish political prisoners on death row,
alongside photos of nine supporters of the People's Mojahedin
Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) also facing execution. The banner called
for an end to the inhumane death sentences of these freedom fighters.
December 2024 Report: Shocking Statistics on Women's Execution in Iran
For 46 years, the Iranian regime has sustained its existence through the
systematic destruction of human rights, employing executions and
massacres as tools of repression. In contrast, the Iranian Resistance
has emphasized the abolition of the death penalty for over two decades.
Abolishing executions is a key tenet of the 10-point plan proposed by
Mrs. Maryam Rajavi. The "No to Executions" campaign, both inside and
outside Iran, is part of this broader movement: No to the daily hanging
of youths, no to the execution of women, and no to the reign of the
gallows. The international community must isolate the clerical regime
and hold its leaders accountable for 46 years of crimes against
humanity, genocide, and war crimes. The Iranian Resistance demands that
diplomatic and trade relations with the regime be conditioned upon the
cessation of executions and torture, as well as the end of impunity for
regime leaders. The regime must allow an international investigative
delegation to visit Iranian prisons and meet with prisoners,
particularly political prisoners.>>
