Narges Mohammadi, Varisha Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi
Medyanews - December 28, 2024
<<Iran's condemned political prisoners granted family visits for
mother's day
Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi, two female Kurdish political
prisoners sentenced to death and held in Iran's notorious Evin Prison,
have both been allowed one-hour visits from their families, nine months
after their previous visits. On Sunday 22 December 2024, Warisheh Moradi,
a member of the Free Women’s Society of East Kurdistan (KJAR), and
Pakhshan Azizi, another Kurdish socio-political woman activist, both
sentenced to death on charges of "rebellion", were allowed one-hour
visits from their families in Tehran's Evin Prison on the occasion of
Iran's Mother's Day. Moradi's cousin Khaled Ali Panah was interviewed
for television regarding the visit: "Nine months after Warisheh's last
meeting with her family, her relatives were finally able to see her for
an hour on Sunday 22 December," he said. He further disclosed that
Warisheh has been deprived of medical treatment despite suffering from
severe digestive issues. Regarding efforts to overturn her death
sentence, Ali Panah said: "Warisheh's family remains in constant contact
with both of her lawyers to seek a reconsideration of the charge of
<rebellion>, as Warisheh has never participated in armed conflict
against the Islamic Republic of Iran." He added that her legal team has
appealed to the Supreme Court of Iran to challenge the ruling. He noted
in another part of the interview that Azizi’s family had also had the
opportunity to visit her. Before her family visit, Moradi had managed to
send a number of short messages out from Evin prison, in which she
referred to the 35% rise in the number of executions of female prisoners
in Iran. She wrote: "The Islamic Republic of Iran is retracing the path
of the 1980s, continuing to kill prisoners and freedom fighters while
waging wars beyond its borders. History must not be allowed to repeat
itself," adding, "I have no regrets. I will fight against all forms of
oppression targeting women, from Kurdistan to Balochistan, and from Iran
to Afghanistan, until the ideals of freedom are fully realised."
Meanwhile, another female political prisoner and Nobel Peace Prize
laureate Narges Mohammadi, who has been granted a 21-day temporary
release from Evin Prison for medical treatment, met with the Speaker of
the Norwegian Parliament Massoud Garakhani, where she highlighted the
plight of the two Kurdish women. She later commented on X, formerly
Twitter: "As I speak to you, cellmates, Pakhshan Azizi and Varisheh
[sic] Moradi, are facing execution sentences, 5 of my cellmates are
suffering from serious health conditions & many are being denied access
to medical care."
Human rights activists assert that the pressure and restrictions imposed
on political prisoners are part of the strategy of the security
apparatus to force them to capitulate, and that the denial of visiting
rights, communication and medical care remain a tool of repression
against them, despite persistent domestic and international protests.
The cases of Moradi and Azizi consistently draw widespread condemnation
from human rights organisations as glaring examples of human rights
violations in Iran.>>

Gulnaz Osman
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 27, 2024 - by SORGUL ŞEXO
<<Call on Syrian women: Rise up right now not tomorrow
Gulnaz Osman of the Democratic Islamic Congress Women's Council calls on
Syrian women not to remain silent against "Political Islam". "Rise up
right now, not tomorrow, or you will lose your rights."
Til Temir (Tell Tamer)- Syria has been suffering from a crisis since
2011 and entered in a new era following the fall of the Baathist regime
on December 8, 2024. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), jihadist armed group in
Syria, has implemented its misogynist policies since it took control of
Damascus. The first action of the group was to issue rules regarding
women's outfits and looks while there are dozens of problems to be
solved in the country. NuJINHA interviewed Gulnaz Osman of the
Democratic Islamic Congress Women's Council about the new rules issued
by HTS in Syria.
'Their ideology has not changed even though they emerged with a new
face'
The history of HTS, which took control of Syria following the fall of
the Baathist regime, is full of rights violations, said Gulnaz Osman. "HTS
is actually the continuation of Al-Nusra Front, having a history full of
rights violations against women. Their ideology has not changed even
though they emerged with a new face. For instance, they say women are
unsuitable for roles within the judiciary. The decisions made by them
pose a risk to women. Syrian women have been living amid war for years
and they are the ones who are most affected by the ongoing war. Despite
everything, Syrian women keep resisting."
'A threat against women's identity'
Gulnaz Osman drew attention to the anti-democratic decisions made by HTS
and said, "Women are forced to wear hijab. Islam does not require women
to wear hijab. During the time of our Prophet, women played an active
role in all facets of life, including war, economy, trade, agriculture
and medicine. However, the patriarchal mindset deprives women of many of
their legitimate rights in the name of Islam. The current government (in
Syria) aims to erase women from public life." In the Middle Eastern
countries, women are restricted in the name of Islam, Gulnaz Osman
stressed, adding: "The same policies are implemented not only in Syria
but also in Iran and Afghanistan. Women’s freedoms are restricted by
religious regimes and forces. They claim that they protect women's
rights but they do not. They aim to shape women according to their own
ideology, not to Islam. The most appropriate solution to political Islam
is democratic Islam. Today, we spread the ideology of Democratic Islam."
'It causes fear among people of different religions'
Speaking about the current situation in Syria, she said, "Some Syrian
young people have also joined HTS. But we know very well that there are
fundamentalist groups within HTS from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan and many
other countries. This situation pose a threat to religious ethnic groups
in Syria and cause fear among people of different religions."
'Their history is full of femicide cases'
Gulnaz Osman also expressed their concerns about Syria's new government,
"Because we know their bloody history; their history is full of femicide
cases. Since we do not know the real purpose of the new government, we,
as women, must demand our rights right now, without waiting for
tomorrow. Women must take part in the drafting of the new constitution.
Syria is the home of different ethnic and religious identities such as
the Druze, Christians, Muslims and Alawites. They claim that they will
found an Islamic state, but we know very well that they aim to found a
fundamentalist state. We call on Syrian women not to remain silent and
rise up right now, not tomorrow, or you will lose your rights." >>

Mojahed Korkor
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - December 29, 2024
<<Ahvaz court reinstates death penalty for political prisoner Mojahed
Korkor
Mojahed Korkor, a political detainee implicated in the case of Kian
Pirfalak, has once again been sentenced to death by the judiciary of the
Islamic Republic of Iran. He is among the detainees arrested during the
"Woman, Life, Freedom" movement and has been imprisoned for two years
and ten days. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization
for Human Rights, Mojahed Korkor, currently held in Sheiban Prison in
Ahvaz, has had his death sentence reinstated during the third year of
his imprisonment. This ruling was upheld by Branch 3 of the Ahvaz
Revolutionary Court following a parallel review process. Negar Korkor,
Mojahed's sister, shared on her personal Instagram page: "Based on the
latest information, we have learned that a new death sentence has been
issued for Mojahed." In April 2023, the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court
initially sentenced Korkor to death on charges of <Waging war against
God> (Moharebeh) and <corruption on earth.> This verdict was confirmed
by Branch 39 of Iran's Supreme Court and formally communicated to his
family on Sunday, December 24, 2023. However, in December 2024, the
Supreme Court overturned this verdict and referred the case to a
parallel court for reconsideration.
Kian Pirfalak
Previously, judicial authorities and state media attributed the murder
of Kian Pirfalak to Mojahed Korkor. However, during Kian's funeral, his
mother, Mahmonir Molaei-Rad, publicly stated that <security forces> had
opened fire on their car, resulting in her son's death and severe
injuries to his father. She later asserted, "As Kian's mother, I will
never accept the accusation against any of my fellow townspeople."
Additionally, in relation to the protests on November 16, 2022, in Izeh,
Iranian judiciary blamed the deaths of seven individuals on several
local residents, including Abbas Korkor, Bahman Bahmani, Hossein Saeedi,
and Mahmoud Ahmadi. In December 2022, the Izeh public and revolutionary
prosecutor announced that judicial cases had been filed against 70
protesters connected to the demonstrations. Mojahed Korkor, currently
detained in Sheiban Prison, has been subjected to torture aimed at
extracting forced confessions. He has also been denied basic rights,
including in-person visits with his family. On Tuesday, December 20,
2022, Korkor was injured and arrested during an armed attack by IRGC
forces in the village of Porsurakh, near Izeh. During the same attack,
two other protesters, Mahmoud Ahmadi and Hossein Saeedi, were fatally
shot by IRGC forces.>>

NCRI - December 29, 2024 - in Women's News - in Solidarity
<<Asal Rezapour: We Will Not Rest Until Democracy Is Restored in Iran
On November 20, 2024, the European Parliament welcomed Mrs. Maryam
Rajavi, the NCRI's President-elect, to speak on the process of regime
change and transition of power to the people of Iran. Among dozens of
meetings at the European Parliament, Mrs. Rajavi had a meeting with a
group of women's rights activists on the eve of the International Day
for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Ms. Asal Rezapour was
among the speakers who addressed this meeting.
Following are the remarks by Ms. Asal Rezapour.
"Dear Madam Rajavi, dear, Madam Tomasic and dear distinguished guests.
We have all witnessed the uprisings in November 2019 and September of
2022, where young women led the protests on the streets in Iran. Many of
the martyrs from these uprisings were young women and girls, and it was
a time when women were united, and when they took the struggle for their
rights, and their freedom into their own hands. These struggles were
neither coincidental nor spontaneous. Behind all this courage, stands a
long line of fighting women who never submitted to the ideologies of the
two dictatorships, neither the Shah nor the Mullahs. The struggle for
freedom and equality started 120 years ago, including the 44 years of
resistance against the misogynistic clerical regime. From all kinds of
backgrounds, they have entered this fight to gain their fundamental
rights. Tens and thousands of them were mainly supporters of the PMOI
across the country, and many were arrested and subjected to brutal
torture and rape and were even executed. This fight is also intertwined
with the nationwide struggle to overthrow the religious dictatorship.
And I think that we can all agree that without democracy and freedom in
Iran, with the misogynistic clerics, women's rights will never be
recognized. During the uprisings, many times the regime tried to derail
the uprisings by promoting false slogans. However, the Iranian women
countered this plot with slogans, "whether with the veil or without,
onward to the revolution," standing firm against the regime schemes.
Like many of us, they were inspired by Madam Rajavi, who has long
emphasized, "No to the compulsory religion, no to compulsory government,
and no to the compulsory hijab." Another scheme of the regime, is the
promotion of fake alternatives, exploiting events of unclear origin to
transform decades of women’s struggle into a battle over the hijab or
without the hijab, creating divisions among women, weakening the
movement, and diverting the path to render it ineffective.
Asal Rezapour: We Will Not Rest Until Democracy Is Restored in Iran
Fortunately, however, Iranian women have recognized the symbols of
resistance: pioneers such as Fatemeh Amini, Ashraf (Rajavi), and Saba
Haftbaradaran, all of whom declared, "We will stand until the end."
Particularly, our courageous sisters in the Resistance Units within the
country and role models such as thousands of PMOI members in Ashraf 3. I
want to emphasize that I personally, and like many other girls, have
chosen to be a part of this movement that is seeking freedom for women,
to be part of a movement that has roots within Iranian history. Together
with my sisters and the Resistance Units, I would like to declare that
we, the daughters and the women of Iran, with the slogan, "Women
resistance, freedom," will not rest until the misogynistic regime is
overthrown and freedom and democracy is installed in our homeland.">>

Cecilia Sala
Medyanews - December 28, 2024
<<Iran imprisons Italian journalist with no explanation
Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been held incommunicado in Tehran's
Evin prison, Iran, since 19 December. The Iranian authorities have not
given any grounds for her detention. The Italian journalist Cecilia Sala
has been detained in Iran since 19 December, according to a press
release from the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International
Cooperation. Although the reason for her detention is still unclear,
Sala has received a visit from the representative of the Italian embassy
in Iran and has had two telephone calls with her family. A communique
from Chora Medya, a platform for which the journalist works, announced
on Friday that Sala is being held in an isolation cell in Tehran's
notorious Evin prison. It said that she had left Rome on 12 December for
Iran and had been expected to return on 19 December, but that
communication with her was lost on that day. "She has spoken with her
family twice and has been visited by the Italian ambassador to Iran,"
said Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani. He said that Sala was in
good health. The Italian National Council of Journalists has expressed
its solidarity and closeness to Sala and her family. Cecilia Sala is the
author of the podcast 'Stories', known for giving people a voice on
current affairs. While in Iran, Sala released two episodes of her
'Stories' series, featuring two Iranian women. The first was Zeinab
Musavi, Iran’s most famous online comedian, who is out on bail being
tried by the Iranian authorities for a joke she made in an online show,
and who was herself held in an isolation cell when she was originally
arrested in 2022. The second episode featured 'Diba', a young Iranian
woman who has spoken out publicly about the suppression of women's
rights in Iran, and also took part in the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Woman,
Life Freedom)" protests in 2022. Both these women debated the issue of
patriarchy in Iran with Sala. Cecilia Sala's arrest follows the arrest
of another Italian journalist, Alessia Piperno, in 2022. Piperno was
detained by the Iranian authorities in Evin prison for over 40 days. Her
arrest, never justified by Iran, took place at the time of the Jin,
Jiyan, Azadi protests, which spread across Iran following the death of
the young Kurdish woman Jina Amini at the hands of the Iranian morality
police. Evin Prison in Tehran is the place of detention for many Iranian
women nationals accused of crimes against the Iranian regime, such as
the Kurdish political prisoners Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi.
Moradi and Azizi, who are both currently under sentence of death, are a
symbol of women's resistance in Iran and various international campaigns
have expressed solidarity with both of them. Another Iranian woman, the
student Ahoo Deryaei, was detained on 2 November and kept at an unknown
location for several weeks, after being abducted by security forces when
she protested against harassment from Iran's paramilitary Basij militia
by stripping down to her underwear while at university. An Iranian
judiciary spokesperson said on 21 November that she had been released
into the care of her family.>>

Fatemeh Ziaii
NCRI - December 27, 2024 - in Women's News
<<Political Prisoner Fatemeh Ziaii Denied Medical Care Despite MS and
Severe Lung Infection
Fatemeh Ziaii, a political prisoner suffering from multiple sclerosis
(MS) and a lung infection resembling tuberculosis, remains deprived of
access to essential medical treatment. Despite her deteriorating
condition, she has been denied both release and medical furlough.
Fatemeh Ziaii's MS treatment has been postponed due to her advanced lung
infection, exacerbating her fragile health. She is largely unable to
walk and faces severe respiratory difficulties caused by the infection.
Physicians at Evin Prison have recommended that she receive treatment
outside the prison, but judicial authorities refuse to grant her
release. Recent tests have confirmed that Fatemeh Ziaii is battling a
severe lung infection akin to tuberculosis. Her condition makes it
impossible for her to endure the harsh prison environment. She urgently
requires specialized medical care and suitable facilities outside the
prison. Born in 1957, Fatemeh Ziaii is married and the mother of two
children. She was first imprisoned from 1981 to 1986 for supporting the
People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). In January 2009, she
was arrested for visiting her children at the PMOI headquarters and
released a year later in December 2009 after serving her sentence. In
subsequent years, Ms. Ziaii faced repeated arrests and imprisonment in
2013, 2015, and 2019 on similar charges. Most recently, on September 10,
2022, she was sentenced to six and a half years in prison for <assembly
and collusion> and <connection with the PMOI.> She was transferred to
the women’s ward of Evin Prison. Due to her critical health condition,
Ms. Ziaii was granted medical furlough in September 2023 to undergo
treatment for MS. However, she was abruptly re-arrested and returned to
prison before completing her treatment, leaving her health regimen
disrupted.
Denying prisoners access to medical care is a recognized form of torture
and inhumane treatment, condemned in numerous human rights documents as
a violation of human dignity. Fatemeh Ziaii’s continued suffering
highlights the ongoing disregard for basic human rights within Iran's
judicial and prison systems.>>
