Varisheh Moradi
Iranwire - December 13, 2024
<<Political Prisoner Varisheh Moradi Denied Life-Saving Medical
Treatment
Varisheh Moradi, a political prisoner held in the women's ward of Evin
Prison, is experiencing severe and potentially life-threatening health
complications, with prison authorities consistently denying her
necessary medical treatment. Sources close to Moradi's family report
that she is suffering from intestinal bleeding and intense abdominal
pain. Despite her critical medical condition, prison officials have
refused to transfer her to a medical facility outside the prison. The
only reported visit to a medical center resulted in her immediate return
to prison without receiving adequate treatment. A Revolutionary Court in
Iran sentenced Moradi to death last month on charges of <armed
rebellion.> The court cited her alleged affiliation with the Free Life
Party of Kurdistan (PJAK) as grounds for the sentence. Throughout the
proceedings, Moradi's legal team faced extensive restrictions. Her
lawyers were denied access to her case file during the final hearing on
October 6, as well as in previous sessions. Moradi herself was not
allowed to present a defense in court. Moradi's legal troubles began on
August 1, 2023, when intelligence security forces abducted her while she
was traveling from Marivan to Sanandaj. According to the Hengaw human
rights organization, Moradi endured severe torture at the Sanandaj
Intelligence Department's detention center, including an incident where
she reportedly vomited blood and lost consciousness. After spending five
months in solitary confinement in Evin Prison's Ward 209, controlled by
the Ministry of Intelligence, Moradi was transferred to the women's ward
in December 2023.>>

Pakhshan Azizi
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - December 12, 2024
<<Campaign to revoke Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence gains momentum
More than 300 activists advocating for women’s rights, workers,
teachers, and retirees in Iran have launched a campaign urging the
immediate revocation of Pakhshan Azizi's death sentence. Azizi, a
Kurdish political prisoner, was sentenced to death by the judiciary of
Islamic Republic of Iran earlier this year. According to reports
received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, activists from
diverse social and professional sectors have signed a petition calling
for Azizi's death sentence to be overturned. The petition asserts that
she was "arrested and sentenced to death on charges of rebellion (baghi)
solely for her voluntary and humanitarian activities among the refugees
of the ISIS war." The signatories criticized the rapid judicial process
in Azizi's case, as highlighted by her legal defense team, and warned of
the urgent risk of her execution. In their appeal, they wrote: "We, the
undersigned, demand the immediate revocation of Pakhshan Azizi's death
sentence and urge everyone to unite in saving her life."
Azizi, detained in Evin Prison for over 155 days, has been denied family
visits and legal counsel throughout her imprisonment. Until late
October, she was also deprived of the right to phone calls. Her lawyers,
Amir Raeesian and Maziar Tatari, recently expressed cautious optimism
about the possibility of overturning the rebellion charge and avoiding
the death penalty. However, they warned against hasty judicial
proceedings that might ignore critical evidence submitted to the Supreme
Court. Azizi's death sentence, handed down on Wednesday, August 14,
2024, on charges of rebellion, was followed by an additional six-month
prison sentence for <prison riots> stemming from a case in Branch 3 of
Evin Prison's Prosecutor's Office. Arrested on August 4, 2023, in
Tehran’s Kharazi Township by Ministry of Intelligence forces, Azizi was
held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison before being transferred to the women's
ward on December 11, 2023. Azizi's activism dates back to her arrest on
November 16, 2009, during a Kurdish student protest at the University of
Tehran against the execution of Kurdish political prisoners. Released on
bail after four months of detention, she later left Iran due to ongoing
threats and pressure from security agencies. While abroad, Azizi
conducted research on women's rights in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and
Rojava (Syrian Kurdistan) and worked on improving conditions for
vulnerable populations through social initiatives.>>

Mosad Sab
Iranwire - December 13, 2024
<<Kurdish Kolbar Dies After Being Shot by Iranian Border Forces
A young Kurdish kolbar who was shot by government forces in the Nowsud
border area succumbed to his injuries on Friday. Mosab Sabzevari, a
resident of Qeshlaq village, was shot early Wednesday morning by border
guards. He sustained severe injuries from direct gunfire and was rushed
to Taleghani Hospital in Kermanshah for emergency treatment. Kolbars are
porters who carry goods on their backs across long distances along
Iran's borders, primarily in the impoverished, mountainous Kurdish areas
adjacent to Iraq. According to the Kolbar News website, a total of 85
kolbars died while transporting goods in the western provinces of West
Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and Kermanshah between March and September 2023.
The causes of death include direct gunfire from military forces,
blizzards, extreme cold, and falls from mountains and cliffs.>>

Armita Pavir
Iranwire - December 13, 2024
<<Iranian Student Activist Armita Pavir Released After 15 Months in
Detention
Armita Pavir, a molecular biology student from Azerbaijan Shahid Madani
University and a student rights activist, was released from Tabriz
Prison on Thursday after serving 15 months in detention. Arrested by
security forces in September 2023, the Azarshahr Revolutionary Court
sentenced Pavir to seven months and 16 days for <insulting the Supreme
Leader> and an additional 15 months for <propaganda against the Islamic
Republic.> Her lawyer, Qasem Baedi, announced her release on Instagram,
praising her dignity and resistance during her imprisonment. On November
6, 2023, Pavir initiated a hunger strike to protest prison conditions,
which led to her hospitalization due to deteriorating health. Throughout
her detention, human rights organizations voiced concerns about her
well-being and held judiciary and prison authorities accountable for
potential harm to prisoners.
Pavir, 30, a final-year student, has faced significant educational
disruptions due to her student activism, including suspensions and a
university ban.
She was first detained on October 31, 2022.
On November 9, 2023, the country's student union councils reported that
although it was announced she had been transferred to Tabriz prison,
authorities initially denied her presence when her family and relatives
visited. Later, it was revealed that prison authorities had falsely
conveyed this information to the families of several women arrested
during nationwide protests in Tabriz, likely as an intimidation tactic.
Pavir was eventually released from Tabriz prison on December 8 on bail.
In February, she was contacted to sign a commitment letter as part of a
broader "amnesty" offered to detained protesters by Supreme Leader Ali
Khamenei. However, her ordeal took another disturbing turn when she was
arrested again under the pretext of an unresolved financial case.>>

<<Lawyer Requests Medical Leave for Ailing Political Prisoner Abbas
Vahidian
The lawyer of Abbas Vahidian Shahrudi, a writer and political prisoner,
has requested medical leave and a delay of his sentence due to his
client's critical health condition. Ali Sharifzadeh Ardakani, Vahidian's
lawyer, said that the request was made based on Vahidian's psoriasis,
respiratory issues, and a recommendation from the Forensic Medicine
Organization. During a recent prison visit, the severity of Vahidian’s
health issues was reportedly evident. Vahidian, a writer and religious
scholar, was one of 14 political and civil activists who called for the
resignation of Ali Khamenei in 2018. He is currently in poor physical
condition while incarcerated. He has been repeatedly arrested and
imprisoned for political and human rights activities. The prisoner
suffers from multiple health issues, including heart and lung problems,
asthma, high blood pressure, and psoriasis. Despite the Forensic
Medicine Organization confirming the need for medical treatment and
recommending that he avoid stressful environments, Vahidian's previous
requests for medical leave and treatment have been denied.>>

Thousands of Medical Workers Emigrate
Iranwire - December 13, 2024
<<Iran's Healthcare Crisis Deepens as Thousands of Medical Workers
Emigrate
In less than two years, 11,500 members of Iran’s healthcare workforce
have emigrated, exacerbating the country's already strained medical
system.
According to Iran Newspaper, 4,500 healthcare professionals began
leaving over the past eight months, following 7,000 who started
emigration processes in 2023. The Iranian Medical Council has confirmed
these alarming numbers. According to a report by Iran Newspaper, "In
just the first eight months of this year alone, another 4,500 healthcare
workers have taken steps to emigrate. In 2023, 7,000 doctors, nurses,
and other healthcare professionals also started emigration procedures."
The newspaper described the wave of emigration as a harsh reality,
warning that "if swift action is not taken to address it, the country
will witness the decline of the medical community and its harmful
consequences nationwide."
The report also identifies Germany, Italy, Canada, and several Persian
Gulf nations, including Oman, the UAE, and Qatar, as the primary
destinations for Iranian healthcare workers. According to the report,
these countries "offer more favorable conditions for employment and
education. Among them, the Persian Gulf countries, due to their need for
healthcare personnel and the provision of special facilities, offer
easier admission for Iranian doctors and nurses, while European nations
have specialized programs to attract skilled professionals." In recent
months, nurses and healthcare workers from hospitals across Iran have
repeatedly staged protests and strikes at their workplaces, voicing
their dissatisfaction with poor working conditions, low wages, and a
declining quality of life. Ali Jafarian, head of the Ministry of
Health's Committee for Cabinet Member Selection, has previously sounded
the alarm over the mass exodus of healthcare professionals from the
country. In a recent statement, Jafarian described the situation of
nurses migrating or leaving their jobs as "terrible" and highlighted the
increasing wave of nurses emigrating to Germany. "One by one, nurses are
learning German so that they can leave the country," Jafarian said,
adding that a German language certificate is often all that is needed to
facilitate their departure. The brain drain is taking a heavy toll on
Iran's healthcare system, with newly built hospitals in Tehran unable to
open due to critical staff shortages. For years, nurses in Iran have
expressed frustration over overwhelming workloads, inadequate
compensation, and a lack of employment opportunities. However, their
demands have largely gone unmet. The government's misallocation of
resources, coupled with its recent focus on deploying officers to
enforce the mandatory headscarf law, has created a system that
undervalues nurses' essential role, further fueling their mass
migration.>>

Shir-Ahmad Shirani
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - December 13, 2024
<<Iran's failed assassination attempt on Haalvsh News Outlet editor
An assassination attempt on Shir-Ahmad Shirani, the editor-in-chief of
the Haalvsh news outlet, by two individuals linked to the Islamic
Republic of Iran's security agencies, has been thwarted. This incident
highlights the state’s intensifying strategy of targeting and silencing
activists living abroad through intimidation and assassination. Haalvsh
is a media platform dedicated to reporting on issues and developments in
Balochistan. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization
for Human Rights, on the evening of Monday, December 9, 2024, two armed
men attempted to enter Shirani's home under false pretenses. Their
efforts were foiled by the swift actions of family members and
neighbors. The Haalvsh news outlet reported that the intruders initially
claimed to have legitimate reasons for seeking access to the residence.
However, their evasive behavior and insistence raised suspicions,
leading the residents to act quickly and secure the home. Haalvsh
further highlighted that threats against its staff-particularly Shir-Ahmad
Shirani and Mohammad Saber Malek-Reyssi, the outlet's founders-have
surged in recent months. This escalation follows the outlet's extensive
coverage of human rights violations in Baluchistan, including the Bloody
Friday incident. Over recent years, dozens of political, religious, and
civil activists from the Baloch community in Pakistan and Afghanistan
have been assassinated or targeted by agents of the Iranian government.
This attempted assassination represents a continuation of the state's
systematic campaign to silence dissent and intimidate human rights
defenders. Hengaw Organization for Human Rights strongly condamne this
act of terrorism and warns against the Islamic Republic of Iran's
growing wave of extrajudicial killings targeting opposition figures.
Hengaw expresses solidarity with Haalvsh’s staff and other human rights
activists while urging international bodies to take urgent measures to
protect the lives of those advocating for democracy and human rights in
Iran. Hengaw emphasizes that the international community must hold the
Islamic Republic of Iran accountable for its actions and prioritize
safeguarding the safety of activists facing life-threatening risks for
their work in promoting democracy and defending human rights in Iran.>>

<<Diako Azizi, Kurdish man from Oshnovieh arrested to serve 18-month
prison sentence
Diako Azizi, a Kurdish man from Oshnavieh, has been arrested and
transferred to Oshnavieh Central Prison to serve an 18-month sentence
following his conviction for <affiliation and collaboration with the
Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan.> According to a report received
by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, on Wednesday, December 11,
2024, 36-year-old Diako Azizi was summoned by the Execution of Sentences
Office in Oshnavieh. Upon appearing, he was taken into custody and sent
to Oshnavieh Central Prison. In November, Branch 101 of the Oshnavieh
Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Ansari, sentenced Azizi to 18
months in prison. His arrest occurred on Wednesday, September 4, 2024,
during a wave of mass detentions targeting Kurds ahead of the second
anniversary of Jina Amini's state-sanctioned killing. Azizi, a resident
of Bab Khaldabad village in Oshnavieh, was violently arrested during the
crackdown and detained at the IRGC Intelligence Detention Center in
Urmia. During his time there, he endured severe torture and was denied
access to legal representation and family visits. He was temporarily
released three weeks later on bail of 1.2 billion tomans, pending legal
proceedings.>>

<<Unannounced Power Outages Resume in Iran, Disrupting Daily Life
Unannounced two-hour residential power outages have resumed in Iran as
part of efforts to manage fuel supplies for power plants. The blackouts,
which were previously halted on November 26, have returned unexpectedly.
Unlike the earlier period between November 11 and 26, when a schedule
was shared with residents, this round of outages has been implemented
without prior notice from the Ministry of Energy. Residents in parts of
Tehran reported power cuts on Wednesday and Thursday, experiencing
significant disruptions, including interrupted water supply to
residential buildings and mobile phone service failures. Minister of
Energy Abbas Aliabadi acknowledged ongoing energy supply challenges last
month. "We have endured challenging times due to energy imbalances, and
difficult conditions lie ahead," Aliabadi said, addressing the nation’s
power supply issues. The minister stated that the Ministry of Oil will
soon resolve the fuel supply problems affecting power plants. He also
emphasized that the Ministry of Energy is fully prepared to meet the
country's electricity demands and will implement comprehensive strategic
transformations in power generation.>>

Kian Pirfalak
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - December 12, 2024
<<Death sentence of Mojahed Korkor overturned by Iran's Supreme Court
The death sentence of Mojahed Korkor, a Lor Bakhtiari political prisoner
implicated in the Kian Pirfalak case and arrested during the Women,
Life, Freedom movement, has been overturned by Iran's Supreme Court,
marking a significant development in his legal battle. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the Supreme
Court recently annulled the death sentence handed down to Mojahed Korkor,
who is currently detained in Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz. The case has been
referred to an equivalent court for retrial. This development was
confirmed by Korkor's sister, Negar Korkor, in a statement shared on her
Instagram account. Mojahed Korkor had been sentenced to death by the
Ahvaz Revolutionary Court on charges of <waging war against God> (Moharebeh)
and <corruption on earth> (Efsad-e Fil Arz). His sentence, initially
upheld by Branch 39 of the Supreme Court on December 24, 2023, was
formally communicated to his family. The Supreme Court's decision to
overturn the ruling follows a request for retrial filed by Korkor's
legal team under Article 477 of Iran's criminal procedure code, which
permits judicial review in cases of significant procedural errors.
Korkor was accused by authorities of involvement in the killing of Kian
Pirfalak, a claim refuted by Kian's mother, Mahmonir Molai Rad, during
her son's funeral. She publicly held security forces responsible for the
attack on their vehicle, stating that she "would never accept any of
fellow townspeople as the accused." The Izeh public prosecutor had
previously accused local residents, including Korkor Bahman Bahmani,
Hossain Saeedi, and Mahmood Ahmadi, of involvement in the deaths of
seven people during the November 16, 2022 protests. Judicial cases were
opened against 70 individuals in connection with these events. Korkor,
who was injured and arrested during an armed raid by Islamic
Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) forces on December 20, 2022, in the
village of Persurakh, has been subjected to torture aimed at extracting
forced confessions. He has also been denied basic rights such as family
visits. The same raid resulted in the deaths of two other protestors,
Mahmood Ahmadi and Hossein Saeedi, by IRGC gunfire.>>

Parastoo Ahmadi
Iranwire - December 12, 2024
<<Iranian Singer Faces Legal Action for Defiant Online 'Concert'
The Judiciary of the Islamic Republic has announced legal proceedings
against Parastoo Ahmadi and others involved in producing an online
musical performance. Ahmadi, a singer, held a virtual concert on her
YouTube channel on Wednesday, featuring a small group of musicians
playing instruments as she sang. Ahmadi wrote: "I am Parastoo, a girl
who wants to sing for the people I like. This is a right I could not
ignore - singing for the land I passionately love. Here, in this part of
our dear Iran, where history and our legends intertwine, listen to my
voice." Iranians on social media have praised Ahmadi for her defiance,
as singing is forbidden for women under the Islamic Republic's law. "I'm
proud of her," one user wrote on X. "Parastoo Ahmadi held a concert in
Iran without a hijab. Her courage and this act will be remembered in
history." Another user shared: "I watched this video and cried with all
my heart. For 45 years, women have been fighting despite gender
apartheid in Iran, struggling for their most basic rights. For 45 years,
a woman's voice, body, and existence have been banned in Iran."
According to the Mizan news agency, the Judiciary declared the
performance <illegal, lacking legal permits, and not adhering to the
country's legal and cultural standards.> A legal case has been opened
against Ahmadi and those involved in the concert's production.>>

Abdullah Maroufi, a kolbar from Piranshahr, was critically injured by
direct gunfire from Iranian Border Guards while transporting goods in
the mountainous border region of Piranshahr. According to a report
received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, the evening of
Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Border Guards opened fire on several
Kolbars in the 'Seh Choman' border heights of Piranshahr. As a result,
Abdullah Maroufi, a resident of the village of 'Gazgaska' in the
Piranshahr district, was critically injured. Border Guards opened fire
without prior warning, using Kalashnikov rifles. Maroufi was struck by
three bullets in the abdomen, leg, and hand. After being shot, he was

<<Kurdish political prisoner Rezgar Beigzadeh Babamiri faces continued
detention and uncertainty on security charges
Rezgar Beigzadeh Babamiri, a Kurdish political prisoner from Bukan, has
been detained in Urmia Central Prison for over 600 days without
resolution, facing serious security-related charges that could lead to
severe sentencing. According to a report received by the Hengaw
Organization for Human Rights, 41-year-old Beigzadeh Babamiri has been
held for one year, seven months, and 24 days, with his case remaining
unresolved. Sources close to the case revealed that Beigzadeh Babamiri
has defended himself by stating that his actions during the 2022
protests were limited to providing medical assistance to injured
individuals. Despite this, he has been charged with serious offenses,
including <smuggling Starlink devices> and <complicity in the
premeditated murder> of a person named Mohammad Ali Mohammadi, as
alleged by Branch 1 of the Revolutionary Court in Urmia.
The sources emphasized that the charges against Beigzadeh Babamiri are
fabricated, and the investigation process has been fraught with
significant procedural flaws. Although he has been summoned to court
multiple times, his case remains inconclusive, leaving him in a state of
legal limbo.
It is also reported that Beigzadeh Babamiri endured more than four
months in solitary confinement at an Intelligence Detention Center in
Urmia during the initial stages of his detention. During this time, he
was subjected to severe torture, resulting in a ruptured eardrum in his
left ear and causing lasting physical and psychological harm. Rezgar
Beigzadeh Babamiri was forcibly arrested by agents of the Intelligence
Ministry on Monday, April 17, 2023, in the city of Bukan.>>

<<Iranian Activist Sentenced to Two Years for 2022 Protests
A Revolutionary Court in western Sanandaj has sentenced a man arrested
during the 2022 protests to two years in prison, with one year of the
sentence suspended for three years. The court convicted Idris Manbari of
<forming groups with the intent of disrupting national security.> The
new sentence reduces his previous 10-year sentence, which was overturned
by the Court of Appeals and sent back for review. Manbari was initially
arrested on December 18, 2022, by security forces at his home in
Sanandaj and was released on bail in February of the following year. The
latest ruling upholds the original charge but modifies the punishment.>>

<<Kowsar Dehban Zadeh: Over Two Months of Uncertainty in Shiraz
Detention Center
Kowsar Dehban Zadeh, sister of political prisoner Maysam Dehban Zadeh,
has been held in prolonged detention for more than 75 days at a Shiraz
intelligence detention facility known as Plaque 100. Her ordeal began on
September 27, 2024, when she was arrested by security forces in Shiraz
and initially placed in solitary confinement. After over a month, she
was transferred to a shared cell within the same facility, yet her
future remains unclear. Kowsar Dehban Zadeh has been accused of links to
the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). Despite being
held for over two months, whether a formal investigation or prosecution
has been initiated remains uncertain. During her detention, she has been
allowed to meet her family only twice, reportedly under circumstances
meant to pressure her into expressing regret. Weekly phone calls are
permitted, but these interactions are limited and heavily monitored.
This is not the first time Kowsar has faced scrutiny from authorities.
She has been repeatedly summoned and interrogated in the past for
advocating for her brother, who is imprisoned in Qezel Hesar Prison in
Karaj. These prior encounters underscore a broader pattern of harassment
faced by families of political prisoners in Iran. The ongoing
uncertainty surrounding Kowsar's case and her detention without due
process highlight the broader human rights abuses and lack of
accountability within Iran's judicial system. Her story underscores the
struggles faced by families of political prisoners and serves as a stark
reminder of the oppressive measures employed by the Iranian regime to
silence dissent.>>
