Narges Mohammadi
Iran Human Rights - December 5, 2024
<<Narges Mohammadi's Temporary Medical Release is Grossly Insufficient
International Community Must Campaign Vigorously to Prevent Her Return
to Prison
Permanent and Unconditional Release of Nobel Peace Laureate Is Critical
Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and renowned
Iranian human rights defender, has been granted a 21-day medical release
from Evin Prison by the Iranian authorities, after repeated denials and
delays in receiving critical medical care. This temporary release falls
drastically short of what is just and necessary-her permanent and
unconditional freedom, the Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) said
in a statement today.
"The Iranian authorities have unlawfully imprisoned Narges Mohammadi for
the same actions that earned her the Nobel Peace Prize-her tireless
advocacy for human rights," said Hadi Ghaemi, CHRI executive director.
"The international community must not allow the Iranian authorities to
return this brave woman-who has continued to be a leading voice for
human rights in Iran even while behind bars-to prison," Ghaemi said. Ms.
Mohammadi's family and legal team demanded a minimum three-month release
to allow her adequate time to recover and receive proper medical care
following a recent surgery to address a potentially cancerous bone
lesion in her right leg. A 21-day release is grossly insufficient and
inadequate given her serious condition and urgent need for comprehensive
medical attention. Ms. Mohammadi should have never been imprisoned in
the first place, and her continued imprisonment for her peaceful
advocacy of basic civil and political rights is a grave violation of her
legal rights, justice, and the fundamental human rights guaranteed to
every individual. She is serving over 30 years of unjust sentences,
based on fabricated charges directly tied to her tireless advocacy. As
the international community considers the prospect of negotiations with
the Islamic Republic, the human rights crisis in Iran must be pursued
simultaneously as a parallel and equally prioritized track. The
unacceptable plight of the many political prisoners and prisoners of
conscience in Iran, who, like Narges Mohammadi, have been unlawfully
placed behind bars for the peaceful expression of their views or
beliefs, should not be sidelined, but rather continuously pressed by the
international community, and their release should be persistently
demanded.>>

Pakhshan Azizi
Iranwire - 5 Dec 2024
<<Ongoing Denial of Family Visits for Death Row Political Prisoner
Pakhshan Azizi; Concerns Over Security Interference in Judicial Process
Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish political prisoner on death row, has been
denied in-person visitation rights for the past 150 days. Her lawyers
express doubts about the possibility of her acquittal following an
appeal due to the involvement of security agencies. According to a
report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Pakhshan
Azizi, a political prisoner from Mahabad, has been deprived of meeting
her family and lawyers in Evin Prison for the past 150 days. This basic
right was revoked during the second round of Iran’s 14th presidential
election. In addition to the complete ban on in-person visits, Azizi was
also denied phone call privileges until late October. Recently, Amir
Raeesian, Azizi's lawyer, provided an update on her case. He noted that
"concrete and verified documents from official sources" confirming
Azizi's humanitarian and social work in refugee camps for those
displaced by the ISIS war had been submitted to the Supreme Court. He
stated: "Despite the evidence presented to the Supreme Court,
preliminary reports are not promising, diminishing hopes of acquittal
from the charge of baghi (armed rebellion) and the accompanying death
sentence." Raeesian has also shared copies of official endorsements from
two humanitarian organizations in Syria confirming Azizi's social work.
He wrote, "Even though innocence and acquittal should not require proof,
we have submitted credible evidence to the Supreme Court." The two
organizations, "Shams Rehabilitation and Development Organization" in
northeast Syria and the Kurdish Red Crescent, are both officially
registered and licensed in Syria. Maziar Tataei, another of Azizi's
lawyers, expressed hope that "the Supreme Court's reviewing branch will
avoid hasty judgment and, by carefully considering the submitted
evidence, overturn the death sentence." However, he also raised concerns
about the possibility of "a rushed trial without adequate attention to
the evidence presented." Pakhshan Azizi was sentenced to death on
Wednesday, June 12, 2024, on the charge of baghi. She was later accused
of <causing unrest in prison> in a separate case opened by Branch 3 of
Evin Prosecutor's Office and sentenced to an additional six months of
imprisonment. It is worth noting that Azizi was arrested on August 4,
2023, in Tehran's Kharrazi district by agents of the Ministry of
Intelligence. She was transferred from Evin Prison's Ward 209,
controlled by the Ministry of Intelligence, to the women's ward on
December 11, 2023. Previously, on November 16, 2009, Azizi had been
detained during a Kurdish student protest at the University of Tehran
against the execution of political prisoners in Kurdistan. She was
released on bail on March 18, 2010, after four months in detention.
Following years of pressure and threats from security agencies, Azizi
left Iran. She later conducted research on the status of women in Iraqi
Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan, undertaking initiatives to improve their
conditions through social work.>>

And other actual news:
Anahita Hemmati
Iranwire - 6 Dec 2024
<<Iranian Actress Shaves Head to Protest Hijab Law
An Iranian actress has shaved her head in protest against the <Hijab and
Chastity> law and posted about her action on social media. Anahita
Hemmati described being a woman in Iran as "nothing but torment and
humiliation." Hemmati explained that she shaved her head "to prevent
others from committing a sin" because of her hair. The actress
criticized the social and cultural pressures faced by women under Iran's
strict dress codes, expressing a wish that she had been born a man. She
asked her fellow citizens to view her as "an ugly bald woman with no
place in society."
Her protest comes amid ongoing tensions surrounding Iran's enforcement
of mandatory hijab regulations, which have been a source of significant
public resistance since the 2022 protests. The <Hijab and Chastity> law,
approved after several revisions between Parliament and the Guardian
Council, comprises 74 articles and will be officially communicated to
enforcement agencies on December 13. It introduces severe financial
penalties and extensive social restrictions for women who refuse to
comply with mandatory hijab regulations. Despite the Islamic Republic's
policies criminalizing non-compliance with the mandatory hijab and the
increasingly harsh treatment of women by both official and unofficial
forces, many women continue to resist through acts of civil
disobedience. Since April 13, Iran's law enforcement agencies have
intensified the enforcement of hijab regulations under the national
action plan <Noor.> Across Iran, there have been numerous reports of
women being arrested and subjected to force for perceived violations of
dress codes. Users across social networks are participating in a
spontaneous campaign using the hashtag "war against women" to document
their experiences and observations regarding the government’s crackdown
on opponents of mandatory hijab.>>

<<10 years of prison sentences for Two Kurdish men in Naghadeh Prison
Two Kurdish individuals from Piranshahr, Salam Soltani and Amir Feqeh,
who have been arrested since spring this year and are currently
imprisoned in Naghadeh Central Prison, have each been sentenced to five
years of imprisonment by the Islamic Republic of Iran judiciary.
According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, in August 2024, Salam Soltani and Amir Feqeh (both 40 years old
and residents of Khoranj village, Piranshahr) were each sentenced to
five years of imprisonment on charges of <collaboration with the
Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan.> The sentences were issued by
Branch 102 of the Piranshahr Criminal Court, presided over by Judge Amir
Ghahramani Sa'atlu. Hengaw sources indicate that the trial for these
individuals was conducted virtually. Additionally, another case has been
opened against them in the Mahabad Revolutionary Court, while they
remain arrested in Naghadeh Central Prison. Salam Soltani was arrested
early on Monday, May 6, 2024, and Amir Feqh was arrested on Wednesday,
May 22, during security forces' raids on their homes in Khoranj village.
They were subsequently transferred to a security detention facility in
Urmia. The two individuals were held incommunicado for 20 days without
access to family contact or legal representation. They were later
transferred to Naghadeh Central Prison, where they have remained in
custody without being granted leave since their detention.>>

Manouchehr Bakhtiari
Iranwire - 6 Dec 2024
<<Political Prisoner Manouchehr Bakhtiari Suffers Heart Attack in Iran
Manouchehr Bakhtiari, the imprisoned father of a protester killed during
the 2019 demonstrations, suffered a heart attack while in hospital. The
heart attack happened after security forces attempted to transfer him
back to Chubindar Prison in Qazvin. Saba Bakhtiari, his sister, reported
that doctors prevented the transfer, citing her brother's severe chest
pain and anxiety attacks. Bakhtiari had been hospitalized last week
following a hunger strike, which ended on November 14. He initiated the
strike to protest being denied outside medical treatment. His sister has
called for medical leave to allow him to continue treatment. The
Bakhtiari family has faced repeated arrests and imprisonments over the
past three years. Bakhtiari was sentenced to a total of 18 years in
prison and 74 lashes on charges including <gathering and colluding to
commit a crime against security,> <spreading lies,> <propaganda activity
against the Islamic Republic,> <disturbing public peace,> and
<collaboration with groups opposed to the Islamic Republic.> His son,
Pouya Bakhtiari, was fatally shot on November 19, 2019, on the second
day of widespread protests triggered by the government's sudden decision
to raise gas prices. Manouchehr Bakhtiari was initially arrested on
April 29, 2021, for seeking justice for his son.
Pouya Bakhtiari's mother, Nahid Shirpisheh, is also currently serving a
prison sentence in Zanjan.>>

<<14 Students Hospitalized After Carbon Monoxide Poisoning at Tehran
University
Fourteen female students were hospitalized Friday morning after
suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning in their university dormitory
in Tehran.
Emergency services were alerted around 8:30 AM and transported the
affected students to medical centers for treatment. The incident
occurred at Beheshti University's student dormitory. While the exact
cause remains unconfirmed, initial speculation points to a possible
technical fault in the heating system or poor ventilation. The
poisoning, which happened on Student Day in Iran, has raised concerns
about safety conditions in Iranian student housing. Similar carbon
monoxide incidents have frequently been reported in university
dormitories in recent years. Experts attribute these incidents to
inadequate infrastructure and insufficient safety standards as the
primary contributors to such risks. Authorities have not yet released
details about the specific circumstances of Friday morning's incident.>>

according to the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights. Previously,
Hemmati was arrested in 2019 for supporting protests. He was sentenced
in 2021 to two years in prison for <insulting Khamenei> and an
additional year for <propaganda against the Islamic Republic.> A writer

<<Evin Prisoners Denounce Death Sentence Surge
Forty political prisoners at Evin Prison condemned the Islamic
Republic's recent wave of death sentences against political prisoners
and detainees.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the prisoners said authorities have
intensified repression following the 2022 protests. The prisoners named
six individuals recently sentenced to death in Iran. These include
Abolhassan Montazer, Pouya Ghaedi, Vahid Bani-Amrian, Babak Alipour,
Mohammad Taghavi, and Akbar Shahrokh. They also referenced additional
death sentences for Pakhshan Azizi, Varisheh Moradi, Shahriyar Bayat,
Behrouz Ehsani, Mehdi Hassani, and Mohammad Javad Vafaei. The statement
draws parallels between the current crackdown and the severe repression
of the 1980s, arguing that the 2022 uprising has so deeply shaken the
Islamic Republic's foundations that it is responding with increased
judicial persecution.
The prisoners characterize these death sentences as a sign of the
government's fear and panic in the face of a growing justice-seeking
social movement. Fundamentally opposed to the death penalty, the Evin
Prison political prisoners called for collective solidarity and
resistance. They urged Iranian citizens from all walks of life to
protest the sentences "by any means possible" and to stand united
against capital punishment. "Today is the time to stand against
executions. It is the time to save the lives of political prisoners. Say
no to executions," they said. Tehran has executed a record number of
prisoners while global attention focused on the looming threat of
all-out war between Iran and Israel. According to Human rights
organizations, Iran used the tensions as cover to carry out the
executions. At least 166 people were executed in October, according to
the Norway-based Iran Human Rights Organization, marking the highest
number of executions in a single month since the organization began
documenting them 17 years ago.>>

<<Kurdish poet and writer Naser Hemmati in Andanan charged with
<Blasphemy Against the Prophet>
Naser Hemmati, a psychiatrist, writer, poet, and Kurdish civil activist
residing in Abdanan, a district in Ilam Province, has been charged with
<blasphemy against the Prophet of Islam> and <propaganda in support of
the Zionist state> following a summons to the Public and Revolutionary
Prosecutor's Office in Abdanan. These charges carry potentially severe
penalties. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for
Human Rights, Naser Hemmati was recently summoned to the First
Investigation Branch of the Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office
in Abdanan on charges of <blasphemy against the Prophet of Islam,>
<insulting Khamenei,> <spreading false information via social media,>
<propaganda against the state,> and <propaganda to support and
strengthen the Zionist state.> Following his arrest, he was temporarily
released on bail set at one billion tomans until the end of the judicial
proceedings. It is noteworthy that in recent years, this individual has
been repeatedly questioned and threatened by security agencies due to
his online activities. His recent summons on these charges comes despite
the fact that he has not been active on the social media platform X
(formerly Twitter) since 2021. In 2019, Naser Hemmati was arrested by
security forces for publishing a series of posts on Twitter supporting
the November 2019 protests and calling on people to participate in a
commemoration ceremony on December 26. Additionally, on August 10, 2021,
Hemmati was sentenced by the Revolutionary Court of Isfahan to two years
of imprisonment on charges of <insulting Khamenei.> While serving this
sentence, he was handed an additional one-year prison term in a separate
case for <propaganda against the state.> Hemmati is also the translator
of several books on psychotherapy and the author of a book titled
"Prison Notes", a collection of 103 daily journal entries from his time
in Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan. This book was published outside Iran in
2021 by Runak Publications.>>

Ali Majdam, Moein Khanfari, and Mohammadreza Moghadam
Iranwire - 5 Dec 2024 - by Roghayeh Rezaei
<<Three Arab Political Prisoners Face Imminent Execution
Three Iranian Arab political prisoners face imminent execution after
being transferred to a different prison in recent weeks. Several days
have passed since the last updates regarding Ali Majdam, Moein Khanfari,
and Mohammadreza Moghadam, Iranian Arab political prisoners sentenced to
death.
Speculation ranges from fears of their imminent execution to concerns
about their enforced disappearance. A former cellmate of Ali Majdam told
IranWire that the complete lack of news about the prisoners and their
prolonged solitary confinement are tactics used by security forces to
expedite their execution. He added that this also serves as punishment
by the judiciary for publicizing their hunger strike while in solitary
confinement. On October 15, the human rights organization Karoon
reported that the prisoners had been transferred from Sheiban Prison in
Ahvaz to Sepidar Prison in the same city for execution. Following the
announcement, reports surfaced that the Sheiban Prison warden summoned
and threatened two other co-defendants in the same case, who also face
execution. Karoon said that Khosrow Tarafi, the warden of Sheiban
Prison, summoned Habib Daris and Seyed Salem Al-Bushoukeh, two political
prisoners also at risk of execution, and warned them, <We have
transferred your four co-defendants [Ali Majdam, Moein Khanfari,
Mohammadreza Moghadam, and Seyed Adnan Mousavi] to Sepidar Prison for
execution, and your turn will come next.>
Shortly after, news broke that Majdam, Khanfari, and Moghadam launched a
hunger strike to protest their treatment and solitary confinement. Their
condition reportedly deteriorated. IranWire has been unable to confirm
whether the hunger strike has ended. There is currently no information
about their fate or health. After their families staged a multi-day
protest outside Sepidar Prison, the prisoners were briefly moved to the
general ward and allowed short phone calls with their families. However,
Majdam, Khanfari, and Moghadam were soon returned to solitary
confinement, likely triggering the hunger strike. Adnan Mousavi, who has
been held in Sepidar Prison from the start, remains in the general ward
and has not been placed in solitary confinement. A source familiar with
the situation, who spent years imprisoned as a political detainee in
Ahvaz, said the prisoners are on death row without access to family
visits, phone calls, or the possibility of serving their sentences in
the general ward. "Their executions could be carried out at any moment,"
the source said. The source explained that their last court hearing,
held in February, addressed charges of participating in the alleged
murder of four government agents, including two Basij members. He
highlighted a common pattern in Khuzestan, where intelligence services
and the IRGC often accuse activists of <waging war against God> and the
murder of security personnel to justify executions under the guise of
public safety. This pattern is reminiscent of the case of Abbas Daris,
an Arab citizen who witnessed the November 2019 Mahshahr protests. Daris
was accused of killing a police officer despite enduring severe torture,
securing the victim’s family’s consent, and the lack of evidence against
him. He remains at risk of execution on charges of <waging war against
God.> The source added that the lack of information about Majdam,
Khanfari, and Moghadam, coupled with the recent threats against their
co-defendants, suggests an effort by security forces to hasten their
executions. He claimed that the summoning of Habib Daris and Seyed Salem
Al-Bushoukeh was intended to coerce them into signing <repentance
letters> that could be used against the six political prisoners. Over
the past four decades, fabricating cases against political activists,
particularly those from ethnic minority groups like Arabs, Baluch, and
Kurds, has been a common practice for Iran's security agencies. Legal
experts and human rights activists have repeatedly questioned the
impartiality of Revolutionary courts, citing their close ties to
security agencies. They describe the verdicts issued by these courts as
unjust and inhumane. Ali Majdam, Moein Khanfari, and Mohammadreza
Moghadam were arrested in Ahvaz and surrounding areas between 2017 and
2019, alongside three others: Habib Daris, Adnan Mousavi, and Seyed
Salem Al-Bushoukeh. According to Atlas of Iranian Prisons, they were
detained and prosecuted as part of a group case. Over 30 individuals
were initially implicated, and six were ultimately sentenced to death by
the Ahvaz Revolutionary Court on charges of <waging war against God> and
<participation in the murder of two Basij members, a police officer, and
a soldier.> Several others in the case received long prison sentences.
Reports received by IranWire indicate severe physical and psychological
torture during the detainees' interrogations. The former cellmate of
Majdam, who spoke to IranWire, recounted that he was suspended by his
feet for hours and beaten with cables. The source also described the
arrest and assault of Mojdam's wife and Habib Daris in front of him.
"Ali was tortured while his wife was present in the room, and she was
also beaten in his presence. She was held for several months before Ali
gave a televised confession. Eventually, she was released on bail." A
former cellmate of Ali Majdam told IranWire that the prisoners facing
execution all come from impoverished backgrounds. "Imagine being
sentenced to death without even having a lawyer. Their families are
extremely poor, mostly farmers, who can't afford legal representation.
They have no connections and don't even know where to turn for help.
Moein only studied up to middle school. Ali Majdam has a high school
diploma and, before his arrest, made a living buying and selling used
cars. He would refurbish old, worn-out models like Peykans and sell them
for a small profit," the former cellmate said. Harsh sentences and
executions for marginalized citizens often make headlines. Lawyers
stress the need for awareness and international action on these cases.>>
