about women defending themselves against violence from husbands,

Five Arabs from Ahvaz, identified as Reza Hezbavi, Mehdi Samiri, Nabi
Samirat, Mehdi Samirat, and Ahmad Samirat, were arrested after being
summoned to the Revolutionary Court of Ahvaz. They have been transferred
to Ahvaz Central Prison (Shiban). According to a report received by the

against these individuals is performing Sunni prayers during their
pilgrimage. Furthermore, Reza Hezbavi's wife was also summoned for
interrogation. It is noteworthy that Reza Hezbavi had previously been
arrested in 2009 for participating in cultural activities. He was
released a month later on bail from Sepidar Prison in Ahvaz.>>

Toomaj Salehi
Iranwire - 2 Dec 2024
<<Iranian Rapper Toomaj Salehi Released from Prison
Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi has been released from prison after serving
his sentence, the Isfahan Province Judiciary's Public Relations Office
announced on Sunday. The state-run Mizan News Agency reported that
Salehi was released after completing a one-year imprisonment term for
<propaganda against the Islamic Republic.> His lawyer, Mostafa Nili,
previously said that the court had discontinued prosecution related to
the 2022 protests. Salehi was initially sentenced to death by a
Revolutionary Court, a verdict later overturned by the Supreme Court.
Salehi was arrested in October 2022 after voicing support for the
nationwide "Woman, Life, Freedom" protests, which erupted in September
of that year. He released songs criticizing the government and
supporting the protests, which called for greater freedom and women's
rights. He also posted pictures and videos of himself participating in
the demonstrations. In July 2023, a court sentenced Salehi to six years
and three months in prison for <corruption on Earth.>
He was released on bail on November 18 last year after the Supreme
Court, in response to an appeal, found "flaws in the original sentence"
and returned the case to a lower court for reexamination and possible
retrial. However, less than two weeks later, Salehi was returned to jail
to face new charges after publicly discussing his torture in prison in a
video.>>

<<Rapper Saman Yasin Leaves Iran Amid Ongoing Health and Legal Struggles
Saman Yasin, an Iranian rapper arrested during the Woman, Life, Freedom
protests, has left the country, multiple media sources have confirmed.
The Mehr News Agency reported Yasin's departure, following confirmations
from social media activists. Yasin, a vocal critic of Iran's clerical
establishment, was arrested on October 2, 2022, and reportedly tortured
during his detention. He was released on medical furlough last month. He
was sentenced to death on October 29 for <waging war against God,> but
the Supreme Court later overturned the sentence. In a letter earlier
this year, Yasin highlighted his ongoing struggles with mental and
physical health issues, stating, "I continue to suffer, yet incompetent
officials cannot even facilitate my access to medical care. Please
inform me of the crime I have committed. If I am found guilty, then
imprison me - if not, then acquit me," he wrote.>>

"'People's Pockets Are Empty': Black Friday in Iran
In Tehran's shopping centers, Black Friday’s global retail trends
collide with local economic realities. "Spend 200,000 tomans and get a
lottery ticket - only until the end of Black Friday" has been the
repeated promotional line for the past three days at an upscale shopping
center in northern Tehran, urging people to shop. Black Friday shopping
has gained popularity in Iran in recent years, despite having no
equivalent on the Persian calendar.
Businesses take advantage of the occasion to boost sales and revive
their struggling operations. Shops and stores, from uptown to downtown,
are adorned with red and black or gold and black Black Friday posters to
entice customers with discounts ranging from 20 to 70 per cent. While
areas like Naziabad and Salehabad in southern Tehran see fewer Black
Friday promotions, the closer one gets to northern Tehran, the more
frequent the advertisements become. From the clothing shops on Haft-e-Tir
Street to shopping malls like Mega Mall, Opal, Hamila Center, and
Palladium in northern Tehran, Black Friday fever has been raging from
Tuesday to Friday this week. Navid, who works at a children's clothing
store in the Haft Hoz neighborhood, says, "Most people's pockets are
empty because they’ve just passed the start of the school year and are
now preparing for Yalda Night. They can't afford Black Friday shopping.
But we shopkeepers have no choice and must use every occasion to boost
sales. Here, it's mostly middle-class people who shop, so our annual
profits aren't enough to offer huge discounts for events like Black
Friday. That's why shopping in areas like this isn’t as lively." In
contrast, Armin, who works at a shoe store in Opal Mall in northwest
Tehran, says, "We're a franchise of a famous leather goods brand with
multiple branches. Our products are usually expensive due to their
high-quality materials, many of which are imported. But for special
occasions like Black Friday, we offer up to 50 percent off. This
attracts our regular customers, who shop a lot during these times."
Nazanin, overwhelmed by the flood of promotional texts from both online
and physical stores, decided to visit one of the shopping centers to see
what the buzz was about. She says, "Prices are still high. Black Friday
discounts in Iran aren't like abroad, where you suddenly get a genuine
70 percent off quality goods. Here, most sellers raise prices a few days
before Black Friday, then lower them back to the original price or
slightly less and advertise them as Black Friday discounts. Whether the
discounts are real or not, shopping centers, particularly those in
northern Tehran, were packed on Thursday and Friday". Meanwhile, Iran's
Chamber of Guilds announced intensified market monitoring and
inspections for Black Friday. It stated, <Inspections revealed that many
discounts being offered are unrealistic and irregular. In cases of
violations - such as holding sales without following legal regulations,
offering fake discounts, and not adhering to legal profit margins -
legal action will be taken,> it added.

<<Iran Disrupts UN Session to Exclude Kurdish Human Rights Group
Governments allied with the Islamic Republic attempted to block a human
rights group raising concerns about the treatment of ethnic and
religious minorities in Iran at the 17th session of the Forum on
Minority Issues, which concluded at the United Nations Human RIghts
Council in Geneva on Friday. Venezuela, Belarus, and Iran interrupted a
Kurdistan Human Rights Association-Geneva (KMMK-G) representative
talking about the persecution of minority groups in the Islamic
Republic. "They discriminate against and oppress minorities in Iran and
even deny them a voice at the UN," KMMK-G president Taimoor Aliassi,
told IranWire. "They aim to silence minority voices, even here in
Geneva." KMMK-G has been raising concerns about the discrimination faced
by ethnic and religious minorities in Iran at the session. Speaking on
behalf of the group, Shenah Razabi highlighted grave human rights
violations targeting Kurdish, Baluch, and other non-Persian minorities
in the Islamic Republic. "Iran is a multi-ethnic and multi-religious
country with a population of over 80 million, composed mainly of
Baluchis, Persians, Kurds, Azerbaijani-Turks, Turkmens, and Ahwaz-Arabs,"
she said during the Forum on Minority Rights session. "According to
Iran's former Minister of Education, over 70 per cent of Iran's children
starting primary school are bilingual, with Persian still not used as
the primary language even after first grade. ... Despite being the
majority of the Iranian population, non-Shia Muslims and non-Persians
are excluded from political life," she added. Established in 2006 and
based in Geneva, the Kurdistan Human Rights Association works to raise
awareness of human rights violations affecting minorities. The United
Nations Forum on Minority Issues - running 28-29 November in Geneva, as
part of the current UN Human Rights Council session - has already drawn
controversy and criticism from UN member states after Diane Ala'i, an
independent human rights expert and a Baha'i of French and Iranian
descent, was barred from becoming chair.
IranWire understands that the decision was influenced by the Iranian
government.
The move provoked sharp criticism from UN members and human rights
advocates for barring a qualified member of a minority from chairing
deliberations concerning minorities. Nominations for the Forum chair
rotate across different UN member states groupings, which for the
current session was the Western European and Others Group, and are
decided by the president of the Human Rights Council. The current
president is Ambassador Omar Zniber, Permanent Representative of Morocco
to the UN in Geneva, and IranWire understands the objection came from
the Asia-Pacific group and specifically the Islamic Republic.>>
