French Town Honors
NCRI - November 30, 2024 - in Articles, Solidarity
<<French Town Honors Iranian Political Prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared
The municipality of Villiers-Adam in France displayed a large poster of
Maryam Akbari Monfared, one of Iran's longest-held female political
prisoners, on its city hall facade from November 9, 2024, for two weeks.
The poster, titled <Courage in the Face of Injustice,> aims to spotlight
her enduring fight for justice. Beneath the image, a caption highlighted
her plight: <After 15 years in prison, Maryam Akbari Monfared's
suffering continues as she seeks justice for her relatives executed by
the Iranian regime." The poster also underscored Iran's alarming record
of executions in 2024, stating, "678 executions in Iran this
year-support political prisoners."
Escalating Harassment in Detention
Despite completing her initial 15-year sentence, Maryam has faced
relentless persecution. Recently, she was transferred from Semnan Prison
to Qarchak Prison in Varamin, a notorious facility, in a move widely
viewed as an escalation of her mistreatment. The regime's judiciary has
extended her imprisonment by two years through fabricated charges,
ensuring her continued detention beyond her original sentence. Maryam
Akbari Monfared was arrested during the 2009 protests and was due for
release in 2019 after serving her 10-year sentence. However, the regime
extended her imprisonment by five additional years and later tacked on
another two years with trumped-up charges.
Charges and Retaliatory Actions
The additional charges against Maryam, orchestrated by the Ministry of
Intelligence, include accusations of <propaganda against the regime,>
<insulting the leadership,> <spreading falsehoods,> and <inciting public
unrest.> These charges have been cited in both the Semnan and Evin show
trials. As noted by former UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in
Iran, Professor Javaid Rehman, Maryam's primary "offense" is her pursuit
of justice for her family members executed by the Iranian regime.
Family Tragedy and the Pursuit of Justice
Maryam's determination stems from the loss of her loved ones. Her
brother, Alireza Akbari, was tortured to death in September 1981.
Another brother, Gholamreza Akbari, was executed in 1985. Her siblings,
Roqiyeh and Abdolreza Akbari, were among the victims of the 1988
massacre of political prisoners. In retaliation for her calls for
accountability, the regime went as far as issuing an order in July 2024
to confiscate her family's assets, a punitive measure targeting her and
her relatives. Maryam Akbari Monfared's story represents both the
Iranian regime's brutality and the resilience of those who stand against
injustice. The initiative by Villiers-Adam serves as a powerful reminder
of the global support for political prisoners in Iran and the urgent
need to hold the regime accountable for its human rights violations.>>

Varisheh Moradi Pakhshan Azizi
Medyanews - November 29, 2024
<<Global campaign seeks to abolish death sentences for Warisheh Moradi,
Pakhshan Azizi
Amid escalating international condemnation of the death sentences
against Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi, 18 Iranian and global human
rights organisations have issued joint statements urging the immediate
cancellation of their executions. Meanwhile, 150 Kurdish women from the
Kurdistan Region of Iraq have appealed directly to Iraqi President Abdul
Latif Rashid, calling for decisive intervention to halt these unjust
sentences. Amid mounting efforts to save two Kurdish women
socio-political activists, Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi, from
execution, 18 Iranian and international human rights organisations have
issued a joint statement demanding the immediate cancellation of their
death sentences. Similarly, 150 women activists in the Kurdistan Region
of Iraq (KRI) have written to Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid, urging
him to intervene on the women's behalf. The joint statement
highlights the aftermath of the 2022 "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" (Woman, Life,
Freedom) uprising, noting the Iranian regime’s increased oppression
against women and Kurdish people, who are two of the key pillars of
resistance to its rule. It asserts that brave women like Warisheh Moradi
and Pakhshan Azizi, falsely accused and sentenced to death, face
systematic persecution for their unwavering fight against the Islamic
Republic's repressive policies. The statement calls on Iranian society
and freedom advocates worldwide to intensify efforts to halt these
executions, stressing the importance of resisting a regime that
weaponises patriarchal oppression against women who refuse submission.
In parallel, women activists, politicians, journalists, and academics in
the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (KRI) launched a campaign titled 'End
Executions of Women in Struggle', to amplify the call for justice for
Moradi and Azizi. As part of this campaign, activists sent letters not
only to the Iraqi president but also to the European Union and
international human rights organisations, urging them to apply pressure
to stop the executions.
The letter to President Abdul Latif Rashid emphasised both national and
humanitarian responsibilities, stating:
"We call upon you to take immediate action to overturn the unjust
sentences imposed on activists Warisheh Moradi and Pakhshan Azizi. In
doing so, let us honour the legacy of the late President Mam Jalal
Talabani, whose unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom in
Kurdistan remains a guiding inspiration".
Copies of the letter were also distributed to other prominent political
figures, including the president’s wife, Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, alongside
key members of Iraqi and Kurdish parties, to garner broader political
backing. The signatories also affirmed that the appeal had been
submitted to the European Parliament and international human rights
organisations, aiming to secure global attention for this pressing
humanitarian concern.
Moradi and Azizi, two prominent Kurdish socio-political activists from
Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhilat), were detained by the security forces of
the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2023 and subsequently sentenced to
death. The evidence against them has been widely discredited. In
response, a broad, global advocacy campaign has been underway to halt
the execution of these activists, highlighting the injustice that they
face.>>

Mehrab Abdullahzadeh
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 29 Nov 2024
<<Mehrab Abdullahzadeh, a Kurdish detainee of the "Women, Life, Freedom"
movement sentenced to death
Mehrab Abdullahzadeh, a Kurdish man from Oshnavieh, West Azerbaijan (Urmia)
province, who was arrested during the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement
and imprisoned in Urmia Central Prison, has recently been sentenced to
death by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran on charges
of <armed rebellion.> According to reports received by the Hengaw
Organization for Human Rights, in the summer of 2024, Mehrab
Abdullahzadeh was sentenced to death by the Second Branch of the
Revolutionary Court in Urmia on charges of <armed rebellion.> Hengaw has
learned that Mehrab's case includes allegations of killing a member of
the Basij forces. Based on these allegations, he was tried for <armed
rebellion> by the Second Branch of the Revolutionary Court in Urmia. The
death sentence was officially conveyed to him in late September this
year while he was in Urmia Central Prison. Mehrab Abdullahzadeh was
abducted by security forces in the fall of 2022 during the "Woman, Life,
Freedom" movement and transferred to a security detention center in
Urmia. After enduring months of torture and interrogation, he was
transferred to Urmia Central Prison and approximately two weeks ago was
moved to the political ward of the prison.>>

Maryam Akbari Monfared
NCRI - November 29, 2024 - in Solidarity, Women's News
<<Le Monde: Global Intellectuals Demand Freedom for Maryam Akbari
Monfared
In a compelling statement published by Le Monde, a collective of 32
prominent intellectuals, human rights activists, women's rights
advocates, and political figures have called for the immediate release
and demanded freedom for Maryam Akbari Monfared, a political prisoner
detained in Iran for 15 years. Among the signatories are Élisabeth
Badinter, a celebrated French philosopher, Ingrid Betancourt, a former
Colombian senator and activist, and Laurence Tubiana, a key figure in
global climate policy. Their appeal highlights not only the injustices
faced by Akbari Monfared but also the systemic repression of women and
political dissidents under the Iranian regime. Maryam Akbari Monfared's
imprisonment stems from her peaceful demands for justice, particularly
for the 1988 mass executions in Iran that claimed the lives of several
family members. As a mother of three, she has endured inhumane
treatment, isolation, and a denial of basic rights, becoming a symbol of
resilience and courage. Her writings from prison reflect her unyielding
spirit. In one such letter, she proclaimed: "The Islamic Republic has
brought nothing but death, plunder, and bloodshed to Iran… I demand
justice for my stolen life and for all innocent lives shattered."
Despite completing her sentence, Maryam remains in detention, with
authorities arbitrarily extending her imprisonment. In July 2024, the UN
Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran, Javaid Rehman, condemned her
treatment and characterized the 1988 mass executions as genocide and
crimes against humanity, urging international investigations.
Maryam Akbari Monfared and her four siblings slain in the 1980s.
The publication of this statement in Le Monde, one of France's leading
newspapers, amplifies the call for justice on a global scale. The
article serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for international
action to address human rights abuses in Iran. The signatories have
urged France and European nations to champion the cause of Maryam Akbari
Monfared and bring accountability to the Iranian regime for its
decades-long record of atrocities. This collective effort demonstrates
the powerful solidarity of global activists, urging the world not to
forget the plight of political prisoners in Iran, particularly women
like Maryam Akbari Monfared, whose courage continues to inspire.
The statement is endorsed by a diverse group of notable individuals and
organizations:>>

NCRI - 01 Dec, 2024 - in Statements, Women's News
<<The Criminal <Chastity and Hijab> Law: A New Wave of Crackdown on
Iranian Women and Girls
The new criminal and inhuman law must be opposed with the slogan,
"Woman, Resistance, Freedom"
After months of being passed back and forth between the regime’s
Parliament and the Guardian Council, and a year and a half after it was
drafted by the regime’s judiciary, the so-called <Chastity and Hijab>
law was finally published on November 30, 2024. The law consists of 74
articles across five chapters. Originally titled <Support for the
Culture of Chastity and Hijab,> the draft was prepared following the
2022 uprising and submitted to the Majlis by Ebrahim Raisi. On November
27, 2024, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of Majlis, announced in
a press conference that the Majlis-approved “Chastity and Hijab” law
would be implemented starting December 13, 2024. He claimed that the law
does not involve <morality patrols or imprisonment.> However, the law's
actual text, divided into five chapters, assigns oppressive
responsibilities to various government institutions, including the
Ministry of Culture and Guidance, the state broadcaster (IRIB), the
Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, municipalities, the
Ministry of Science, and other government bodies. For example, Chapter
Three of this law flagrantly violates the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, international conventions such as the International Covenant on
Civil and Political Rights, and conventions related to women's rights.
It compels numerous ministries, organizations, and municipalities to go
beyond morality patrols in cracking down on improper hijab or its
removal.
Clause 8 of Article 16 specifically mandates municipalities and village
councils across the country, in collaboration with organizations such as
the regime's Propaganda Organization, the Ministry of Culture and
Guidance, the Ministry of Sports and Youth, IRIB, and the Headquarters
for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, to <maintain ongoing
supervision of public spaces under their management, such as parks,
cultural centers, historical sites, and urban public transport. They are
required to take the necessary steps to promote conditions for chastity
and hijab, ensure the active presence of virtue promoters, and provide
support for their actions in these spaces.> In addition to targeting
women under the guise of enforcing hijab rules, this law imposes severe
penalties on government employees, business owners, and others who
refuse to cooperate with the regime's enforcement measures. Those who
fail to report or act against individuals opposing mandatory hijab, or
who refuse to enforce the law, face punishments including five to six
years of suspension from public service, fines equivalent to two to six
months' worth of business income, or other significant financial
penalties. To suppress protests and prevent the spread of dissent among
women and the broader society, the law also assigns the Ministry of
Intelligence, the police intelligence unit (FARAJA), and the IRGC
Intelligence Organization to enforce measures against noncompliance with
hijab rules. The Women's Committee of the National Council of Resistance
of Iran (NCRI), echoing Mrs. Maryam Rajavi's statement, views this
"criminal and inhumane" law as a new phase in the regime's efforts to
crack down on Iranian women and girls, aimed at stifling uprisings. The
NCRI Women's Committee calls on all international organizations and
relevant bodies to condemn this law. The NCRI Women's Committee urges
all freedom-loving Iranian women to resist this oppressive and inhumane
law under the banner of "Woman, Resistance, Freedom."

protests, along with Mehdi Tohidi Asl, Azam Ahooghalandar, and Hossein
Jafari, have been sentenced to a total of fourteen years and ten months
of imprisonment by the judiciary of Islamic Republic of Iran. According

Jafari, and Nemat Afshar were arrested on Saturday, September 16, 2023,
coinciding with the anniversary of the <Woman, Life, Freedom" movement.
They were later released temporarily from prison upon posting bail. It
is noteworthy that Nemat Afshar was wounded on September 20, 2022, by
direct shotgun fire. Despite being seriously injured with dozens of
pellets embedded in his face and head, he was arrested amid physical
assault and transferred to a security detention center. Afshar endured
three months in detention with severe injuries. During this time, he
lost sight in one eye and suffered the breaking of a finger and several
ribs under torture aimed at forcing a confession. He was eventually
released after three months under what was described as a <pardon
decree.> Before his re-arrest, he underwent multiple surgeries to
address the injuries sustained during his initial detention.>>

Advocacy
The Iranian regime has sentenced two bereaved mothers, Mahboubeh
Ramezani and Rahimeh Yousefzadeh, each to 1.5 years in prison. These
women, known as "Mothers of Aban," have been advocating for justice for
their children, who were killed during the November 2019 uprising in
Iran.
Background of the Case
Mahboubeh Ramezani, mother of Pejman Gholipour, and Rahimeh Yousefzadeh,
mother of Navid Behboudi, were convicted on charges of <propaganda
against the regime,> <membership in the Mothers of Aban group,> and
<insulting Ali Khamenei,> the regime's Supreme Leader. The sentences,
initially issued by Branch 2 of the Revolutionary Court in Shahriar,
were upheld by Branch 36 of the Tehran Appeals Court, leaving no room
for further appeal.
Who Were Navid Behboudi and Pejman Gholipour?
Navid Behboudi was a promising 24-year-old student of mechanical
engineering, born in September 1996 in Tehran. A top student during his
schooling years, Navid was killed on November 17, 2019, in Qaleh Hasan
Khan, a district near Tehran, after security forces shot him directly.
Pejman Gholipour, born on August 29, 2001, had recently graduated from
high school. He was killed during the protests when security forces
fired five bullets at him.
The November 2019 Protests
The protests, sparked by a sudden fuel price hike, erupted across nearly
200 cities and towns in Iran, with approximately 900 demonstrations. The
uprising saw intense participation from women and young people.
Protesters targeted symbols of regime control, including gas stations,
banks, seminaries, and government offices. The regime responded with
brutal force, killing at least 1,500 protesters within 48 hours,
according to human rights organizations. Cities like Tehran, Shiraz,
Karaj, Behbahan, Kermanshah, and Mahshahr witnessed mass killings, with
security forces using guns, heavy weaponry, and even tanks.
Additionally, 12,000 protesters were arrested, and 4,000 others were
injured.

Mothers of Aban
The Mothers of Aban, including Ramezani and Yousefzadeh, are a group of
women demanding accountability for their children's deaths during the
November 2019 crackdown. Despite facing arrests, interrogations, and
judicial harassment, these mothers have persistently advocated for
justice and voiced their opposition to the regime’s human rights abuses.
The sentencing of Mahboubeh Ramezani and Rahimeh Yousefzadeh underscores
the Iranian regime's relentless crackdown on dissent and its effort to
silence voices demanding justice for those killed during the November
2019 uprising. These women’s unwavering determination to seek justice
serves as a poignant reminder of the heavy price paid by those who
challenge tyranny in Iran.>>

<<Iran's Regime Executes 27 Prisoners in 4 Days, Total Reaches 540 Under
Pezeshkian
At least 27 prisoners were executed between Monday, November 25, and
Thursday, November 28, 2024-an average of one execution every three and
a half hours.
The total number of executions has reached 540 under the presidency of
Massoud Pezeshkian.
Ali Khamenei's relentless cycle of crime and executions, fueled by his
fear of the people's uprising, continues to escalate. Like Zahhak, the
mythical tyrant with snakes on his shoulders, he sends more young people
to the gallows every day. On Thursday, November 28, six prisoners were
hanged: Amin Maleki, Mehdi Shirvani, and Fardin Abdollahi in Shiraz;
Mohammad Ali in Qazvin; and Davood Mohammadi, 33, along with Osman
Dahmardeh, 26, in Yazd. On Wednesday, November 27, the regime executed
seven prisoners: Reza Shirzehi, 21, who was only 17 at the time of the
alleged crime, along with Hamed Pakdel and two other prisoners in
Qezelhessar; Morteza Pashapoori in Tabriz; Hadi Ghiyami in Nahavand; and
Davood Rajabi, 30, in Qom Central Prison. On Tuesday, November 26, five
prisoners were hanged: Jahangir Rahimi in Saqqez; Ehsan Vali Abadi, 30,
in Karaj Central Prison; Farhad Khosravi Sadkhro in Gorgan; Jafar Mirza
Qasemi, 35, in Zanjan; and Jamshid Taherkhani in Qazvin. On Monday,
November 25, nine prisoners were executed, with the names of three
victims previously reported. The six additional prisoners were Reza
Shahbazi and Nezamoddin Noorolhaq, 27, in Shiraz; Amirhossein Rahimi and
Ali Rostami in Isfahan; Hassan Karimi in Saveh; and Alireza Nourian in
Mashhad. In total, between Monday and Wednesday, at least 27 prisoners
were executed, averaging one every three and a half hours. On Sunday,
November 24, in addition to four executions previously reported, another
prisoner was hanged in Qezelhessar. On Saturday, November 23, Mostafa
Souri was executed in Kermanshah, and on Thursday, November 21, Majid
Jafari, 38, was executed in Shahr-e Kord. On Wednesday, November 20, Ali
Tarkeshband in Rasht, along with Mohammad Reza Saberi and another
prisoner in Birjand, were executed. This brought the total number of
executions to 152 in the Iranian month of Aban (October 22- November
20). Since Massoud Pezeshkian took office, the number of executions has
reached at least 540. In another horrific incident, prison guards at
Karaj Central Prison delayed transferring an injured prisoner to the
hospital after he fell from his bed. After several days of neglect, the
prisoner’s condition worsened. On Sunday, November 24, he was finally
taken to the prison infirmary, where he died.

Protests in Brussels
Medyanews - July 7, 2024
<<Protests in Brussels against death sentences of Pakhshan Azizi and
Sharifeh Mohammadi
There were protests agains the death sentences of the Kurdish women's
activists Pakhshan Azizi and Sharifeh Mohammadi in Brussels on 26 July.
Kurdish activists gathered outside the Iranian embassy to accuse the
Iranian regime of misogynist policies. Kurdish and other political
activists protested against the death sentences of Kurdish women's
activists Pakhshan Azizi and Sharifeh Mohammadi outside the Iranian
embassy in Brussels on Friday 26 July.
The event, organised by the Free Women’s Society of Eastern Kurdistan (KJAR),
the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) and the European Kurdish Women's
Movement (TJK-E) demanded freedom for Azizi, Mohammadi and other Kurdish
women's activists imprisoned in Iran. The need for a common fight
against death sentences handed down by the Iranian regime was hammered
home in speeches held at the event.
A statement was issued saying that "in Iran, poverty and unemployment
have reached a dangerous level." It continued, "Those who, in the guise
of religion, impose decisions on people’s lives, live in extreme wealth
themselves and do not consider the lives of the people’s, have become
the greatest threat to society."
The statement pointed out that "the Iranian regime systematically
oppresses women because what it fears most is women and their power".
They said of the anti-women policies of the Iranian regime: "A woman who
is beaten at home by her husband is also, generally, oppressed by the
male-dominated state. If today Iran arbitrarily imposes decisions on
people and sanctions on women and political activists, this is primarily
due to the silence of human rights organisations and institutions," the
statement continued, calling on "all organisations and institutions
working under the name of human rights to protect these women's lives
and secure their freedom".

Zeinab Jalaliyan - Varisheh Moradi
The statement saluted the resistance of other women held as political
prisoners in Iran, like Zeinab Jalaliyan, who has been imprisoned for 17
years, and Warisheh Moradi, who has endured months of mental and
physical torture since being detained in August last year. The event
concluded with slogans such as "Jin Jiyan Azadi" (Women, Life, Freedom),
"Freedom for political prisoners", "Down with the murderous Iranian
regime" and "Down with the regime against women." >>
