irgc kill and paralyze pregnant women
NCRI - Womens committee - 10 August 2024 - in Articles, in Women's News
<<Security Forces’ Violence Kills Pregnant Woman and Daughter, Paralyzes
Mother of Two
Shooting in Khash: Deaths of a pregnant woman, 25, and daughter, 5 years
old
On the morning of Tuesday, August 6, 2024, plainclothes agents from the
IRGC Intelligence in Khash, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, opened fire
on a moving Peugeot 405 vehicle without any prior warning. This tragic
event resulted in the death of a 25-year-old pregnant woman named Nazila
Irandegani, who was shot multiple times and died instantly. Her
five-year-old daughter, Tina Nasiri, succumbed to her injuries later in
the hospital.
Three other passengers in the car, including another child, were
severely injured.
Nazila Irandegani, along with her husband Shahram Nasiri and their
children, were passing through the Khash intersection when their vehicle
was targeted by the IRGC forces. Shahram Nasiri was detained by the
agents and taken to an undisclosed location. This is not an isolated
incident of indiscriminate and arbitrary shooting by the IRGC and State
Security Force (SSF) leading to the deaths of innocent children and
civilians. In 2022, similar incidents resulted in the deaths of Kian
Pirfalak, 9, Mona Naghib, 8, and Soha Etebari, 12, when armed regime
agents shot at civilian vehicles.
Kian Pirfalak
Shooting in Nur: Woman Opposed to Mandatory Hijab Is Paralyzed
In another alarming development, a 31-year-old woman named Arezou Badri,
who was not observing the mandatory hijab, was paralyzed after being
shot by police. Arezou, a mother of two, originally from Ardabil and
residing in Babolsar, Mazandaran Province, is currently in the intensive
care unit of Valiasr Hospital in Tehran under strict surveillance by
security agents. On the night of Monday, July 22, Arezou Badri and her
friend were traveling from Nur to Babolsar when the police ordered them
to stop via loudspeaker. Arezou's car was ordered to be impounded due to
hijab violations. They ignored the warning and continued their journey,
prompting the police to shoot first at the car's tire and then at the
door. A bullet struck Arezou's back, leading to severe injuries.
Subsequently, the police physically assaulted the two women to arrest
them. Upon realizing Arezou's severe condition and heavy bleeding, the
officers called an ambulance in panic.
PIC
Arezou Badr
Arezou Badri was initially taken to a hospital in Nur, then transferred
to a hospital in Sari for lung surgery. Her lung remains infected.
Simultaneously, many security forces from Tehran were deployed to
Khomeini Hospital in Sari to prevent any information from being released
about her condition or any images being taken. The authorities also
confiscated Arezou and her friend's mobile phones and deactivated her
Instagram account to prevent any media coverage. After a week, she was
moved to Tehran for the removal of the bullet from her back. After ten
days, surgeons successfully removed the bullet, but her lung and spinal
cord sustained serious damage, leaving her paralyzed from the waist
down. Specialists have stated that the chances of her regaining the
ability to walk are very slim. At the Valiasr Hospital, Arezou Badri is
under constant surveillance and her family is only allowed brief visits,
during which their mobile phones are confiscated to prevent any photos
or videos.
No legal action has been taken against the officer who fired the shot.
Arezou Badri's situation is reminiscent of the intense security measures
taken during the hospitalization of 17-year-old Armita Geravand.

These incidents highlight the ongoing issues of violence and
heavy-handed tactics used by Iranian security forces against civilians,
including women and children, raising serious human rights concerns. The
NCRI Women's Committee calls on the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence
Against Women and the Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran to
investigate these incidents and hold the regime accountable for its
violent and arbitrary shooting on innocent civilians, particularly under
the pretext of breaching the mandatory Hijab.>>

Iranwire - 9 August , 2024
<<In a historic moment at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, two
Iranian-born athletes, still friends and now representing different
nations, have both secured medals in women's taekwondo. Nahid Kiani,
competing for Iran in the 57 kg category, secured the silver medal after
defeating South Korea's Kim Yu Jin. This medal makes Kiani the first
female athlete in Iran's history to reach an Olympic final. Minutes
before Kiani's final match, Kimia Alizadeh, formerly of Iran but now
representing Bulgaria, secured a bronze medal in the same weight class.
Alizadeh defeated opponents from China and Tunisia to claim her place on
the podium. This marks Alizadeh's second Olympic medal, following her
bronze in the Rio Olympics where she competed under the Iranian flag.
Kimia and Nahid were once friends, companions, and "safe girls" for each
other. For over five years, Kiani had been both a training partner and a
rival to Alizadeh. During Alizadeh's preparations for the 2016 Rio
Olympics, Kiani supported her, despite knowing she would not compete in
Rio. She accompanied Kimia to the Chalos camp in the north of Iran,
trained with her daily in Tehran and at the Taekwondo House, and was
devastated upon hearing the news of Alizadeh's asylum in Germany,
reportedly crying for hours. Kiani was heartbroken because she knew
about the departure of Alizadeh, Iran's taekwondo's only female Olympic
medalist in the country's history at the time. In January 2020, amidst
the aftermath of government repression and public protests, and shortly
after the downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane, Alizadeh's decision to
seek asylum in Germany made headlines. No longer wanting to compete or
live under the Iranian flag, she published a post on Instagram
explaining her departure. She wrote, "Whatever they said, I wore. I
repeated every sentence they ordered... They said my medal was due to
the mandatory hijab and attributed it to their own management and tact."
After her defeat by Kimia Alizadeh in Tokyo, Nahid Kiani faced
some of the most challenging days of her career.
She wrote afterwards: "Despite my family's opposition to
championship sports, I had used the number 2020 in most of my passwords
for years to remember that I have to participate in these competitions."
Upon returning to Iran after her elimination, Kiani received no
welcome from the managers and sports authorities.
Yet, she persevered and achieved remarkable success, adding
multiple titles to her hall of fame: a gold medal at the Islamic Games
in 2021, a gold medal at the Asian Games in 2022, a gold medal at the
Asian Championship in 2022, and a gold medal at the World Taekwondo
Championship in 2023. She now enters the 2024 Paris Olympics with four
consecutive championship titles.>>

<<Iran's Supreme Court Upholds Death Sentences for Six Political
Prisoners
Iran's Supreme Court has confirmed the death sentences of six
political prisoners held in Vakilabad Prison in northeastern Mashhad,
human rights sources reported. The prisoners, identified as Malek Ali
Fadaie-Nasab, Farhad Shakeri, Isa Eidmohammadi, Abdolhakim Azim Gorgij,
Abdolrahman Gorgij, and Taj Mohammad Khormaly, were initially sentenced
to death in early July 2023 by Branch 4 of the Mashhad Revolutionary
Court on charges of <armed rebellion.> In 2019, they were first
sentenced to death by Branch 1 of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court under
Judge Mahmoud Davoodabadi. The charges included <armed rebellion through
membership in the Salafi group Hizb al-Furqan and membership in the
National Solidarity Front of Sunni Muslims of Iran.> On Friday, the
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights voiced deep concern
over the recent spate of executions in Iran. According to reports,
Iranian authorities have executed at least 29 people across the country
in a short period, following 38 executions in July.
This brings the reported number of executions to at least 345
this year, including 15 women.
"Those executed were primarily convicted of drug-related offenses
or murder. Nearly half of the executions since the beginning of 2024
were for drug-related offenses," said Volker Turk on Friday. "Imposing
the death penalty for offenses not involving intentional killing is
incompatible with international human rights norms and standards, as we
have repeatedly emphasized," he added.
According to a report by Amnesty International, Iran has reached
its highest level of death sentence executions in the last eight years,
with the Islamic Republic's judiciary executing 853 people in 2023
alone.>>

NCRI - Womens committee - 9 August 2024 - in Women's News
<<Crucifixion of Female Prisoners: A Detailed Report from Mashhad
Central Prison
Following the protests by female prisoners in Mashhad Central
Prison (Vakilabad), guard officers, under the orders of prison
officials, entered the ward and subjected the inmates to beatings and
torture. On July 30 and 31, 2024, female prisoners in Mashhad Central
Prison protested due to the lack of facilities and unbearable heat in
the wards and kitchen. They expressed their dissatisfaction by breaking
windows and security cameras. In response, under the orders of Ali Abdi,
the head of Vakilabad Prison, the guards entered the women's ward and
clamped down on the prisoners. The prison infirmary also refused to
treat the injured prisoners.
Reasons for the Protest
Prisoners were dissatisfied with the extreme heat, poor quality
of food, unsanitary kitchen conditions, lack of refrigerators, washing
machines, stoves, and air conditioning devices. The increase in the
number of prisoners and the lack of attention to sanitary conditions led
to the spread of lice, cockroaches, and mice in the wards. Due to the
lack of washing machines, prisoners are forced to wash their clothes in
the bathroom or sinks. The building’s walls are covered with mold and
mildew, and the entry of skin medication into the prison is prohibited.
Second Protest by Female Prisoners
In the second protest on August 3, 2024, the special guards acted
under the orders of the prison officials and cracked down on the
prisoners even more severely. The cell doors were closed for 8 hours,
and prisoners were not allowed to go to the restroom, store, courtyard,
or infirmary. Guards beat the doors with batons and created noise. Some
prisoners were transferred to the Asayesh ward, which is for mentally
ill patients.
Disciplinary files were opened for some prisoners, and some were
deprived of visits, calls, and leave.
Mashhad Prison
Crucifixion of Prisoners
In the Asayesh ward, prisoners were crucified to beds, causing
wounds and infections on their hands and feet. They are only released
from this position to go to the restroom and eat, during which one hand
remains cuffed to the bed. Prison officials have forced these prisoners
to take tranquilizers and sleeping pills, leading to addiction.
Leadership of Suppression and Torture
According to prisoners, Ali Abdi (prison head), Amir Pasban
(internal manager), Jahedi (head of intelligence protection), and Vali
Khani (deputy head of intelligence protection) were responsible for
directing the suppression and torture of prisoners. Female prisoners are
demanding the replacement of the prison oversight judge (Tabatabaei),
who is responsible for their psychological torture and harassment.
Special guard forces remained stationed in the women’s ward until the
end of August 2, 2024.
About Mashhad Central Prison
More than 8,000 prisoners are serving their sentences in Mashhad
Central Prison. Most are incarcerated for social crimes such as theft,
drug offenses, and family disputes. Several are also imprisoned for
political or ideological reasons. There are also several Sunni prisoners
in this prison. On Thursday, September 24, 2020, the U.S. Treasury
Department sanctioned two judges and three prisons, including the
Central Prison of Mashhad, for their roles in torture, inhumane and
degrading treatment, and arbitrary detentions of individuals for
participating in peaceful assemblies.>>
