the Intelligence Department on his home. He was released on bail after
spending 42 days in custody during which he was subjected to physical
violence. The First Branch of the Saqqez Revolutionary Court, presided
over by Judge Javad Mostafaei, charged him with <participation in
gathering and collusion against domestic security,> <propaganda against
the Islamic Republic,> and <insulting> Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.>>

Pakhshan Azizi
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 13 Feb 2024
<<Kurdish Journalist Pakhshan Azizi Faces "Revolt" Charges, Risking
Heavy Sentence
Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish journalist, social worker, and former
political prisoner, is currently facing serious accusations of <revolt>
by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran. These charges
carry the potential for severe punishment, including the death penalty.
According to reports received by the Hengaw Organization for Human
Rights, Pakhshan Azizi, a social work graduate, has been accused of
<revolt> and <membership in anti-government groups> by Branch 5 of the
Evin Security Prosecutor's Office. During her 193-day detention,
Pakhshan Azizi has been subjected to severe pressure and denied basic
rights, including access to legal representation. Initially held in ward
209 of Evin prison, known as the Intelligence Department's detention
center, Pakhshan Azizi was later transferred to the women's ward of Evin
prison on December 11, 2023. Her arrest by Iranian Intelligence forces
took place in the Kharazi quarter of Tehran on August 4, 2023. Sources
have also reported the arrest of several members of her family, who were
subsequently released after a few days. It's notable that Pakhshan Azizi
has a history of activism and had previously been arrested during a
protest gathering of Kurdish students at Tehran University on November
16, 2009. Following four months of detention, she was released on bail
of 100 million tomans on March 19, 2010. Due to persistent pressure and
threats from Iranian security institutions, Pakhshan Azizi later left
Iran. She dedicated herself to researching and improving the situation
of women in Iraqi Kurdistan and Syrian Kurdistan through social work
initiatives.
The current accusations against Pakhshan Azizi highlight the ongoing
challenges faced by journalists and activists in Iran and underscore the
need for international attention to protect human rights and ensure fair
treatment within the judicial system.>>

NO-hijabis vs. taliban

<<Taliban detain women, girls for violating hijab rules
The officials of Taliban's Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and
Prevention of Vice keep arresting and detaining women and girls for
violating hijab rules. 13 girls were detained in Kabul for wearing <bad
hijab> on Sunday.
News Center- The officials of Taliban's Ministry of Promotion of Virtue
and Prevention of Vice have been patrolling in the cities of
Afghanistan, arresting and detaining women and girls for wearing <bad
hijab>. According to the local reports, 13 girls were detained in
shopping centers, street markets and public spaces in Kabul on Sunday
for wearing <bad hijab>. The Taliban forces have built checkpoints
across Kabul, stopping cars to question people and arresting women and
girls for wearing <bad hijab>. The women in Kabul say that the aim of
the Taliban is to spread fear among women and girls because they are
afraid of women's movements. <What will happen if we take up arms like
our Kurdish sisters and do not remain silent against oppression like our
Iranian sisters?> asked an Afghan woman in an interview with NuJINHA.>>

Opinion by G. d'A.: I expressed my opinion about this topic before with
basically one question: Do the freedom-loving women of Iran want to be
ruled by a taliban-like regime? Well, unfortunately they already are
but... the NO-hijabis say NO to the mandatory hijab and they are
standing as firm and resolute as their Afghan sisters who are resisting
as hard against any kind of oppression.

<<Iranian Baluch Man Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison
Iranian authorities have sentenced a young Baluch man, Mohammad Narooie,
to 12 years in prison for alleged <membership in anti-Islamic Republic
groups.> According to Haalvsh, an organization that monitors rights
violations against Iran's Baluch minority, the alleged actions leading
to this charge remain undisclosed, raising concerns about the fairness
of the trial. Narooie, a 22-year-old resident of Zahedan, was arrested
by the Ministry of Intelligence on April 8, 2023. During his detention,
he was denied access to legal representation, in violation of his basic
human rights. Following his arrest, state-affiliated media released a
video purporting to show Narooie confessing to membership in a militia
group. In 2023, human rights activists in Iran documented 80 instances
of forced confessions.>>

<<Man Sentenced to Death Over of Killing Iranian Filmmaker Mehrjui
An Iranian court has sentenced a man to capital punishment and three
others to long-term imprisonment over the killing of renowned filmmaker
Dariush Mehrjui and his wife. Mehrjui, an 83-year-old director
associated with the Iranian new wave of cinema, was stabbed to death
along with his wife Vahideh Mohammadifar in October 2023 at their home
near Tehran. The judiciary's Mizan Online website said on February 12
that the main suspect in the case was found guilty of <premeditated
murder> and sentenced to death in accordance with the Islamic law of
retribution, known as the <qisas> law. Mizan quoted the chief justice of
Alborz province as saying that the application of the retribution law
came at the request of Mehrjui's family. The convicted killer, who was
arrested days after the attack, was a former employee of Mehrjui who
<had a grudge against the deceased due to financial issues,> the
judiciary has said. The three other defendants charged over their roles
in planning and assisting the murder received sentences ranging from
eight to 36 years in prison, Mizan reported, adding that the verdicts
can be appealed before the Supreme Court.>>

<<Kurdish Cross-Border Porter Killed in West Iran
Iranian border forces have shot and killed a 20-year-old Kurdish porter,
or kolbar, near the Sardab border area in western Kurdistan province.
According to the Kordpa news website, Sivan Sahihi, from the nearby
village of Balakeh, died from his injuries after being shot without
warning on February 11. Kordpa, citing an unnamed source, also reported
that Iranian forces detained and tortured two other kolbars in the
Hengehjal border region on February 9. The report said the two men,
named Yousef and Farzad, were shot at close range with a shotgun after
being arrested. The kolbars are porters who haul goods on their backs
across the borders of Iran and over long distances, mostly in the
impoverished, mountainous Kurdish areas adjacent to Iraq, to make a
living. The authorities label kolbars as <smugglers,> but human rights
organizations maintain that their activity is a form of survival for
many men living in impoverished border regions where economic
opportunities are scarce. Human rights groups documented 299 deaths and
injuries among kolbars in West Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, and Kermanshah
provinces in 2023. The causes included direct fire by the military
forces, blizzards, cold weather and falls from mountains and heights.>>

Opinion by G. d'A.: For months now I'm very aware of the Kolbars living
under impoverished conditions at the borders of Iran and hunted by
raisis' regime and too often heinously killed or wounded and I do feel
hurt at heart knowing how they suffer. But cryfreedom.net is an outlet
to support the woman-led revolution in Iran and choices must be made
concerning the topics I report about. Still, from here on I'll include
reports about their struggles but in this I highly recommend to bookmark
the Hengaw organisation for Human Rights at

available in 5 languages incl. Arabic and Kurdish. Thank you on behalf
of the Kolbars.

Sherko Hejazi
Hengaw Organisation for Human Right - 12 Feb 2024
<<Saqqez Football Association Head Sentenced to Over Six Years in Prison
Sherko Hejazi, a prominent civil activist and the head of the football
association in Saqqez, has been handed a harsh sentence of 6 years and 1
month in prison by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Additionally, he faces travel restrictions and censorship regarding
writing about government forces killed during the <Jin, Jiyan, Azadi>
movement. According to reports received by the Hengaw Organization for
Human Rights, Sherko Hejazi was convicted by the Saqqez Revolutionary
Court, led by Chief Judge Javad Mostafaei. He received a 3-year,
6-month, and 1-day sentence for <participation in plotting and
conspiracy against internal security> and an additional 31-month
sentence for <membership in opposing groups,> resulting in a cumulative
punishment of 6 years, 1 month, and 17 days of imprisonment. The
harshest part of the verdict, specifically 3 years, 6 months, and 1 day,
will be immediately enforced, taking into account previous days of
detention. Hejazi is also subjected to a 2-year travel ban. Furthermore,
according to article 7 of the revised 2020 penal code, two-thirds of the
most severe punishment may be suspended for 3 years under specific
conditions, including non-interaction with detainees related to the
commemoration anniversary of state-sponsored killings and regular
reporting to the intelligence office, along with completing three
educational courses on ethics and religion. Notably, the verdict
mandates Hejazi to write a biography of a government oppressive force
killed during the <women, life, freedom> movement, accompanied by his
personal interpretation, to be published in influential local media.
Sherko Hejazi was brutally assaulted during a raid on his workplace at <Shohada>
street in Saqqez by intelligence services personnel on September 11,
2023. He was released on December 17, 2023, on bail pending legal
proceedings. During his detention, Hejazi was denied legal
representation and subjected to severe torture to extract a forced
confession. Last week, Hengaw reported that due to pressure from
security entities, Hejazi resigned as the head of the football
association, leading to collective resignations from other members in
protest.>>
