<<Kongra Star: Women will not take a step back from their struggle for
freedom
"Women will not take a step back from their struggle for freedom,"
Kongra Star said in a written statement condemning the killing of Kerem
Ehmed in a Turkish drone attack near Tishreen Dam on Wednesday.
News Center- A Turkish drone attack targeted a civilian convoy heading
from the Raqqa, Jazira, Tabqa and Euphrates cantons of North and East
Syria to the Tishreen Dam to protest the attacks of the Turkish state
and Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) on the dam on Wednesday,
killing five civilians, including Kerem Ehmed, one of the managers of
the Zenubiya Women's Community, and injuring 15 civilians. "The attacks
of the Turkish state on women in North and East Syria are human rights
violations," Kongra Star said in a written statement on Thursday,
stressing that Kerem Ehmed was one of the managers of the Zenûbiya
Women's Community. "Martyr Kerem made great efforts to build a society
based on democracy, justice and equality. This massacre is a crime
against humanity, an attempt to silence women. The silence of the
international community against rights violations of the Turkish state
poses a threat to regional security and it will pave the way for Turkiye
to commit more crimes." >>

Sakine Cansız commemorated
Jinha - Womens News Agency - January 9, 2025
<<Sakine Cansız commemorated in Dersim
Sakine Cansız (Sara), a Kurdish female politician who was murdered in
Paris on January 9, 2013 along with two Kurdish women, was commemorated
in Dêrsim on Thursday.
Dersim- A commemoration ceremony was held at the building of the
Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) in Dêrsim for Sakine
Cansız (Sara), a Kurdish female politician, who was murdered in Paris on
January 9, 2013. At the commemoration, DEM Party Dersim MP Ayten Kordu
made a speech. After the massacre in Paris, Abdullah Öcalan said, "This
is a second Dersim massacre." Recalling the words of Abdullah Ocalan,
Ayten Kordu said, "Comrade Sakine played an important role in the
struggle for freedom. Thanks to her, this struggle continues today.
Comrade Sakine always said, 'My Whole Life Was a Struggle'. She always
struggled against the deniable mindset that aimed to destroy and
annihilate the Kurdish people. She sacrificed her life for this
struggle, enlightening our path. The struggle of not only our Comrade
Sakine Cansız but also our five comrades has an important place in the
Kurdish women's freedom struggle."
'We will maintain their struggle'
Ayten Kordu also said that they were determined to maintain the struggle
of the murdered women. "We must struggle more. Today, the isolation
imposed on Mr. Abdullah Ocalan has been partially lifted. We have a
responsibility to maintain their struggle in all facets of life." After
her speech, DEM Party Van MP Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyigit also made a speech
on the massacre that took place in Paris on January 9, 2013. "Since
then, a political warfare has been implemented against the Kurdish
women. Many of our friends such as Hevrin Khalaf were murdered. We will
not allow the perpetrators to go unpunished and we will struggle for
this." In her speech, Gulcan Kaçmaz Sayyigit also commented on the
ongoing attacks on North and East Syria and the killing of two Kurdish
journalists, Cihan Bilgin and Nazım Daştan. "This system does not allow
us to practice our language, our religion or to mourn. We must embrace
this struggle by knowing this." "The state has a mindset aiming to
prevent women's struggle for freedom," said Berivan Bahçeci,
Spokesperson of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Women's Council. "It
(the state) does not want women to organize themselves. The murder of
our female comrades in Paris, in the heart of Europe, is the
continuation of this mindset. Many women such as Nagihan Akarsel, Hero
Bahaddin and Gulistan Tara were targeted and murdered. We commemorate
all women who lost their lives while struggling for freedom. We will
maintain their struggle. We will maintain the struggle of Sakine Cansız,
who said, 'My Whole Life Was a Struggle'." >>

Turkey blocks social media accounts
Medyanews - January 6, 2025
<<Turkey blocks social media accounts of Kurdish press, contrary to 'normalisation'
rhetoric
In a striking contradiction to claims of democratisation, the Turkish
government has restricted access to accounts belonging to the Kurdish
and opposition media outlets Mezopotamya Ajansı, Jin News, Yeni Yaşam,
and SiyasiHaber on X, formerly Twitter, raising serious concerns about
press freedom and the public's access to unbiased information. As if to
highlight the ongoing suppression of press freedom in Turkey, the
government has imposed access bans on the X (formerly Twitter) accounts
of several prominent Kurdish and independent media outlets, including
Mezopotamya Ajansı @Maturkce , Jin News @jinnewsturkce , Yeni Yaşam @yeniyasamgazete
, and SiyasiHaber @SiyasiHaberOrg . The restrictions, imposed without
explanation, come as the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and
its partner, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), promote a narrative
of democratisation and Kurdish-Turkish brotherhood as part of a
so-called <normalisation> process. On 27 December, access to Mezopotamya
Ajansı's X account, which has 263,000 followers, and its YouTube
channel, with 148,000 subscribers, was blocked, along with its domain
name, mezopotamyaajansi40.com. Jin News, Yeni Yaşam, and SiyasiHaber
faced similar arbitrarily applied restrictions, including Yeni Yaşam's
website being blocked twice in the past month and its Instagram account
restricted. These actions stand in sharp contrast to the governments
stated vision of a transition to democracy, raising concerns on press
freedom and citizens' right to access unbiased information. Siyasi
Habers website was blocked by a ruling from Ankara's Criminal Court of
Peace No.10, a decision widely criticised for its apparent arbitrary
nature.>>

<<TJK-E calls for participation in protests on January 9-11
The Kurdish Women's Movement in Europe (TJK-E) has released a written
statement, calling for participation in protests to be held on January 9
and January 11, the anniversary of the Paris massacres.
News Center- The Kurdish Women's Movement in Europe (TJK-E) has released
a written statement, calling for participation in protests to be held on
January 9 and January 11 with the motto, "The murderers are known, why
does France remain silent?". "We have entered a new year of struggle by
following in the footsteps of many revolutionary women such as Sara,
Rojbin, Ronahi and Evin," said the statement. "We remember the martyrs
in Paris, especially comrade Sakine Cansız (Sara), who led the great
freedom march of not just a movement or a people, but also a century."
Sakine Cansız (Sara), one of the founders of the PKK, Fidan Dogan (Rojbin),
Paris Representative of the Kurdistan National Congress (KNK), and Leyla
Şaylemez (Ronahî) were murdered in Paris on January 9, 2013. "The First
Paris Massacre, which took place on January 9, 2013, was the beginning
of assassination-style attacks against the Kurdish Freedom Movement, and
specifically the Kurdish Women's Movement. Since then, pioneering
Kurdish women have been targeted in Europe and all four parts of
Kurdistan." Emphasizing that Kurdish women in Europe have been
struggling for justice and accountability for 12 years, the statement
said, "The identities and the addresses of the perpetrators have been
known since the first day. No trial has been started although it has
been documented that the massacre was committed by the Turkish state and
the MIT (National Intelligence Organization of Turkiye). This paved the
way for the Second Paris Massacre. Impunity has encouraged the Turkish
state to commit more massacres.
"As every year, we will organize protests across Europe, especially in
Paris, on January 9. On January 9 at 11 am, a march will be organized
from the Ahmet Kaya Kurdish Cultural Center in Paris, where Emine Kara (Evin
Goyi), artist Mir Perwer (Mehmet Şirin Aydın) and patriot Abdullah Kızıl
were killed in a gun attack, to the Centre d'Information sur le
Kurdistan. On the same day, protests will be held in front of French
Consulates in other European cities."
March on January 11
According to the statement, a march will be organized at the Gare du
Nord on January 19, 2024 at 10 AM. In the statement, the TJK-E calls on
all Kurdish people, women's organizations, socialist and democratic
people in Europe to participate in the protests and marches to be
organized from January 9 and January 11.>>

Women journalists in Makhmour
Jinha - Womens News Agency - January 6, 2025 - by NUPELDA DENIZ
<<Journalists in Makhmour condemn closure of women's organizations
"We will keep pursuing the truth and being the voices of women," said
women journalists in Makhmour, condemning the closure of four women's
organizations in Sulaymaniyah.
Makhmour- The security forces (Asayish) raided the buildings of the
Gizingi Berbeyan, a media production company, the Kurdistan Free Women's
Movement (RJAK), Nweger Culture and Art Center and the Merziye
Organization in Sulaymaniyah on December 31 and closed down these
organizations. "We will keep pursuing the truth," said women journalists
in the Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour refugee camp).
Women's organizations targeted
Journalist Qeder Kar condemned the closure of the women's organizations
and said, "As women journalists in Makhmour, we condemn the closure of
women's organizations in Sulaymaniyah and express our support to them.
The Iraqi government and Kurdistan Region government do nothing for
women and women's rights but they target women's organizations. This
shows the hostility of these governments against women and women's
rights. The patriarchal laws increase gender-based violence in Iraq and
Southern Kurdistan. Their aim is to silence women and destroy women's
rights." Recalling the killing Gulistan Tara and Hero Bahadin, two women
journalists in a Turkish drone strike in Sulaymaniyah on August 23,
2024, Qeder Kar said, "Journalist Suleyman Ahmed has been imprisoned by
the KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) for over a year. All women and
people leading their society are targeted. The closure of Gizingî
Berbeyan, a media production company producing TV programs about women
for seven years, shows the misogyny of the governments. The policies of
detention, arrest and killing are the policies of the Iraqi government
and the Kurdistan Region government. Their policies aim to silence women
but they will not be able to silence women. We will keep pursuing the
truth and being the voices of women."
'Women are targeted because they aim to build a free society'
Journalist Şilan Bilen also condemned the closure of the women's
organizations in Sulaymaniyah and said, "The Iraqi government and the
Kurdistan Region government attack women's organizations and women
leading society every year. Women are targeted because they aim to build
a free society. In the Kurdistan Region, journalists are detained,
arrested and killed. The aim of these attacks is to block women from
participating in all facets of life. Despite all the attacks, as women
journalists, we will keep doing journalism."
'Silence will pave the way for more attacks on women'
Şilan Bilen called on everyone to support the closed women's
organizations and said, "Silence will pave the way for more attacks on
women. We call on everyone to speak out against the attacks targeting
women's rights. As women journalists in Makhmour, we support our
colleagues and we will always stand with them." >>

Tunisian women demand more awareness-raising activities
Jinha - Womens News Agency - January 6, 2025 - by IHLAS HAMRUNI
<<'Awareness-raising activities are needed to prevent violence against
women'
Tunisian women demand more awareness-raising activities and education
programs be carried out to prevent violence against women "because
Tunisia has laws protecting women's rights and women are unaware of
these laws."
Tunisia- Globally, women are subjected to all forms of violence due to
the patriarchal mindset and the failure of the authorities in preventing
gender-based violence and the policy of impunity. In the Middle Eastern
countries suffering wars and conflicts, women are subjected to many
rights violations. Tunisia, one of the Middle Eastern countries, has
long been seen as a pioneer for women's rights. Although the country has
laws on women's rights, violence against women is on the rise due to
ineffective implementation of the laws. NuJINHA spoke to Tunisian women
about the increase in gender-based violence in the country.
'Awareness-raising activities are insufficient'
Badia Kadri thinks that awareness-raising activities in the central and
southern parts of Tunisia are insufficient. "Awareness-raising
activities are carried out in Tunisia, changing the patriarchal mindset.
Women now speak out against gender-based violence, especially domestic
violence more. Women need more awareness-raising activities to prevent
violence against women."
'Women are unaware of laws'
Afifa Hani, one woman from Tunisia's Sidi Bouzid city, spoke about
women's struggle against gender-based violence. "Women do their best to
defend their rights and fight against gender-based violence thanks to
awareness-raising activities. Awareness-raising activities carried out
by NGOs are important to ensure that women know and defend their rights
because Tunisia has laws protecting women's rights; however, women are
unaware of these laws." Enas Omri, another woman from Tunisia's Sidi
Bouzid city, thinks that one of the reasons for the increase in violence
against women in Tunisia is that women do not know their rights. "Women
do not know the laws protecting womens rights. Women survivors of
violence do not report violence because they do not know anything about
the law combating violence against women and legal procedures. More
awareness-raising activities and education programs must be carried out
to combat violence against women and change the patriarchal mindset in
society." >>

<<Turkish court ruling upholding acquittals in Tahir Elçi murder draws
sharp criticism
The court ruling upholding the acquittals of police officers in the
murder of Kurdish lawyer and human rights activist Tahir Elçi has drawn
widespread criticism, highlighting concerns about impunity and judicial
flaws in Turkey. Reactions have poured in following the decision of the
Diyarbakır Court of Appeal to uphold the acquittal of three police
officers in the high-profile murder case of Tahir Elçi. The ruling,
which backs the earlier decision of Diyarbakır High Criminal Court No
10, has been widely condemned by politicians and human rights lawyers.
Prominent Kurdish lawyer and human rights activist Tahir Elçi was
fatally shot on 28 November 2015 during a press conference in front of
Diyarbakır's historic Four-Legged Minaret, having just called for an end
to violence and the protection of cultural heritage. The trial, which
began four years after his murder, has been plagued by allegations of
irregularities, including delays in investigation of the crime scene and
a palpable reluctance to question police officers as suspects.
A spokeswoman for the Peoples' Democratic Congress (HDK) Meral Danış
Beştaş criticised the verdict, describing it as part of a "gradual
mechanism of impunity". She vowed to continue the fight for justice,
saying, "This case is not over. Those responsible will be held
accountable." Similarly, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) co-chair Saliha
Aydeniz rejected the verdict, calling it a "mockery of justice" and
vowing to challenge the systemic impunity in Elçi's case. Republican
People's Party (CHP) MP for Diyarbakır Sezgin Tanrıkulu said "to those
who say, 'There is no Kurdish issue'," that Elçi's murder "in broad
daylight in the middle of Diyarbakır" was a clear illustration of the
existence of the Kurdish issue, as well as being a symbol of Turkey's
long-standing crisis of justice. "The streets of Diyarbakır witnessed
this political murder. Those who seek justice often become victims
themselves," he said. The verdict also drew sharp criticism from legal
experts and activists. Mahsun Batı, president of the Tahir Elçi
Foundation*, condemned the decision, citing fundamental flaws in the
judicial process. "We will take this case to the Constitutional Court,"
Batı declared, stressing the need for accountability both of the
perpetrators themselves and those who shield them. A former chair of the
Diyarbakır Bar Association Ahmet Ozmen denounced the verdict as the
final act of a "theatrical trial". "The hands behind Elçi's murder
remain in the shadows, but our struggle will not stop until the truth is
revealed," Ozmen said. Elçi's murder took place during a volatile period
in southeast Turkey, marked by the collapse of a peace process between
the Turkish state and Kurdish political actors, following which the
state conducted widespread military operations and imposed curfews in
Kurdish towns, where violence claimed many lives. On the day of his
death, Elçi had called for an end to such hostilities, only to be shot
dead shortly afterwards. Observers have noted that the investigation
into his killing lacked independence and transparency, with key evidence
overlooked and suspects shielded from scrutiny. Critics argue that the
judicial response to Elçi's murder reflects wider patterns of impunity
and political interference in Turkey's judiciary, and underlines the
systemic challenges to justice in the country. This latest verdict
highlights the ongoing struggle for justice in cases of political
violence in Turkey. Tahir Elçi, who dedicated his career to defending
human rights and exposing impunity, remains a symbol of resistance to
these systemic problems. Established in 2019 in Diyarbakır by Elçi's
wife Turkan Elçi and others, the Tahir Elçi Foundation aims to honour
the legacy of the assassinated Bar Association President by promoting
justice, advocating for human rights and fostering a culture of
tolerance and unity across society.>>

<<A decade after genocide, Iraq's Yazidis make bittersweet return to
Sinjar
Ten years after the genocide perpetrated against the Yazidis by the
Islamic State group in Iraq's Sinjar region, tens of thousands of
displaced survivors are returning home. But their homecoming is
bittersweet, as the atrocities have left indelible wounds. FRANCE 24's
Marie-Charlotte Roupie reports. On the morning of August 3, 2014, the
Islamic State group launched a highly coordinated attack on the Yazidi
community in the northwestern Iraqi region of Sinjar. Faced with this
offensive, the population had few choices: convert, flee or die. In the
space of a few weeks, more than 5,000 people were killed, while the
captured women and children were enslaved. Among them was Rayhan, now
24, who has finally found her brother again and settled with him in
Sinjar. But this young Yazidi, like many survivors, is hoping to leave
Iraq as soon as possible. In many villages, returning to live in this
war-torn region of northwestern Iraq still means living among ruined
houses, lunar landscapes and the sad memory of those who are gone. A
decade after the genocide, some 2,600 people are still missing and many
mass graves have still not been excavated. Unanswered questions weigh
heavily on those who have chosen to return home. An estimated 350,000
Yazidis fled during the genocide. Since January 2024, between 130,000
and 150,000 of them have returned to Sinjar, amid pressure from Baghdad
to close the internally displaced persons (IDP) camps in Iraqi
Kurdistan. Although life is gradually returning to Sinjar, the fear of a
new genocide still looms large and the wounds of 2014 are far from
healed.>>

<<Hunger in the Arab region reaches a new height as challenges
intensify, says UN report
Hunger in the Arab region reaches a new height as challenges intensify,
says a report launched by UN agencies on Wednesday.
News Center- Hunger in the Arab region worsened amid deepening crises in
2023, according to a UN report launched on Wednesday by the Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agriculture
Development (IFAD), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the
World Food Programme (WFP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the
United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA).
"In 2023, 66.1 million people, approximately 14 percent of the
population in the Arab region, faced hunger," the report says,
highlighting that access to adequate food remains elusive for millions.
"Around 186.5 million people - 39.4 percent of the population - faced
moderate or severe food insecurity, an increase of 1.1 percentage points
from the previous year. Alarmingly, 72.7 million people experienced
severe food insecurity." The report's analysis shows that conflict is
the main driver of food insecurity and malnutrition in the region.
Economic challenges, high income inequalities, and climate extremes also
play significant roles. Rising food prices have worsened the crisis. In
2023, undernourishment rates in conflict-affected countries soared to
26.4%, which is four times higher than the 6.6% in non-conflict areas.
"Tragically, food security and nutrition indicators are projected to
deteriorate further due to ongoing conflicts coupled with persistent
droughts across many parts of the region."
The report also highlights that economic access to healthy diets remains
a critical issue, affecting over one-third of the population in the Arab
region.
"In 2022, new food price data and methodological improvements revealed
that 151.3 million people could not afford a healthy diet.
Conflict-affected countries experienced the highest rates, with 41.2% of
their populations struggling to afford a healthy diet." >>
