YPJ The Women’s Protection Units fighters

Hadeel Muhammad
Jinha - Womens News Agency - February 24, 2025 - by ZEYNEP XELİF
<<Woman of Deir ez-Zor: The resistance on the Tishreen Dam will continue
“The resistance on the Tishreen Dam will continue until the attacks stop,” said Hadeel Muhammad, coordinating member of the Zenubya Women’s Community in Deir ez-Zor.
Deir Ez-Zor- The attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions on the Tishreen Dam continue while people from all parts of North and East Syria have been holding a civilian vigil on the dam against the attacks since January 8, 2025. “We will defend our region at all costs,” Hadeel Muhammad, coordinating member of the Zenubya Women’s Community in Deir ez-Zor, told NuJINHA. Dozens of women from different cities of North and East Syria have been leading the resistance (vigil) on the Tishreen Dam, Hadeel Muhammad emphasized. “Women from different parts of North and East Syria have joined the vigil to resist the ongoing attacks by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions in order to protect their main energy sources. As women of Deir ez-Zor, we are a party to this resistance in order to protect the gains and the rights of all ethnic and religious groups in the region.” Any threat to the Tishreen Dam will lead to a humanitarian disaster, Hadeel Muhammad stressed, adding: “If the dam collapses, thousands of people in North and East Syria will be left without water and power. The collapse of the dam will pose a threat to thousands. Women from different parts of North and East Syria have joined the vigil and they are determined to protect their gains. We will resist the Turkish occupation to the end and support our fighters.”
‘We will not take a step back’
Hadeel Muhammad recalled the Turkish drone attacks targeting civilian convoys heading to the dam and the civilians holding the vigil on the dam.
“Targeting and attacking civilians is a war crime. As women of Deir ez-Zor, we will keep resisting and we will not take a step back from our resistance. Women of Deir ez-Zor suffered a lot when the city was controlled by ISIS. Therefore, we will resist to the end.”
‘Women are determined’
Women are determined to “resist despite all the attacks and the threats,” said Hadeel Muhammad. “They have been waging a resistance to defend their region and protect their gains. Women of North and East Syria will defend their revolution, their will and their region.”>>

Dęrik - YPJ Commander
Jinha - Womens News Agency - February 24, 2025 - by DILOVAN ASMÎN
<<YPJ commander: Victory will be for the people of North and East Syria
“We will not allow the occupation and victory will be ours, the people of North and East Syria,” said Kurdistan Dęrik, one of the commanders of the Women's Defense Units (YPJ).
Tishreen- The fighters of the Women's Defense Units (YPJ) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the people of North and East Syria have been waging an unprecedented resistance the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions on the Tishreen Dam since December 8, 2024.
“We are determined to achieve success,” Kurdistan Dęrik, one of the commanders of the YPJ, told NuJINHA.
Kurdistan Dęrik first commemorated those who lost their lives while defending the Tishreen Dam, the Qereqozax Bridge and the Dayr Hafir, a city in Aleppo. “We will fight to realize the dreams of our martyrs. We also salute the resistance of the people of North and East Syria, who have joined the resistance (vigil) on the Tishreen Dam. We draw our strength from our people. As the fighters of the YPJ and the SDF, we always stand with our people.”
‘The resistance has impressed women all over the world’
Commenting on the vigil on the Tishreen Dam, Kurdistan Dęrik said, “The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions have been attacking the Tishreen Dam by using heavy weapons, warplanes and drones for more than two months. We respond to their attacks and they have to withdraw. “The Turkish state should know very well that an unprecedented resistance led by women has been taking place in North and East Syria for 13 years. This resistance has impressed women all over the world. We have vowed to our people and our martyrs that we will fight until the last drop of blood. We are not war lovers but we will fight with all our strength if there is an attack on our existence.” Kurdistan Dęrik told us that they fought to protect their people against the ongoing attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions. “As the children of this region, our duty and responsibility is to defend our region, our homeland. The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions have committed crimes against humanity in North and East Syria. They aim to invade our region but this region belongs to the people. We protect our people and fight against all threats against our people.”
‘No one can break the strong will of the people’
The people holding the vigil on the Tishreen Dam have a “will of steel”, Kurdistan Dęrik emphasized. “The Turkish state must know very well that it cannot invade our region because the people of North and East Syria have a will of steel. No one can break their strong will. We will continue our struggle and resistance to defend our region and protect our people. We will not allow the occupation and victory will be ours, the people of North and East Syria.”>>

Women of Kobanę resisting
Jinha - Womens News Agency - February 20, 2025 - by ĘLVÎN MIHEMED
<<Women of Kobanę resisting on Tishreen Dam: We will resist to the end
“We will resist to the end,” said the women of Kobanę, who have joined the civilian vigil started on the Tishreen Dam to protect their source of energy and region.
Kobanę- On December 8, 2024, the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions started attacking the Tishreen Dam and the Qereqozax Bridge in North and East Syria. Since then, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Women's Defense Units (YPJ) have been waging a resistance against the attacks to defend the dam and protect the people of the region. Since January 8, 2025, the people of North and East Syria have been holding an alternate-civilian vigil on the dam to protect their source of energy.
NuJINHA spoke to the women of Kobanę, who have joined the vigil to protect their source of energy and region.
“The Turkish state has been targeting and attacking civilians by using its warplanes and drones,” said Almaz Hiso. “Many civilians have been killed and injured in the Turkish strikes until now. Civilians join the vigil on the dam to protect their water and source of energy. This dam belongs to the people of this region.”
‘Their silence shows their collaboration’
Almaz Hiso criticized the international silence against the ongoing Turkish attacks on the dam. “Their silence shows their collaboration. Does not the international community see the attacks targeting civilians? They see but they remain silent when the Kurdish people are in question. Therefore, we, as the people of the region, started a vigil to protect our dam, our water and our source of energy. We will stand with our fighters to the end. We will always protect our dam.”
‘We must protect our lands and water whatever the consequences’
“Today, our children and our fighters have been waging a historical resistance to defend their lands,” said Necmę Birahîm. “For about two months, we have been holding a vigil on the dam to protect our lands, our water and our source of energy. However, Turkish drones keep targeting civilian convoys heading to the dam. We know that the aim of the attacks is to intimidate the people and to kill the Kurdish people. We must protect our lands and water whatever the consequences. The Turkish state will be defeated as ISIS was defeated in Kobanę. We will keep protecting our dam and supporting the fighters, the children of this region.”
‘We will never leave our country’
Necmę Birahîm emphasized that the ongoing attacks would never scare them. “We will never leave our region, our country. We will stand with our fighters and resist to the end. This region and this dam belong to us.”>>

Women of Deir-Zor daring to defend
Jinha - Womens News Agency - February 18, 2025
<<'If the Tishreen Dam collapses, it will affect the whole region'
“If the Tishreen Dam collapses, it will affect the whole region,” warned women, who have joined the civilian vigil held on the Tishreen Dam against the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions for more than 40 days.
News Center- The civilian vigil on the Tishreen Dam started against the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions has continued for more than 40 days. NuJINHA spoke to some women joining the vigil on the dam.
‘We will resist until we die’
“The unity and strong stance of the people bring this resistance into view,” said Manal Fahri, member of the Council of Martyrs Families in Qamishlo (Qamishli). We will never give up resisting. The gains we have achieved in Rojava are the gains achieved by the blood of our martyrs and the resistance of our military forces and our people. The resistance of the people on the Tishreen Dam continues despite the ongoing attacks. We will resist until we die.”
‘The Tishreen Dam is the lifeblood of the region’
Zarifa Al-Sayed, member of the Zenubya Women’s Community, spoke about how the dam is important for the people of the region. “The Tishreen Dam is the lifeblood and the primary energy source of the region since it provides water and power to the region. Warplanes and drones target the dam and this may cause the dam to collapse. If the dam collapses, it will turn into a real disaster that threatens the lives of millions of people. Civilians join the vigil to protect their dam against the ongoing attacks.”
‘The resistance of the people is very important’
“The resistance on the Tishreen Dam shows the determination and struggle of the civilians against the ongoing Turkish attacks,” said Dhikirat Al-Mousa, another member of the Zenubya Women’s Community. “Despite all the attacks, civilians continue to protect their dam and support the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The solidarity of the people is now very important. People from all ages join the resistance on the Tishreen Dam. The resistance of the people is very important.”
Call on international organizations
Zarka Tayyar, a human rights activist from Kobanę, called on international human rights organizations to take immediate action against the ongoing attacks on the dam. “For years, the Syrian people have suffered from the civil war and difficult living conditions. Now, they deserve to live freely in their country. However, they still face attacks. The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions have intensified their attacks on North and East Syria, especially the Tishreen Dam, committing rights violations. Since the start of the Rojava Revolution, the Turkish state has carried out attacks on North and East Syria. Since the fall of the regime, it has intensified its attacks. The Turkish attacks on the Tishreen Dam continue while the people of the region keep resisting the attacks. The attacks of the Turkish state on energy resources and civilian infrastructure in the region is a violation of international laws and conventions. If the Tishreen Dam collapses due to the attacks, it will affect the whole region. The Turkish attacks on the dam have deprived approximately 413,000 civilians of water and power and threatened hundreds. International human rights organizations must take immediate action against the ongoing attacks on the dam.”>>

Jineology - January 24, 2025 - by Statement of the Andrea Wolf Institute of Jineolojî Academy
<<Press Release – Statement About The Recent Events At Tishreen Dam Tishreen Dam: A Symbol Of Resistance, Peace, And The Struggle For Freedom
Since January 8, 2025, people of all different cultural and religious communities from across the regions of Kobanę, Tebqa, Reqqa, Heseke, Qamishlo, Amude, Tirbespiye, Derik, and Derazor have joined to peaceful convoys to the Tishreen Dam. Thousands of people, including members of the Andrea Wolf Institute of the Jineoloji Academy, have joined this peaceful mobilization to express their firm stance against the ongoing attacks by the Turkish army and its allied Syrian National Army (SNA) mercenaries. The continuing vigil at Tishreen Dam stands as a peaceful advocacy for the protection of life, livelihoods, and the democratic autonomy of the people in North and East Syria, urging the international community to act in defence of human rights, and environmental protection. The Tishreen Dam is a vital lifeline, providing water and electricity to hundreds of thousands of people in northern Syria. The ongoing airstrikes by Turkish army forces, involving drones and warplanes, have severely disrupted these essential services, with particularly dire consequences for communities in the whole region including Aleppo. UNICEF reports that the damage to critical water infrastructure has left countless families without access to clean water, exacerbating an already precarious humanitarian situation. The continuing bombardments have already caused severe damage, leading to concerns of a subsequent dam break. This would lead to a catastrophic flood disaster with far reaching consequences of human life and the environment, all across regions of Syria and Iraq. Despite the continuing bombardments of the dam and surrounding areas, women, men, children, the elderly, and young people, have sustained their peaceful vigil for life. They are taking shifts of three to four days at the dam, demonstrating a profound commitment to defending their land, their resources, and the system of Democratic Autonomy that has empowered them to build a society based on women’s freedom, equality, democratic and ecological values. The message of the participants points out that “Defending Tishreen means to defend Kobanę and the Democratic Autonomy in whole North and East Syria as well as a democratic and peaceful future of Syria!” Solidarity actions and mass mobilisations to protect Tishreen are therefore taking place across the region, including demonstrations along the border in Northern Kurdistan / Turkey as well as in Europe and other parts of the world. The role of women in this resistance is particularly pivotal. Women in North and East Syria have been at the forefront of the fight for autonomy and equality, resisting patriarchal and colonial oppression alike. Women’s presence at Tishreen Dam reflects their important role in the struggle for peace and human rights. Women are not just defenders of their homes and families—they have collectively reshaped the political and social landscape of the region. Their leadership in these manifestations is a testament to their unyielding determination to preserve the democratic principles such as the co-chair principle and equal participation of women in all fields of life, institutions and decision making. By consciously taking part in and developing politics, education, economy, justice, self-defence, science, arts and culture women have allowed communities to flourish in the face of immense adversity. By standing together, women have been showing the world the power of collective resistance and the necessity of their role in securing a just future.
Repeatedly, the vigil at Tishreen Dam has been attacked by Turkish drones and warplanes. Obtained drone footage also provides evidence that civilians gathering on the dam have been deliberately targeted, underscoring the dire need for international attention and action. Yesterday, for the eleventh time, the crowd was directly bombed, resulting in the deaths of more than 20 persons and the injury of over 120 others, including two international human rights defenders, doctors, and nine journalists. More than three times ambulances of the Kurdish Red Crescent, carrying injured civilians from the dam to hospitals, were targeted by done missiles. This means many of those wounded cannot be evacuated, and are at risk of succumbing to their injuries. Furthermore many of the drone strikes were double-tap strikes, where the military launches a second attack shortly after the first, intentionally targeting rescuers and medical personnel, which is considered a war crime under international law. All these examples are war crimes and sever violation of international law and human rights committed by the Turkish government. To prevent further losses of human lives as well as an ecological and humanitarian catastrophe in the region all people and institutions need to act now. The participants of the Tishreen Dam peace vigil are now calling upon the international community to:
End the Turkish occupation in parts of North and East Syria and to cease the ongoing war and aggressions.
Investigate all war crimes, including the bombing of civilians, journalists, and the deliberate targeting of medical personnel and ambulances.
Prosecute the Turkish government for all violations international law and human rights.
Establish a No-Fly Zone over North and East Syria to prevent further aerial attacks by Turkish drones and warplanes, ensuring the protection of civilians and the region’s vital infrastructure.
The steadfast determination of the people at Tishreen Dam reflects their unity, resilience, and commitment to peace and democracy. As they persist in their pursuit of justice, it is imperative that the international community heed their call and stand in solidarity with them. Now is the time for decisive action to support their rights and aspirations for a peaceful and democratic future.

<<YPJ fighters taking part in Tishreen Dam Resistance: We will succeed!
“We will not allow the enemy to enter our country. We will succeed,” said the YPJ fighters taking part in Tishreen Dam Resistance against the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions.
Tishreen- The fighters of the Women's Defense Units (YPJ), the People's Defense Units (YPG) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have shown a historical resistance against the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed armed groups on the Tishreen Dam area.
NuJINHA interviewed two YPJ members fighting at the frontline about the ongoing attacks and the resistance against the attacks.
‘We will not allow the enemy to enter our country’
“Our fight and resistance against the Turkish state and Turkish-backed armed groups continue today, too,” said Bihar Silav, an YPJ fighter from Girę Spî (Tell Abyad). “The friends of the Kurds, who support the YPG, YPJ and SDF, also support this resistance. We will not allow the enemy to enter our country and taint our lands. Everyone knows that the Turkish state aims to eliminate our forces but they (Turkish state and Turkish-backed armed groups) should know that the YPG and the YPJ will always exist and fight against them.”
‘We advance more every day’
The fighters have already broken the attacks, Bihar Silav stressed, adding: “The attacks have been repeatedly repulsed by the fighters. This causes fear among them to flee. Some of the fighters have been martyred and some have been injured while resisting the attacks. We will avenge our martyred comrades. Since the start of Operation Martyr Aziz Ereb, we have advanced more every day.”
‘We congratulate our people for their resistance’
We will resist until the end to defend our country and we will succeed, Bihar Silav emphasized. “All of our comrades follow in the footsteps of Martyr Eziz Ereb. We commemorate all of our martyrs and wish our injured comrades a quick recovery. We also send our greetings to our people and congratulate them for their resistance against the armed groups.” “Since December 23, I have taken part in the Operation Martyr Aziz Ereb,” said Zeyneb Zîlan, an YPJ fighter and Arab woman from Aleppo. “There is an unprecedented resistance here. As an Arab woman, I take part in this resistance. We will liberate everywhere occupied by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed armed groups.” Zeyneb Zîlan also talked about the claims of the Turkish state saying that they control the Tishreen Dam. “The Tishreen Dam is not controlled by the Turkish state. Our operation continues.”>>
