<<Van Newroz calls for free leadership and a democratic society
On 19 March 2025, tens of thousands flooded the streets of Van city to celebrate Newroz with unparalleled fervour. Organised by the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), the Free Women's Movement (TJA), and the Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party, the gathering echoed with the slogan "Free Leadership, Democratic Society." The square erupted with chants of "Long Live Leader Apo," as attendees voiced resolute support for Abdullah Öcalan. Newroz celebrations took place across southeast Turkey’s Kurdish region (Bakur) under the leadership of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), the Free Women’s Movement (TJA), and the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party. From the early hours, tens of thousands marched from the city centre, districts, and villages to Newroz Square near Van Fortress, rallying under the slogan ‘Free Leadership, Democratic Society’. Footage from Mezopotamia News Agency and Sterk TV captures the electrifying atmosphere, with chants of “Long Live Leader Apo” reverberating through the crowd. Women and youth, adorned in vibrant Kurdish attire, infused the celebration with colour, while green, red, and yellow flags waved defiantly. The event opened with a moment of silence, followed by speeches from DEM Party co-chair for Van city Veysi Dilekci and DBP Van co-chair Gonul Uzunay, who reaffirmed their unwavering support for Öcalan’s call for peace and for his physical freedom. Artist Fikret Goyi then took the stage, igniting the ceremonial Newroz fire amid roaring cheers. Van Metropolitan Municipality Co-Mayor Neslihan Şedal, who was replaced by a government-appointed trustee in 2024, underscored the city’s enduring spirit of resistance, declaring:
“The people of Van have never bowed to oppression and will stand firmly behind Öcalan’s call for peace.”
Co-Mayor Abdullah Zeydan echoed this, stressing that Öcalan’s paradigm represents a path to liberation for all peoples.
Kurds will not be broken by massacres
Sinan Çiftyürek, a member of the Kurdistan Communist Party (KKP) Central Executive Committee, delivered a powerful speech condemning the massacres against Kurdish people, and sending a message of defiance: “The Kurdish people will never be broken by massacres. Those who seek to crush us will fail. Long before today, Mr Öcalan called for a resolution to the Kurdish question, and it is essential that everyone stands behind this call. Following his appeal, an agreement was forged in Syria, laying the groundwork for Kurdish unity. We fully support this agreement as a vital step for the Kurdish people to move forward together.” Fatma Abay, an activist from the Free Women’s Movement (TJA), underscored the global resonance of the women’s struggle:
“Through women’s resistance, the philosophy of ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ (Woman, Life, Freedom) has spread across the world. Today, we celebrate Newroz in honour of Abdullah Öcalan, the Kurdish People’s Leader and the visionary behind this philosophy. We fully embrace Mr Öcalan’s message, particularly his words: ‘The women’s issue runs deeper than the Kurdish issue itself.’ This truth must be understood by all.” “To build a new era, we must face and dismantle the systemic violence targeting women. Mr Öcalan urges us to take charge of our future, and women must lead this fight,” she added. The 2025 Newroz celebrations in Turkey’s Kurdistan have ignited immense enthusiasm across all parts of Kurdistan, driven by the imprisoned Kurdish leader’s call for a peaceful resolution to the Kurdish question and an end to the past year’s cycle of violence against Kurds.>>

<<TJK-E: We build the bridge of freedom from March 8 to Newroz
“We build the bridge of freedom from March 8 to Newroz with the joy of spring,” the European Kurdish Women's Movement (TJK-E) said in a statement on Thursday.
News Center- The European Kurdish Women's Movement (TJK-E) has released a written statement, saying they would welcome Newroz with a great spirit of struggle. “For the Kurdish people, Newroz is not only the arrival of spring, but also a symbol of resistance, freedom and rebirth. This resistance led by women represents the bright path of our struggle against the patriarchal system, colonialism and all forms of oppression. The “Jin, Jiyan, Azadî” philosophy continues to be the fundamental force shaping the struggle for freedom and the process of building a democratic society, the TJK-E emphasized in the statement. “This year, we combine the women’s struggle that strengthened on International Women’s Day, March 8, with the freedom fire of Newroz. As women, we build the bridge of freedom from March 8 to Newroz with the joy of spring.” In the statement, the TJK-E called on everyone to support the international campaign demanding “freedom for Abdullah Öcalan and a political solution to the Kurdish question”. “Our strongest response to fascism and colonialism is our struggle for freedom, democracy and equality based on the paradigm of leader Apo. The spring of freedom will take root in the lives of our people along with the women's revolution. Therefore, it is time to further strengthen the fire of Newroz.
Call for mobilization for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan
“As the European Kurdish Women’s Movement, we wish a happy Newroz to everyone. We call on all women, young people and our people to flock to the streets to celebrate Newroz, strengthen the struggle for freedom, build a democratic society and mobilize for the freedom of leader Apo.”>>

<<Women ready for March 21: The fire of peace will be lit
People of Amed have already started celebrating Newroz. Women of Amed call on everyone to participate in the Newroz celebration in the city on March 21.
Amed (Diyarbakır)- This year’s Newroz has been celebrated in Northern Kurdistan and Türkiye with the motto, “Rêbertiya Azad Civaka Demokratîk/Democratic Society for Freedom”. Since the first fire of Newroz was lit in Amed’s Lice district on March 12, 2025, Newroz has been celebrated in many cities, districts and villages. In Amed, people have staged torchlight marches in the neighborhoods every night while people have celebrated Newroz in districts during the day. The celebrations have been participated in by thousands, especially women and young people. The women of Amed told NuJINHA that they would celebrate Newroz 2025 with great enthusiasm for the “Call for Peace and Democratic Society” made by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan on February 27, 2025.
‘Peace must be mutual’
“As women, we demand peace and freedom,” said Nazime Çokdalan, one of the women participating in the Newroz celebrations in Amed, calling on the Turkish authorities to take action for peace. “People are tired of war. Now, we demand peace, a peaceful life. The Turkish state must lift the isolation (imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan in the prison island of Imrali) and accept the ceasefire (declared by the PKK). The Kurdish people have demanded peace for years despite all kinds of oppression and they have already done their part for peace. Now, the Turkish state must take a step for peace. Peace must be mutual. This year, we have celebrated Newroz by demanding peace. We will light the fire of Newroz by demanding peace.”
‘Those who oppress us will be defeated’
Menice Yeni called on everyone to stand by the call made by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. “We must unite to strengthen our struggle for freedom and peace,” she said. “This call is a historic call for us. We must celebrate Newroz with the spirit of this call. I hope this year’s Newroz will be the Newroz of peace and freedom. As women, we know very well that the victory will be ours. Those who oppress us will be defeated.”
‘The Kurdish people must unite’
Maşallah Edibe drew attention to the ongoing attacks on Rojava and said, “Rojava is our redline; we will always stand by Rojava. They (Turkish state) continue to talk about war and blood while we demand peace and freedom. We always stand for unity and fraternity. They should stop their attacks (on Rojava) if they also stand for unity and fraternity. The Kurdish people must unite for peace. The state must first release all political prisoners.” Birgül Sarı told us that she would celebrate Newroz on March 21 to voice her demand for peace. “I have participated in the Newroz celebrations for 30 years. This war must end in order to end this bloodshed. Not only the Kurdish people but also all people must demand peace.”>>
