Nagihan Akarsel
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Oct. 4, 2024 - by DIREN ENGIZEK
<<Justice for Nagihan Akarsel: The murderer said he had been assigned by
the Turkish state
"At the court, the murderer said he had been assigned by the Turkish
state. We must fight for the real murderers to be brought to justice,"
said Sarah Marcha, member of the International Justice Initiative for
Nagihan Akarsel.
News Center- Nagihan Akarsel, journalist, academic, member of Jineology
Academy and editor-in-chief of Jineology Magazine, was shot dead in
Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan Region of Iraq, on October 3,2022. The murderer
was arrested at the last PUK-controlled security checkpoint at the exit
of the city of Sulaymaniyah while trying to escape to Erbil. On December
24, 2023, the murderer, a Turkish citizen named İsmail Rasim Rifat Peker,
was sentenced to death by the Court of Cassation of the Kurdistan Region
of Iraq. However, neither the public opinion nor Nagihan Akarsel's
family were informed about the investigation or the court proceedings.
In an interview with NuJINHA, Sarah Marcha, member of the International
Justice Initiative for Nagihan Akarsel and the Jineology Research Center
in Brussels, commented on the legal process of the murder of Nagihan
Akarsel. "At a time when the 'Jin jiyan azadi' protests that started in
Rojhilat Kurdistan, Nagihan Akarsel was targeted by the Türkiye’s state
intelligence agency," Sarah Marcha said. "We know very well that
pioneering women, particularly Kurdish women who have developed
themselves with the 'Jin jiyan azadi' philosophy developed by leader Apo
and Jineology, women's science, have influenced women all around the
world. Therefore, the Turkish state and male-dominated powers and states
do not want the women's revolution to develop and spread. The murder of
Nagihan Akarsel was planned and committed to prevent the women's
revolution."
'The murderer was assigned by the Turkish state'
Speaking about the International Justice Initiative for Nagihan Akarsel,
she said, "The initiative was established to demand justice for the
killings of pioneering women, especially Kurdish women, who fight for
the freedom of the Kurdish people. The policies of the Turkish state and
the occupying forces pave the way for femicide all around the world.
This initiative was established by hundreds of women and many
organizations to fight femicide. The initiative has called on
international organizations to take action in order to ensure justice
for Nagihan Akarsel. The murderer of Nagihan Akarsel was assigned by the
Turkish state, its National Intelligence Organization (MIT). As an
initiative, we demand the people and organizations behind this dirty
plan be brought to justice." Sarah Marcha also recalled that the
initiative had had a press conference last year and said, "We held a
press conference about the murder case of Nahigan Akarsel. The murderer
of Nagihan Akarsel stood trial in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. We know
very well who assigned the murderer; at the court, the murderer also
said that he had been assigned by the Turkish state to kill Nagihan
Akarsel. Despite that, no legal proceeding has been started against the
Turkish state. In addition, the trial was a closed trial. For that
reason, we cannot say that justice has been served."
'We must prevent such dirty plans'
The Turkish state has planned to kill all pioneering Kurdish women,
Sarah Marcha said, recalling the killings of Kurdish women in North and
East Syria, in Southern Kurdistan, in Europe and in Paris. "As women, we
must prevent such dirty plans. Undoubtedly, Kurdish women are pioneering
women for women all around the world. Not only Kurdish women but also
all women struggling for women’s rights are targeted by the occupying
and patriarchal forces and states.” Speaking about the murder case of
Nagihan Akarsel, she said, “This case has become the case of all women.
Throughout history, many women have been killed for demanding freedom
and their rights. Women keep resisting although they are targeted by the
patriarchal mindset."
'Women should raise their voices more'
States do not want women to revolutionize, Sarah Marcha stressed. "All
legal and bureaucratic systems of the states are also formed to prevent
women and people from getting their rights. Women should raise their
voices more, become more active and show their stance against the
patriarchal mindset in Kurdistan and all over the world. The initiative
shares all information about this case with the public opinion. We also
aim to reveal the murders of pioneering women in Kurdistan and all over
the world. We say those who target pioneering women should not go
unpunished."
International organizations have been founded by both governments and
civil society to defend human rights and women's rights, Sarah Marcha
emphasized. "Although the Turkish state is a member of the Council of
Europe and the United Nations, these organizations remain silent against
the crimes committed by the Turkish state."
'Neither the public opinion nor Nagihan Akarsel's family were informed'
"Neither the public opinion nor Nagihan Akarsel's family were informed
about the investigation or the court proceedings," Sarah Marcha
stressed. "As we know, İsmail Rasim Rifat Peker, was sentenced to death
by the Court of Cassation of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq in December
2023. However, no legal step has been taken for those who assigned this
person. The trial was a closed trial. The same thing was experienced in
Paris. Therefore, we must fight for the real murderers to be brought to
justice."
Open letter to the UN and the Council of Europe
The initiative sent an open letter to the UN, the Council of Europe and
the Iraqi government, demanding them to clarify the background of the
murder of Nagihan Akarsel, to hold those responsible accountable, to
take legal and political measures preventing further femicides and
political murders. "As the initiative, we will hold online panels and
participate in conferences and other international and national
activities about the murdering of pioneering women, also known as
political femicide."
'We must fight to bring the real murderers to justice'
Women lawyers make great efforts to bring the murder case to
international courts, Sarah Marcha indicated. "We will see what steps
will be taken. We call on all women lawyers, all women defending women's
and human rights, women artists and academics to take a firm stance in
order to achieve for comrade Nagihan and all pioneering women. We must
fight to bring the real murderers to justice." >>

<<Afghan athlete under police protection slams gender apartheid as
'crime against humanity'
FRANCE 24 spoke to Marzieh Hamidi, a former taekwondo champion for
Afghanistan who has been a refugee in France since 2021, when the
Taliban returned to power. In late August of this year, she posted a
video on social media denouncing "gender apartheid" in her home country.
Since early September, when she began receiving death threats, she has
been under police protection. "When I saw that the Taliban announced
that women are not allowed to even speak in public, I thought: it's time
to invite everyone around the world to stand with Afghan women and also
to fight against gender apartheid. So I launched #LetUsExist, because
now in Afghanistan women do not exist," Hamidi explained, referring to a
video she posted on social media in late August. "We want the world to
recognise gender apartheid as a crime against humanity and against women
in Afghanistan."
The former taekwondo champion went on to explain that her police
protection began after a subsequent interview, during which she
criticised Afghanistan's national cricket team for "normalising [the]
Taliban". She recalled that afterwards, fans from the team "started
attacking me on social media first by writing bad comments". She later
received a call from a person "shouting on me and telling me: 'I have
your address in Paris'".
Hamidi said she went on to receive calls from "Belgium, Germany, the
Netherlands, France, European countries and America", along with many
explicit threats on her life sent to her on Instagram, which led her to
turn to the French police for protection. Asked about August 15, 2021,
the day the Taliban returned to power in the wake of the chaotic US exit
from Afghanistan, Hamidi called it "a sad day for all of us. When I saw
the Taliban in the streets, I said: 'How is this possible?' It felt like
a scary movie," she recalled. "Still now, I cannot accept what
happened." The Afghan exile noted that she has "received many messages
[of support] from French people: president of the Senate, mayor of
Paris, minister of the interior and also minister of sport". But as
regards Afghanistan and the situation of Afghan women, she regretted
that "people are silent, especially women in the West". Hamidi insisted
that as human beings, it is "our duty to speak out for Afghan women and
to be their voice because they are voiceless and in the prison of the
Taliban".>>

Ocalan
The employees and activists of BATZAC, an anti-capitalist and anarchist
organization based in Catalonia, calls for support to the "Freedom for
Abdullah Ocalan and a political solution to the Kurdish question"
campaign.

the "Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan and a political solution to the Kurdish

'Isolation is a form of torture'
The conditions of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan in the prison island of
Imrali are unsustainable, said the statement. "Isolation is a form of
torture," BATZAC said, criticizing the silence of the international
authorities against Türkiye, "Their silence shows that they are a party
to this crime. In the prison island of Imrali, an aggravated isolation
has been imposed on Abdullah Ocalan, who was sentenced to life
imprisonment. For three years, he has been denied family and lawyer

conference of the Jineology Academy
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Oct. 2, 2024
<<'Jineology will light the way of women all over the world'
Jineology, women’s science, will light the way of women all over the
world, said women, who participated in the conference of the Jineology
Academy. "Our aim is to spread the 'Jin,Jiyan,Azadi' philosophy."
Hasakah- The Jineology Academy of North and East Syria held its second
conference in the city of Hasakah, Jazira Canton of North and East
Syria, between September 25-26 with the motto, "Women's Wisdom is
Updated by Jineology". NuJINHA spoke to several women participating in
the conference. "Jineology is of great importance because it is a new
science by women," said Orifan Abdi, member of the Jineology Center in
North and East Syria. Leader Ocalan writes that women should rewrite
their history and reveal their hidden truths in his book titled
Sociology of Freedom (2008). We must reveal women's role in history and
in society. We must do our best to take back the rights stolen from
women."
'We aim to strengthen women through education'
Educational programs are an important tool to achieve gender equality,
Orifan Abdi emphasized. "We attach great importance to education. Our
educational programs on many topics such as gender, free-common life,
women’s history and many more continue. We aim to strengthen women
through education. When women get to know their true nature, they will
bring a social change. Gender equality can be achieved by changing men's
mentality. Jineology is one of the gains of the women’s revolution."
'We rewrite history'
"There is definitely a criticism of the positive scientific method that
emerged at the beginning of the last century (referring to the early
20th century)," said Alya Osman, a member of the Jineology Academy. "We
do not assume that we will find a new research method. On the contrary,
we will rely on the legacy of science. We want to benefit from the
experiences of women all around the world through the history of the
Middle East and women's history and sciences. We rewrite history through
Jineology."
Distinction between subject and object
Alya Osman also talked about the importance of overcoming the
distinction between subject and object. "One of the methodological
problems is the distinction between subject and object. I mean that
every person sees herself/ himself as a subject and everything around
her/him as a material object. This approach influences every individual
in society, from the relationship between women and men, the
relationship with nature. This leads to the erasure of identity for
peoples and the deprivation of humanity from ethnic meaning and
freedom."
'Truth requires evaluation from all sides'
Alya Osman mentioned the mistake made in the methodology of separating
the sciences. "It is not possible to solve a problem without solving
problems holistically. The method of Jineology is based on evaluation
from all sides because truth requires evaluation from all sides."
'Women develop the reality of ethical society'
Alya Osman also said that they benefited from the thoughts of Kurdish
leader Abdullah Ocalan and the Kurdish Women's Freedom Movement. "Women
are those who seek the truth and develop the reality of ethical society.
Jineology is a science that will light the way of women all over the
world. Our aim is to spread the 'Jin,Jiyan,Azadi' philosophy." >>

<<Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum sworn in as first female president
The former Mexico City mayor won a landslide victory in June elections
to become Mexico's 66th - and first female - president. In a country
beset by spiraling criminal violence, President Claudia Sheinbaum says
she will use social policy to tackle crime at its roots. Claudia
Sheinbaum was sworn in Tuesday as Mexico's first woman president,
inheriting a country beset by gang violence and economic uncertainty
over controversial reforms passed by her powerful ruling party. To cries
of "Long live Claudia! Long live Mexico!" the 62-year-old former Mexico
City mayor took the oath of office and received the presidential sash in
Congress, with foreign dignitaries looking on including US First Lady
Jill Biden. Sheinbaum told cheering lawmakers that, for the first time,
"women have arrived to shape the destiny of our beautiful nation," where
around 10 women or girls are murdered every day.
She was later due to attend a celebration in Mexico City's main square
as leader of the world's most populous Spanish-speaking country, home to
129 million people, which has had 65 male presidents since independence.
Supporters began gathering from dawn on inauguration day, which
authorities declared a national holiday. "We arrived at five in the
morning," said Marta Ramirez, a housewife who came by bus from the
central city of Leon.
A woman president "understands the people better," she said. US First
Lady Jill Biden was greeted at the inauguration ceremony by Mexico's
incoming foreign secretary, Juan Ramon de la Fuente. One high-profile
absence at the ceremony was Spanish King Felipe VI, whom Sheinbaum
refused to invite, accusing him of failing to acknowledge harm caused by
colonization. In response, Spain announced it would boycott the
inauguration, despite its strong economic and historic links with
Mexico.
Popular predecessor retires
A scientist by training, Sheinbaum won a landslide victory in June
elections with a vow to continue the left-wing reform agenda of outgoing
leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a close ally. Lopez Obrador leaves
the presidential palace after six years due to the country's single-term
limit, despite an approval rating of around 70 percent, largely thanks
to his policies aimed at helping poorer Mexicans. He bequeaths Sheinbaum
the leadership of a nation where murders and kidnappings occur daily and
ultra-violent drug cartels control vast swaths of territory. Spiraling
criminal violence, much of it linked to drug trafficking and gangs, has
seen more than 450,000 people murdered in Mexico since 2006. While
Sheinbaum has pledged to stick to the outgoing president's controversial
"hugs not bullets" strategy -- using social policy to tackle crime at
its roots -- experts expect some changes in her approach. "It will be a
modified version of hugs not bullets that will be more reliant on
intelligence and therefore more effective at getting things done," said
Professor Pamela Starr, an expert on Mexico at the University of
Southern California.
Reassuring investors
The new president will also have to deal with the fallout from a row
over newly passed judicial reforms that will make Mexico the world's
only country to elect all judges by popular vote. Dozens of judicial
workers demonstrated on Tuesday morning near Congress -- the latest in
several weeks of protests. Lopez Obrador argued the reforms were needed
to clean up a "rotten" judiciary serving the interests of the political
and economic elite.
The changes, which critics argued would make it easier for politicians
and organized crime to influence the courts, upset foreign investors as
well as key trade partners the United States and Canada. Sheinbaum
sought to ally such concerns, telling investors their money "will be
safe" and pledging a "responsible fiscal policy." The United States,
Canada, and Mexico "know that economic cooperation strengthens the three
nations," she added.
Experts think Sheinbaum is likely to maintain good relations with
whoever wins the US election on November 5 -- particularly if it is
Democrat Kamala Harris, who would also be her country's first woman
president. While there will still be "some tension and friction,"
especially over migration, both countries need each other and Sheinbaum
is likely to be "much more pragmatic" than her predecessor, said Maria
Fernanda Bozmoski, deputy director of the US-based Adrienne Arsht Latin
America Center.

<<'Women must be determined to resist and not accept being commodified'
"Women must be determined to resist and not accept being commodified,"
said Azima Deniz, one of the executives of the People's Assembly of
North and East Syria.
Manbij- "The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions keep attacking
North and East Syria, especially targeting women, by using many ways and
methods. Sovereign powers have used the women's body as a tool to
achieve their goals from past to the present," said Azima Deniz, one of
the executives of the People's Assembly of North and East Syria,
speaking about the attacks of the Turkish state, in cooperation with the
KDP, on pioneering women both in North and East Syria and the Kurdistan
Region of Iraq. "Following the building of the caste system, women were
stripped of their essence, subjected to gender discrimination, and seen
as a commodity," said Azima Deniz, stressing that sovereign powers keep
implementing this system to attack women. Azima Deniz also mentioned the
analysis of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan on women. "Leader Apo says
that a country cannot be free unless the women are free. The Turkish
state has carried out its occupational policies not only in North and
East Syria but also in four parts of Kurdistan. Today, even Iran uses
the methods of the Turkish state. Therefore, women should be aware of
the policies of the male-dominated system. An honorable life is not
measured by individuals, but by their bond to their country, history,
culture, and ethical values."
'Women leave their mark on history by struggling'
Sovereign powers do not want women to be free because they do not want
their societies to be developed, Azima Deniz stressed. "The sovereign
powers use different methods to distract women from their history and
culture. Abdullah Ocalan is the only leader who values women and wants
the 'Jin, jiyan, azadi' philosophy to come to life. In North and East
Syria, women mobilize with the 'Jin, jiyan, azadi' philosophy and leave
their mark on history by struggling. The sovereign powers use all kinds
of methods to prevent this philosophy from coming to life."
"Women must be determined to resist"
Women resist the ongoing Turkish attacks, Azima Deniz indicated and
concluded her speech, saying, "Women must be determined to resist and
not accept being commodified. Women must stand against all kinds of
occupations and keep struggling." >>

<<'Jineology aims to break down all the stereotypes generalized by the
patriarchal mindset'
The Jineology Academy of North and East Syria held its second conference
between September 25-26. "Jineology aims to break down all the gender
stereotypes generalized by the patriarchal mindset," says Evin Ehmed.
Hasakah- The Jineology Academy of North and East Syria held its second
conference in the city of Hasakah, Jazira Canton of North and East
Syria, between September 25-26 with the motto, "Women's Wisdom is
Updated by Jineology". In an interview with NuJINHA, Evîn Ehmed, member
of the academy, talked about the importance of Jineology.
'We want to build a new life'
Jineology has many purposes, Evin Ehmed said, adding, "Jineology,
women's science, also aims to change the patriarchal mindset that has
been imposed on society for thousands of years. We want to build a new
life by reexamining and interpreting history through Jineology because
the history has been destroyed and ruined by the male-dominated system
for thousands of years. Therefore, the Jineology Academy decided to
reinterpret it."
It aims to break down gender stereotypes
The Jineology Academy has created a significant change in society, Evin
Ehmed noted. "Jineology aims to break down all the gender stereotypes
that are generalized by the patriarchal mindset in society, to establish
a new system so that women can know themselves and express themselves
better and have a free life. Everyone knows that women's identity is
ignored, and the aim of Jineology is to redefine and revive women's
identity." As an academy, Jineology, women's science, focuses on
individuals, she stressed. "Eveyone knows that you cannot change your
society without changing yourselves. You should first change yourselves
to change your society. Education plays an important role in change. Our
academy has strong staff because women’s science can be popularized in
society by strong staff." Evin Ehmed recalled that the academy held its
first conference in 2018. "At the first conference, many decisions were
made and most of the decisions were implemented. The results of the
first conference were discussed at the second conference. After the
first conference, many Jineology centers and academies were opened in
the region. This is a success for us because it shows that Jineology has
practically fulfilled its responsibility. Building a democratic family
model is one of the purposes of Jineology because families are
fundamental building blocks of society and therefore a free society can
be built when families are free."
'We want to define history well'
In her speech, Evîn Ehmed also commented on the impact of positivism on
society. "We must build the Democratic Confederalism System against
positivism. We must build a society based on the Democratic
Confederalism System through the Jineology Academy against positivism
and we must develop a stronger, better and faster theory." Jineology is
a science that constantly renews itself, Evin Ehmed said. "We want to
publish brochures and books on power, history and women’s science. We
want to define history well through Jineology. If we define history
well, we can find solutions not only to the problems faced by women but
also to the problems faced by men and society." >>

<<Afghan activists demand recognition of gender apartheid
A group of Afghan women activists held a protest in Berlin, calling on
the German government to recognize the "gender apartheid and the
genocide of the Hazaras" in Afghanistan.
News Center- A group of human rights and women's rights activists held a
protest in Berlin on Sunday, calling on the German government to
recognize the "gender apartheid and the genocide of the Hazaras" in
Afghanistan. "For three years, the Taliban have imposed many
restrictions on women in Afghanistan, including bans on education, work,
and social life. Women face gender apartheid in Afghanistan," said the
activists in an open letter to the German government. "The Hazaras have
experienced ethnic cleansing in Afghanistan. They are being
systematically killed by groups cooperating with the Taliban due to
