Medyanews - October 26, 2024
<<Protests across Europe and northeastern Syria condemn Turkish military strikes
Thousands of people protested in northeastern Syria and Europe against Turkish air strikes that began on 23 October. The strikes have mainly targeted civilian areas and infrastructure, leaving at least 27 dead and 40 injured. The demonstrations condemned the ongoing attacks, which have caused widespread destruction in the cities. Since the night of 23 October, massive Turkish military attacks have continued in northeastern Syria, mainly targeting civilian areas and infrastructure, leaving 27 people dead and at least 40 injured. In response to these attacks, thousands of people took to the streets in northeastern Syria and Europe to condemn the attacks. The Turkish army is carrying out these attacks against areas in northeastern Syria that are under the control of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), also known as Rojava, where Kurdish, Armenian, Arab and Assyrian people are reorganising their society on the basis of Democratic Confederalism, a model developed by the imprisoned Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. This model proposes a peaceful coexistence of the different peoples and religions of the region based on women’s liberation, ecology and grassroots liberation.
North and East Syria
People joined protest marches across northeastern Syria to condemn the ongoing Turkish military attacks on the region and reaffirm their will to resist against the attacks on their homeland. Demonstrations took place in Shahba (Şehba), Deir ez-Zor (Dêrazor), Tabqa (Tebqa), Raqqa (Reqa), Manbij (Minbic) and Al-Qahtaniyah (Tirbespi), with many democratic institutions also joining the marches and reading out statements.
"These attacks cannot break the will of the people of North and East Syria. Whatever sacrifices we have to give, we will protect our land," was stated at a protest march in Tabqa and echoed at many other protests. A spokesperson for the Democratic Union Party (PYD) called the Turkish attacks "war crimes” and “inhumane".

Medyanews - October 26, 2024
<<Erdogan's motives for intensified attacks in Kurdish-led North and East Syria
An ANF agency analysis examines Turkey's ongoing airstrikes on North and East Syria, arguing that the Erdogan government is capitalising on regional instability to expand Turkish influence and dismantle Kurdish-led self-governance. The recent Turkish airstrikes targeting areas under the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) have killed at least 27 people, injured many more, and inflicted significant material losses. An analysis authored by Zeki Bedran argues that these attacks are part of a larger Turkish strategy in Syria, with Erdogan's government leveraging shifting regional dynamics to expand Turkish influence and military presence, specifically by targeting the Kurdish-led DAANES administration. According to the analysis, Erdogan's primary objective is the eventual dismantling of DAANES authority, beginning with efforts to seize Tall Rifat (Til Rifat) and Shahba (Şehba). With Syria’s Assad government currently weakened and reliant on support from Russia, Iran and Hezbollah-each strained by their respective conflicts-Turkey appears intent on exploiting the situation to secure greater control over the region.
Turkey's targeting of areas with Kurdish populations is viewed as part of a broader strategy of ethnic displacement. By seizing these territories, Erdoğan aims to displace Kurdish residents and reassert Turkish influence, potentially even threatening the strategic city of Aleppo.
RUSSIA'S LIMITED RESPONSE
Distracted by its ongoing involvement in Ukraine, Russia has taken a relatively passive stance regarding Turkey's recent actions, focusing on sustaining Assad's regime without directly challenging Turkish advances. While Russia maintains a strong interest in keeping Assad in power, it has been careful to manage Turkey's demands to avoid escalating tensions further.
IDLIB AS A STRATEGIC BASE
In Idlib, Turkey aligns itself with Western powers, claiming its military presence is intended to prevent a refugee influx into Turkey should conflicts intensify. Critics argue, however, that Turkey's presence in Idlib supports Sunni Islamist groups aligned with Erdogan's interests, while diminishing Kurdish and local opposition.
GEOPOLITICAL OPPORTUNITIES
The article highlights Erdogan's two-pronged strategy-offering ceasefire rhetoric for Palestine and Lebanon while escalating regional militarisation. As Turkey deepens its influence in Syrian Kurdish areas, analysts stress that such actions are part of Erdoğan’s efforts to consolidate domestic support and distract from Turkey's internal issues, preparing the public for potential new conflicts.>>

'We follow in the footsteps of leader Apo and our martyrs'
The Turkish state deliberately targets civilians, Zozan Simo, member of the TAJE Diplomacy Committee, told NuJINHA. "Many civilians were killed in the Turkish attacks. <<Kongra Star commemorates Gulnaz Karataş on 32nd anniversary of her death
Kongra Star has published a written statement on the 32nd death anniversary of Gülnaz Karataş, calling on all women to strengthen the struggle for freedom.
News Center- Kongra Star has published a written statement on the 32nd death anniversary of Gulnaz Karataş (nom de guerre: Beritan Hevi), one of the leading commanders of the Kurdish Women's Freedom Movement. "We commemorate all women, who lost their lives while fighting for freedom such as Beritan, Sakine, Delal Amed, Leyla Agiri and Nagihan Akarsel," the statement said. Martyr Beritan became a symbol of freedom and resistance against betrayal with her struggle and sacrifice, Kongra Star emphasized in the statement. "We greet the struggle of our people and comrades for freedom. Comrade Beritan got involved in the struggle for freedom in May 1991. She gave a voice and a color to the struggle for freedom. Beritan became the symbol of resistance and freedom when the KDP was filled with betrayal and collaboration. On October 25, 1992, she used her body as a shield against betrayal by throwing herself off a cliff in Xakurke (Hakurk, an area in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq) and she was martyred along with her 144 comrades. As leader Apo (Abdullah Öcalan) says, Comrade Beritan's action took the women's freedom struggle and organization to a new stage. The most concrete response given by leader Apo to her martyrdom was the formation of a women's army. Today, we strengthen the struggle for freedom by following in the footsteps of Martyr Beritan. The women's freedom movement and the women's army have broken the patriarchy and forced men to change." At the end of the statement, Kongra Star called on all revolutionary women, female politicians and women fighting for freedom to strengthen the struggle for freedom and the people of Bashur Kurdistan (Southern Kurdistan or Iraqi Kurdistan) to "fight against the betrayal of the Barzani family that is in cooperation with the fascist Turkish state." >>
