9 years of Ankara Massacre
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Oct. 10, 2024 - by SARYA DENIZ
<<9 years of Ankara Massacre: ISIS still poses a threat
Nine years have passed since the Ankara Massacre that took place on
October 10, 2015. "ISIS still poses a threat," said Ilke Işık, member of
the Lawyers Commission of the October 10 Ankara Massacre.
News Center- "Nine years have passed since the bomb attacks carried out
by ISIS against the people attending the Labor, Peace and Democracy"
rally held outside of Ankara Central railway station on October 10,
2015. 101 people were killed and hundreds injured in the massacre, one
of the bloodiest massacres in the history of Turkiye. In 2014, the whole
world was shaken by the attacks of a barbaric, anti-humanitarian group
that introduced itself as ISIS. ISIS sold Yazidi women in slave markets
and took control of many cities in Syria and Iraq. Even before the
massacre on October 10, Turkiye had been going through a period of
conflict, war and massacres. Türkiye has always been the most convenient
country for ISIS. ISIS members could easily use the borders of Turkiye.
The ruling party, AKP, lost votes in the general elections that were
held in the country on June 7, 2015. The climate of fear created or
would be created would also determine the results of the general
elections to be held in November 2015. NuJINHA spoke to Ilke Işık, a
member of the Lawyers Commission of the October 10 Ankara Massacre Case,
about before and after the Ankara Massacre.
"After the general elections in June, the government announced that it
did not recognize the results. The government and coalitions could not
be formed and we faced a government that started a process of conflict
towards new general elections. A rally was organized on October 10, 2015
to say no to conflict and demand peace."
'Nothing is the same with the past'
"Although life stopped on that day for us, we have been continuing to
live for nine years, İlke Işık said, stressing that "nothing is the same
with the past" since the massacre. "The AKP government, which lost in
the elections, did this (massacre) through oppression and chaos. Since
then, the country has become a country ruled by oppression, violence and
threats. The country has become an open prison."
'It allows ISIS to walk freely in the country'
We face a state that allows ISIS to walk freely in the country by using
all its mechanisms, including the government, judiciary, prosecutors,
Ilke Işık emphasized. "The massacre changed the social and political
balances of the country and caused the AKP to re-establish its power."
'They have never stopped ISIS'
"The 2015 period is a period that should never be forgotten by the whole
world, the Middle East and especially Turkiye. A group declared a
caliphate in that period, taking control of cities, killing people, and
enslaving women. What the Yazidis in Shengal experienced should never be
forgotten. Still, thousands of girls and women are missing. In that
period, the AKP government called ISIS 'angry children' and this
government still rules the country. They have never stopped ISIS."
Speaking about the attacks of ISIS, she said, "ISIS did not only carry
out the Ankara Massacre, it also carried out 5-6 massacres such as the
bombing of the buildings of the HDP in Mersin and Adana, the rally held
by the HDP in Diyarbakır, the Suruç bombing and the attack in Istanbul
and on the henna night in Gaziantep."
'ISIS still poses a threat'
Speaking about the Ankara Massacre Case, Ilke Işık said, "The necessary
effort is not made to arrest the defendants and no one can guarantee
that the fugitive defendants will not appear again at any moment.
Therefore, ISIS still poses a threat in the country. Each hearing has
been taking place in courtrooms filled with people. The trial continues
to be on the agenda. Our clients are able to turn the trial into an
incredible struggle in every way. The struggle of the victims families
has created a very important struggle for justice in the country. Those
responsible for the massacre will definitely be brought to justice." >>

Women of Gire Spi
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Oct. 9, 2024 - by BERÇEM CUDI
<<Women of Gire Spi: We should liberate our cities to live with dignity
The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions launched their attacks on
Serekaniye and Gire Spi on October 9, 2019. "We should liberate our
cities to live with dignity," said displaced women of Gire Spi.
Ayn Issa- In 2015, Gire Spi was liberated from ISIS by the YPJ/YPG
fighters, However, the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions
attacked Serekaniye (Ras al-Ayn) and Gire Spi (Tell Abyad) on October
9,2019, displacing thousands. A NuJINHA team visited the Tal al-Samin
IDP camp, situated about 25 kilometers north of Raqqa, to speak to
displaced women of Girê Spî, on the fifth anniversary of the occupation
of the town.
'The occupation and genocidal attacks are a plan to destroy the
revolution'
"Five years ago, we, the Arab, Kurdish, Turkmen and Armenian people, had
a democratic, peaceful and common life," said Fadile Mihemed, Co-chair
of Gire Spi People's Assembly. "Gire Spi is a small town subjected to
the attacks by ISIS, the Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army and Al-Nusra
Front. Despite all the attacks, we built our system based on democracy.
Since Gire Spi is close to the borders of the Turkish state, it was
subjected to threats and attacks by the Turkish state. Following the
revolution in North and East Syria (Rojava), the Turkish state launched
operations into northeastern Syria to occupy our cities. They first
occupied Afrin."
'We stood against the occupation with all our might'
Speaking about the resistance of the people, especially women, of Gire
Spi, she said, "After the occupation of Afrin, the Turkish state
attacked Gire Spi and Serekaniye in 2019. It used warplanes and
prohibited weapons to occupy Gire Spi and Serekaniye. Despite all the
attacks, we, as the people of Gire Spi, stood against the occupation
with all our might."
'People are deprived of even basic living supplies'
Fadile Mihemed told us that they knew the situation in Gire Spi. "Yes,
we are not in Gire Spi but we always follow what has been happening
there. The people living in Gire Spi face inhuman practices such as
arrest, kidnapping and rape. In addition to these inhuman practices,
they are deprived of even basic living supplies. The people of Gire Spi,
especially women, always tell us that they want Girê Spî to be liberated
to have a life with dignity."
'We will liberate our cities by resisting'
Fadile Mihemed concluded her speech, saying, "We should unite to end the
occupation in Afrin, Al Bab, Azaz, Serekaniye and Gire Spi. Together, we
should liberate our cities to live with dignity."
'Our hometown will be liberated'
"In October 2019, the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions attacked
our town," said Cevahir Isa, a displaced woman of Gire Spi. "We did not
know how to protect ourselves from the Turkish attacks and eventually we
came to this camp. Life in the camp is very difficult; we suffer from
hot weather in summer and cold in winter. Our children have no future
here. Despite everything, we are still hopeful. We resist and endure all
the difficult living conditions in the camp because we know that our
hometown will be liberated one day and we will return to our home."
'They plundered and destroyed our houses'
Rehime Remo, a displaced woman of Gire Spis Hicazi village, told us that
all the people left the village because it was a Kurdish village. "On
October 10, I left the village along with my family. As we heard, the
members of the Turkish-backed factions plundered and destroyed our
houses. As the displaced people of Gire Spi in the camp, we share our
feelings, our longing, our resistance and our dreams with each other. We
strengthen each other." >>

Afwa Al-Maisaoui
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Oct. 9, 2024 - by ZOUHOUR MECHERGUI
<<Rise in gender-based violence in Tunisia due to ineffective
implementation of law
Tunisian human rights activist Afwa Al-Maisaoui believes that there is a
rise in violence against women in Tunisia due to the ineffective
implementation of the law protecting women against violence.
Tunisia- In 2017, the Tunisian Parliament adopted Law 58, protecting
women from violence against women. Despite this law, there is a rise in
violence against women in the country. Afwa Al-Maisaoui, a human rights
activist and legal coordinator at the Women First Association, feminist
and non-profit organization dedicated to promoting gender equality and
defending women's rights in Sidi Bouzid Governorate, thinks that customs
and traditions and ineffective implementation of the law cause the rise
in gender-based violence in the country.
Awareness-raising activities
Women, especially in rural areas, are unaware of their rights, Afwa Al-Maisaoui
said, recalling that the Tunisian Parliament adopted Law 58 in 2017.
"Women living in rural areas are unaware of the law. Although some are
aware, they do not report violence due to social pressure. The Women
First Association carries out awareness-raising activities to reach all
women. The association also carried out activities for women with
special needs."
Criticizing the lack of centers that provide help and shelters to women,
Afwa Al-Maisaoui said, "In recent years, the rates of violence against
women have doubled in Tunisia. Most women have to endure violence
because they do not have economic independence. The association also
promotes women's economic empowerment so that women achieve their
economic independence."
Afwa Al-Maisaoui also called on Tunisian authorities to implement Law 58
effectively.
"The law should be implemented effectively in order to reduce this
phenomenon. Women should expose the harassers and abusers at work, at
home or in the streets. There are women struggling for the effective
implementation of law." >>

<<Five years of occupation in Serekaniye and Gire Spi: Our resistance is
a response to the conspiracy
The Turkish state occupied Serekaniye and Gire Spi five years ago. "The
occupation is the continuation of the international conspiracy against
Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. Our resistance is a response to the
conspiracy," said the women of Serêkaniyê.
Hasakah-The international conspiracy against Kurdish leader Abdullah
Ocalan has left its five years behind. On October 9, 2019, the 20th
anniversary of the conspiracy, the Turkish state and Turkish-backed
factions occupied Serekaniye (Ras al-Ayn) and Gire Spi (Tell Abyad),
displacing more than 200,000 people to the areas controlled by the
Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES). The displaced
people settled in different cities of North and East Syria, 16,000 of
them were placed in the Washokani camp, an informal internally displaced
person (IDP) camp in Hasakah. Since it is an informal IDPs camp run by
the AANES, the displaced people in the camp receive no aid from the
United Nations. The displaced people living in the camp struggle to
survive in the hope that they will return to their city. In two cities
controlled by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions, women are
subjected to violations such as harassment, violence, torture and
kidnapping. Many women are held in prisons of the Turkish state and
Turkish-backed factions. On the fifth anniversary of the occupation,
women of Serekaniye living in the camp state that they will take their
city back from occupiers.
'We chose to resist'
Zibeda Ehmed, a displaced woman of Serekaniye living in the camp, thinks
that the occupation of Serekaniye is the continuation of the
international conspiracy against Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan.
"Everyone knows that our city was occupied on the same day when the
conspiracy started against Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. They (The
Turkish state) tried to separate the people from their leader; however,
they failed. Today, the conspiracy continues in many ways. The
occupation of Serêkaniyê is the continuation of this conspiracy. For
five years, we have resisted in the Washokani camp to respond to the
conspiracy. We chose to resist to protect our country and cities. As
displaced people in the camp, we face many difficulties but no one dies
of hunger."
'The Turkish state targeted our unity by attacking our city'
The occupation of Serekaniye is essentially an attack on the will of the
people, said Emina Ehmed, a displaced woman of Serekaniye. "We built a
safe and common life in Serêkaniyê; however, the Turkish state attacked
our safe and common life. We have been living in the camp for five years
and the living conditions of the displaced people are very bad. Until
now, humanitarian aid organizations have not changed our tents. We will
change our tents to be ready for winter. All we want is to return to our
homeland. The Turkish state violated our rights by occupying our homes,
our cities, and forcing us to live in tents. We call on humanitarian aid
organizations to fulfill their responsibilities. All we want is our
homeland, nothing else." >>

<<Statements by journalists' associations on Kurdish Women Journalists'
Day
"Women journalists fight for the truth with courage and determination,"
say the statements released by the Mesopotamia Women Journalists'
Association and the Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) to mark
Kurdish Women Journalists' Day.
News Center- The Mesopotamia Women Journalists Association and the
Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) have released written
statements to mark Kurdish Women's Journalists' Day, celebrated every
year on October 7 since Gurbetelli Ersoz, a Kurdish journalist and
Turkiye's first female editor-in-chief, was killed on October 7, 1997. "Gurbetelli
Ersoz was a brave revolutionary, journalist and women's rights defender
who did not take a step back despite oppression," said the statement
released by the Mesopotamia Women Journalists' Association. "In memory
of Gurbetelli, who lost her life on October 7, 1997, Kurdish women
journalists keep struggling to make the voices of women heard. This
struggle highlights the importance of women taking their deserved spaces
in media and social life. Women journalists keep pursuing the truth
against gendered language used by the media despite all kinds of
oppression, detentions and arrests, the statement stressed. "Kurdish
women journalists, who are subjected to oppression and threats while
reporting, work devotedly to maintain the existence of a free press.
Journalist Rabia Onver has been subjected to oppression for her reports
in Hakkari and this shows how women journalists are oppressed. Despite
all the oppression, Rabia and Kurdish women journalists like her keep
pursuing the truth." Mentioning the killings of two journalists in
Sulaymaniyah, the statement said, "This year, we also commemorate
Gülistan Tara and Hero Bahadin, who were killed in a Turkish drone
attack in Sulaymaniyah. This attack is part of the ongoing crackdown on
the tradition of free press and women journalists. Gulistan and Hero,
just like Gurbetelli and Nagihan, went down in history with their
resistance as defenders of the free press. In addition, we commemorate
journalist and academic Nagihan Akarsel, who was killed in Sulaymaniyah
on October 4, 2022. Nagihan made great efforts to develop and spread
Jineology, women's science, and has become one of the symbols of the
women's struggle for freedom."
Commemorating all the free press workers who lost their lives in the
person of journalists Gurbetelli Ersoz, Nagihan Akarsel, Gulistan Tara
and Hero Bahadin, the association said, "We vow to maintain their legacy
with determination. As Kurdish women journalists, we believe that the
truth will not remain in the darkness with the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi"
philosophy."
'We stand firm to write the truth'
The Dicle Fırat Journalists Association (DFG) has also released a
written statement on social media platforms.
"On this day, which has been celebrated as Kurdish Women Journalists'
Day for eight years, we are once again proud to carry on this precious
legacy. The legacy left by Gurbetelli lights the way of Kurdish women
journalists and makes their determination to fight under any
circumstances visible again. The women journalists, who do not leave
Gurbetelli's pen on the ground, stand firm to write the truth despite
the masculine language of the media. We celebrate the day of our
colleagues, Kurdish women journalists who do not give up and pursue the
truth despite the policies of oppression, detention, arrest, ignorance
and destruction, and we commemorate our journalist colleagues,
particularly Gurbetelli Ersoz, who sacrificed themselves for pursuing
the truth." >>

Gurbetelli Ersoz, Deniz Fırat and Nujiyan Erhan
Jinha - Womens News Agency - Oct. 4, 2024 - by EBIR MUHAMED
<<Kurdish Women Journalists' Day: We keep reporting the truth
"We keep reporting the truth by following in the footsteps of women
journalists, who lost their lives while reporting the truth such as
Gurbetelli Ersoz, Deniz Fırat and Nujiyan Erhan."
Qamishlo- Kurdish women journalists in four parts of Kurdistan and all
around the world are celebrating Kurdish Womens Journalist Day, October
7. The day is dedicated to the memory of Gurbetelli Ersöz, a Kurdish
journalist and Turkiye's first female editor-in-chief who was killed on
October 7, 1997.
'We maintain the legacy of the martyrs'
"As women journalists in North and East Syri, we maintain the legacy of
the martyrs such as Gurbetelli Ersoz, Deniz Fırat and Nujiyan Erhan,"
Cudi Eli, a reporter of Ronahi TV in North and East Syria, told NuJINHA.
"They left us achievements in Kurdish journalism. Women journalists
played an important role in the development of the press in Rojava
Kurdistan. Their struggle paves the way for us. Therefore, we see them
as pioneers of truth. We keep reporting the truth by following in the
footsteps of them. Thanks to them, women in Rojava have their own
channels, magazines, news agencies and radio stations today."
'The attacks cannot intimidate us'
Gulistan Tara and Hero Bahadin
Eva Hese, a television presenter at Rojava TV, recalled the Turkish
drone attack that killed two journalists in Sulaymaniyah, Kurdistan
Region of Iraq. "The Turkish state always tries to break the strong will
of Kurdish women. On August 23, a Turkish drone targeted a vehicle
carrying journalists in the Said Sadiq district of Sulaymaniyah, killing
two women journalists, Gulistan Tara and Hero Bahadin. The Turkish
attacks cannot intimidate us; on the contrary, they strengthen us. Women
journalists in North and East Syria make great efforts to report the
truth."
'Conventions are not implemented'
The attacks on journalists in four parts of Kurdistan have intensified
for four years, stressed Lava Ibrahim, a reporter of the Nefel
Production. "In addition to the current war, a special war has been
being waged against journalists. In August 2023, a Turkish drone
targeted the vehicle of JIN TV in North and East Syria, killing a press
worker. In august 2024, a Turkish drone targeted two women journalists
in Sulaymaniyah.
Pakhshan Azizi
On July 23, 2024, journalist Pakhshan Azizi was sentenced to death. In
Turkiye, hundreds of journalists are behind bars. In Southern Kurdistan,
journalists have been prevented from reporting. Journalists are targeted
to prevent them from reporting the crimes committed by the Turkish
state.
Speaking about conventions protecting journalists in war zones, Lava
Ibrahim said," Unfortunately, these conventions are not implemented. The
Women's Press Union (YRJ) has carried out activities to protect the
rights of journalists in North and East Syria. As women journalists in
northeastern Syria, we are always in solidarity with each other. We are
lucky to have the YRJ, protecting our rights. Despite everything, we
will keep reporting the truth." >>

<<'Jineology catches women's attention all over the world'
"Jineology catches women's attention all over the world," said Nayrouz
Muslim, an academic at the Al-Sharq University in Raqqa, talking about
the second conference of the Jineology Academy held in Hasakah.
Hasakah- The Jineology Academy of North and East Syria held its second
conference in the city of Hasakah, Jazira Canton of North and East
Syria, between September 25-26 with the motto, "Women's Wisdom is
Updated by Jineology". Nayrouz Muslim, an academic at the Al-Sharq
University in Raqqa, was one of the women attending the conference.
'We can gain knowledge on every subject through education'
Nayrouz Muslim thinks that Jineology, women's science, should be
discussed by all organizations. Wars and all forms of violence,
including online violence, target women in many ways. Women should know
themselves well, communicate with women's organizations and academies
and receive education in order to protect themselves from violence.
Education play an important role for women in improving themselves. As
women, we can gain knowledge on every subject and learn what is going on
all around the world through education."
'Co-presidential system began to be implemented following the
revolution'
Jineology proposed by Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan has been
implemented since the Revolution in Rojava that started in 2012 with the
leadership of women, Nayrouz Muslim stressed. "Co-presidential system
began to be implemented following the revolution. Now, women participate
in all facets of life. Women, who embrace the thoughts and philosophy of
leader Abdullah Ocalan, play an active role in many fields such as
economy, military and politics in North and East Syria."
'Many women from different countries have visited the region'
Women all around the world consider Jineology important, Nayrouz Muslim
said. "There is great interest in this science and many women and
international press outlets were present at the conference. Many women
from different countries have visited the region to learn more about the
revolution led by women. Women of Jineology Academy in North and East
Syria strengthen their relations with women in other countries and
participate in online and international women's meetings. For three
years, women from our region have travelled to other countries to share
their experiences."
'We will be ourselves through the "Jin,Jiyan,Azadi" philosophy'
Nayrouz Muslim believes that peaceful revolutions are the way to change.
"Revolutions are the ways to build a better future and a new world. If
we realize the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi" philosophy developed by leader
Abdullah Ocalan, we will be ourselves and reveal women's roles in
