<<'Syrian government must lift the siege on Shahba'
<The Syrian government must lift the siege on Shahba,> said Zelox Bekir,
Co-chair of the Educational Institution of Afrin-Shahba, emphasizing
that the Syrian crisis can be resolved by the people of Syria through
dialogue.
Shahba- The Syrian government forces have intensified the siege and
embargo on Shahba amid the ongoing Turkish attacks. The displaced people
of Afrin, who were forced to leave their homes six years ago by the
Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions and settled in Shahba, face
being displaced again.
'Civilians paid heavy prices'
NuJINHA spoke to Zelox Bekir, Co-chair of the Educational Institution of
Afrin-Shahba, about the siege imposed on Shahba by the Syrian government
and the Turkish attacks. <2023 was the centenary of the Lausanne Treaty.
It was the year of wars not only in the Middle East but also in Ukraine
and Palestine; civilians paid the heavy prices of these wars. The
Kurdish people also paid heavy prices in 2023. The Kurdish people became
the victims of genocidal policies, the policies of oppression and
fascist systems. Especially the people of Rojava Kurdistan paid heavy
prices.>
'Their aim is to destroy the system based on democracy'
Zelox Bekir also talked about the Syrian crisis. <For years, North and
East Syria has been attacked by ISIS, the Turkish state and
Turkish-backed factions such as Jabhat al-Nusra. The Autonomous
Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) built a system based on
democracy in North and East Syria against capitalism and genocidal
policies. Hegemonic forces aim to destroy this system.>
'The Syrian government uses hunger as a policy'
Some areas of North and East Syria are occupied, she said, <The Damascus
government (Syrian government) uses hunger as a policy in North and East
Syria. The displaced people of Afrin have been resisting in Shahba for
six years. Their resistance frustrates the plans of the Turkish State
and Damascus government aiming to depopulate the region. The Damascus
government forces do not allow the entry of essential supplies, such as
fuel, flour and humanitarian aid to Shahba. In summer, the Turkish state
cut off the water of the Euphrates River. The Damascus government and
the Turkish state carry out the same policy.
'The Syrian crisis will be resolved by the people of Syria'
Emphasizing that the other countries intervened in Syria for their own
interests, Zelox Bekir said:
<The Damascus government should know very well that the Syrian crisis
will be resolved by the people of Syria, not other countries. As the
AANES, our doors are always open to negotiation and dialogue with the
Damascus government. The Syrian crisis can be resolved by the people of
Syria through dialogue. The Damascus government must lift the siege to
resolve the crisis. The resistance of the people of North and East Syria
will take the occupying forces away from the region.> >>

<<Iman Al-Halaf: Family law is an opportunity for women
Iman Al-Halaf from the Zenubya Women's Community Education Committee
says that women, who lived under the control of ISIS in Raqqa, still
suffer from trauma, <Some are still afraid of going out. But now, they
have a family law.>
Raqqa- The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)
enacted the Family Law on November 10, 2022 to guarantee justice and
equality. Meetings, seminars and workshops have been held across North
and East Syria to give information about the Family Law. In an interview
with NuJINHA, Iman Al-Halaf, member of the Zenubya Women's Community
Education Committee, talked about the law.
'The Family Law is one of the important gains of the revolution'
Speaking about the gains achieved by women following the revolution in
Rojava, she said, <The Family Law is one of the important gains of the
revolution. We have held meetings, seminars and workshops in cities,
towns, villages and neighborhoods to give information about the law.>
The Zenubya Women's Community Education Committee develops educational
programs to ensure gender equality in North and East Syria. <Our
educational programs aim to include women in all facets of life,
ensuring gender equality in society. Women have been restricted by the
patriarchal mindset, traditions and traditions for thousands of years.
Many issues such as child marriage and polygamy are the result of the
patriarchal mindset. Femicide increases day by day due to the
patriarchal mindset. The Family Law must be immediately implemented to
eliminate child marriage, polygamy, femicide and violence against
women.>
'Women's rights have been taken away'
Women in the Middle East are still subjected to discrimination,
persecution and exclusion due to gender stereotypes, Iman Al-Halaf said.
<Women are expected to rear children and manage the daily requirements
of the household. All the rights of women have been taken away. After
the Syrian crisis, women faced more restrictions.>
'Family Law is an opportunity for women'
Iman Al-Halaf also talked about the situation of women in Raqqa under
the control of ISIS. <Women, who lived under the control of ISIS in
Raqqa, still suffer from trauma. Some are still afraid of going out. But
now, they have a family law. The Family Law is an opportunity for women
to break their chains. Women can file a complaint when their rights are
violated. We will keep making efforts to give information about the law.
We will ensure gender equality to have a free and ethical society.> >>

The platform has released its reports on femicide in Turkey since 2008.

Displaced women of Afrin
Jinha - 3 Jan 2024 - by HESNA MIHEMED
<<Displaced women of Afrin living under Turkish attacks in Shahba
Women, who were displaced from Afrin to the Um Hoşe village of Shahba
after Afrin was occupied by the Turkish state, have been living under
Turkish attacks in Shahba.
Shahba- The Turkish state continues to carry out attacks on North and
East Syria. Since October 4, 2023, the Turkish drones have been
targeting civilian infrastructure, including hospitals, health centers,
power and water stations, in the region. 10 civilians were killed and
many more were injured in the Turkish attacks on December 25, 2023.
After the Turkish state and Turkish-backed faction occupied Afrin on
March 18, 2018, many people had to leave their homeland to Shahba
Canton. Displaced people of Afrin are now subjected to Turkish
bombardment in the canton. NuJINHA spoke to several displaced women of
Afrin living in the Um Hoşe village of Shahba Canton. Fatime Raşid, one
of the displaced women of Afrin, told us that they were never afraid of
the enemy's weapons and that they would keep resisting despite all the
attacks.
'We are subjected to the Turkish attacks every day'
Fatime Raşid emphasized that they had left Afrin to return to their
homeland one day. <We live in a border village and we are subjected to
the Turkish attacks every day. We will resist the attacks to the end.
Until now, we have paid a very heavy price and we will follow in the
footsteps of our children, who were martyred while defending their
land.>
'We will stay here'
<We will resist the Turkish attacks to the end,> said Fatime Necar, who
suffers from many health problems. <During the bombardment, I cannot
protect myself because of the pain in my legs. Despite everything, we
are determined to resist the enemy.> Fatime Necar also pointed to the
siege imposed by the Syrian government on Shahba. <We have no fuel to
keep us warm.> Necah Reşid, another displaced woman of Afrin, said that
the Turkish state targeted civilian infrastructure. <The Turkish state
kills civilians. It targets civilian infrastructure across North and
East Syria. Erdoğan should know very well that he cannot stop the
resistance of the Kurdish people. Despite the ongoing Turkish attacks
and bombardment, we will not leave Shahba; we will stay here.> >>

<<Syrian government continues to impose siege on Shahba
The siege and embargo imposed on Shahba by the Syrian government
obstruct residents' access to fuel and other essential supplies.
Shahba- The embargo and siege imposed by the Syrian government on Shahba
Canton make living conditions even more difficult in winter. The 4th
Armored Division of the Syrian army has not allowed the essential
supplies such as fuel, food and medicine entering the region, which
causes the people of the canton to face more difficulties in winter.
'Health centers and hospitals have no electricity'
Fadela Ali is a displaced woman of Afrin living in Shahba. She suffers
from asthma but has difficulties in accessing medicine. <I need to use a
nebulizer since I have asthma. However, health centers and hospitals
have no electricity to provide health services to us,> said Fadela Ali,
who had to leave Afrin due to the Turkish occupation. <Now, we face the
embargo and siege imposed by the Syrian government.>
'We resist the worsening living conditions'
The people of Shahba face more difficulties in winter due to the siege.
<The weather is getting colder and people suffer from many diseases. We
cannot even meet our essential needs. We resist the worsening living
conditions; the more we resist, the more we face restrictions. Despite
everything, we will resist to the end. Human rights organizations should
break their silence against this siege. They should put pressure on the
Syrian government to lift the siege,> Fadela Ali said.
'We have no fuel to keep us warm in tents'
Sherine Muhammad underwent a surgery; however, her treatment was
uncompleted due to the siege. Her health is deteriorating due to cold
weather and lack of medicine. <The Syrian forces have not allowed fuel
and medical supplies entering the region. We live in tents and it is
very cold. We have no fuel to keep us warm in tents. We call on the
international community to break the silence and put pressure on the
Syrian government.>
'I cannot protect my son with disabilities from cold weather'
Fatima Abdo has a 12-year-old son with disabilities. <My son cannot
receive treatment due to the siege imposed by the Syrian government. I
have to keep him warm in winter and cool in summer. My son’s health is
deteriorating because we live in a tent. Due to shortage of fuel, I
cannot protect my son with disabilities from cold weather. The siege and
embargo must be lifted now. The Syrian government must allow fuel and
other essential supplies to enter the region.> >>

Abeer Hamdy and Lamia Farouk Muhammad
Jinha - 3 Jan 2024 - by ASMAA FATHI
<<'Women have shaken the throne of the patriarchal mindset in Egypt'
Abeer Hamdy, lawyer and women's rights activist, thinks Egyptian women
have shaken the throne of the mindset by raising social awareness.
Cairo- Women's rights defenders make great efforts to combat violence
against women in Egypt. Abeer Hamdy, lawyer and women's rights activist,
believes that feminist organizations played an important role in
submitting the draft uniform law for combating violence against women to
the Egyptian Parliament.
'The requirements of the CEDAW are not fulfilled'
Abeer Hamdy pointed to the importance of the Convention on the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and
said, <The convention is the only comprehensive and internationally
binding instrument to eliminate discrimination against women.> Abeer
Hamdy emphasized that the countries that have signed the convention did
not fulfill the requirements of the convention. <Despite the convention,
women are subjected to many rights violations and all forms of
violence.> Speaking about the efforts of feminist organizations for
combating violence against women and to amend the Personal Status Law,
she said, <We expect to reap the fruits of these efforts this year. Last
year, feminist organizations achieved significant gains and successes by
submitting the draft uniform law for combating violence against women.
The current laws contain issues regarding women's freedom. Women demand
the complete amendments of laws, not a patch. Women’s role cannot be
ignored anymore; if the number of women had not increased in the
Parliament, feminist organizations would not have been able to submit
the draft uniform law to the parliament.>
'Women have shaken the throne of the patriarchal mindset'
Despite the gains of the feminist organizations, Abeer Hamdy thinks that
there is not strong influence or development regarding the laws in
society. <I can say that women have shaken the throne of the patriarchal
mindset. Women report violence against them more than previous years.
Now, they speak out against sexual abuse.> Lamia Farouk Muhammad told
NuJINHA that feminist organizations carried out many activities for the
amendments of the Personal Status Law last year. “Feminist organizations
made great efforts to discuss the draft uniform law for combating
violence against women. I think that many organizations in the country
did their best to ensure a fair legislature.> >>
