<<Moroccan women activists: It's time to achieve more gains
<It's time to achieve more gains,> said Moroccan women activists, who
think the election of Omar Zniber as the president of the UN Human
Rights Council for 2024 as a positive development.
Morocco- On January 10, 2024, the UN Human Rights Council elected
Ambassador Omar Zniber, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the
United Nations Office at Geneva, to serve as its President for 2024.
Since this announcement, Moroccan women's organizations have taken
important steps to turn this development into an opportunity for
demanding the amendments of laws in accordance with all international
conventions, especially the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms
of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The coalition of the Spring of
Dignity, composed of many women's organizations and associations in
Morocco, has urged the Moroccan government to uphold its obligations
under international conventions by protecting freedoms, women’s rights,
eliminating gender discrimination and decriminalizing abortion. They
have also demanded the amendment of Law 103-13 on the elimination of
violence against women in Morocco and a comprehensive that will protect
women from violence. NuJINHA spoke to several women activists in Morocco
about the election of Omar Zniber as the president of the UN Human
Rights Council for 2024.
'We should set an example at the global level'
Samira Mohya, president of the Federation of Women's Rights League,
thinks that the best way for Morocco to gain a reputation and
credibility at the international level is to promote human rights in the
country. <It is our duty to pay more attention to human rights in our
country in order to set an example at the global level. In order to
promote human rights in our country, we should first promote women's
rights. Morocco should amend all its laws and legislation according to
the international conventions.>
'It is an opportunity'
Samira Mohya thinks that the election of Omar Zniber as the president of
the UN Human Rights Council for 2024 is an opportunity for Morocco to
amend Morocco's family code that will respect human rights, equality and
parity. Women's organizations have already held workshops on the
amendment of the family code. This is a test for Morocco for promoting
human rights.>
'It's time to achieve more gains'
Aisha Al Hayyan, lawyer and president of the Union of Feminist Action,
thinks that the election of Omar Zniber as the president of the UN Human
Rights Council for 2024 is the beginning of the long road to promote
human rights and women's rights in Morocco. <Morocco has already
established many rights in areas such as equality and fundamental
rights. It’s time to achieve more gains.>
'We have to make more efforts to promote human rights'
<Politicians, NGOs and activists have to make more efforts to empower
women in all facets of life,> said Aisha Al-Kalaa, president of the
Moroccan Association for Victims' Rights. <Morocco can set an example by
upholding its obligations. Morocco has been involved in the
international human rights system. Morocco has already achieved many
gains, the Equity and Reconciliation Commission is one of them. Now, we
have to make more efforts to promote human rights and women's rights in
order to guarantee their dignity in society.> >>

<<'The Turkish state has committed crimes against humanity in Afrin'
<The Turkish state has committed crimes against humanity in Afrin,> said
Zelux Bekir, Co-chair of the Education Institution in Afrin-Shahba
Canton, condemning the silence of the international community.
Shahba- In 2018, Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions occupied
Afrin. The Turkish occupation of Afrin displaced thousands in Afrin.
Most of the displaced people of Afrin have been staying in the
internally displaced people camps in Shahba since 2018. In an interview
with NuJINHA, Zelux Bekir, Co-chair of the Education Institution in
Afrin-Shahba Canton, talked about the inhuman practices faced by the
people of Afrin.
'The Turkish state has committed crimes against humanity in Afrin'
The Turkish state started its attacks on Afrin after Russia withdrew its
troops from Afrin.
<The withdrawal of Russia's troops shows us how the interests of
capitalist countries are the same. The war policies implemented in North
and East Syria aim to destroy the system based on democracy and the
unity of people. Since the Turkish state occupied Afrin, it has
committed crimes against humanity in Afrin to change the demographic
structure of the region. The aim of the capitalist regimes, whether
regional or international, is to control the Middle East.>
<The people of Afrin resist despite all the difficulties'
Pointing to the resistance of the people of Afrin against the Turkish
state and Turkish-backed factions, Zelux Bekir said, <The people of
Afrin showed great resistance. Now, they resist in camps despite all the
difficulties faced by them in the camps. Their resistance and
determination frustrate all kinds of oppression. Despite the anti-human
policies of the anti-democratic and capitalist regimes and the silence
of the international community, they resist and struggle.>
'The people resist the Turkish attacks'
Since the Turkish state occupied Afrin, it has carried out attacks on
other parts of North and East Syria, Zelux Bekir said:
<During the revolution, also known as Arab Spring, people took to the
streets in many Middle Eastern countries to demand a free and democratic
life. However, their hopes were frustrated due to the conspiracies of
foreign countries. The aim of the Turkish state is to revive the Ottoman
Empire. The people of North and East Syria resist the Turkish attacks
despite everything.> >>

could not enjoy my childhood. Now, I am an adult woman but I still do
not have a happy life. I wanted to go to school but I was forced into
marriage. Child marriage is a crime against children. I call on all
parents to send their daughters to school, not to marry off them. They
should support their daughters to achieve their goals.>

courses learn both theoretical and practical knowledge to deal with
first aid emergencies.

difficulties faced by them,> said Jawaher Ezzo, member of the foundation
and a resident of the camp. <We organize vocational and training courses
for women.> The foundation also provides job opportunities for women so
that they can play an active role in society. <Our aim is to reach all
women in the camp. Women come together thanks to communes in the camp.
In addition to vocational and training courses, we also organize
literacy courses. Each course lasts a month. Women receive certificates
after completing the courses.>
'Women participate in the labor force after completing the courses'
Speaking about the first aid training courses, Jawaher Ezzo said, <The

<<Support from Tunisian women to women of Gaza
Thousands of volunteers have joined the ranks of the Tunisian Red
Crescent since a campaign calling for donations for Palestinians
launched in the country. Tunisian women collect donations and
humanitarian supplies to support the women of Gaza.
Tunisia- Since a national campaign calling for donations for
Palestinians launched in Tunisia, many Tunisian women have joined the
ranks of the Tunisian Red Crescent, NGOs and governmental organizations
to collect donations and humanitarian supplies for defenseless civilians
in the Gaza Strip in order to be in solidarity with the women of Gaza.
<Tunisian women have played an important role in collecting humanitarian
supplies since the campaign was launched in the country,> said Buthaina
Qaraqba, Spokesperson of the Tunisian Red Crescent. <Tunisian women did
not hesitate to support this campaign. They have collected donations and
humanitarian supplies. They assist Tunisian Red Crescent crews in
packing and taping up cardboard boxes of humanitarian supplies that will
be sent to the women and children of Gaza. They also encourage children
to support the campaign. They visit schools and tell children how
humanitarian aid is important.>
'They work as volunteers'
Tunisian women work as volunteers despite all the difficulties, Buthaina
Qaraqba added. <Tunisian women are strong women. They also worked as
volunteers to provide humanitarian supplies to earthquake survivors when
an earthquake that struck northern Syria on February 6 and to the people
displaced by the floods devastated Libya's eastern city of Derna.>
Speaking about her volunteer experiences, she said, <I have worked for
the Tunisian Red Crescent as a volunteer for more than 20 years. I
balance time between my work and my children. My children always provide
psychological support to me.>
'The campaign was launched on October 9'
Speaking about the national campaign, she said, <The campaign was
launched on October 9. The first plane loaded with 12 tons of medical
supplies, antibiotics, resuscitation and emergency medications was sent
to Palestine. Then, another plane loaded with 12 tons of food, infant
formula, and medicines was sent to Palestine.>
They also provide support to injured Palestinians in Tunisia
Since October 7, many injured Palestinians have been brought to Tunisia
for treatment. The Tunisian Red Crescent provides both financial and
psychological support to them. <According to the figures, more than
two-thirds of the injured are children. Women and children are targeted
in this war because they are the future of Palestine. Israel targets
women and children because it aims to destroy the future of Palestine.
The injured people suffer from not only physical disabilities but also
psychological problems. We do our best to provide psychological support
to them.>
Buthaina Qaraqba thinks that what is happening in Gaza poses a threat to
not only Palestinian children but also children all around the world.
<Children follow what is happening in Gaza on social media platforms and
they do not understand why children are killed in Gaza because they do
not know what war is. My daughter always asks me why children are killed
in Gaza. It is a difficult question to answer.>
Call for solidarity
At the end of her speech, Buthaina Qaraqba called on all women to be in
solidarity with the women of Gaza. <The volunteers of the Palestinian
Red Crescent play an important role. They work day and night to support
people in hospitals and camps. We call on all human rights organizations
to reveal the violations and crimes committed against civilians in
Gaza.> >>
