Kurdish women stand for education
Jinha - 12 Jan 2024
<<Education program started in memory of 3 Kurdish women politicians continues
<We will keep Sakine Cansız alive in our thoughts and personality and maintain her resistance,> said women participating in the education program started by Kongra Star Education Committee in memory of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Dogan and Leyla Şaylamez.
Hasakah- Kongra Star Education Committee started an education program on January 7, 2024 in memory of Sakine Cansız, Fidan Dogan and Leyla Şaylamez, three Kurdish women politicians, who were murdered in Paris 11 years ago. The education program attended by 23 women will last 22 days. The education program is about life stories of the three Kurdish women politicians, women's history, the change of patriarchal mindset, the importance of education for women, Jineology, the system of Kongra Star and common life.
'We learn the truth'
Xezal Berkel, one of the women participating in the education program, believes that people can learn the truth, science and history through education. <People can learn more about themselves through education. Women's participation in the education program is important because they play an important role in society. Women should always improve themselves and learn more about science to become leaders in their society,> said Xezal Berkel.
'We will keep Sakine Cansız alive in our thoughts'
Through the education program, we will revive the spirit of Sakine Cansız, Xezal Berkel said, adding, <We will keep Sakine Cansız alive in our thoughts and personality and maintain her resistance. As we learn life stories of Sakine Cansız and her comrades, we understand why they fight and why we should follow in their footsteps. We will organize ourselves and our society to honor our martyrs.>
'We will improve ourselves in science'
The ideology and thoughts of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan shed light on all women, said Hîba Elî, another woman participating in the education program. Hiba Eli told us that she decided to participate in the education program to strengthen her personality. <The system in North and East Syria is based on democracy and equality. For this reason, education is very important and the light of life for us. As Arab women, we see the light of life in the philosophy of Abdullah Ocalan. We will improve ourselves in science and all facets of life in order to be worthy of this philosophy.> >>

Women fighting against mutilation
Jinha - 12 Jan 2024 - by ASMAA FATHI
<<'More efforts are needed to eliminate female genital mutilation'
Female genital mutilation and child marriage are prevalent in Egypt despite the legal change and increased penalties. More efforts are needed to eliminate them, says lawyer Naour Al-Huda Wali-Al-Din.
Cairo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a form of violence against women, is still performed in many countries. Egypt is one of the countries, where FGM is prevalent despite the legal change and increased penalties.
'No complaints are filed against the perpetrators'
In 2021, Egypt's parliament approved amendments, increasing the maximum and minimum prison sentences imposed on FGM crimes. Those who perform genital mutilation can face between 10 and 15 years in prison. Despite the amendments, FGM is still performed in the country. <No complaints are filed against the perpetrators because the perpetrators of this crime are usually family members or the breadwinners of families. The victims do not file a complaint because they think about the future of their family,> said Naour Al-Huda Wali Al-Din, a lawyer in Egypt.
'FGM is rooted in culture'
In Egypt, FGM is rooted in culture and some believe it is performed for religious reasons. <Changing this culture takes a long time. More efforts are needed to eliminate it. Awareness-raising activities are very important to change this culture. Many women’s organizations carry out awareness-raising activities against FGM.> Nour Al-Huda Wali Al-Din believes that schools should address the physical and emotional damage caused by FGM. <We should raise children, who are aware of the physical and emotional damage caused by FGM, to end FGM. We should visit house by house to raise awareness.>
'More awareness-raising activities should be carried out in Upper Egypt'
FGM and child marriage are considered <normal> in Upper Egypt and rural areas, said women's rights activist Fayrouz Ahmed, pointing to the awareness-raising activities of women's organizations to eliminate FGM and child marriage. <More awareness-raising activities should be carried out in Upper Egypt and rural areas. The activities should be carried out for not only women but also family members. Poverty is the main reason behind child marriage and early marriages in rural areas as most families are poor. Some families marry off their daughters to reduce their economic burden.> >>

<<Kongra Star to open health center in Qamishlo
Kongra Star Health Committee will open a health center in the Qidurbek neighborhood of Qamishlo. The health center will provide service to women and hold women's health courses.
Qamishlo- Kongra Star Health Committee will soon open a health center for women and children in the Qidurbek neighborhood of Qamishlo, a city in the Jazira Canton of North and East Syria. The center will be opened 10 days later, said Mehfuza Ehmed, a member of the committee. <The purpose of opening the center is to provide health service to women and children in the neighborhood because there is no health center near the neighborhood. Women have to take their children to hospitals far away from the neighborhood. We currently provide health courses such as prenatal courses to women,> she told NuJINHA.
Doctors and medical supplies are ready
The health center will have two departments; one for women and the other for children. <The center will have its own pharmacy. Doctors and medical supplies of the center are ready. The Martyr Mihemed Salih Commune supported us to build a health center in the neighborhood,> said Mehfûza Ehmed, indicating that every woman should receive education to do useful work for her society. <Women should improve themselves, not waste their time. As women, we should contribute to the development of our society. Every woman should receive education, improve herself and work.>
'All employees received training'
Sita Mustefa, another member of the committee, thinks that the economic crisis has affected the health sector the most. <Everything is getting more expensive and people are getting poorer. People suffer from the increase in drug prices. We decided to open a health center in the neighborhood to support women and children. Six health care workers will work at the center. All employees received training. I want every woman to participate in the labor force. There is no difference between men and women, women should believe in themselves.> >>

Gaza infected
Jinha - 11 Jan 2024
<<People of Gaza struggle against infectious diseases and hunger
The number of killed and injured people in Israel's war on Gaza has kept rising. The people of Gaza struggle against ongoing Israel's attacks, infectious diseases and hunger.
News Center- At least 23,357 Palestinians have been killed, 59,410 injured in the Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7, according to the Gaza's health ministry. According to local reports, seven people were killed and 25 people, including women and children were injured in Israeli airstrikes on the village of Ebu Namus, east of Khan Yunis Governorate, and five civilians were killed and dozens injured in Israeli airstrikes targeting a house and a shelter of displaced people in the north of the city of Rafah.
Call on the international community
An Israeli airstrike targeted a house near the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the city of Deir al-Balah, Gaza's government media office said in a statement. At least 40 people were killed and injured in the airstrike, said the statement, adding, <There is no safe zone in Gaza.> The media office also called on the international community to stop the genocide against civilians, children and women in Gaza.
'The health sector in Gaza is being slowly choked off'
Martin Griffiths, UN Humanitarian Chief, released a statement on his social media account. <The health sector in Gaza is being slowly choked off as hospitals continue to come under fire. And what happens when the health system collapses? Pregnant women can't deliver their babies safely. The sick and wounded can't get treatment. People die. This war needs to end,> he wrote.
Three hospitals at the risk of closures
<The ongoing hostilities in Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis - coupled with evacuation orders in nearby areas - are putting three hospitals at the risk of closures: Al-Aqsa, Nasser and the Gaza European hospital,> UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Wednesday at a press conference. <Some 350,000 people with chronic illnesses and about 485,000 people with mental health disorders continue to experience disruptions in their treatments in Gaza. Some 1.9 million displaced people are at risk of communicable diseases because of poor living conditions, overcrowded shelters, and lack of access to proper water, sanitation and hygiene facilities,> Stephane Dujarric said.
45% people experience severe hunger in Gaza
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territories, wrote on X that 45% people experience severe hunger in Gaza. <In some areas 9 out of 10 families go 24h without food.> >>

<<Women of Sweida: The economic collapse affects all sectors
The women of Sweida think that Syria has been suffering from an economic collapse in recent years due to the government's policies and that the economic collapse affects all sectors.
Sweida- The peaceful protests erupted in the Druze majority city of Sweida over the high inflation rate and deteriorating economic situation in Syria on August 17, 2023 continue. The people of Sweida have gathered at the Karama Square of Sweida to voice their demands. Activist Amina Abu Assaf thinks that the deteriorating economic situation in Syria, the falling value of Syrian pound against the dollar are an indicator of the collapse of the country's economy. Pointing to the high prices of products, she said, <Our salaries are insufficient to cover even our daily transportation costs. High prices have forced many workers to quit their jobs to work in the free labor market. Many teachers do private tutoring outside of school to cover their daily expenses.>
'The health sector is most affected'
Amina Abu Assaf also talked about high fuel prices. <Many bakeries, laboratories and factories in the city have been closed down due to high fuel prices. The health sector is most affected by the economic collapse; many healthcare workers have moved to other cities, there is an increase in the prices of drugs and people cannot find drugs at pharmacies. Farmers use wastewater to irrigate crops. In addition to the water shortage, the farmers suffer from high costs of agricultural fertilizer and feed.> >>

<<Support from Manbij to political prisoners on hunger strike
Speaking about the international campaign demanding freedom for Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan, Zahida İshak called on everyone to support the hunger strike started by political prisoners in Kurdistan and Turkey.
Manbij- On October 10, 2023, an international campaign titled, <Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan, political solution to the Kurdish issue> was launched and 74 press conferences demanding the freedom for Abdullah Ocalan were held around the world on the same day to mark the beginning of the campaign. People from different countries have already expressed their support for the campaign. All institutions and organizations in North and East Syria have held many activities, marches and events as part of the campaign. NuJINHA spoke to Zahida Ishak, executive of the Autonomous Administration Educational Committee in Manbij, northeastern Syria, about the international campaign demanding freedom for Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan and a political solution to the Kurdish issue.
'They are afraid of the thoughts of leader Öcalan'
Pointing out that the campaign brought many figures, institutions and organizations in the world, Zahida İshak said, <The Turkish state has imposed an aggravated isolation on leader Ocalan by not allowing him to see his family members and his lawyers. All these arbitrary practices are to prevent leader Ocalan's thoughts from reaching the people. The capitalist countries are afraid of the thoughts of leader Ocalan. <This campaign is not the first campaign demanding the lift of the isolation imposed on leader Ocalan. The difference between this campaign and previous campaigns is that people from different countries have expressed their support for the latest campaign. This campaign has proved that the thoughts of leader Abdullah Ocalan are accepted by many people and not limited to a region.>
'Resistance is the best response'
Mentioning the impact of Abdullah Ocalan's thoughts and ideology on many societies, Zahida İshak said, <Oppressed people are used to resistance. Today, a hunger strike has been started in prisons with the participation of women. However, the international community remains silent against the hunger strike. The hunger strikers need solidarity. Young people, women and all societies should further spread the thoughts and ideology of leader Ocalan against war policies. Resistance is the best response to these policies.> >>

<<'Prison administration forces prisoners on hunger strike to serve food'
The prisoners on hunger strike in Antalya L-type Prison are given only water, face disciplinary punishments and forced to serve food to ordinary prisoners, their relatives say.
Amed- On November 27, 2023, political prisoners in 104 prisons across Turkey started a rotational hunger strike, demanding <freedom for Abdullah Ocalan and a resolution to the Kurdish question>. Since then, the hunger strikers have been subjected to many rights violations and not given vitamins, salt, coffee or juice. In Antalya L-type Prison, the political prisoners on hunger strike are reportedly forced to serve food to ordinary prisoners.
She was allowed to see her son after holding a sit-in
Last week, Afife Kartal went to Antalya L-type Prison to visit her son Muhammed Kartal; however, she was told, <You cannot see your son, he receives a disciplinary punishment.> Then, she was allowed to see her son after holding a sit-in in front of the prison.
'They are threatened to serve food to ordinary prisoners'
Despite the crackdown of the prison administration, the hunger strikers' morale and motivation are high, Afife Kartal said. <I felt better when I saw them like that. They have been losing weight. My son was on strike for 10 days and I learned that he lost seven kilos in 10 days. The hunger strikers are not given sugar, salt or coffee; they are only given water. The hunger strikers were told, 'You will serve food to ordinary prisoners'. When they refused, they were threatened to 'be tortured'.>
'We do not accept this injustice'
Afife Kartal told us that they would never accept the crackdown and injustice against the hunger strikers. <We do not accept this injustice on our children and their families. They demand the isolation be lifted. We do not accept the isolation imposed on Imrali and other prisons. Families should be allowed to see their relatives in prison. This is a humanitarian demand.>
'A step should be immediately taken'
When Meymenet Boz visited her son in Amed (Diyarbakır) T-type Prison, she learned that the hunger strikers were only given water. <My son waits for his turn to go on hunger strike. As mothers, we demand the isolation be lifted. A step should be immediately taken to lift the isolation. As mothers, we hold a sit-in here to be a voice for our children.>
'We should not be left alone'
Meymenet Boz called on the Kurdish people to support them. <The political prisoners took action when they saw that people outside did nothing. We should not be left alone. Everyone should come here to support us.> >>

Leyla Arzu Ilhan
Jinha - 10 Jan 2024 - by BERJIN KARA
<<'We must strengthen the struggle and make it successful with Sara's spirit of resistance'
Speaking about Sakine Cansız's life full of struggle, Leyla Arzu Ilhan, member of the Iştar Assembly in the Makhmour refugee camp, said, <We must strengthen the struggle and make it successful with Sara's spirit of resistance.>
Makhmour- On January 9, 2013, three Kurdish politicians, Sakine Cansız (Sara), Fidan Dogan (Rojbîn) and Leyla Şaylemez (Ronahi), were murdered in Paris by the Turkish state. Although 11 years have passed since the massacre, French authorities confirm its cooperation with the Turkish state with their silence by not trying the perpetrators. This massacre revealed how the Turkish state is afraid of the women's freedom movement. NuJINHAspoke to Leyla Arzu Ilhan, member of the İştar Assembly in the Martyr Rustem Cudi Camp (Makhmour Refugee Camp), about the personality, stance and struggle of Sakine Cansız, one of the pioneers of the Kurdish women's movement. <When you spent time with Sara, you could see the pain that the ruling power inflicts on Kurdish women. Comrade Sara was from a place where Kurdish women and girls threw themselves from the cliffs not to be taken captive by the invaders and to prevent their bodies, souls and hopes from being destroyed. She was from Dersim. The people of Dersim never accept surrender. When the Middle East was remapped and Kurdistan was divided into four parts, a massacre was conducted in Dersim because the people of Dersim did not step back from their resistance. Comrade Sara grew up by listening to the painful stories of the massacre. Her books tell of her resistance before the PKK was founded. When you read her books, you can see how she fought state oppression and the ruling system.>
'Her whole life was a struggle'
Sakine Cansız rose up against oppression imposed on society in her childhood, Leyla Arzu Ilhan said. <In her book, she wrote, 'There was something I wasn't happy with but I didn't know what I wasn't happy with.' After the establishment of the PKK and the emergence of Leader Apo (Abdullah Ocalan), the Kurds woke up from their sleep. It was also a great chance for comrade Sara. Her whole life was a struggle.>
'Women led the revolution for freedom'
Speaking about the situation of Kurdish women in the 80s, Leyla Arzu Ilhan said, <At that time, Kurdish people could not name their children in their own language. Many Kurdish women like comrade Sara led the Kurdish people's revolution for freedom. Comrade Sara never accepted the system imposed on us by the rulers and fought against it. When we read the life story of comrade Sara, we see that the military junta in Turkey targeted not only the people in Kurdistan, but also Kurdistan, particularly in the 80s.> When Sakine Cansız was targeted in Paris, the ideology of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan was targeted because his ideology is based on women's freedom, Leyla Arzu Ilhan highlighted. <Today, the paradigm of leader Apo is embraced not only by the Kurdish people or Kurdish women but also women all around the world. Today, Arab women struggle against the system in North and East Syria thanks to this paradigm. Women, particularly Latin American women, gather around the thoughts and ideology of leader Apo because they want to live free.>
'The enemy always tries to intimidate women struggling for freedom'
Leyla Arzu Ilhan noted that the Turkish state and the powers that want to eliminate the women's freedom movement have always targeted the pioneers of the Kurdish women's freedom movement. <The enemy always tries to intimidate women struggling for freedom. The Turkish state aims to destroy the women's freedom struggle by targeting pioneering women.>
'We must strengthen the struggle'
Leyla Arzu Ilhan emphasized that they would strengthen the struggle of Sakine Cansız and Evin Goyi. <We must strengthen the struggle and make it successful with Sara's spirit of resistance to achieve freedom and peace.> >>

<<'Women can realize their dreams by breaking the cycle of violence'
The Bar Aman Initiative in Alexandria has held storytelling workshops for survivors of violence to <break the silence> on sexual and gender-based violence.
Cairo- The Bar Aman Initiative in Alexandria, non-profit feminist initiative that works on raising awareness about women's issues and gender-based violence, and providing support to girls and women, has held storytelling workshops for survivors of violence to break the silence on sexual and gender-based violence. Participating in the workshops, survivors of gender-based violence tell and share their real stories. NuJINHA spoke to Mayar Makki, founder of the initiative, about the workshops. <We realize that survivors can overcome the trauma by telling their stories to others. Women participating in the workshops do not see themselves as victims anymore. This is a great step to break the silence on all forms of gender-based violence,> she told us. Recently, many NGOs have held storytelling workshops for survivors of gender-based violence in Egypt. <The NGOs have held workshops to support the survivors of gender-based violence. These workshops play an important role for women to express themselves more easily.>
'These workshops encourage women'
<Perhaps, I will participate in the workshop again because I am completely forbidden from going out,> one of the women participating in the storytelling workshops told Mayar Makki during a workshop. <Women suffer in silence. These workshops encourage women to tell their stories. Some women managed to rebuild their life by overcoming the trauma by telling their stories. The successful experiences of these women impress me. One of the participants of a workshop was a girl, who was subjected to domestic violence. Her parents broke her hands and arms to prevent her from going to school. We provided financial support to her and she completed her education. Despite everything, she managed to build a life for herself.>
'Breaking the cycle of violence is important'
The initiative also supported a girl, who wanted to be a journalist but was prevented by her family. <Now, she is a successful journalist. Such stories inspire other girls and women. Breaking the cycle of violence is important. Women and girls can realize their dreams by breaking gender stereotypes and the cycle of violence.> >>

<<Salwa Latif: 'We must make our voices heard'
<As women, we must rebuild our society. We must be stronger, make our voices heard and make efforts for our rights,> said Salwa Latif, director of the National Union of Tunisian Women branch in Sousse.
Tunisia- Salwa Latif, director of the National Union of Tunisian Women branch in Sousse, emphasizes that gender-based violence continues to spread in all facets of life in Tunisia despite Law 58 of 2017 protecting women from violence.
'Women are forced to remain silent against violence'
The National Union of Tunisian Women provides legal support to women survivors of violence.
<Many women are subjected to domestic violence and often have to remain silent for fear of being ‘left on the street’. They are afraid of being homeless, without shelter. They remain silent to stay at home.> Salwa Latif told the story of a woman, who was subjected to domestic violence by her husband. <She did not file a criminal complaint against him because she could not afford to cover the expenses and had no place to stay.>
'Women do not receive equal pay for equal work'
Women are also subjected to violence at work, Salwa Latif said. <Women do not receive equal pay for equal work. Due to the existence of a mentality that discriminates between men and women, we work in cooperation with the Labor Union and some officials to defend the rights of working women.> The union also works in cooperation with other women's organizations in Tunisia to defend women's rights. <We have held training courses for women in rural areas because these women need more support.>
'We must make more efforts for our rights'
Speaking about women's political participation in Tunisia, she said, <I believe that women can contribute to political life more than men because they achieve academic success and they are intelligent.> Salwa Latif called on women in Sousse and in other governorates of Tunisia to <rebuild our society together. As women, we must be stronger, make our voices heard and make efforts for our rights.> >>

News Center- The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has released its <Afghanistan Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan 2024 Summary>. <An estimated 23.7 million people-more than half of Afghanistan's population-will require humanitarian assistance to survive in 2024 as the country continues to reel from decades of war and grapple with climate-induced crises, recurrent natural disasters, entrenched poverty, and barriers to women's participation in public life,> said the OCHA.

According to the OCHA, Afghanistan remains first and foremost a protection emergency characterized by high levels of protracted displacement, mine and explosive ordnance contamination, restricted freedom of movement, increased risks of gender-based violence, child labour and early marriage, and increased mental health and psychosocial support needs. <Women-headed households are the most vulnerable population group in Afghanistan today, with a higher reliance on ‘emergency’ livelihood coping strategies, increased reports of early marriage of daughters, and higher rates of food insecurity and child labour when compared to male-headed households. Nearly half of all Afghans live in poverty, with rates particularly high among women. Despite low-level economic stabilisation in 2023, 65 percent of families still experienced an economic shock. Fragile economic conditions are expected to continue to contribute to acute food insecurity in 2024, affecting 15.8 million people.> >>
