Taliban ban medical education for women
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 5, 2024
<<Taliban ban medical education for women
Several institutions that provide medical courses for women and girls in
Afghanistan have been instructed to close by the Taliban until further
notice.
News Center- Haibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban's supreme leader,
issued an order banning women and girls from receiving medical education
at a meeting of the Taliban Ministry of Public Health on Monday. Then,
the Taliban Ministry of Public Health summoned directors of private
medical training institutions to be instructed about the new order.
Female students of the medical institutions were ordered not to attend
classes on Wednesday.
The European Union on Wednesday condemned the Taliban for banning women
and girls in Afghanistan from receiving medical education. "The European
Union expresses its strong concerns over this decision and its
far-reaching implication, including the deepening of the humanitarian
crisis in Afghanistan and the exacerbation of the suffering of its
people," the UN said in a statement. Since regaining control of
Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban have banned women from attending
private and public universities, girls from attending secondary schools
beyond sixth grade and women from work, with few exceptions, such as in
the health sector.>>

Kurdish displacement in Shahba
Medyanews - December 5, 2024
<<Kurdish displacement in Shahba, Afrin sparks humanitarian crisis
As tensions escalate in northern Syria, the crisis facing Kurdish
refugees in the Shahba and Afrin regions has deepened. The
representative of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria
in Europe has called for both material and moral support to aid the
refugees. Prompt international intervention is imperative to mitigate
further suffering and displacement. Amid escalating tensions in northern
Syria and mounting threats from Turkish-backed groups, the displacement
crisis in the Shahba (Şehba) and Afrin (Efrin) regions has worsened. In
light of the massive displacement of Kurdish people, primarily former
refugees from Afrin, the European representative of the Autonomous
Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) released a statement,
asserting:
"The relentless assaults by armed factions in Aleppo have driven tens of
thousands of Kurdish families from Afrin-many of whom were already
residing in camps in al-Shahba and Tal Rifat-compelling them to seek
safety within the territories governed by the Autonomous Administration.
These individuals, including many children, face severe hardships amid
freezing conditions, inadequate shelter, and scarce resources. While the
autonomous administration and local relief committees are making
efforts, the needs far outweigh what is available. On behalf of the
Autonomous Administration in Europe, we urge our people in Europe to
join the support campaign we have launched. This initiative seeks to
ease the suffering of the displaced and address their most urgent
needs."
Sinam Mohamad, the US representative of the Syrian Democratic Forces' (SDF)
political wing, detailed the grave conditions faced by displaced
residents of Tel Rifaat. Speaking to Middle East Eye, she reported that
these individuals have been targeted by the Syrian National Army (SNA).
"To protect them, we relocated many to north-east Syria, including Tabqa,"
she explained. Mohamad condemned the "barbaric practices of the Islamic
State (ISIS) group and emphasised the importance of securing displaced
Kurds in their original areas, particularly Aleppo. However, local
reports indicate that HTS has besieged areas such as Sheikh Maqsoud and
Ashrafieh, leaving residents without food, water, electricity, or
internet.
Winter conditions and clashes harden a safe flee
Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) has reportedly issued an ultimatum to
Kurdish forces: "You can leave if you want, but those with homes,
businesses, or work here face an uncertain future," Mohamad said. She
voiced fears of reprisals against those linked to the YPG's political
wing, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), recalling the arrests of Kurds
in Afrin after its capture by rebels in 2018. Amid heightened tensions,
sources revealed to Al Arabiya that the Autonomous Administration is
preparing for the potential influx of hundreds of thousands of
individuals from Tel Rifaat, the Shahba region, and Aleppos (Heleb)
Sheikh Maqsoud and al-Ashrafiyah districts. In anticipation, efforts are
focused on establishing temporary camps and shelters in areas east of
the Euphrates River and Qamishli (Qamishlo) to accommodate the expected
wave of displaced populations.>>

Kurdish, Arab, Syriac women
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 5, 2024 - by RONIDA HACI
<<Kurdish, Arab, Syriac women: It's time to exist or disappear!
Kurdish, Arab and Syriac women in Hasakah say the recent attacks on
North and East Syria aim to destroy women's achievements, calling on
every woman to resist the attacks because "It's time to exist or
disappear."
Hasakah- On Sunday, the Autonomous Administration of North and East
Syria (AANES) declared a general mobilization in response to the ongoing
attacks in northeastern Syria. Kurdish, Arab and Syriac women in Hasakah
vow to protect the gains of the revolution in Rojava led by women.
'We must protect our gains'
"It's time to exist or disappear," said Rojin Eli, a Kurdish woman of
Hasakah. "Since the beginning of the Syrian war, we have resisted,
fought and made great efforts in the region. Thanks to the revolution,
we have achieved phenomenal successes. The recent attacks on Shahba,
Aleppo and Sheikh Maqsoud are the attacks against the will of people.
Although we have been going through a very sensitive process, we must
protect our gains because this process is also a process of existence."
Rojin Eli criticized the international silence against the attacks.
"Civilians are killed, injured and displaced. We condemn the
international silence against the attacks. We vow to resist the attacks
to the end."
'We will always support the SDF'
Newal Selum, a Syriac woman of Hasakah, thinks that the recent attacks
on the region started because the Syrian government refused the call of
the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) for a
dialogue. "The Autonomous Administration (of North and East Syria) has
always called on the Damascus (Syrian) government for a dialogue;
however, the Syrian regime has refused the calls because it pursues its
own interests. Due to the Damascus government, the people have been
subjected to genocidal attacks, displacement and siege. As the people of
the region, we must unite to defend our lands and ourselves. We will
always support the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces)." Xezna Ebud, an Arab
woman of Hasakah, describes the recent attacks as a "genocide". "The
attacks target the existence and identity of the people in the region,"
she emphasized, saying: "The Turkish-backed factions aim to divide Syria
by attacking Shahba, Aleppo and Sheikh Maqsoud and to destroy women's
achievements. Therefore, all women must rise up against the attacks and
defend themselves and their lands." >>

Women of Til Temir
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 5, 2024 - by SORGUL ŞEXO
<<Women of Til Temir protect their neighborhoods
Following the call for mobilization by the Autonomous Administration of
North and East Syria, women in the town of Til Temir started keeping a
watch at night to protect their neighborhoods.
Til Temir (Tell Tamer)- Following the attacks of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)
on the Syrian city of Aleppo, the Turkish state and Turkish-backed
factions such as Jabhat al-Nusra attacked the Afrin/Shahba canton,
hosting thousands of displaced people of Afrin. On Sunday, the
Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) declared a
general mobilization in response to the ongoing escalation in
northeastern Syria. On Monday, the Peoples' Assembly of Afrin/Shahba
issued a written statement, announcing that they decided to evacuate
civilians in the areas besieged by the Turkish-backed factions in order
to "protect civilians from a possible massacre". Following the
announcement, 200,000 displaced people of Afrin and thousands of Arabs
left Shahba and Aleppo countryside to Tabqa and Raqqa. Following the
call for mobilization by the AANES, women living in the town of Til
Temir, Cizir canton of North and East Syria, started keeping a watch at
night to protect their neighborhoods against a possible attack. "People
from all ages are ready to defend their neighborhoods," said Gulixan
Sofi, Co-chair of the Peoples' Assembly in Til Temir. "The enemy first
targets women. We know what happened to Yazidi and Afghan women; Yazidi
women were sold in slave markets. Therefore, women must first protect
themselves and then their society." Pointing to the attacks on the
Shahba region, she said, "Our town may also be attacked at any moment"
and called on women to support the defense forces and join the
resistance.
'We protect our neighborhood'
Yasmin Tamir, an Arab woman of Til Temir, received weapon training
several months ago. "I am currently a member of the Martyr Warşin
Commune. As a group of women, we protect our neighborhood," she told
NuJINHA. "Receiving weapons training is very important for us, women,
because we must be ready for all kinds of attacks."
'Women should join the YPJ'
Yasmin Tamir reacted to the war crimes committed against female fighters
in Shahba. "We are not afraid despite all the attacks. The videos
showing how the members of the factions committed war crimes against
female fighters cannot scare us; on the contrary, they make us stronger.
All women should join the YPJ to protect themselves and their lands." In
her speech, Yasmin Tamir called for an end to the war and said, "This
war should end now to protect people from displacement and massacres.
The people of the region have been subjected to such attacks since the
beginning of the Syrian crisis. We are against war but if there is war,
we must protect our cities and society. I call on the international
community not to remain silent against the ongoing attacks on North and
East Syria in order to prevent a possible genocide against women,
children and elderly." >>

Voices from the ground
Medyanews - December 4, 2024
<<Voices from the ground: Kurdish people leaving Shahba, northern Syria
Kurdish families fleeing Shahba (Şehba) after intense clashes have taken
refuge in areas controlled by the Autonomous Administration of North and
East Syria (AANES). Refugees describe military attacks, freezing
conditions, and inadequate aid as they await urgent assistance. Kurdish
families displaced by fierce clashes in Shahba (Şehba), northern Syria,
have fled to other areas under the Autonomous Administration of North
and East Syria (AANES). Refugees recount military attacks, injuries, and
severe cold as aid struggles to meet their needs. Ibrahim Shekso, a
Kurdish resident who fled Shahba and is now in Tabqa, described the dire
situation in a statement to Medya News on Tuesday evening. "The people
are in a really difficult situation, their needs have not yet been met,"
he said. "There are preparations, but so far not much has been done.
Some are even talking about schools, but there are none yet. Everything
is difficult in this situation." Shekso highlighted the agreement made
to assist evacuations: "An agreement has been reached between the Syrian
Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leadership
for three days to allow all the people to evacuate the area and move to
the areas under the control of the autonomous administration. This
agreement is a result of the last hours." He also described the attacks
that led to the mass displacement: "The people were targeted by military
attacks, and some were wounded. The clashes were really intense in the
whole area of Shahba. Towards Aleppo (Heleb) and eastern Aleppo fell
into the hands of the HTS and the Syrian opposition forces. That is why
the people were forced to flee." The co-chair of Afrin (Efrin) and
Shahba councils added that the influx of internally displaced persons (IDPs)
has left many sleeping outside in freezing temperatures for days. "AANES
hospitals are offering free care, but there is still an urgent need for
medical support," they said. With tens of thousands displaced, the need
for urgent humanitarian aid grows, particularly as resources remain
limited and harsh weather conditions worsen.>>

deadly shelling on Zamzam camp
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 4, 2024
<<UN deplores deadly shelling on Zamzam camp in Sudan
The United Nations have condemned deadly shelling on Zamzam camp, the
largest site for internally displaced people in the Darfur region of
Sudan.
News Center- The United Nations condemned deadly shelling on Zamzam
camp, the largest site for internally displaced people in the Darfur
region of Sudan. In a statement on Tuesday, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, UN
Resident Coordinator in Sudan, expressed her concern over humanitarian
aid organizations reports that Zamzam camp came under fire and intense
shelling during the evening of 1 December and again on 2 December.
"Civilians and civilian infrastructure are protected under international
humanitarian law and should never be a target," she underscored.
According to humanitarian organizations, the shelling killed at least
five people and injured 18, prompting the evacuation of a hospital and
the suspension of healthcare operations in the camp, which is located
near El Fasher, capital of North Darfur state. Zamzam camp, home to over
half a million displaced people, has faced severe shortages of critical
humanitarian supplies. "It is now 232 days since the siege of El Fasher
began, which has resulted in unacceptable levels of human suffering,"
said Clementine Nkweta-Salami.
Urgent call for action
"The UN and humanitarian partners have strongly condemned these attacks
on civilians and called for an immediate halt to violence," the
statement said. The conflict that started in Sudan between the Sudanese
Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces on April 15, 2023 has killed
thousands and displaced more than 11 million people.>>

<<Displaced women of Afrin: We will resist wherever we go
"The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions must know that we will
resist wherever we go," said the women of Afrin facing forced
displacement for the second time by the recent attacks on the Shahba
region.
News Center- The Turkish attacks on Afrin in 2018 displaced hundreds of
thousands from Afrim to the Shahba region. In Shahba, the displaced
women of Afrin rebuilt a new life and struggled to return to their
homeland despite the attacks of the Turkish state and Turkish-backed
factions and the siege imposed by the Syrian government. However, the
recent attacks on the region forced them to displace again. On November
26, 2024, the Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched an offensive in
Aleppo. Several days later, the Turkish forces and Turkish-backed
factions started attacking the town of Til Temir, also known as Tell
Tamer, the Shahba region and the Aleppo countryside, displacing the
people of Afrin again. Despite being displaced for the second time, the
women of Afrin, who arrived in the city of Tabqa, are determined to
resist, calling on the international community not to remain silent
against the attacks.
'Kurds must raise their voices everywhere'
"We were forcibly displaced from Afrin to Shahba in 2018 by the Turkish
state and Turkish-backed factions," said Rûken Mihemed Hebesh, a
displaced woman of Afrin. "However, they have been attacking Shahba and
displaced us for the second time. We do not understand what the Turkish
state wants from us. Kurds must take to the streets and raise their
voices against the attacks everywhere."
'We stand with the fighters'
Emine Eli was also displaced from Afrin in 2018 when the city was
occupied by the Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions. "We had to
leave our homeland due to the occupation of the Turkish state. My house
in Afrin was destroyed. We resisted in Shahba for seven years despite
all the difficulties in hope of returning to Afrin one day. On the day
of the attack, the members of the factions entered our house and broke
my son's leg. The international community must see what has been going
on here and stand against the attacks. We will fight to the last drop of
blood and we stand with the (Kurdish) fighters."
"The Autonomous Administration brought us here to protect us"
"The Turkish state and Turkish-backed factions attacked us in 2018 when
we were at home in Afrin," said another displaced woman of Afrin. "The
people, who still live in Afrin, have been subjected to many rights
violations and oppression by the factions. I do not understand why the
whole world remains silent against these inhumane attacks. Don't the
people who talk about democracy and freedom every day see what we have
been going through? The Autonomous Administration (of North and East
Syria) brought us here to protect us. We are protected here."
'They aim to tear us away from our roots'
"They (The Turkish state and its armed factions) aim to tear us away
from our roots," said another displaced woman of Afrin. "They think they
can occupy our thoughts and our souls by occupying our lands. The
Turkish state and its factions must know very well that our roots
protect us and that they cannot occupy our thoughts and our souls. We
will resist wherever we go." >>

Femicide
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 4, 2024
<<Turkiye: Men killed 32 women in November
In November 2024, 32 women were killed by men and 26 more died under
suspicious circumstances in Turkiye, said a report released by the We
Will Stop Femicide Platform.
Istanbul- We Will Stop Femicide Platform (Kadın Cinayetlerini
Durduracagız Platformu-KCDP) has released its November 2024 report on
femicide in Türkiye. 32 women were killed by men and 26 more died under
suspicious circumstances in November, the report said. According to the
report, seven women were killed by men on the excuse that they had asked
for a divorce, refused marriage or dating proposals and the excuses of
men, who killed 23 women could not be determined.
'Violence against women continues by changing its forms'
"The reason why we could not determine the excuses of men, who killed 23
women, is that violence against women and femicide are invisible.
Without the determination of the reasons behind femicide, the fair trial
and preventive measures, violence against women continues by changing
its forms," the platform said.>>

Peace Mothers
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 4, 2024 - by MEDINE MAMEDOGLU
<<Peace Mothers: We stand with the people of Rojava
"We stand with the people of Rojava," the members of the Peace Mothers'
Assembly in Amed said, commenting on the recent attacks on North and
East Syria.
Amed (Diyarbakır)- The recent attacks on North and East Syria and Aleppo
by armed groups continue to spark outrage all around the world,
especially among the Kurdish people. "We will defend Rojava with the
spirit of Kobane," said the members of the Peace Mothers' Assembly in
Amed, expressing their support to the people of Rojava.
'They cannot make peace by attacking'
In an interview with NuJINHA, Şaide Hayme, member of the Peace Mothers'
Assembly in Amed, called for an end to bloodshed and wars. "The attacks
on Rojava will fail, just like before," she said. "How long will these
greedy people keep bargaining over the Kurdish people and their gains?
The whole world has become hostile to the Kurds, aiming to annihilate
them. Assad fled his country without fighting. Their only concern is the
Kurdish people and their gains. They aim to destroy the gains of the
Kurdish people and slaughter the Kurds. They want the people of the
region to surrender to them. But the Kurdish people of all ages will
never surrender. Today, the people of Aleppo and Rojava fight to defend
themselves. Even mothers take up weapons to protect their children. All
countries play a role in the recent attacks. We always stand with the
people of Rojava. The attacks and chaos must end so that children are
not slaughtered and blood is not shed anymore."
'They will lose'
Nafiye Yigit, another member of the assembly, believes that peace can be
achieved in the Middle East if the isolation imposed on Kurdish leader
Abdullah Ocalan is lifted. "As mothers demanding peace, we will never
leave the people of Rojava alone," she said, criticizing the Turkish
state for targeting Rojava while talking about a new peace process. "If
they (Turkish government) want to start a new peace progress, they
should first lift the isolation imposed on Kurdish leader Abdullah
Ocalan because he is the key to peace and solution. Today, the whole
world knows the Kurdish people. Tanks and weapons cannot intimidate the
Kurdish people."
'The Kurds cannot be annihilated'
The Kurds cannot be annihilated, Nafiye Yigit emphasized. "We exist and
we always stand by our cause. As a mother, I call on everyone to stand
for peace."
'They aim to do what they could not before'
"Many people sacrificed their lives to build Rojava and the enemies of
the Kurds now target the gains of the Kurdish people," said Turkan Duman,
member of the assembly. "10 years ago, the enemies tried to occupy
Rojava but the people of Rojava did not allow them. Those who were
defeated in Kobanê aim to do what they could not before. Today, all
systems aim to revive ISIS. They have united to annihilate the Kurdish
people but they will never achieve their goal. We resisted in Kobanê and
now we resist again. We cannot sleep while our people are fighting in
Rojava. If we had the opportunity, we would go there to support them. We
stand with the people of Rojava and we will do our best to support
them." >>

Rojda Osman
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 4, 2024 - by RONIDA HACI
<<'The attacks target the gains of the women's revolution'
"The Kurds will resist everywhere," said Rojda Osman, stressing that the
attacks on North and East Syria target the gains of the women's
revolution.
Hasakah- Following the attacks of Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) on the
Syrian city of Aleppo, the Turkish state and Turkish backed factions
attacked the Afrin/Shahba canton, hosting thousands of displaced people
of Afrin. Meanwhile, the Turkish state kept attacking Manbij and Til
Temir, also known as Tell Tamer. On Sunday, the Autonomous
Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) declared mobilization
against the attacks in northwestern Syria. On Monday, the Peoples'
Assembly of Afrin/Shahba issued a written statement, announcing that
they decided to evacuate civilians in the areas besieged by the
Turkish-backed factions in order to "protect civilians from a possible
massacre". Following the announcement, 200,000 displaced people of Afrin
and thousands of Arabs left Shahba and Aleppo countryside to Tabqa and
Raqqa.
'Their aim is to slaughter the Kurdish people'
Rojda Osman, member of the Democratic Society Academies, believes that
the aim of the recent attacks is to divide Syria. "The people of North
and East Syria have been struggling, resisting and facing forced
displacement for 12 years," she said. "The recent attacks on Aleppo,
Shahba and Til Temir aim to slaughter the Kurdish people."
'The attacks are against the gains of the women's revolution'
Rojda Osman thinks that the Syrian government does not fulfill its
duties and responsibility, waving the way for the recent attacks on
Aleppo's Shahba region and Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood. "We must resist
and protect ourselves and our system. The recent developments pose a
risk to all people in Syria. The Damascus (Syrian) government's refusal
to accept dialogue with the Autonomous Administration paved the way for
massacres and attacks. The Damascus government has failed to protect
people from the attacks on Aleppo, Shahba region and Sheikh Maqsoud
neighborhood. The occupying Turkish state benefits from the attacks to
realize Misak-ı Milli (National Pact). The attacks on Aleppo, Shahba
region and Sheikh Maqsoud are the attacks against the gains of the
women's revolution."
Call on international community
The aim of the attacks is to divide and slaughter the Kurdish people,
Rojda Osman emphasized. "The attacks are a plan aiming to break the
resistance of the displaced people in Shahba. They aim to displace them
again. But the people of North and East Syria will always resist. The
Kurds will resist everywhere for their rights. I call on the
international community and organizations to raise their voices against
the attacks." >>

Yazidi women
Jinha - Womens News Agency - December 4, 2024 - by HEVIDAR ŞENGALI
<<Yazidi women collect signatures for recognition of Yazidi genocide
Members of the TAJE collect signatures for the petition calling on the
Iraqi government and all countries to recognize the crimes committed
against the Yazidi community by ISIS as a genocide.
Shengal (Sinjar)- The Shengal Autonomous Administration launched a
petition on the 9th anniversary of the genocide committed against the
Yazidi community by ISIS, demanding the Iraqi government and all
countries recognize the crimes committed against the Yazidi community by
ISIS as a genocide. As part of the petition, signatures will be
collected until Çarşema Sere Nisane, also known as the Yazidi New Year
celebrated on Wednesday at the beginning of April. 14 countries have
already recognized that the crimes committed by ISIS against the Yazidis
in 2014 constitute genocide. However, the Iraqi government has not
recognize the crimes as a genocide yet, even though the genocide took
place in Iraq. The Shengal Autonomous Administration works coordinately
with institutions and organizations to give information to people about
the petition, calling on all Yazidis to support the petition. NuJINHA
spoke to Yazidi women, who call on all Yazidis living abroad and IDPs
camps to support the petition and demand the Iraqi government for
officially recognition of the Yazidi genocide.
'We must rebuild Shengal'
Zozan Simo, member of the Yazidi Free Women's Movement (Kurdish: Tevgera
Azadiya Jinen Ezidi-TAJE), drew attention to the important role of women
in collecting signatures for the recognition of the Yazidi genocide.
"For 10 years, many Yazidis have lived abroad or IDPs camps," she said.
"As the Yazidi community, we have power to do everything if we unite.
Many Yazidis currently live away from their homeland and the Iraqi
government wants to close down all IDPs camps. As Yazidis, we must
rebuild Shengal."
'Yazidis must rebuild their homeland together'
Indicating that people should be informed about the petition so that
they support the petition, Zozan Simo said, "If all the Yazidis in
Sinjar and all over the world do nothing for themselves today, the Iraqi
government will not do anything for us. The Iraqi government has already
rebuilt many cities looted and destroyed by ISIS. The displaced people
of these cities have already returned to their homeland; however, no
step has been taken for the rebuilding of Shengal yet. Therefore,
Yazidis must rebuild their homeland together. I call on all Yazidis to
support the petition started for the recognition of the Yazidi
genocide."
'We will never surrender to the enemy'
The petition aims to put pressure on the Iraqi government to officially
recognize the crimes committed against the Yazidi community by ISIS in
2014 as a genocide. "Unfortunately, the Iraqi government does not want
to recognize the crimes against the Yazidi community as a genocide,"
Zozan Simo said. "But we will never surrender to the enemy and we will
fight until the genocide is officially recognized all around the world."
'I call on everyone to unite against the genocide'
"We visit home by home to give information about the petition and
collect signatures," said Seve Xelef, another member of the TAJE. All
states, especially Iraq, must recognize the crimes against the Yazidi
community in 2014 as a genocide. All Yazidis must unite for the
recognition of the genocide. I call on everyone to unite against the
genocide." >>

Turkish police crackdown on anti-war demo
Medyanews - December 3, 2024
<<Turkish police crackdown on anti-war demo in wake of proxy attacks in
Syria, 50+ arrests
Turkish police violently suppressed a DEM Party protest in İstanbul
against Turkish-backed jihadist attacks in northwest Syria, detaining
over 50 demonstrators. The party condemned the crackdown as a violation
of democratic freedoms and criticised the government's support for
militias accused of atrocities and displacement in Kurdish-majority
regions. A demonstration organised by the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality
and Democracy (DEM) Party in Istanbul to protest Turkish-backed jihadist
proxies' attacks on northwest Syria was violently suppressed by police.
The protest highlighted the ongoing assaults on Kurdish-majority cities
in the region, which have led to widespread displacement and reports of
atrocities.
According to the DEM Party, over 50 demonstrators, including activists
and party members, were detained during the protest. Eyewitness accounts
and videos shared online showed police officers using excessive force to
disperse the crowd, raising serious concerns about the violation of the
right to peaceful assembly. The DEM Party spokesperson strongly
condemned the police crackdown, accusing the government of trampling on
democratic freedoms and suppressing dissent. "The Turkish state not only
supports the atrocities committed by its jihadist proxies in Syria but
also silences those who dare to protest these inhumane acts," the
spokesperson said during a statement following the arrests. Criticising
the government's foreign policy, the spokesperson labelled the support
for jihadist proxies as a "shameful and destabilising strategy" that
perpetuates violence in the region. "This government has chosen to side
with war criminals instead of peace and justice," they added. The
demonstration came in response to recent offensives by Turkish-backed
groups in northwest Syria, which have targeted Kurdish-majority cities
such as Shahba (Şehba) and Tel Rifaat (Til Rifat). Activists allege that
these jihadist groups, including Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the
rebel Syrian National Army (SNA), have committed serious human rights
violations, including the abduction of women and the forced displacement
of thousands. The protest in Istanbul was part of a broader effort to
raise awareness of the situation and call for an end to Turkey's
military involvement in Syria. The DEM Party has demanded the immediate
release of all detained protesters and called on international
organisations to address Turkey's suppression of democratic freedoms.
"Silencing voices of peace and justice will not absolve the state of its
complicity in crimes against humanity," the party declared.>>

Tulay Hatimogulları
Medyanews - December 3, 2024
<<Tulay Hatimogulları urges dialogue, slams threats over DEM Party and
Imralı
Turkey's pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party
Co-Chair Tulay Hatimogulları rebuked the far-right ruling partner
Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli's threats during
her party's Tuesday group meeting, urging dialogue and calling for
reopening Imralı for discussions with the jailed Kurdistan Workers'
Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Ocalan to address Turkey's Kurdish question.
Turkey's pro-Kurdish Peoples' Equality and Democracy (DEM) Party
Co-Chair Tulay Hatimogulları, speaking at her party's weekly
parliamentary group meeting on Tuesday, condemned the far-right ruling
partner Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli's
confrontational rhetoric and urged the government to open İmralı Prison
for discussions with Abdullah Ocalan, the jailed Kurdistan Workers'
Party (PKK) leader. Tulay Hatimogulları's remarks addressed escalating
tensions surrounding Turkey's Kurdish question and criticised Ankara's
regional policies as unsustainable. Responding to Bahçeli's recent
criticism of the DEM Party, Tulay Hatimogulları said, "Threats cannot
build dialogue. We call on the authorities: abandon this language of
intimidation and demonstrate courage by reopening İmralı for
constructive talks." She highlighted that resolving the Kurdish question
requires authentic dialogue and courage rather than posturing. Tulay
Hatimogulları revealed that last week, she and her co-chair, Tuncer
Bakırhan, formally requested permission to visit Ocalan on Imralı
Island, but the government has yet to respond. "We will continue to
monitor this process," she said, adding, "President [Recep Tayyip]
Erdogan recently spoke of bold steps. We urge the government to turn
this rhetoric into action by facilitating dialogue." In a speech
attended by international observers who had applied to meet Ocalan,
Hatimogulları framed the DEM Party as a force for peace, rejecting
claims that it opposes solutions. "We stand for honourable peace. To
suggest otherwise is baseless slander," she stated. The DEM Party leader
also addressed broader regional dynamics, describing a growing crisis in
the Middle East marked by proxy wars, displacement, and instability. She
warned that Turkey's involvement in Syria and support for factions such
as the Syrian National Army (SNA) could backfire. "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham
(HTS), SNA, and their allies are wreaking havoc in Aleppo, Tel Rifaat,
and beyond. These groups, supported by Turkey, act as proxies in a
devastating power game," she said. "But this strategy will harm Turkey
itself. The same factions have turned against Ankara before, as seen in
the 2013 Reyhanlı incident."
Hatimogulları pointed to recent escalations in Gaza and Syria, arguing
that Turkey must prioritise regional peace over "neo-Ottoman fantasies".
She called for a shift from aggressive foreign policies to a regional
framework grounded in coexistence. "This chaos in the Middle East
threatens us all. Turkey must learn from its mistakes in Syria and stop
chasing reckless ambitions," she emphasised. Drawing attention to
Turkey's domestic and international challenges, Hatimogulları argued
that peace, not militarisation, offers the most secure path forward.
"Peace is more effective than weapons, tanks, or missiles in ensuring
safety," she declared. Concluding her remarks, Hatimogulları reaffirmed
the DEM Party's commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Kurdish
question. "We will persist in our quest for peace, no matter how many
barriers are placed in our way," she said. "It takes courage to face the
truth, and we will continue flying towards the horizon of peace." >>

<<How Western media shapes the narrative on Syria
Western media coverage of the recent Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)
offensive in Syria reveals inconsistencies in framing militant groups
and their connections. The portrayal ranges from insurgents to jihadists,
raising questions on terminology, narratives, and geopolitical
influences. The recent offensive by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and
allied factions in Aleppo (Haleb) has reignited debates over how Western
media portrays armed groups in Syria. Outlets such as the BBC, CNN, and
the New York Times framed HTS as "rebels" or "Islamist factions", while
others like The Guardian and Le Monde described them as "jihadists".
These differences reflect a larger challenge in balancing geopolitical
analysis with the complexities of Syria's conflict. HTS, a rebranded
offshoot of Al-Qaeda, has sought to distance itself from its extremist
origins, emphasising governance in Idlib, where it maintains de facto
control. While the BBC highlighted HTS recent efforts to reposition
itself, The Guardian pointed to ongoing accusations of human rights
violations under its rule, including arbitrary detentions and
suppression of dissent. Meanwhile, CNN underscored the tactical
sophistication of HTS, which has capitalised on weakened Assad-aligned
forces. The Syrian National Army (SNA), a Islamist rebel coalition
backed by Turkey, has been portrayed variably in Western media.
Mainstream outlets, including the New York Times, often refer to it as a
"moderate opposition", while independent platforms like Democracy Now
and Ronahi stress its role as a Turkish proxy accused of war crimes,
including the displacement of Kurdish populations. This divergence in
framing obscures the underlying dynamics, where Turkey leverages the SNA
for geopolitical gains, particularly to counter Kurdish autonomy.
Turkey's role in shaping these groups' actions remains a critical yet
underexplored dimension in much of the mainstream reporting. While Le
Monde noted Turkey's logistical and military support for both HTS and
the SNA, BBC stopped short of explicitly critiquing Ankara's broader
objectives. Analysts suggest that Turkey's alliances with these groups
serve both to expand its influence in northern Syria and to maintain
pressure on Kurdish self-administration. The reluctance of outlets like
CNN and the BBC to label the SNA as anything beyond a rebel coalition
contrasts starkly with accounts from human rights organisations, which
document abuses such as forced displacements, looting, and violence
against minority groups. Guardian recently reported on these allegations
but framed them as secondary to broader geopolitical manoeuvring. This
hesitancy raises concerns about how narratives are shaped by Turkey's
position within NATO and its strategic importance to the West.
Mischaracterising armed groups risks downplaying the human cost of
Syria's conflict, particularly for marginalised communities like the
Kurds. As Ronahi has reported, the Kurdish population in Afrin (Efrin)
has been severely impacted by SNA-led operations, with allegations of
systematic displacement and exploitation. Such realities are often
sidelined in mainstream narratives, leaving critical questions on
accountability unanswered. The timing of the HTS offensive, with Assad's
key allies such as Russia and Iran distracted by conflicts elsewhere,
has also drawn scrutiny. The New York Times observed that HTS's capture
of Aleppo marks a pivotal moment in the Syrian civil war, while
Democracy Now linked the offensive to broader regional instability,
including strained Turkish-Syrian relations. As HTS consolidates
control, the challenge of governing a diverse and ideologically varied
population may test its capacity for pragmatic adaptation. As the
conflict evolves, the role of media in shaping international perceptions
is critical. Consistent and accurate reporting is essential not only for
understanding Syrias war but also for holding powerful actors
accountable. By failing to critically examine Turkey's influence and the
broader implications of supporting groups like HTS and SNA, Western
outlets risk perpetuating narratives that obscure the lived realities of
those most affected by the conflict.>>

RiseUp4Rojava
Medyanews - December 3, 2024
<<Turkey's proxy war in Syria aims to dismantle Rojava: RiseUp4Rojava
The Turkish-backed offensive in Northern Syria escalates, displacing
thousands and threatening Rojavas egalitarian values. Jihadist
militias, supported by Turkey, capture key territories, raising Turkish
flags and invoking Ottoman ambitions. The Kurdish-led Autonomous
Administration declares a general mobilisation, while the Syrian
Democratic Forces leads the resistance with growing local and
international support. RiseUp4Rojava calls for global solidarity to
counter Turkish aggression and protect Rojava's democratic vision.
RiseUp4Rojava has called for global solidarity to counter Turkish
aggression and protect the democratic vision of Kurdish-led North and
East Syria, known as Rojava, after a major offensive launched by
jihadist militias, including the rebel Syrian National Army (SNA) and
Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a rebranded offshoot of Al-Qaeda, resulted
in an escalation of conflict in northern Syria. Backed by Turkish
support, the militant groups have captured significant territory west of
the Euphrates River and advanced towards Aleppo (Haleb), Syria's
second-largest city. The attacks have isolated the Autonomous
Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) while displacing
thousands of refugees who are now seeking shelter in emergency camps
near the Tabqa Dam. The Turkish-backed operation aims establish
territorial borders outlined in Turkey's 1920 *Misak-ı Milli Pact, with
emblematic nationalist tactics including raising Turkish flags and
playing Ottoman anthems. Resistance efforts led by the Kurdish-led
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have managed to slow the advance
temporarily, with local communities rallying in defence. Meanwhile, the
AANES declared a state of emergency on 1 December, calling for mass
mobilisation to defend Rojava. RiseUp4Rojava, a global activism network,
condemned the military operation as 'the largest Turkish offensive
against Rojava and northern Syria since 2019', urging global solidarity
to counter Turkish fascism and protect the egalitarian principles of the
Rojava Revolution, a social movement birthed in 2012 with the onset of
the Syrian civil war. The network denounces Turkey's "Neo-Ottoman"
ambitions and accuses it of seeking to dismantle the Rojava Revolution
and further destabilise Syria by empowering jihadist militias.
International protests have amplified calls to halt the violence and
support the defence of Rojava.
Escalating Conflict and Humanitarian Crisis
According to the statement, Turkish-backed groups, including Hay'at
Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Syrian National Army (SNA), launched
coordinated attacks on Kurdish-majority regions including Shahba (Şehba),
Tel Rifaat (Til Rifat), and Kurdish neighbourhoods in Aleppo. HTS
reportedly took control of Aleppo with little resistance from the Syrian
regime. The SNA, accused of widespread war crimes, is allegedly
conducting assaults with Turkish artillery and airstrike support.
Reports of women being abducted in newly seized areas have begun
circulating on social media. The affected regions face an escalating
humanitarian crisis, with thousands of displaced individuals from Afrin,
as well as Christian and other minority communities, under siege. Forced
evacuations are underway in Shehba and Tel Rifat to prevent massacres.
Meanwhile, the Kurdish population in Sheikh Maqsoud has vowed to resist
despite encirclement, and Rojava remains on high alert.
Regional and global implications
RiseUp4Rojava's statement also highlights the complicity of
international powers-Turkey, the US, and Russia-in perpetuating
instability in the region. It accuses these nations of prioritising
their geopolitical interests at the expense of local populations,
drawing parallels to past genocidal events such as the 2014 Shengal
massacre. The Rojava Revolution, with its foundation in grassroots
democracy, womens liberation, and equality, has persisted as a symbol
of resistance and hope for over a decade. The AANES has mobilised to
counter the current aggression and protect the region's hard-won
freedoms.
Global call to action
The RiseUp4Rojava network calls on democratic and revolutionary
movements worldwide to stand in solidarity with Rojava. Their actions
include protesting Turkish state institutions and their international
supporters, organising rallies to raise awareness about ongoing attacks,
and amplifying updates and mobilisation calls through social media. The
network's statement ends with a powerful affirmation: "Together, we can
amplify the resistance and defend the revolution that, with its slogan
"Women, Life, Freedom," continues to give hope to millions." As the
attacks on Rojava escalate, Kurdish communities worldwide are rallying.
RiseUp4Rojava emphasises that global solidarity is essential to
counteract these aggressions and protect the region's vision of a just,
democratic society. *The Turkish Misak-ı Milli or National Pact was
drawn up by the Ottoman parliament in 1920, and aimed at preserving as
far as possible the territorial control the Ottomans held at the time.>>
