<<Women of Aleppo caught in cycle of displacement
We have been caught in an endless cycle of displacement due to the
ongoing clashes in Aleppo, Qamar Abdel Ghafour said, "My only weapon is
patience".
Aleppo- "Women living in rural areas of Aleppo are caught in an endless
cycle of displacement due to the ongoing Syrian civil war. The women of
Aleppo struggle with the difficult living conditions between fear of the
unknown and efforts to protect their families. All they want is to have
a free life so they are still optimistic about the future. In 2012, our
life changed forever," said Qamar Abdel Ghafour, a displaced woman from
a rural area of Aleppo. "We had to leave our house and became the
victims of the conflict. We even had to leave our memories behind. That
year was the beginning of a journey of displacement for us. I did not
know whether I would survive. I still search for a place that will make
me feel safe, even if only temporarily.'
Temporary shelters
Qamar Abdel Ghafour has been displaced multiple times since 2012, when
the Syrian civil war started. "Every time I am displaced, I feel like I
start from scratch," she told NuJINHA. "This journey is a hope to find a
safe place where I am able to breathe again. Although we sleep
peacefully in the safe villages, we always feel anxious. Each village
becomes a safe and temporary shelter for us. But we have to continue our
journey of displacement due to the ongoing bombardments. Being displaced
multiple times makes you feel trapped. You feel like you live in a big
prison."
She feels helpless
As the conflict continues in Syria, the displaced people face
difficulties in going elsewhere. "Our living spaces have become much
smaller than before and we have no opportunity to go anywhere else. We
have no choice but to live in small rural areas. The bombardments and
clashes continue and leave us no safe spaces. Due to the displacement,
my children are deprived of education. I cannot provide a safe future
and stable educational conditions to them. Whenever we are displaced to
other places, I do my best to find a school for them; however, there is
no room for them at schools. Our financial situation does not allow us
to send our children to private schools. All these make me feel
helpless."
'My only weapon is patience'
Qamar Abdel Ghafour is not only displaced women of Aleppo, who face such
challenges. "I always try to be strong. Whenever my children begin to
complain about the difficult living conditions, I smile and tell them
that everything will be okay. My only weapon is patience. I always tell
my children that even though we are in the dark, we will overcome the
darkness." >>

<<Key points on the rebel gains that reignited Syria's civil war
Syrian rebels' capture of Aleppo from President Bashar al-Assad has
brought the Syrian civil war back into focus, jolting frontlines that
had been dormant for years with implications for the region and beyond.
What is going on?
The rebels launched their surprise offensive on Nov. 26, attacking from
areas to the north and northwest of Aleppo. They swept into the city on
Nov. 29-30, forcing out government forces. It is the first time control
of the city has shifted since 2016, when government forces, backed by
Russia and Iran, defeated rebels who had controlled Aleppo's eastern
districts. The rebels have pressed their advance in areas to the south
and southwest of Aleppo, capturing territory in Hama province. The
government has vowed to fight back. Russia, which deployed its air force
to Syria in 2015 to help Assad, is conducting airstrikes in support of
the army. It marks the most serious escalation of the conflict in years,
adding to a toll which stands at hundreds of thousands dead since 2011,
when the war mushroomed out of an Arab Spring uprising against Assad's
rule. Since then, more than half the pre-war population of 23 million
have been forced from their homes, with millions fleeing abroad as
refugees.
Who are the rebels?
The attack was initiated by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Formerly known as the
Nusra Front, it was al Qaeda's official wing in the Syrian war until
breaking ties in 2016. HTS, led by Abu Mohammed al-Golani, has long been
the dominant force in the Idlib region, part of an arc of the northwest
where rebels maintained a foothold despite Assad's gains elsewhere. The
United States and Russia, Turkey and other states designate it a
terrorist group.
Another rebel alliance has launched a separate offensive from areas
north of Aleppo. These rebels are backed by Turkey and organised under
the banner of the Syrian National Army.
Why has the conflict flared up now?
While peace has remained far off, the frontlines have not moved for
years, with Syria partitioned into zones where foreign powers have
troops on the ground. Russia and Iran have sway over government-held
areas, the single biggest chunk of Syria. The United States has forces
in the northeast and east, backing the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic
Forces. Turkey has troops on the ground in the rebel-held northwest. But
the regional power balance has been shaken by more than a year of
conflict pitting Israel against Iran and the militant groups it
supports. The Iran-backed Hezbollah, in particular, has suffered major
blows during more than two months of war with Israel in Lebanon.
Hezbollah, which ceased fire with Israel last week, helped Assad recover
Aleppo in 2016. U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, speaking
to CNN's "State of the Union", said it was no surprise that rebels would
try to take advantage of a new situation, with the Syrian government's
main backers - Iran, Russia and Hezbollah - distracted and weakened by
conflicts, referring to regional conflicts and the Ukraine war. A deal
between Russia and Turkey had broadly stabilised the situation in the
northwest since 2020. But Turkey has expressed growing frustration with
Assad's failure to reach a deal with the opposition to end the conflict.
Turkish security officials have said while Ankara was working to stop
rebel offensives, they were increasingly concerned about attacks by
Syrian government forces on the rebels. Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan
said Assad and the rebels needed to compromise. One of Turkey's main
concerns in Syria is the power held by the Kurdish-led groups which are
allied to Washington but deemed terrorists by Ankara. Turkey's
state-owned Anadolu news agency said the rebel Syrian National Army had
taken the town of Tel Rifaat from the Kurdish YPG militia. Both the
Kremlin and Tehran have reiterated their support for the Syrian
government.
Is there a peace plan?
The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution in 2015 aimed at ending
the conflict, calling for a new constitution, U.N.-supervised elections
and transparent and accountable governance. Implementation has gone
nowhere. U.N. Syria envoy Geir Pedersen said the escalation showed a
collective failure to bring about a political process and urged
substantive negotiations to find a way out of the conflict.

<<Kongra Star calls for unity against recent attacks on Aleppo
In a written statement, Kongra Star calls on our people and women of
North and East Syria "to unite and act according to the strategy of the
revolutionary peoples war" against the recent attacks on Aleppo.
News Center- Kongra Star issued a written statement on Monday regarding
the attacks by Turkish-backed factions on the Afrin/Shahba Canton of
North and East Syria. "The Middle East region is experiencing fierce
conflicts and wars, accompanied by crises and chaos, which are having a
brutal impact on the reality of societies and peoples, especially women
and children," the statement said. "The recent events and developments
in Aleppo and the collapse of the Syrian army bear witness to this, as
do the indiscriminate attacks on Shahba, which is mainly home to
refugees from Afrin."
Stressing that the attacks are "the result of the lack of consensual
Syrian solutions in Syria, the non-implementation of Resolution 2254 and
the failure of the Syrian regime to open the door to dialog and
negotiations to the initiative of the Autonomous Administration of North
and East Syria", Kongra Star said:
"This has led the armed groups of the Turkish occupation state to
confront the population with genocide and displacement once again, in
addition to their attacks on northern and eastern Syria. The Turkish
occupying state is trying to take advantage of the existing situation to
achieve its expansionist, demographic and colonial goals and expand its
influence to realize Misak-ı Millî (National Pact). It undermines the
democratic solution and the achievements of our people and the womens
revolution, which is the result of the struggle and resistance of the
Kurdish, Arab, Syriac, Assyrian, Armenian, Circassian and Turkmen
peoples of the region."
Call for unity
In the face of the chaotic and warlike conditions, "As the people of the
region and especially as women, we must organize and protect ourselves,"
Kongra Star added, calling on the peoples and women of the region to
"unite and act according to the strategy of the revolutionary peoples
war, to strengthen self-protection and defense of the national soil and
social values, and to increase the pace of struggle and resistance at
all levels in order to build a free and dignified life." >>

fight to liberate Afrin. In recent years, we have endured all the

<<Women of Dersim: The dismissal of the elected co-mayors is a genocide
"The dismissal of the elected co-mayors is a genocide," said women of
Dersim, stating that they would never recognize the decision of the
Turkish authorities to dismiss their elected co-mayors.
Dersim- On October 4, 2024, Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs
dismissed the elected co-mayors of Mardin, Elih (Batman) and Xelfeti (Halfeti),
three municipalities run by the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party
(DEM Party) and appointed trustees in their place. On November 22, 2024,
the Turkish ministry dismissed the elected co-mayors of Dersim and
Ovacık and appointed trustees in their place. On November 30, dismissed
Dersim Co-mayor Birsen Orhan was arrested and transferred to prison.
"Dismissal of our co-mayors is the usurpation of our will," said women
of Dersim.
'We do not recognize this unlawful decision'
"As a citizen, I casted my vote and elected co-mayors," said Nazlı Çelik
Oz, a resident of Dersim. "As a resident of Dersim, I do not recognize
this unlawful decision. We stand by our co-mayors, representing the will
of the people of Dersim. The people of Dersim elected them as Co-mayors
of Dersim." Nazlı Çelik Oz called on the people of Dersim to defend
their will. "Dersim is a place where a genocide and the resistance of
Seyit Rıza took place in the 38th. We do not recognize the appointment
of a trustee to our municipality because Dersim belongs to us and it
will belong to us. We will keep resisting this unlawful decision."
'The people took their municipality back despite oppression'
In 2016, the Turkish Ministry of Internal Affairs dismissed the elected
co-mayors of Dersim. "The co-mayors served the people of Dersim despite
the impossibilities. Unfortunately, we face the same mindset," said
Nurşak Yeşil. "As the people of Dersim, we do not recognize this
decision and the usurpation of our will. The people of Dersim are no
longer afraid of such policies. They took their municipality back
despite oppression and they will keep defending their will. The people
of Dersim must resist. If we do not resist, we will face such policies
again."
'The dismissal of the elected co-mayors is a genocide'
"They (Turkish authorities) usurped our will and stole our
municipality," said Şenay Kulbak. "We elected our co-mayors but they
dismissed our elected co-mayors. We will, of course, stand against this
decision. We will resist until we take back our municipality. We will
not allow the appointed trustees to destroy our nature. Since they will
have authority to sign, nowhere will be safe for us anymore. The
dismissal of the elected co-mayors is a genocide. They want to
intimidate us by dismissing our co-mayors. But such policies cannot
intimidate us. We will resist at all costs."
'People must resist'
Gulseren Guler also described the dismissal of co-mayors as an
"unlawful" decision. "The people of Dersim must resist and defend their
will. We demand our right to elect and be elected. As a citizen, I am
not allowed to enter the municipality because our rights have been taken
away."
'We do not want an appointed trustee'
"As the people of Dersim, we will resist and send the appointed trustee
back," said Leyla Coşkun. "Dersim belongs to us and we do not recognize
the appointed trustee. The people of Dersim elected their co-mayors. The
people of Dersim are strong and resist. We must keep resisting." >>

<<AANES declares mobilization against attacks on northeastern Syria
The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has
declared mobilization against the attacks of paramilitary factions in
northwestern Syria.
News Center- The Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES)
issued a press statement at its headquarters in Raqqa on Sunday,
declaring mobilization against the attacks of paramilitary factions
supported by the Turkish state in Afrin, Shahba, Aleppo and the
surrounding areas.
"First of all, we strongly condemn the attacks on Syrian territories by
the Turkish state and paramilitary factions supported by the Turkish
state, and we salute the historic resistance of our people in Aleppo and
Shahba," the statement said, describing the attacks as a continuation of
the plan that ISIS failed to achieve. The aim of the attacks is to
"occupy Syria and realize the borders of the 'Misak-ı Milli (National
Pact)'. This aggression aims to occupy and divide Syria and turn it into
a center of international terrorism.
'We call on young people to stand with the Syrian Democratic Forces'
"The attacks that started in Aleppo and Hama threaten not only a certain
region but the whole of Syria. Therefore, we call on all people in
northeastern Syria to understand that the aim of this aggression is to
destroy the hopes of the Syrian people to live in freedom and dignity,
to target the Democratic Autonomous Administration project and to add
new regions to Turkiye's territory. As Arab, Kurdish, Syriac-Assyrian
and Turkmen people, we must stand against this aggression by uniting. We
call on young people and young women of North and East Syria to stand
with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)." >>

Call for self-defence and solidarity
Medyanews - December 1, 2024
<<Turkey's ambitions in Syria spark call for self-defence and solidarity
The KCK calls for urgent mobilisation of the people as Turkish-backed
forces escalate attacks in North & East Syria, endangering the region's
autonomous administration and its stability. The Kurdistan Communities
Union (KCK) Executive Council has issued a strong statement calling for
urgent self-defence and solidarity to counter escalating attacks across
North & East Syria. According to the statement, Turkish-backed factions,
including extremist groups, have launched offensives against Aleppo,
Shahba (Şehba), and other regions, intensifying the threat to Syria's
stability.
The KCK accuses Turkey of exploiting the ongoing geopolitical chaos in
the Middle East to advance expansionist, colonialist and anti-Kurdish
goals. "The Turkish state is pursuing genocidal and racist ambitions to
eliminate the Kurdish people and democratic governance in Syria," the
statement said. It also criticised the Syrian government for its failure
to defend territories and its people, leaving communities vulnerable to
massacres and displacements. The attacks on Shahba and other areas are
framed as part of a broader global plan to destabilise Syria and deepen
ethnic and sectarian divisions. "These offensives aim to pit peoples
against each other and prevent solutions to Syria's long-standing
issues," the KCK said. The group warned that Turkish interventions in
Syria and the Middle East will lead to dangerous consequences, not only
for the Kurds but for all communities in the region. The KCK stressed
its long-standing vision of a democratic and inclusive Syria where all
peoples coexist equally and freely. "A democratic Syria is the only path
to solving its internal problems and contributing to the broader
democratisation of the Middle East," it asserted. However, the Turkish
states "anti-Kurdish mentality" and efforts to dismantle the democratic
autonomous administration in North & East Syria are seen as deliberate
obstructions to these goals. The statement called for widespread
organisation and vigilance among the people, urging them to adopt a
strategy of Revolutionary People's War to counter occupation attempts.
"Our people must not rely on external help but must integrate with local
defence forces and act collectively," the KCK declared. It stressed the
importance of preparing for self-defence to protect lives, lands and the
gains achieved by the autonomous administration. They concluded with a
stark warning about the extraordinary challenges facing Rojava and
Syria. This is a critical moment in history. To prevent massacres and
occupation, our people must mobilise, organise and resist. Only through
revolutionary self-defence can these threats be countered," it said. The
statement highlights the urgent need for international awareness and
action to address the escalating violence and its dire implications for
Syria's future.>>

<<Imprisoned Kurdish writer launches hunger strike over London arrests
Imprisoned Kurdish writer Ali Poyraz goes on hunger strike to protest
against the police raid in London that led to the arrest of seven
Kurdish activists. Kurdish people and supporters will march on 1
December to condemn the criminalisation of the Kurdish community.
Imprisoned Kurdish writer Ali Poyraz has started a hunger strike in
London to protest against the police crackdown on Kurdish activists and
their families. He was arrested on 27 November along with six other
activists from the Kurdish Community Centre (KCC) in London. The
European Kurdish Democratic Societies Congress (KCDK-E) has called for a
peoples demonstration on 1 December in defence of the KCC. Jeremy
Corbyn, former Labour leader and Islington MP described the operation on
the KCC as an attack on democratic freedom. Poyraz spent more than 21
years in prison in Turkey and previously wrote about this experience in
a book. According to a report, he started a hunger strike to protest
against the operation as soon as he was taken from his house. There has
been no contact between him and his family, including phone calls, since
his arrest. His lawyers say that they will file a complaint against the
police officers if the conditions of his detention continue. The police
operation took place in the night between 2 and 3 a.m. Poyraz's son was
forced to the ground and handcuffed when the police raided their home.
The families of those arrested were prevented from returning to their
homes until the end of the three days of investigation. Poyraz's
daughter, Dijle Poyraz, described the police action as immoral. "When
they talk about terrorists, we think of ISIS," she said. London Kurds
begin hunger strike as more arrests made at Haringey Community Centre
In response, Kurdish people started a vigil in front of the KCC, which
is still sealed by the police. Kurds and their supporters also called
for a demonstration on 1 December and the KCDK-E urged every Kurd in
England to participate to create unity against the criminalisation of
their community. Condemning the attack on the KCC, Corbyn said, Attacks
on one communitys institutions or democratic freedoms are an attack on
us all
[Kurdish people] have changed our part of London for the better
- and their resolve is an inspiration to millions of us seeking to build

<<Four killed in Aleppo, students evacuate university as HTS enters
Syrian city
As the Islamist group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) continues its
offensive in Syria, four civilians have been killed in Aleppo. Kurdish
groups have sounded the alarm that HTS, which is comprised of many
ex-ISIS fighters, will look to target the Kurdish community in northern
Syria. Four civilians, including two students, have been killed on
Friday 29 November in the Syrian city of Aleppo. The deaths were as a
result of shelling by Islamist group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS),
formerly known as the al-Nusra Front. The HTS militia began its attack
on Aleppo on Wednesday 27 November. The assault on the city is the
biggest since the ceasefire of 2020. This invasion marks the most
extensive operation by Islamist factions in Syria since the major
conflicts of 2016. HTS is supported by the Turkey-backed Syrian National
Army (SNA). The shelling caused panic in the Furqan neighbourhood of
western Aleppo. Footage of the aftermath of the bombing was captured on
social media platform X by Kurdish journalist Jamal Balî:
Bali reported a "massive displacement" from Aleppo's western
neighbourhoods. Journalist Scharo Maroof has confirmed that HTS forces
have now entered Aleppo. One video shared by Maroof on X shows Syrian
regime soldiers fleeing the battlefield and rushing towards the city
centre.
HTS have reportedly used a suicide bomber to attack positions held by
regime forces. Their forces have been confirmed to have taken over Tal
Hadya, and are also claiming to be in control of Al-Eis. Kurdish
organisations are expressing increasing concerns that HTS, which
consists of many ex-ISIS fighters, is likely to attack Kurdish civilians
and Kurdish forces. The Kurdish neighbourhoods of Eşrefiye and
Shasmeqsûd in Aleppo are now very vulnerable. The Kurdistan National
Congress KNK gave a stark warning of the seriousness of the situation on

Hope Village
Medyanews - November 29, 2024
<<The ironically named 'Hope Village' is furthering the ethnic cleansing
of Afrin
Following the Turkish invasion of Afrin in 2018, the city has been
largely emptied of its predominantly Kurdish population. Policies aimed
at effecting permanent demographic changes have been implemented in the
region, supported by Turkey and charitable institutions based in both
Arab and Western countries. The city of Afrin in northeast Syria has
been occupied by Turkish affiliated forces since 2018. The Kurdish
residents of Afrin have been subject to colonisation ever since, a
policy which amounts to an ethnic cleansing of the city, aimed at
marginalising its Kurdish residents. At Turkey's behest,
Islamist-affiliated organisations, together with states and Islamic
charitable foundations are bolstering the soft power of Islamism in the
region. As part of this initiative, a Canada-based charity - Human
Concern International (HCI) - has helped to establish 'Hope Village'.
But, critics say that the village will house families connected to
Islamist groups and facilitate demographic engineering in the area. This
village will house 300 families-totalling 2,100 individuals. It includes
a clinic and a school with a capacity for 1,000 students. A group of
Kurdish campaigners from Canada made the following statement, critiquing
the project: "for Kurdish communities, this "dream" represents a
nightmare. Projects like the Village of Hope are not merely about
providing shelter-they are about erasing an entire culture. Activists
argue that these settlements are part of Turkeys calculated campaign to
permanently alter Afrin's ethnic and political landscape. By resettling
jihadist militants and their families, Turkey is building a buffer zone
of loyal, pro-Ankara communities in historically Kurdish territories."
The Hope Village is part of a broader project orchestrated by the
Turkish state in collaboration with Islamic charities, including those
based in Canada and other Western countries, aimed at facilitating
demographic changes in the northeast of Syria. Another example is the
Basma settlement, which was established in Afrin by the Living with
Dignity Association (Jamia'at al-Aish Bikarama) in the Yazidi community
of Shadere. A 2022 report by Afrinpost identified HCI as a key financial
sponsor of the project. Now, two years later, HCI has publicly
acknowledged its financial support for the settlement, which is
reportedly funded by donations from Iftikhar Ahmed Sheikh, the Global
Director of Programs at Human Concern International. Previously, the
charity had announced that the project aimed to house more than 3,500
individuals. In recent years, several Arab countries have provided
substantial support to jihadist and extremist groups in Syria, often
through covert channels and by utilising global financial networks. This
assistance, given in the context of the Turkish occupation of Afrin, has
resulted in the promotion of Turkification policies, the settlement of
Islamist groups in Kurdistan, and the destruction of the region's
historical and cultural heritage. The opening of Hope Village has
provoked widespread outrage among Kurds and human rights activists, who
condemn the ethnic cleansing policies promoted by the Turkish state.>>
