<<'Iran and Afghanistan will be cleared of misogynists'
"Iran and Afghanistan will be cleared of misogynists," Yalda Ahmad, an
Afghan psychologist, said, condemning the death sentences against labor
activist Sharifeh Mohammadi and journalist Pakhshan Azizi by the Iranian
regime.
Kabul- Iran continues to use the death penalty against opponents,
particularly Kurdish citizens in order to suppress the "Jin, Jiyan,
Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)" uprising. In July 2024, the Iranian regime
sentenced labor activist Sharifeh Mohammadi and Kurdish journalist
Pakhshan Azizi
Sharifeh Mohammadi and Kurdish journalist Pakhshan Azizi
to death. Afghanistan is one of the countries where women are deprived
of their rights. Despite everything, the women in both countries never
give up demanding freedom.
'Wherever there is oppression, there is resistance'
The death sentences against two women in Iran are also condemned in
Afghanistan. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is very afraid of opponents,
particularly women, and tries to silence the voices of opposition," said
Yalda Ahmad, an Afghan psychologist and women's rights activist. "But
wherever there is oppression, there is resistance."
'I am in solidarity with the women resisting in Iran'
Iranian people and women resist oppression, Yalda Ahmad said. "Although
the Islamic Republic of Iran kills and executes women, men and children,
the struggle and resistance against it will increase. As an Afghan
psychologist, I express that I am in solidarity with the women resisting
in Iran."
'The perpetrators will prosecuted by a tribunal established by people'
Yalda Ahmad concluded her speech, saying, "Like Iranian women, the women
of my country are tortured in the most heinous ways every day in the
prisons of the Taliban. But we all know that this bloodshed will not go
unpunished. One day, Iran and Afghanistan will be cleared of misogynists
and the perpetrators will be prosecuted by a tribunal established by
people. Long live the solidarity of women all over the world! Long live
the struggle for the rights of the Iranian people! No to executions! No
to the Islamic Republic of Iran!" >>

<<Women fighters: We will defend Manbij against Turkish attacks
"We will defend Manbij against all Turkish attacks," said women fighters
of the Manbij Military Council, who had achieved victory against ISIS.
Manbij- The Women's Defense Units (YPJ) played an important role in the
liberation of Manbij, a city in northeastern Syria, and lost many of its
fighters. Women of Manbij, who were impressed by the resistance of the
YPJ formed the Manbij Women's Military Council under the umbrella of the
Manbij Military Council and fought ISIS. "We have the power and will to
protect our city," they said, emphasizing that they fight with the "Jin,
Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)" philosophy of Kurdish leader
Abdullah Ocalan.
'Many women of Manbij were impressed by the courage of the YPJ fighters'
"ISIS controlled Manbij for about three years, committing crimes against
people, especially women. ISIS members used inhuman methods such as
torture, arbitrary arrest and stoning people to death," said Amara
İbrahim, a fighter of the Manbij Military Council (MMC). Amara Ibrahim
recalled that the offensive to liberate Manbij was launched on June 1,
2016 and said, "The Syrian Democratic Forces, the Manbij Military
Council and the Women's Defense Units launched an offensive to liberate
Manbij. The role of women fighters in the offensive was important. The
fighters of the YPJ played an important role in the offensive and
liberated Manbij from ISIS. Many women of Manbij were impressed by the
courage of the YPJ fighters and decided to join the MMC."
'We will keep resisting'
Then, women joining the MMC formed the Manbij Women's Military Council.
"Women were at the forefront of the resistance against ISIS, defending
and liberating their homeland. However, they are targeted by the Turkish
state. We vow to do our part despite all the attacks. We will keep
resisting until liberating all occupied areas."
'Our resistance will continue'
"There are women from different nationalities in Manbij such as Kurdish,
Arab and Turkmen women," said Zahra Ali, another fighter of the MMC. "We
made many sacrifices to liberate the city of Manbij from ISIS; many of
our comrades were killed while fighting ISIS. We will follow in the
footsteps of our women martyrs to protect our gains. Today marks the 8th
anniversary of the liberation of Manbij. However, the Turkish state
attempts to occupy our city. Our resistance against all kinds of attacks
on Manbij will continue."
'We maintain our fight with the philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi'
Sulafa Tammo
We are inspired by the "Jin, Jiyan, Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)"
philosophy of Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan, MMC fighter Sulafa Tammo
stressed, adding, "Our duty is to resist and defend our homeland. Women
fighters of the MMC are at the forefront of the resistance against all
kinds of the Turkish attacks on their own homeland. We maintain our
fight with the philosophy of Jin, Jiyan, Azadi." >>

<<Sudanese women struggle to survive
Sudanese women struggle to survive due to difficult living conditions
caused by the war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid
Support Forces (RSF).
Sudan - Due to violent clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces
(SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan on April
15, 2023, people suffer from displacement, unemployment, poverty,
violence, economic crisis and many other difficult living conditions.
Women and children are extremely vulnerable to this war in the country
No access to food and healthcare services
K.H. is a woman living in the East Nile locality of Khartoum, capital of
Sudan, with her two sons. "We suffer from the lack of essential services
such as medical, water and power services due to the ongoing clashes
between the Sudanese Army and the Rapid Support Forces," she told us,
noting that her sons and she depend on "Takarya", (soup kitchens). "Some
benevolent people provide food to us; however, it is insufficient.
Therefore, we have to go to the soup kitchens. My children often get
sick because they are malnourished. We have no access to food and
healthcare services." Due to the lack of resources and financial
support, all the kitchens in the region stopped providing meals to those
affected by the war, K.H. told us. "This situation will further increase
the suffering of thousands of Sudanese families in the region. Other
voluntary kitchens also announced that they would stop providing meals
due to the lack of resources and financial support."
'We hope that war will end and peace will prevail'
The city of Omdurman is one of the safe areas in Khartoum State, hosting
thousands of displaced people. Journalist Mai Ezz El-Din and her family
have not left their home in Omdurman since the beginning of the war
although a number of their relatives and neighbors were killed in
clashes. "We hope that the war will end and peace will prevail," she
said.
'Nowhere is safe'
"Nowhere is safe," said Amira Al-Nour Al-Amin, who lives in the Al-Manara
neighborhood of Omdurman. "Every day, we live in fear due to random
bombardments." Badriya Abdullah and her family have not left their home
in Omdurman since the beginning of the war. "The first days of the war
were difficult for us due to the heavy bombardments and clashes." >>

<<'Afghan women and girls are living their worst nightmares'
"Under the Taliban's abusive rule, Afghan women and girls are living
their worst nightmares," said Fereshta Abbasi, Afghanistan researcher at
Human Rights Watch.
News Center- The Taliban have created the world’s most serious women's
rights crisis since taking power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021,
Human Rights Watch said on Sunday. "Afghanistan is also experiencing one
of the world's worst humanitarian crises, with aid severely underfunded,
thousands of Afghans forced back into Afghanistan from Pakistan, and
thousands of others expecting to emigrate to Western countries still
waiting.
Under the Taliban, Afghanistan is the only country where girls are
banned from education beyond the sixth grade. The Taliban have also
violated women's right to freedom of movement, banned them from many
forms of employment, dismantled protections for women and girls
experiencing gender-based violence, created barriers to them accessing
health care, and barred them from playing sports and even visiting
parks." The United Nations special rapporteur on Afghanistan, Richard
Bennett, has described the situation in Afghanistan as "an
institutionalized system of discrimination, segregation, disrespect for
human dignity, and exclusion of women and girls."
'Afghan women and girls are living their worst nightmares'
"Under the Taliban’s abusive rule, Afghan women and girls are living
their worst nightmares," said Fereshta Abbasi, Afghanistan researcher at
Human Rights Watch. "All governments should support efforts to hold the
Taliban leadership and all those responsible for serious crimes in
Afghanistan to account." In addition to intensified restrictions on
women's and girls’ rights, the Taliban have severely curtailed freedom
of expression and the media and have detained and tortured protesters,
critics, and journalists. The cutoff in development assistance has
helped to create Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis. The UN Office for
the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has reported that more than
half of the population, 23 million people, face food insecurity. Women
and girls are among the most seriously affected. The loss of foreign
assistance has severely harmed Afghanistan's healthcare system and
exacerbated malnutrition and illnesses resulting from inadequate medical
care. Taliban restrictions on women and girls have impeded access to
health care, jeopardizing their right to health. The Taliban's education
bans guarantee future shortages of female health workers, Human Rights
Watch said.
'It should also be a call for action'
"The third anniversary of the Taliban's takeover is a grim reminder of
Afghanistan's human rights crisis, but it should also be a call for
action," Fereshta Abbasi said. "Governments engaging with the Taliban
should consistently remind them that their abuses against women and
girls and all Afghans violate Afghanistan's obligations under
international law. Donors should provide assistance aimed at reaching
those most in need and crafting durable solutions to Afghanistan's
humanitarian crisis." >>

<<'Free Afghan Women': Olympic refugee breakdancer disqualified for
slogan
Paris (AFP) - Olympic Refugee Team breakdancer Manizha Talash from
Afghanistan was disqualified from the breaking competition after she
wore a cape saying "Free Afghan Women", the World DanceSport Federation
told AFP on Saturday.
B-girl Talash, 21, unveiled the blue top with the slogan on Friday just
before the first duel of the whole competition, against India Sardjoe of
the Netherlands. <Refugee athlete B-girl Talash... was disqualified for
displaying a political slogan on her attire in violation of Rule 50 of
the Olympic Charter,> the association said in a statement to AFP. That
rule states that <no kind of demonstration or political, religious or
racial propaganda is permitted in any Olympic sites, venues or other
areas>.
Born in Kabul, under Taliban control since 2021, Talash fled the country
to live in Spain with her two brothers. Before arriving in Spain, she
spent a year in hiding in Pakistan because she did not have a passport.
"I didn't leave Afghanistan because I'm afraid of the Taliban or because
I can't live in Afghanistan," she said before the competition. "I left
because I want to do what I can for the girls in Afghanistan, for my
life, my future, for everyone." In Kabul, she discovered breaking online
and joined a local club, where she was the only girl. Despite the risks
-- the troupe was forced to switch practice venues after receiving death
threats -- she was determined to pursue her passion. "I took the risk of
becoming a target. I have fear in my heart but I won't give up," she
told AFP in 2021.
Six athletes represented Afghanistan -- including three women not
acknowledged by the Taliban government -- at the Paris Olympics in
cycling, athletics, swimming and judo.

<<Co-mayor of Piran: "We will solve problems together with women"
The municipality in Piran (Dicle) opened a Women's Life Center in line
with women’s demand to "solve problems together with women".
Amed (Diyarbakır)- The Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party)
won the municipality in Piran (Dicle) district of Amed in the local
elections held in Turkish and Kurdish cities on March 31, 2024. The
co-mayors of the municipality reopened the Women's Life Center, which
was closed down by the state-appointed mayor, after hearing the demands
and problems of the people.
NuJINHA spoke to Aysel Baran, Co-mayor of Piran, about their projects
and works.
"Four months have passed since the elections," Aysel Baran said. "After
winning the municipality, we saw that only men came to the municipality,
voicing their problems, expressing their opinions and suggestions. Since
women did not come to the municipality, we decided to visit them in
neighborhoods and villages. We held women’s gatherings, hearing their
demands. One of the women's demands was the reopening of the Women's
Life Center. The center is a space for women to come together and meet
their basic needs."
'We will hold workshops and gatherings'
Aysel Baran told us that they would hold workshops and gatherings for
women at the center. "After we reopened the center, we had positive
feedback from women. Now, women have a space. This center is a space to
solve the problems faced by women in the district. We continue to hear
the demands and problems of the women in the districts by organizing a
women's gathering once a week. We want to put many projects into
practice together with the women of the district. We will keep holding
workshops and gatherings for women at the center."
'We will increase women's participation in the labor force'
Many projects will be put into practice by the center. "When trustees
were appointed to the municipalities in 2016, they first targeted
women's organizations. For eight years, the women of the district
received no services from the municipality. The women of the district
want to participate in the labor force. They demanded us to create jobs
for them. The economic crisis affects women the most. We are planning to
open a women's market in the district to increase women's participation
in the labor force. Our biggest goal is to find solutions to the
problems faced by women by hearing the demands of women. In addition, we
will organize activities on art and culture and language. We are
planning to open language courses in Kurmanci and Kurmancki, two
dialects of Kurdish language." >>

<<Pakistani journalist in hiding after police raid his home over protest
reports
New York, August 7, 2024-Pakistani police have raided the home of
digital journalist Usman Khan three times, forcing him into hiding to
avoid detention for his coverage of protests over alleged human rights
abuses in southwestern Baluchistan province. "Pakistani police must
immediately cease their attempts to detain independent journalist Usman
Khan and allow the media to report on current affairs without fear of
intimidation or arrest," said Beh Lih Yi, CPJ Asia program coordinator.
"Pakistani authorities must do more to protect independent voices across
the country. We have seen an alarming uptick in attacks on the press in
Pakistan, with seven deaths so far this year." Khan told CPJ from an
undisclosed location that uniformed and plainclothes police officers
raided his home on July 31, August 2, and August 5, but he escaped. Khan
said he knew that authorities planned to arrest him over his coverage
because military officials questioned protesters about him and phoned
his father to summon Khan back to Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan.
Khan reports for and manages the Zaiwa News channel on YouTube and
Facebook, which covers current affairs in volatile Baluchistan where
insurgents have long demanded independence from the central government.
On his X account, Khan reported extensively on the army's crackdown on
demonstrators marching to the port city of Gwadar to attend a July 28
protest against enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings in
Baluchistan. Three people were killed in clashes with security forces.
CPJ's email requesting comment from Abdul Khaliq Sheikh, Inspector
General of Police in Quetta, did not receive a response.>>
