<<Turkey ranks 166th among 179 countries in Academic Freedom Index
News Center- The Academic Freedom Index (AFI) project is a collaborative
effort initially launched in 2019 between researchers at
Friedrich-Alexander-Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg (FAU), the V-Dem
Institute, the Scholars at Risk Network, and the Global Public Policy
Institute (GPPI). This year’s update of the AFI identified 22 countries
and territories, where universities and scholars enjoy significantly
less freedom today than 10 years ago. According to the AFI, Turkey is in
the bottom 10%, scoring 0.08 out of one, putting the country in 166th
place out of 179 countries as of December 2022. Turkey ranks behind
Tajikistan, Russia and Bangladesh, according to the AFI. According to
the latest index, Turkey reached a score of 0.43 in 2012, with the
quantified value of academic freedom falling more than 80 percent in 10
years. The countries that took the top 10 places in the AFI are: Czechia
(also known as the Czech Republic), Estonia, Belgium, Italy, Germany,
Honduras, Luxembourg, Latvia, Finland and Argentina.
The academic freedom index between 2016 and 2022 showed a very sharp
decline in the academic freedom index score of Turkey. The score of
Turkey was 0,55 in 2002 and 0,56 in 2004. In 2010, the score of the
country declined 0.47. Following the 2016 coup attempt, Turkey's
academic freedom score sharply dropped. In 2016, the Turkish government
carried out a sweeping crackdown on the academic sector, resulted in the
dismissal of over 30,000 teachers and 7,000 academics, including the
academics calling themselves Academics for Peace, who signed a petition
entitled <We will not be a party to this crime> calling for an end to
human rights violations resulting from the curfews declared by the State
in different cities of Southeastern Turkey in 2015. The Academic Freedom
Index (AFI) assesses de facto levels of academic freedom around the
world based on five indicators: freedom to research and teach; freedom
to research and teach; freedom of academic exchange and dissemination;
institutional autonomy; campus integrity; and freedom of academic and
cultural expression. It rests on assessments by 2,197 country experts
worldwide, standardized questionnaires, and a well-established
statistical model, implemented and adapted by the V-Dem project.>>

<<Lubna Ezz Eldin: Women should believe in themselves
Beirut- Lubna Ezz Eldin is a Lebanese woman, who achieves many successes
despite all the obstacles. Born in Deir Qanoun En Nahr, a town in the
Tyre area, south of Lebanon, she left her hometown after getting married
when she was 19. After living abroad for years, she returned to her
hometown. <My long career began in Ivory Coast when I ran for the
Lebanese community elections in 1984, when men only ran for elections. I
am the first woman running for the elections in my hometown. I ran for
the elections because I believed that I had the ability to offer a lot
for the Lebanese community,> said Lubna Ezz Eldin, who founded a
Lebanese-African school that brings together members of the Lebanese
community and African citizens in order to strengthen communication
between them. Despite her pregnancy, she continued her social activities
and studied at university to obtain a degree in interior engineering. <A
new municipality had been established in my town, so I took the
initiative to visit the municipality with many suggestions and ideas in
my pocket to improve the conditions of the town and beautify it.
However, the people of the town always asked me, 'Why do you go to the
municipality and what do you do there among the men?' but I did not care
what they told me.>
'We established a women's committee'
Lubna Ezz Eldin and several women established a women's committee in the
town in 2013 to enhance the role of women in society and promote women's
economic empowerment. <Cultural and social activities held by the
committee attracted the attention of women. The women of the neighboring
towns who came to our town to participate in our activities.> Lubna Ezz
Eldin also talked about the activities of the committee in the town. <We
have held exhibitions for women to display their hand-made products. We
also hold training courses for women to promote women's economic
empowerment. We have developed many projects for women according to
their needs. Most of the women in the town have already started their
own business. Now, they participate in exhibitions across Lebanon to
market their products.>
She founded an environmental association
Lubna Ezz Eldin wanted to improve herself to serve her community. <I
attended training courses to lead my community. Now, I write articles
about women for the municipality magazine.> Lubnan Ezz Eldin then
founded the <Univers> Environmental Association in partnership with
agricultural and environmental engineers from her town. <The aim of the
association is to raise environmental awareness in our town. One of the
projects of the association aims to shed light on how to use alternative
energy and alternative crops. The association provides courses on
organic agriculture without using chemical fertilizers.>
Project for women
The women's committee in the town also launched a <skills development>
project to teach women how to make handicrafts and sew. <The project was
developed for women from all ages. The women's committee has turned into
a meeting place and a space for women to talk about their fears and
concerns and spend their free time. The committee also aims to promote
women's political participation. I call on all women to believe in
themselves, not surrender to anyone because they have the capacity to
change their society despite all the obstacles.> >>

Women of Rojava

<<Officer of Mala Jin: Together we can defeat the occupation
Hasakah- Although the Turkish state keeps targeting the gains of the
revolution in Rojava, women are determined to protect their gains and
revolution under all circumstances. Mala Jin (Women's House, a kind of
women's shelter) office in the town of Zirgan, Hasakah Canton, provides
support to women and children and aims to eliminate all forms of
violence against women. In 2023, the center received 19 applications
from women about their problems. The center has resolved seven of these
problems and made efforts to resolve the other problems.
'Women and children are affected more by the attacks'
NuJINHA spoke to Sediya Eydo, officer of Mala Jin center in Zirgan,
about their activities. <For a year, we have made great efforts to end
polygamy, child marriage, forced marriage and violence against women.
Women and children are affected more by the ongoing Turkish attacks. In
2023, we have carried out many activities to support women and children
affected by the attacks.
'We become stronger when we solve the problems faced by women'
Emphasizing that Mala Jin is a space for women, Sediya Eydo said:
<We will not leave women alone against invaders and the patriarchal
mindset. We always stand with women. We hold seminars and training
programs for women. If we do not defend our land or leave it, we will
give up all our rights. The more we defend our land, the more we will
defend our rights. We become stronger when we solve the problems faced
by women.>
'We faced obstacles'
The members of Mala Jin visit homes to listen to women without expecting
women to come to the center. <The town of Zirgan is often targeted by
the Turkish forces. We work as a team to solve the problems faced by
women in Zirgan and its rural areas.> The members of Mala Jin faced
obstacles while providing support to women. <Men tried to violate
women's rights as if no revolution was started here. They wanted to
impose their authority on women by saying 'women are women, men are
men',> Sediya Eydo said.
'We try to tell society that women have rights'
Pointing out that the burdens on women have become even heavier due to
the ongoing Turkish attacks on the town, Sediya Eydo said:
<We carry out awareness-raising activities against all forms of
violence. The women's cause is also an important cause in the world; we
try to tell society that women have rights. Women undertake many tasks
in all facets of life, including in the military. We call on all women
to unite because together we can defeat the occupation, defend our
cities and liberate ourselves.> >>

women fighting the patriarchal mindset. Living in the city of Mallawi,
located in Egypt's Minya governorate, Martina Hamed has been making
efforts to change the reality of women in Upper Egypt for 15 years
because <Women are oppressed due to customs and traditions.>
'The presence of women in private and public spaces is accepted'
Indicating that the reality of women in Upper Egypt is a complex issue,
she said, <Before women were not allowed to go to cafés because men went
to cafes. Women were not allowed to interact with men. We can say that
this situation has changed. The presence of women in private and public
spaces is accepted more compared to previous years.>
'Women play an important role in social change'
Martina Hamed thinks that women participate in social life more thanks
to the great efforts and activities of feminist organizations and
initiatives. <Women's organizations have launched awareness-raising
campaigns against the female genital mutilation, child marriage and
violence against women. I can say that women play an important role in
social change in Upper Egypt.>

Since her childhood, Martina Hamed has been working to change the
reality of women in Upper Egypt. <Women were deprived of their rights.
They were not allowed to be engaged in cultural and educational
activities. I faced many obstacles because I wanted to change this
reality. I was a strong and excited girl wanting to change this reality.
I first began to change my reality and I have become an independent
woman, who can work, travel and make decisions about her life. Now, I
work so that women can have a free life.>
'Women voice their demands now'
According to Martina Hamed, many things have changed for women and girls
in Upper Egypt, <However, we still have a long way to go. Women need
more innovative and effective tools to fight the patriarchal mindset.
Now, women are more aware of their rights. They voice their demands
more.>
