Stop Turkish attacks
Jinha - 29 Dec 2023 - BERÇEM CUDI
<<Call on international human rights organizations to <stop Turkish
attacks>
Kobane - Eight civilians have been killed in the Turkish bombardments on
the Cizîr and Euphrates cantons of North and East Syria. On December 25,
the Turkish warplanes targeted the repair shop of the Kobane
Municipality, the Kobanê cemetery, a poultry farm and the Mashta Nour
hospital. The Mashta Nour Hospital was opened in the city in 2005.
Having 59 employees, the hospital served about 500 people every day.
However, the hospital was completely destroyed in the Turkish
bombardment. The Turkish state has dropped bombs on villages, towns and
cities near the border for two days, said Zozan Bekir, Spokesperson of
the Kongra Star in Euphrates Canton. <The Turkish state has particularly
targeted critical civilian infrastructure, including health centers,
power and water stations. Dozens of facilities have been destroyed in
the Turkish bombardments. The Turkish state carries out attacks on our
region to hide its bankruptcy. In addition, Erdogan wants to take
revenge for their defeat in Southern Kurdistan. Our people are
determined to resist and have already taken up their position against
the Turkish attacks. Despite the intense bombardment, our people have
taken to the streets to protest the Turkish attacks.>
'We will keep protecting our gains'
Pointing to the silence of the international community and the guarantor
states against the Turkish attacks, Zozan Bekir said, <The current
silence shows that there is a deal between the Turkish state and the
guarantor states. In the last two years, many civilians were killed in
the Turkish bombardment targeting critical civilian infrastructure. We
paid a high price to achieve gains in North and East Syria. We will keep
protesting our gains. The Turkish state will never break our will by
using cowardly methods. We are getting stronger every day.>
'Targeting civilian infrastructure is a war crime'
Mizgin Xelil
Mizgin Xelil, member of the Euphrates Canton Executive Council, pointed
to the ongoing Turkish state targeting critical civilian infrastructure.
<We strongly condemn the Turkish attacks on North and East Syria.
Targeting civilian infrastructure in North and East Syria is a war
crime. The Turkish attacks have targeted factories, gas stations,
repair-shops and printing houses. The Turkish state has intensified its
attacks on North and East Syria especially for three years. The aim of
Erdoğan is to destroy the gains of the revolution in Rojava.>
'The Turkish attacks should be immediately prevented'
Mizgin Xelil called on all human rights organizations and women's
organizations to immediately prevent the Turkish attacks to protect
civilians. <It is time for Erdoğan to stand trial for killing women,
children and citizens of North and East Syria. Dozens of incidents
showing the brutality and terror of the Turkish state have been
documented. Unfortunately, the international community remains silent
against the crimes committed by the Turkish state. Despite conventions
against war crimes and human rights violations, the international
community remains silent and this silence shows that there is a deal
with the Turkish state.> >>

Ocalan
Jinha - 29 Dec 2023
<<Prisoners on hunger strike subjected to psychological violence
News Center- On November 27, 2023, political prisoners in 104 prisons
across Turkey started a rotational hunger strike, demanding <freedom for
Abdullah Ocalan and a resolution to the Kurdish question>. According to
the Çukurova Association for Solidarity with Families of Prisoners and
Convicts (Çukurova TUAY-DER), the hunger strikers in the Antalya
Manavgat High Security Prison have been subjected to many right
violations and psychological violence. When hunger strikers go out their
wards, they are insulted in the corridor by the wardens saying, <You are
terrorists, do not leave your wards>, the Çukurova TUAY-DER said. The
Çukurova TUAY-DER also reported that the wardens left trash in wards of
hunger strikers. When hunger strikers complain about this practice, they
are told, <Don't speak, you do not have the right to speak>. According
to the Çukurova TUAY-DER, the hunger strikers are held in solitary
confinement and subjected to psychological violence to end their hunger
strike.>>

Rima Mehmud
Jinha - 29 Dec 2023 - by DELAL REMEZAN
<<Rîma Mehmud of Kongra Star: We will strengthen our struggle in 2024
Hasakah- Kongra Star has carried out many activities, projects for women
since 2004, aiming to smash patriarchal capitalism that fuels
inequality, gender-based violence and femicide. The Kongra Star holds a
congress every two year to determine a roadmap. Rima Mehmud,
coordinating member of Kongra Star in the Hasakah Canton, told NuJINHA
that the Kongra Star carried out many activities and projects for women
in 2023. <We have provided education programs in cities, towns and
villages. We have carried out awareness-raising activities on March 8,
the International Women's Day, and on November 25, International Day for
the Elimination of Violence against Women. As Kongra Star, we have held
33 workshops for men to raise awareness about violence against women and
femicide. In 2023, we held our 9th congress and determined a roadmap for
the next two years,> said Rima Mehmud.
'Women were targeted'
Pointing to the ongoing Turkish attacks on North and East Syria, she
said, <Throughout 2023, the Turkish state carried out many attacks on
North and East Syria. Many pioneering women were targeted in the
attacks. The Turkish state aims to destroy the gains of the women's
revolution and break the will of women. Despite all the attacks, we do
not give up on realizing our dream of freedom. We have also supported
the international campaign launched to demand the physical freedom of
Kurdish leader Abdullah Ocalan. We have held many activities and events
to protect the isolation imposed on our leader and to demand his
freedom.>
Projects for 2024
Kongra Star attaches particular importance to education of women and
girls. Despite the Turkish attacks, it has held many educational
workshops and courses in North and East Syria. <At the congress, we
discussed how to develop more projects for women in 2024. One of our
projects for 2024 is the building of villages to promote women's
economic empowerment. In 2024, we will carry out many activities and
events to demand freedom of leader Abdullah Ocalan.”
'We will strengthen our struggle'
<We attach importance to awareness-raising activities for women's
freedom, to ensure gender equality and achieve women’s rights. We will
never surrender to the Turkish attacks,> Rima Mehmud said. <In 2024, we
will keep making efforts in North and East Syria. We aim to ensure
equality and justice in society. We will strengthen our struggle in
2024.> >>

<<Women's expectations for 2024: Peace, freedom, welfare and justice
Amed (Diyarbakır)- For the people living in Turkey, 2023 is the year
full of earthquakes, floods, general elections, femicide, deepening
economic crisis and the struggle against them. The social and political
crisis in the country has affected everyone. NuJINHA spoke to some women
of Amed about their expectations for 2024. Almost all women pointed to
the economic crisis and the increase in violence against women and said
that they did not experience a peaceful moment in 2023. Wishing peace
and welfare for 2024, the women said, <A world without violence is
possible.>
'I wish a life without violence and exploitation'
Ayşe Alın: <First of all, I am against gender-based violence. As a
woman, I do not want women to be subjected to violence. Unfortunately,
there is little we can do to eliminate violence against women. As a
woman, I dream of a new year without violence, having a high level of
education and without an economic crisis. Women should be educated and
improve themselves. The economic crisis affects everyone. We live in a
rental house. I have been married for three years. In three years, we
moved six times. We will probably move from our current house. I hope
this crisis will end and the high cost of living will disappear. I want
to have a better living condition for the future of my child.>
'We wish peace and freedom'
Cayide Demirok: <Young people are unemployed. We wish for freedom and
peace in 2024 without oppression and war. Today, the price of a loaf of
white bread (125g) is 12 TL. Some people cannot even buy bread. The
prices of all products are very high. My son is also unemployed. I hope
all young people will have a job in 2024. We wish for peace and welfare
in the world.>
'All I wish is justice'
Hulya Guleş: <I wish all wars will end in 2024. People should not suffer
from financial problems anymore. I want a better life in peace. Violence
against women should end. Child abuse and femicide should end. All I
wish for is justice.>
'I wish a world without violence in 2024'
Necla Batık: <I wish a world without violence in 2024, better
educational opportunities and a better future for our children. My
children have no hope for their future. Every day, we make great efforts
to make both ends meet. The economic crisis increases violence against
women. Another problem is unemployment. All university graduates are
unemployed; people cannot buy bread or a book for their children. 2023
has been a bad year for everyone. I lost my job after the earthquakes.
We have had a bad year.>
'We should resist despite everything'
Avjin Atar: <We have faced many difficulties through 2023. We have
suffered from male violence, economic crisis and oppression. As a woman,
I have always protected myself against oppression. I am a university
student. I looked for a job for a year to cover my expenses. I had a
very bad time until I found a job. Women should be free. We should keep
resisting until all women become free. The most important thing in this
life is to resist and we, as women, should resist despite everything.
Femicide should end now.> >>

<<People of Roboski demand justice for 12 years
News Center- On December 28, 2011, Turkey witnessed one of the most
painful massacres in its history. 34 people, including 18 teenagers from
the Encu family, were killed in an airstrike launched by the Turkish Air
Force in the Roboski (Ortasu) village of Şırnak's Uludere district.
Dead bodies were taken from the scene by villagers
For a while, the massacre was hidden from the public; the mainstream
media did not report anything about the massacre. The people learned of
the massacre from opposition media outlets. The General Staff of the
Turkish Armed Forces released a statement on the massacre one day later.
The villagers took the dead bodies from the scene by using mules. After
the massacre, many commissions went to the scene to investigate the
massacre. A commission of the Human Rights Association (IHD) was one of
the delegations. Then, the IHD released a report on the massacre. The
report said that the killed people were the smugglers. <There was no
attempt by the official institutions to take dead or injured people,
therefore; villagers arrived late in the incident scene with their own
means. As a result, some injured people lost their lives due to blood
loss and freezing. Soldiers left the incident scene when villagers went
there to take the corpses. The corpses were brought to the Gülyazı
village by the villagers with their own means,> the report said.
Legal procedures
On June 11, 2013, the Diyarbakır Prosecutor's Office found negligence
rather than deliberate intent by the military staff and declared a lack
of jurisdiction and transferred the investigation to the military
prosecutor. However, the military prosecutor decided not to prosecute
the case further ın January 2014 on the ground that the authorized
soldiers had made an inevitable mistake regarding terrorist activity and
ordered the bombardment. In July 2014, the families of victims applied
to the Turkish Constitutional Court. On February 24, 2015, the Turkish
Constitutional Court rejected the applications. After the decision of
non-jurisdiction, the families of 40 citizens, including the injured
ones, applied to the European Court of Human Rights. The court issued an
inadmissibility decision regarding the application concerning the
Roboski massacre on the grounds that domestic remedies had not been
exhausted. After this decision, the families applied to the Turkish
Constitutional Court again on April 9, 2021.
The names of the killed people are: Karker Encu (16), Seyithan Encu
(21), Nadir Alma (26), Mehmet Ali Tosun (24), Şervan Encu (19), Nevzat
Encu (19), Osman Kaplan (31), Ozcan Uysal (18), Selim Encu (39), Vedat
Encu (18), Muhammet Encu (13), Mahsum Encu (17), Bilal Encu (16), Erkan
Encu (13), Husnü Encu (20), Savaş Encu (14), Cihan Encu (19), Cemal Encu
(17), Serhat Encu (15), Hamza Encu (21), Celal Encu (15), Şerafettin
Encu (18), Selam Encu (22), Bedran Encu (13), Fadıl Encu (20), Hüseyin
Encu (20), Aslan Encu (17), Şıvan Encu (13), Orhan Encu (21), Zeydan
Encu (25), Salih Encu (16), Yuksel Urek (21), Adem Ant (19) and Salih
Urek (18).
They were all involved in smuggling gasoline and cigarettes due to
economic reasons; to support their families or cover school expenses.
On the 12th anniversary of the Roboski Massacre, NuJINHA spoke to Nuray
Çevirmen, member of the Human Rights Association (IHD) Central Executive
Board. <The Roboski Massacre is actually one of the dozens of massacres
that took place in this geography,> she said, highlighting the policy of
immunity. <Discriminatory policies against the Kurdish people cause
impunity and injustice. Everyone knew that the route used by people to
cross the border. Despite that, the massacre took place in Roboski.
Although our commission revealed negligence, the massacre was buried in
the corridors of Ankara.> Nuray Çevirmen thinks that the massacres that
took place before the Roboski Massacre paved the way for the Roboski
Massacre. <The failure to respond to calls for confrontation and justice
for the Roboski Massacre paved the way for other massacres. If the
perpetrators of a massacre had not gone unpunished, other massacres
would not have taken place.> Although 12 years have passed since the
massacre, the people of Roboski still demand justice for their
loved-ones. For 12 years, the people of Roboski have been mourning for
their loved-ones.> >>
