Tunisian Protesters Show Solidarity
Jinhagency - Womens News Agency - Oct 2, 2025
{Tunisian Protesters Show Solidarity with the Global Resilience Fleet. A
nighttime demonstration took place in the Tunisian capital in response
to the Israeli navy’s interception of the Global Resilience Fleet, which
aims to break the blockade on Gaza, and the detention of six Tunisian
activists onboard. The Israeli navy intercepted the fleet in
international waters, directing it to the port of Ashdod. Six ships were
seized, and several activists, including six Tunisians, were arrested.
In protest against what they described as an Israeli overreach,
demonstrators took to the streets of Tunis on Wednesday night, October
1, condemning the detention of the fleet and its crew, who were
attempting to deliver humanitarian aid directly to Gaza. Protesters
called on the Tunisian authorities to denounce the arrest of the six
Tunisians and urged citizens to support the fleet, which carries a
peaceful humanitarian message in solidarity with the oppressed. The
Global Resilience Fleet is an international maritime initiative launched
in mid-2025 to challenge the Israeli blockade of Gaza and deliver
humanitarian aid directly to its residents. The fleet comprises over 44
civilian vessels, some small, carrying activists and aid, with around
500 participants from more than 40 countries, including
parliamentarians, lawyers, doctors, and human rights activists.}

Flotilla activists arrested
Quds News - Oct 2, 2025
{World Reacts to Israel’s Interception of Gaza-Bound Global Sumud
Flotilla and Abduction of Activists on Board
Gaza (QNN)- Israeli forces intercepted, boarded, and took control of
several ships that are part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was
attempting to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. Activists on board were
abducted, prompting widespread international condemnation.
What Happened?
Israeli naval forces intercepted a flotilla of boats carrying
humanitarian aid on Wednesday, according to statements from the flotilla
organizers. They reported that the forces boarded the vessels about 70
nautical miles (130km) off the coast of Gaza, cutting communications and
jamming signals as the flotilla neared the blockaded enclave. In total,
at least 13 vessels that are part of the flotilla have been intercepted
at sea. The flotilla in all includes more than 40 civilian boats and
about 500 activists from more than 40 countries. The raid came hours
after Italy, Spain, and Turkey withdrew their military escorts and
surveillance drones, leaving the humanitarian flotilla exposed. The
mission included South African politician Mandela Mandela, Swedish
climate activist Greta Thunberg, French MEP Rima Hassan, and former
Barcelona mayor Ada Colau. Organizers said the ships carried baby
formula, food, and medical supplies. They described the effort as
peaceful and aimed at breaking Israel’s siege on Gaza. But Israel
accused the flotilla of attempting to breach its naval blockade,
claiming that it is affiliated with Hamas. On September 30, Italy ended
its naval escort of the flotilla, halting at the 150-nautical-mile line
that Israel declared off-limits. Rome urged participants to abandon the
mission. Spain followed suit on October 1. Defense Minister Margarita
Robles said the Spanish warship Furor would track the flotilla but not
intervene unless “absolutely necessary.” Earlier the same day, Turkey’s
Akinci drone providing aerial cover left the area around 01:45 UTC. The
withdrawals left the flotilla without international protection when
Israel launched its assault. The flotilla had already faced multiple
drone strikes and firebomb attacks in September. Activists said Israel
was trying to intimidate them into turning back. Despite the risks,
flotilla leaders vowed to continue until aid reaches Gaza, where more
than 66,000 Palestinians have been killed since October 2023. “This
mission is peaceful, non-violent, and urgent,” the group said. “The
people of Gaza are starving and under siege. We cannot stop.” The
Israeli attack on the flotilla sparked international outrage.

Italian strike protest 4 the Global Sumud Flotilla
Quds News - Oct 1, 2025
{Italy’s Largest Union Calls Nationwide Strike Over Israeli Attack on
Gaza Flotilla. Rome (QNN)- Italy’s Unione Sindacale di Base (USB) trade
union announced a nationwide general strike for October 3. The move came
after reports that Israel intercepted the Gaza-bound aid flotilla known
as the Global Sumud Flotilla. The union said it was fulfilling its
earlier pledge to halt work if the convoy was attacked. It accused
Israel of violating international law. “Attacked the Global Sumud
Flotilla Israel attacks international law. Now is the time to block
everything,” USB declared on X, the US-based social media platform. The
group urged immediate mobilizations “in all squares” before the strike.
On Friday, Italy’s largest trade union, CGIL, also threatened a general
strike if the humanitarian flotilla was blocked or attacked. The
coordinated action signals rising labor opposition in Italy to Israel’s
military campaign and its blockade of Gaza. The Global Sumud Flotilla
set sail at the end of August. It carried humanitarian aid and medical
supplies bound for Gaza. More than 50 ships, the largest convoy in
years, joined the mission. On board were 532 civilian supporters from
over 45 countries. The flotilla had been expected to reach Gaza’s coast
by Thursday morning under normal conditions. Gaza’s 2.4 million people
have been living under Israeli blockade for nearly 18 years. Israel
tightened the siege further on March 2, closing all border crossings and
blocking food, medicine, and aid. The restrictions pushed Gaza into
famine as aid trucks piled up at the borders. Since October 2023,
Israeli attacks have killed more than 66,100 Palestinians, most of them
women and children. Constant bombardment has made Gaza uninhabitable.

Jazeera - Oct 1, 2025 - By Hanna Duggal
{Gaza Sumud flotilla: How Israel breaks international maritime law
The Global Sumud Flotilla says its fleet of over 50 ships has entered
the ‘high-risk zone.’ A Gaza-bound aid flotilla is currently sailing
toward the enclave, entering a high-risk zone where previous missions
have faced attacks and interceptions. On Wednesday, Israel’s public
broadcaster Kan reported that the Israeli military is preparing to “take
control” of the flotilla with naval commandos and warships. Israel wont
tow all 50 vessels however and will sink some at sea, Kan said. Israel
intends to detain hundreds of activists on naval ships, question them
then deport them via the port of Ashdod.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail from Spain on August 31, is
the largest maritime mission to Gaza to date. It brings together more
than 50 ships and delegations from at least 44 countries, as part of an
international effort to challenge Israel’s naval blockade and deliver
aid to Gaza. So, is Israel entitled to board ships that are in
international waters? The answer is no, here’s how territorial and
international waters work.
Which waters does a country control?
Coastal countries control the waters closest to their shores, called
territorial waters, which extend 12 nautical miles (22km) from the
coast. In this zone, the state has full sovereignty, just like over its
land. Beyond that, they have rights over up to 200 nautical miles (370
km) of ocean, including the water and seafloor. This area is called the
Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In the EEZ, countries can regulate
activities such as fishing, mining, drilling, and other energy projects,
while still allowing other countries freedom of navigation. France has
the largest EEZ, covering approximately 10.7 million square kilometres
(4.2 million sq miles), thanks to its overseas territories. It is
followed by the US, Australia, Russia, and the UK.
Where are international waters?
Covering about 64 percent of the ocean, the high seas lie beyond any
country’s territorial waters and economic zones and are not controlled
by a single state, with their use governed by international agreements.
What are the laws of the high seas?
The laws of the high seas are governed by the 1982 UN Convention on the
Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). It stipulates that all states can enjoy freedom
of movement of ships in the high seas and aircraft can fly freely. It
also allows the laying of subsea cables and pipelines, as well as
fishing, scientific research and the construction of islands. All three
of which are subject to international agreements and laws. Ships that
are on the high seas are subject to the jurisdiction of the flag they
fly, except those conducting piracy and other unauthorised activities.
Israel has attacked previous flotillas in international water. Several
Freedom Flotilla vessels have attempted to break the blockade of Gaza
since 2010. All were intercepted or attacked by Israel, mostly in
international waters where it has no territorial rights. The most deadly
occurred on May 31, 2010, when Israeli commandos raided the Mavi Marmara
in international waters. The commandos killed 10 activists, most of them
Turkish, and injured dozens more, sparking global outrage and severely
straining Israel-Turkiye relations. In 2024, amid ongoing flotilla
missions delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza, UN experts stated that:
“The Freedom Flotilla has the right of free passage in international
waters, and Israel must not interfere with its freedom of navigation,
long recognised under international law.” The Sumud Flotilla had been
sailing through international waters and into Palestinian territorial
waters, where it has the legal right to navigate and deliver
humanitarian aid. According to Stephen Cotton, the General Secretary of
the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), representing more
than 16.5 million transport workers globally, “The law of the sea is
clear: attacking or seizing non-violent, humanitarian vessels in
international waters is illegal and unacceptable.” “Such actions
endanger lives and undermine the basic principles that keep the seas
safe for all. This is not only about seafarers, it’s about the safety of
everyone at sea, whether on a commercial ship, a humanitarian vessel, or
a fishing boat. States cannot pick and choose when to respect
international law. The seas must not be turned into a theatre of
war.” Cotton told Al Jazeera. According to the Freedom Flotilla
Coalition, the mission is not only lawful but also protected under a
comprehensive set of international legal instruments. Including:
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) –
Guarantees freedom of navigation on the high seas
San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at
Sea – Prohibits blockades that cause starvation or disproportionate
suffering and forbids the targeting of neutral humanitarian missions
UN Security Council Resolutions 2720 and 2728 – These binding
instruments demand unimpeded humanitarian access and the removal of all
barriers to aid delivery
Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide –
Includes the prevention of acts deliberately endangering civilians
Fourth Geneva Convention – Imposes an obligation to permit the free
passage of humanitarian aid and prohibit interference with relief
operations and the targeting of civilian infrastructure
Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court – Criminalises the
starvation of civilians as a method of warfare and willful obstruction
of humanitarian aid.} Video-Source: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/10/1/gaza-sumud-flotilla-how-israel-breaks-international-maritime-law

{Israel intercepts Gaza Sumud flotilla vessels: What we know so
far….Have other governments responded to Israel’s arrest of flotilla
activists?....
Multiple countries have condemned Israel’s actions.
Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim said he condemns in the “strongest terms”
Israel’s “intimidation and coercion” of vessels carrying “unarmed
civilians and life-saving humanitarian supplies for Gaza”. Israel, he
said in a post on X, had shown “utter contempt not only for the rights
of the Palestinian people but also for the conscience of the world”. At
least 12 Malaysian nationals are on the boats intercepted by Israel so
far.
Ireland’s Foreign Minister Simon Harris said he has spoken to European
Union counterparts who are part of the Gaza flotilla after the raid by
Israeli forces and the arrest of activists attempting to deliver aid by
sea to the Palestinian territory. He called the Israeli action “very
concerning”, describing the flotilla as “a peaceful mission to shine a
light on a horrific humanitarian catastrophe”. Ireland’s Foreign
Ministry said that its embassy in Tel Aviv was speaking with Israeli
authorities. “Our focus now is on assisting citizens immediately
impacted and their families. This will be the priority for our team over
the coming hours,” the ministry said.
Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has expelled Israeli diplomats from
the South American country in response to the Israeli detention of Gaza
flotilla activists, including two Colombian nationals. In a post on X,
Petro also said a free trade agreement between Colombia and Israel had
been “denounced immediately”. He added, in a separate post: “Here
Netanyahu demonstrates his worldwide hypocrisy and why he is a worldwide
criminal who must be captured”.
Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yvan Gil said on Telegram that Israel’s
move to stop the boats from getting to Gaza “exposes, once again, the
criminal nature of the Zionist regime”. He added that “the blockade of
humanitarian aid is a tool of deliberate war, the continuation of
genocide by other means, seeing to annihilate the population by
starvation to complement their indiscriminate bombings”.
Turkiye’s Foreign Ministry has condemned Israel’s naval interception of
the Sumud Flotilla. The ministry called Israel’s actions a “terrorist”
act.} Video-Source: https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2025/10/1/israel-intercepts-gaza-sumud-flotilla-vessels-what-we-know-so-far

{Israel Intercepts Sumud Flotilla Ships After Italian, Spanish, and
Turkish Forces Withdraw
International Waters (QNN)- Israeli naval forces stormed two ships from
the Global Sumud Flotilla on Wednesday, kidnapping participants and
redirecting the convoy to Ashdod port. The raid came hours after Italy,
Spain, and Turkey withdrew their military escorts and surveillance
drones, leaving the humanitarian flotilla exposed. The Global Sumud
Flotilla said commandos boarded the ships Alma and Sirius and began
taking control. Earlier, about 20 Israeli warships surrounded the
flotilla. Organizers reported that communications were cut as the
assault began. In a morning statement, the flotilla said Israeli
warships harassed Alma and Sirius with dangerous maneuvers and blinding
lights, forcing captains to take evasive action. French lawmaker Marie
Mesure, onboard Sirius, said she witnessed at least two unidentified
vessels, one of which approached dangerously close. “They used a
powerful light against us and cut radar and internet communications,”
she said. The Global Sumud Flotilla left Spain in late August with 45
boats carrying hundreds of pro-Palestine and anti-genocide activists
from more than 40 countries. The mission included South African
politician Mandela Mandela, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg,
French MEP Rima Hassan, and former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau. Organizers
