At least 29 children and elderly people have died from “starvation-related” deaths in the Gaza Strip in recent days, the Palestinian health minister says, warning that thousands more are at risk as limited aid begins trickling into the bombarded enclave. Majed Abu Ramadan told reporters on Thursday that earlier comments by the United Nations aid chief to the BBC that 14,000 babies could die without desperately needed food aid were “very realistic”, but could be an underestimation. Israel has allowed limited deliveries of humanitarian aid into Gaza amid a wave of international condemnation of its 11-week total blockade on the territory, which spurred warnings of mass famine. But UN officials have said the humanitarian aid entering Gaza is “nowhere near enough” to meet the needs of the population in the war-torn enclave. About 90 aid trucks entered Gaza on Thursday, but Abu Ramadan said “very few shipments went inside Gaza”. The aid that was allowed in was limited to “flour for bakeries”, he added. The president of the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Younis al-Khatib, also said Palestinians have yet to receive any supplies so far. “No civilian has received anything yet,” al-Khatib told reporters. He said most of the aid trucks are still at the Karem Abu Salem crossing, known as Kerem Shalom to Israelis, in southern Gaza. As limited deliveries enter the Strip, the Israeli military has continued to launch attacks across the enclave, with medical sources telling Al Jazeera that at least 51 Palestinians have been killed since dawn on Thursday. At least 53,655 Palestinians have been killed and more than 121,000 others injured since Israel’s war on Gaza began in October 2023, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum said that while Palestinians have welcomed the influx of aid, it is a “drop in the ocean” compared with the population’s needs. “Five hundred aid trucks are needed on a daily basis in order to avert the current food crisis in the territory,” Abu Azzoum explained. Still, Gaza resident Ahmed Abed al-Daym said the aid trucks were a “positive sign” amid dire conditions. “Our homes are empty – there is no bread, and our children are going hungry,” he told Al Jazeera. “In many households, bread has completely disappeared. What people urgently need is a steady and sufficient flow of flour and other essentials. Unfortunately, the limited aid that has entered so far falls far short of meeting our needs.” Another resident, Reem Zidiah, said that due to the mass starvation that Gaza is enduring, no one is safe in the besieged enclave. “All of us here in Gaza, we don’t think about tomorrow because we don’t know what will happen tomorrow – whether we’re going to live or die,” Zidiah told Al Jazeera. {Guterres strongly condemns killing of Israeli diplomats in US capital
The Capital Jewish Museum is a historical society and museum in Washington, D.C. UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the “appalling killing” of two Israeli embassy officials in the United States capital, stressing that “nothing can justify such a horrific act,” his Spokesperson said in a statement on Thursday. The diplomats were gunned down as they left an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in central Washington DC, on Wednesday night, where the American Jewish Committee was hosting a reception. They were identified as Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Milgrim, 26, who were about to be engaged, according to officials and family members. A suspect was taken into custody.
Justice and sympathy
“The Secretary-General reiterates his consistent condemnation of attacks against diplomatic officials,” the statement said. He called for the perpetrator to be brought to justice and extended his sympathies to the families and loved ones of the victims and to the Government of Israel. The lone suspect, identified as Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, was apprehended shortly after the murders. He shouted pro-Palestinian slogans while in custody, according to media reports.
A ‘heinous antisemitic act’
The head of a UN platform that promotes intercultural dialogue and understanding has also expressed his strong condemnation. “This heinous antisemitic act is unacceptable and unjustifiable. My thoughts go to their families, their colleagues, and the State of Israel,” said Miguel Ángel Moratinos, High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC). Senior politicians from across the world have also expressed their condemnation. The killings occurred against the backdrop of the war in Gaza, which began on 7 October 2023 following Hamas-led attacks on Israel which left roughly 1,200 people dead while another 250 were taken hostage. Israeli foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar described the attack as “the direct consequence of the virulent and toxic antisemitic rhetoric against Israel and Jewish communities around the world that has been going on since October 7.”
‘An unbearable loss’
Mr. Lischinsky was a research assistant in the political department at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, while Ms. Milgrim organized trips to the country. They were killed after attending an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee focused on humanitarian aid for Gaza, according to media reports. The Spokesperson of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, Tal Naim, described their deaths as “an unbearable loss.” She tweeted a photo of the couple below a message which said that “instead of walking you down the aisle, we are walking with you to your graves.”}

Until earlier this week, no commercial or humanitarian supplies had been allowed into Gaza since 2 March, deepening an already catastrophic hunger crisis and sparking widespread condemnation from the international community. According to the UN World Health Organization (WHO) at least 57 children have reportedly died from the effects of malnutrition, according to the local health authorities. The number is likely an underestimate and is expected to increase if the aid blockade continues. In their latest report, respected and UN-partnered food insecurity experts warned that nearly 71 000 children under the age of five are expected to be acutely malnourished over the next 11 months unless Gazans can access sufficient food and healthcare support.
Working through the night
Video footage published online Thursday by the UN World Food Programme (WFP) showed aid crews hurrying to offload sacks of flour from trucks at a floodlit warehouse. Elsewhere in the storage hangar, other images showed large quantities of dough being made in an industrial mixer. “Our teams are working non-stop to get bakeries running again,” the agency said, referring to the 25 facilities it had to close on 31 March when wheat flour and fuel ran out. “But it's nowhere near enough to support everyone in need. We need more trucks, more food, in now,” the UN agency warned. After 19 months of constant Israeli bombardment which continues today, one in five Gazans faces starvation, food insecurity experts have warned. And reiterating the urgent need for more lifesaving supplies to enter the shattered enclave, the UN aid coordination office, OCHA, stressed that much more aid will be needed to avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
No fuel allowed in
No hygiene products or fuel have been allowed into the enclave by the Israeli authorities, the UN agency noted. “The UN and its partners have been engaging with the Israeli authorities to identify the best possible route from Kerem Shalom onward into Gaza to ensure the flow of aid is not disrupted or suspended,” OCHA explained in its latest update. “Partners are in touch with community leaders in Gaza to mitigate the risk of looting and ensure that the supplies entering Gaza reach the people who rely on them.” Meanwhile, Gazans continue to contend with daily bombardment and shelling across the Strip, with dozens reported killed on Tuesday. A day later, OCHA noted that the health authorities on an urgent request for blood donors to treat the sick and injured. “Amid the hostilities, large numbers of people continue to be displaced – once again fleeing for their lives amid intense bombing of their communities and with no safe place to seek shelter or supplies,” the UN agency said. It reported that a full 80 per cent of Gaza is either subject to displacement orders or located in Israeli-militarized zones which require aid teams to coordinate their movements with the Israeli authorities. “Partners report that over the past few days, almost half of people newly displaced have fled with none of their belongings,” OCHA said. “The ongoing displacement of Gaza’s population is putting immense pressure on humanitarian teams, especially when there is no food or other basic supplies to offer.”}

He said Israel later plans to create a “sterile zone” there, free of Hamas, where the population, which has repeatedly evacuated and relocated throughout the war, would be moved and receive supplies. More than a dozen governments have condemned Israel after its forces fired in the direction of a diplomatic delegation near the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli army said its soldiers fired “warning shots” after the foreign diplomats, who included representatives of the European Union, the United Kingdom, Russia and China, deviated from a previously agreed-on route. “[Israeli] soldiers operating in the area fired warning shots to distance them away,” Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The state of Qatar strongly condemns the Israeli occupation forces for opening fire on an international diplomatic delegation during its visit to the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, and considered as a violation of international laws, conventions, and diplomatic norms.
Turkiye’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
We condemn in the strongest terms the opening of fire by Israeli soldiers on a group of diplomats, including an official from the Turkish Consulate General in Jerusalem, during their visit to the city of Jenin. The targeting of diplomats constitutes a grave threat not only to individual safety but also to the mutual respect and trust that form the foundation of inter-state relations.

The Israeli military justified the action by stating that the diplomatic delegation had invaded an ‘unauthorised area’. However, there is no record of this occurring or of any officer approaching the delegation to verbally warn them in a timely manner.
What happened violates the provisions of Article 29 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which establishes the inviolability of diplomatic agents. All States Parties to the aforementioned Convention, including Israel, are obliged to respect it. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will request the Israeli embassy in Mexico to provide the clarifications warranted by the case.}

Medical sources tell Al Jazeera that at least 93 people have been killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip since dawn on Wednesday.
International condemnation is mounting after Israeli forces fired “warning” shots towards foreign diplomats visiting the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank.
The United Nations’s chief spokesperson said the limited humanitarian aid “finally” entering Gaza is “nowhere near enough to meet the needs” of the war-torn enclave’s famished population.}

British police say Mo Chara displayed a flag of Lebanon’s Hezbollah at a concert. A member of the Irish rap band Kneecap has been charged with a “terrorism” offence in the United Kingdom for waving a flag of the armed Lebanese group Hezbollah at a concert in November 2024 in London. Liam O’Hanna, whose stage name is Mo Chara, is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on June 18, charged under the Terrorism Act, British police said on Wednesday. Kneecap has been vocal in its support for the Palestinian cause since the October 7, 2023-led Hamas attacks and Israel’s devastating war on Gaza, equating the struggles of the Irish under British colonial rule to that of Palestinians living under Israeli occupation and siege. Pro-Palestinian chants are a regular fixture in their gigs. The band says they have been targets of a smear campaign for calling out Israel’s genocidal war. The Belfast trio is also well known for its political and satirical lyrics and use of symbolism associated with the Irish Republican movement, which seeks to unite Northern Ireland, currently part of the UK, with the Republic of Ireland. More than 3,600 people were killed during three decades of violence in Northern Ireland during “The Troubles” involving the Irish Republican Army (IRA), pro-British Loyalist militias and the UK security forces. Kneecap takes its name from a brutal punishment, which involved being shot in the kneecaps, that was meted out by paramilitary groups to informers and drug dealers. The band has been praised for invigorating the Irish- language cultural scene in Northern Ireland, where the status of the language remains a contested political issue in a society still split between Protestant British Unionists and Catholic Irish Nationalist communities. It has also been criticised for lyrics laden with expletives and drug references. Kneecap came under intense scrutiny and criticism last month during their performance at the music festival Coachella in California when they projected the words “F*** Israel. Free Palestine.” on stage. “The Irish not so long ago were persecuted by the Brits, but we were never bombed from the f****** skies with nowhere to go! The Palestinians have nowhere to go – it’s their f****** home and they’re bombing them from the sky. If you’re not calling it a genocide what the f*** are you calling it?” read the words projected by Mo Chara. Kneecap came under renewed scrutiny at the start of this month when UK intelligence said they would investigate comments made by the rap group about UK and Middle East politics. They were reported to police over footage from a 2024 concert in which a band member appeared to say: “The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.” Footage from another concert, in 2023, appears to show a member of the trio shouting “Up Hamas, Up Hezbollah” – the UK considers both to be “terrorist” organisations. In response, Kneecap said it had “never supported Hamas or Hezbollah,” and accused “establishment figures” of taking comments out of context to “manufacture moral hysteria” because of the band’s criticism of Israel’s attacks on Palestinians in Gaza. Several Kneecap gigs have been cancelled as a result of the controversy, and some British lawmakers have called on organisers of June’s Glastonbury Festival to scrap a planned performance by the group.}

{Is European pressure on Israel likely to make a difference?
The UK pauses trade talks as the EU threatens to review ties with Israel. Israel is facing condemnation from some of its strongest allies over its increasing aggression in Gaza. The UK is cancelling new trade talks and the EU is reviewing old agreements, while both are imposing sanctions on Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank. The two powers say they cannot stand by while Israel expands military operations, increases air strikes and starves Palestinians in Gaza with its total blockade. But critics are asking why they did not step in before.
Will the new measures be imposed?
And most importantly: Will any of this change the reality on the ground for the Palestinians?}
