Leila Khaled
Jinha - Womens News Agency - March 18, 2025
<<Leila Khaled hospitalized after brain bleed
Leila Khaled, a leading figure of the Palestinian struggle for freedom
and member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP),
has been hospitalized after suffering a bleed on her brain.
News Center- Leila Khaled, a leading figure of the Palestinian struggle
for freedom and member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of
Palestine (PFLP), has been hospitalized after suffering a bleed on her
brain that caused a stroke. “Send your good vibes to Comrade Leila
Khalid, hospitalized with an intracranial hemorrhage. Red salute to our
beloved comrade,” Vijay Prashad, an Indian-American writer and
journalist, wrote on the social media platform X.
Who is Leila Khaled?
Leila Khaled was born on April 9, 1944, in Haifa to Arab parents. During
the 1947–1948 civil war in Mandatory Palestine, Her family fled to
Lebanon on April 13, 1948, as part of the 1948 Palestinian expulsion and
flight, leaving her father behind. At the age of 15, she joined the Arab
Nationalist Movement, originally established in the late-1940s by George
Habash. The Palestinian branch of this movement became the Popular Front
for the Liberation of Palestine after the 1967 Six-Day War. Then, she
spent some time teaching in Kuwait. On August 29, 1969, Leila Khaled was
part of a team that hijacked TWA Flight 840 on its way from Rome to Tel
Aviv, diverting the Boeing 707 to Damascus. Leila Khaled claimed she had
ordered the pilot to fly over Haifa, so she could see her birthplace.
After the passengers disembarked, the hijackers blew up the nose section
of the aircraft.
After this hijacking, Eddie Adams took a photograph of her holding an
AK-47 rifle and wearing a keffiyeh and this photograph was reproduced in
many publications. On September 6, 1970, Leila Khaled and Patrick
Argüello attempted to hijack El Al Flight 219 from Amsterdam to New York
City. Argüello was shot and injured by sky marshals. The pilot diverted
the aircraft to Heathrow Airport in London. Leila Khaled was arrested
though later released during a hostage exchange.>>

<<Israeli attacks in Gaza kill more than 70, including newborn baby
Women and children among those reported dead in predawn attacks across
northern and southern Gaza.
Israel’s renewed bombardment of Gaza is continuing for a third
consecutive day, with more than 70 people killed in predawn attacks,
including a newborn baby. At least 71 people were killed overnight and
early on Thursday in southern and northern Gaza, according to health
officials in the coastal enclave. Many others were injured in the
attacks. Palestinian news outlet Quds News Network said at least 20
people were killed in Khan Younis in the south after Israeli forces
struck several houses in the area. Meanwhile, in northern Gaza, an
attack on a family home in the as-Sultan neighbourhood, west of Beit
Lahiya, killed at least seven people. “The Israeli attacks across the
Gaza Strip have intensified, especially at dawn, when at least 11
residential buildings were flattened by the Israeli forces,” said Al
Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from central Gaza. “We understand
that the death toll has sharply increased to 71 Palestinians.” “Among
those victims who have been killed today were a newborn baby alongside
children and women,” Abu Azzoum said. “There has been a clear strategic
approach that Israel has been using, which does not pass any sort of
warning to civilians before striking the buildings that they are taking
refuge in,” he added. The latest killings come after Israel shattered
the nearly two-month-long ceasefire in Gaza on Tuesday. Since then,
Israeli attacks have killed more than 710 Palestinians and injured 900
others, Khalil Al-Daqran, spokesperson for the Gaza Ministry of Health,
told Al Jazeera Arabic. About 70 percent of the injured are children and
women, he added.
UN demands answers
On Wednesday, a United Nations foreign staffer was killed and five other
workers were wounded in an Israeli air raid on a UN site in central
Gaza.
The UN humanitarian aid chief, Tom Fletcher, described the attack as
“infuriating”. He said the strikes targeted a “clearly designated” UN
compound in Gaza, and the UN demands “answers” while “we grieve with the
family of our colleague”. “International law is clear. Civilians –
including UN staff and humanitarian workers – must not be targeted. The
international community must join us in insisting on a genuine
investigation and accountability,” Fletcher said in a statement, without
attributing blame for the killing. Israel’s resumption of attacks drew
widespread condemnation, including from UN Secretary-General Antonio
Guterres, who said he was “outraged by the Israeli air strikes in Gaza”.
As Israeli troops resumed ground operations in Gaza on Wednesday, they
also reclaimed control of the Netzarim Corridor, effectively cutting off
northern Gaza from the rest of the enclave. “The Israeli military’s move
to reoccupy the Netzarim Corridor is bringing back bad memories from
before the ceasefire,” said Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud, reporting from
Gaza City. “During the ceasefire, Palestinians could cross it to get
back to their homes in the north. But not any more. Now people’s
movement is quite limited. “Its reoccupation is a reminder that the
Israeli military is advancing for a larger-scale operation,” he said,
adding that before the truce, Netzarim served as a launching pad for
many Israeli military operations and was “a death trap for many
Palestinians”.
The breakdown of the ceasefire has also been met with anger in Israel,
where many support the families of captives seeking the return of their
loved ones from Gaza. Thousands of Israeli protesters massed in
Jerusalem on Wednesday, accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu of resuming attacks on Gaza without regard for the safety of
the captives still held in the coastal enclave.

<<Trump moves to deport Indian pro-Palestinian Georgetown University
student
Badar Khan Suri detained by Department of Homeland Security after being
designated for removal.
An Indian postdoctoral researcher at Georgetown University who spoke out
against Israel’s war in Gaza is facing deportation after being detained
under United States President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Badar Khan Suri was designated for deportation for “spreading Hamas
propaganda and promoting antisemitism” on social media, Tricia
McLaughlin, an assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland
Security (DHS), said on Wednesday. “Suri has close connections to a
known or suspected terrorist, who is a senior advisor to Hamas,”
McLaughlin said on X. “The Secretary of State issued a determination on
March 15, 2025 that Suri’s activities and presence in the United States
rendered him deportable under INA section 237(a)(4)(C)(i).” McLaughlin
did not provide evidence for her claim of ties between Suri and Hamas,
the group that governs Gaza.
Suri, a postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University’s Alwaleed Bin
Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, is currently being held
at a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility at
Alexandria international airport in Louisiana, according to ICE’s online
detention locator. Ahmad Hassan, a lawyer representing Suri, on
Wednesday filed a petition for the researcher’s release at the US
District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, according to a
court filing. Hassan did not immediately respond to a request for
comment from Al Jazeera. Suri’s wife, Mapheze Saleh, confirmed to Al
Jazeera that she is a US citizen. She directed further questions to a
legal representative for Suri. In a statement to Al Jazeera, a
spokesperson for Georgetown University said Suri had been granted a
student visa to carry out “doctoral research on peace-building in Iraq
and Afghanistan”. “We are not aware of him engaging in any illegal
activity, and we have not received a reason for his detention,” the
spokesperson said.
“We support our community members’ rights to free and open inquiry,
deliberation and debate, even if the underlying ideas may be difficult,
controversial or objectionable. We expect the legal system to adjudicate
this case fairly.” An X account using Suri’s name, likeness, and
Georgetown University affiliation made a number of criticisms of Israel
and expressions of support for the Palestinian cause. In a post in June,
the account accused India of being “an enabler of genocide” after the
Palestinian-run Quds News Network posted footage purporting to show the
remnants of an Israeli missile labelled “Made in India”. “From being an
ally of Palestinians, to enabler of a genocide. What a disgrace for Made
in India, to supply missiles to Israel so that Palestinian children can
be butchered,” Suri said.
“Change of values for blood money. Shame.”
In an October 2023 post, the account said many Indians supported Israel
for the “hate of Muslims”, not “for the love of Israel”. Suri’s
detention comes less than two weeks after the DHS arrested Columbia
University student Mahmoud Khalil over his involvement in
pro-Palestinian protests.
On Wednesday, a federal court ruled that Khalil, a permanent US
resident, could proceed with a legal challenge against the Trump
administration’s order for his deportation. Judge Jesse Furman ruled
that Khalil’s argument that his removal would violate his free speech
and due process rights under the US Constitution warranted “careful
review”.

<<Israel’s Netanyahu ‘backed down on signed agreement’, Hamas official
says
As Israeli assaults across Gaza resume, Hamas accuses Benjamin Netanyahu
of bad faith.
A Hamas official has said Israel must face pressure to comply with a
Gaza ceasefire agreement it has reneged on, insisting there is no need
for new deals when a signed one already exists. Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu on Tuesday said he ordered attacks claiming Hamas had rejected
proposals to secure a ceasefire extension in Gaza. The wave of attacks
across the besieged territory killed hundreds of people and shattered
two months of relative calm. “Why do we have to present proposals while
there exists a signed agreement with international parties acting as
guarantors?” Taher al-Nono, media adviser for the head of the Hamas
political bureau, told Al Jazeera. “There is also a Security Council
resolution. We have positively responded to all the efforts made towards
us. It was Netanyahu that has backed down on the agreement. It was
Netanyahu who turned a blind eye to it. Therefore, it is Netanyahu, not
Hamas or the resistance, that should be pressured to comply.” Al-Nono
added that Hamas is communicating with mediators and international
actors to stop Israeli aggression in Gaza. On Tuesday, Palestinians who
had returned to their damaged and destroyed homes after the ceasefire
came into effect were also targeted by Israel’s relentless bombing as
entire families were wiped out in seconds. Hamas has said it views
Israel’s latest attacks as a unilateral cancellation of the ceasefire
deal. “Netanyahu and his extremist government are making a decision to
overturn the ceasefire agreement, exposing prisoners in Gaza to an
unknown fate,” Hamas said in a statement on Tuesday. It called on people
in Arab and Islamic nations, along with the “free people of the world”,
to take to the streets to protest against the assault.
