<<Bethlehem carvers fret over second Easter without tourists
Bethlehem artisans face a worsening crisis as Israel’s war on Gaza halts tourism
and US tariffs threaten exports.
On most Easter holidays, the cobbled streets of Bethlehem — the occupied West
Bank town revered as the birthplace of Jesus — would be bustling with tourists.
Pilgrims and sightseers once packed the souvenir shops, providing a vital
lifeline for local artisans. But since Israel’s war on Gaza erupted in October
2023, the usual flow of visitors has dried up. Attalah Zacharia, a veteran olive
wood carver, now relies heavily on exports to Europe and the United States. But
even that stream of income is now in jeopardy, as recently announced US tariffs
threaten to choke off the few remaining sales. Easter and Christmas are
traditionally high seasons for Bethlehem, where tourism accounts for 70 percent
of the city’s annual income. “Bethlehem as a tourist destination has faced a
very difficult period during the last two years,” said Anton Salman, the city’s
mayor. Without visitors, the town’s artisan workshops have fallen eerily quiet.
In Zacharia’s store, rows of intricately carved crucifixes and nativity
figurines gather dust. Palestinian carvers sit idle, surrounded by the wares
they once sold to a global clientele.
“There is no tourism,” Zacharia said, “so there is no work”. His workshop, a
family business established in the West Bank in 1960, has been forced to slash
its workforce from 25 to just 10 employees. Zacharia now opens only two days a
week. He estimates his business has suffered a 75 percent decline since the
start of the war. Piles of the soft, richly grained olive wood traditionally
used for Bethlehem’s carvings lie stacked outside his shop. On a long workbench,
miniature figures of Jesus on the cross are lined up, each unique due to the
wood’s natural markings. “Before, of course, the situation was completely
normal, the entire crew was working,” Zacharia said. “I don’t know what the
future holds.” Israel resumed its bombardment of Gaza last month, breaking a
ceasefire that had begun in January. With no end in sight to the conflict,
tourism in Israel and the occupied West Bank has plummeted. Compounding the
crisis, Israel has barred entry to most of the 150,000 Palestinians from the
West Bank who once worked in Israel, dealing a heavy blow to the Palestinian
economy — which contracted by 25 percent in the past year. Bassem Giacaman,
another seasoned woodworker whose shop overlooks Manger Square, momentarily
perks up when a rare customer enters his factory. US President Donald Trump this
week delayed the implementation of new import tariffs for 90 days after they
triggered a four-day market rout and raised fears of a looming global recession.
But for business owners like Giacaman, the reprieve offers only a temporary
relief. If the tariffs are enforced, he says, the consequences will be dire.
Already, two clients have put their orders on hold. With most Palestinian
exports routed through Israeli markets, artisans face the risk of a 17 percent
tax on their goods. “I’ll have to increase my prices,” he said. “It will be
damaging to every business in the West Bank.” Giacaman says one of his
handcrafted wooden crucifixes even made its way into the hands of Trump. He
proudly shows on his phone a photograph of the former US president holding the
miniature cross. While the image offers a moment of pride, it does not reflect
broader political sentiment. He adds that neither he nor many other Palestinians
support Trump.>>

<<Palestinian woman who lost leg in Israeli airstrike: I believe the future will
be better
“Despite all the suffering, I still believe the future will be better,” said
Sabreen Al-Khairy, a Palestinian woman who has lost one of her legs in an
Israeli airstrike, demanding the end of the war.
Gaza- “We stayed in a tent in the southern Gaza Strip for about one and a half
years. Following the ceasefire, we decided to return home. People from all ages
were very happy. However, Israel resumed its attacks. My 4-year-old cousin was
killed and I lost one of my legs in an Israeli airstrike.”
Sabreen Al-Khairy is one of the Palestinian women, who have lost their relatives
and injured in Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.
‘There is no medication other than painkillers’
Sabreen Al-Khairy was transferred to a hospital and underwent complex surgeries
after being injured. She should go abroad for treatment; however, she has to
stay in the Gaza Strip due to the siege imposed by Israel. “I feel unbearable
pain, as if thousands of volts of electricity are applied to my body. There is
no medication other than painkillers.”
Sabreen Al-Khairy is very scared of the constant sounds of bombings and fighter
jets. “Whenever I hear these sounds, I feel like I'm going to die. Israeli
forces now issue evacuation orders twice a week across the Gaza Strip. There are
dozens of patients like me and forcing them to go to another place will have
serious negative consequences. Israeli forces order civilians to leave hospitals
and centers in order to leave them an unknown fate of hunger, poverty and
tents.”
‘I believe the future will be better’
Before Israel resumed its attacks on the Gaza Strip, Sabreen Al-Khairy had
planned her wedding. “Before the attacks, I went shopping with my fiancée.
However, I lost my leg in an Israeli airstrike on March 18,” said Sabreen Al-Khairy,
who wishes to walk again. “Despite all the suffering, I still believe the future
will be better.”>>

<<Opinions
France can and must do more than recognising Palestinian statehood
The French government has the moral and legal obligation to act against the
genocide in Gaza and the Israeli occupation.
On Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France is
preparing to recognise Palestinian statehood within a few months. If it
proceeds, Paris would become the 12th European Union member to officially accept
the existence of the Palestinian state. Last year, Slovenia, Ireland and Spain
did so, bringing the total number of EU states recognising Palestine to 11 out
of 27.. The French recognition would be a significant step in the right
direction, especially if it affirms Palestine’s 1967 borders and East Jerusalem
as its capital, respecting international law provisions and the international
consensus. This could move other European countries to do the same, including
Luxembourg and Portugal and could put significant pressure on others, notably
the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Belgium. However, France is at risk of
turning its recognition of Palestine into another empty gesture to save face
amid growing opposition among Europeans to the Israeli occupation of Palestine
and the genocide in Gaza. Under Macron, France has been far from meeting its
legal and political obligations towards Palestine, turning a blind eye to
Israel’s horrific crimes and violations. In this context, the French
announcement can be seen as a diplomatic move that is too little, too late.
Until recently, Western powers largely conditioned the recognition of Palestine
on the outcome of peace negotiations, which in reality meant giving Israel a
veto right over Palestinian statehood. This is because Israel does not want
negotiations to produce a solution – whether a two-state one along the 1967
borders or a one-state one in which Palestinians and Israelis have equal rights.
Israeli law opposes recognition of Palestine and the fulfilment of the
Palestinian right to self-determination, but Western powers have continued to
act as if this was not the case. Israel was given this leverage over Palestine
despite the fact that its own statehood was based on United Nations Resolution
181, which called for the creation of two states, and its membership in the UN
was conditioned on the implementation of Resolutions 181 and 194 – the latter
pertaining to the right of return for Palestinian refugees. Successive Israeli
governments have systematically violated both resolutions as well as many others
without facing any consequences from their Western allies. Now that the Israeli
government has finally made clear that its plan is ethnic cleansing and
annexation of all of Palestine, some Western countries seem to be reconsidering
their stance and are opting to recognise Palestinian statehood. While
recognition is important, it cannot be the only step a country such as France
should take to implement the Palestinian right to self-determination. France is
a former colonial power in the Middle East, a permanent member of the UN
Security Council, a leading member of the EU, one of Israel’s most important
trading partners and an important donor for Palestine. As such, it has the moral
and legal obligation to do more than that. Recognition on its own is not going
to stop the ongoing ethnic cleansing and annexation. These processes continue
unabated because countries like France fail to act and hold Israel accountable.
For example, France was one of the first European countries to grant de facto
immunity to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the International
Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against him in November. Paris has
opened its airspace on several occasions for Netanyahu to fly over on his way to
the United States in violation of its obligations under the Rome Statute, the
treaty that established the ICC. Despite growing calls for an arms embargo on
Israel, France has continued to sell weapons to the Israeli army during the
ongoing genocide. French citizens face no repercussions for engaging in
settler-colonialism in the occupied West Bank or serving in the Israeli
occupation forces, which have been repeatedly accused of committing horrific war
crimes. Likewise, France continues to tolerate the fundraising for illegal
Israeli settlements while several French companies have contributed to the
ongoing annexation process of occupied Palestinian territory. France has been
granted a special role in Jerusalem with regards to protecting the status quo
benefits of Christian denominations. However, it has hardly taken any concrete
measures to st ongoing Israeli attempts to impose illegal taxes on churches and
take over church property. If France is truly interested in being a broker of
peace in the Middle East, it needs to do more than just recognising Palestinian
statehood. It must act in accordance with its obligations under the UN Charter
and the Rome Statute. It must put real pressure on Israel to end its occupation
and colonisation of Palestinian land and take action against French citizens and
companies involved in them. It must reverse its decision to grant immunity to
Israeli officials wanted by the ICC. At the EU level, France must join Spain and
Ireland in demanding a review of the EU-Israel Association Agreement in light of
Israel’s flagrant violation of Article 2, which stipulates that relations should
be based on respect for human rights. It goes without saying that the Israeli
government opposes any recognition of Palestine and will make use of its
available tools to prevent it. It could apply pressure by mobilising domestic
opposition, coordinating with close Israeli allies, such as the United States,
and taking action against diplomats based in Jerusalem – among other tactics.
This will force France to face its moment of truth: Is it willing to stand up
for its principles, or will it succumb to Israeli blackmail? Will it lead the
way in Europe on respecting international obligations, or will it let its
recognition of Palestine remain an empty gesture? At a time when US President
Donald Trump’s administration endorses ethnic cleansing as an official policy
and the EU is at its lowest political point with regards to Palestine, France
has the opportunity to make a difference. It can join other EU members, like
Spain and Ireland, which along with the Global South are pushing for a
rules-based international order where Palestine is no longer the exception to
the norm. It can live up to its own motto of “liberté, égalité, fraternité” by
supporting the Palestinian people’s pursuit of liberty, equality and fraternity.

<<Children push carts loaded with belongings as Palestinians flee Rafah towards
Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip
The Israeli military has said it completed the construction of what it calls the
Morag Corridor, which cuts off the city of Rafah from the rest of Gaza, as it
expanded its attacks on the southern part of the Strip. The Israeli army’s
Arabic language spokesperson on Saturday issued new forced displacement orders
for several neighbourhoods in Khan Younis, warning of an imminent attack “with
great force” in response to alleged Hamas rockets fired at Israel from this
area. Residents in Qizan an-Najjar, Qizan Abu Rashwan, al-Salam, al-Manara, al-Qurain,
Maen, al-Batn al-Sameen, Jurt al-Lot, al-Fakhari and the southern neighbourhoods
of Bani Suheila were ordered to leave their homes and proceed to al-Mawasi, on
Gaza’s sea coast. The announcement came amid a barrage of drone attacks and
artillery shelling on Khan Younis that killed at least two people. Israel’s
Defence Minister Israel Katz said the Morag Corridor effectively turned Rafah
into an “Israeli security zone” and added that the Netzarim Corridor, which
divides the Strip in two, would also be expanded. “Willful passage” will be
granted for Palestinians who wish to flee Gaza, Katz said in a statement,
mentioning again US President Trump’s plan to remove Palestinians from Gaza.>>

<<At least 500 Gaza children killed since Israel broke truce: Official
More than 1,500 people killed since Israel resumed new offensive on March 18,
with UNRWA chief describing Gaza as a “post-apocalyptic” killing zone.
At least 500 Palestinian children have been killed by sustained Israeli air
attacks and bombardments in Gaza since Israel broke the ceasefire with Hamas
last month, said Mahmoud Basal, spokesperson of the Gaza Civil Defence, while a
UN official described the war-torn territory as a “post-apocalyptic” killing
zone. Meanwhile, Israeli air raids in Gaza on Saturday killed at least six
people, including a child, bringing the death toll in the last 24 hours to more
than 20. More than 1,500 people have been killed since Israel resumed its
bombardment of Gaza on March 18, according to figures from the Palestinian
Ministry of Health.
In the latest Israeli attacks on Saturday, two people were reported killed, and
two children were injured in Gaza’s Tuffah neighbourhood, while two others were
killed in al-Atatra district of Beit Lahiya, in the northern part of Gaza.
Another Palestinian was killed in an Israeli drone attack in the Qizan an-Najjar
area, south of Khan Younis. Several casualties were also reported following
Israeli air raids on the tent shelters of civilians in the al-Mawasi area, west
of Khan Younis, which Israel had designated a so-called “safe zone”.
Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary, reporting outside Al-Ahli Hospital in Deir el-Balah,
central Gaza, reported that a newborn named Sham was severely injured after the
child’s family was hit in an attack. “She was in very critical condition where
her arm was amputated and she died a couple of hours later, because her injury
was very critical and doctors were unable to help her situation,” she said. The
death brings to six the number of deaths early on Saturday. Khoudary also
reported that two forced evacuation orders were issued on Saturday in Shujayea
and Khan Younis.
