Israeli strikes on Gaza between March 18 and April 9.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has lashed out at Israel’s killing of
civilians in Gaza, saying, “If this is not barbarism, I ask you, what is it?”
Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed at least 20 people since dawn on Friday as
the territory’s Health Ministry says 1,542 were killed since Israel shattered
the ceasefire on March 18. Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 50,912
Palestinians are confirmed dead and 115,981 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. The
Government Media Office updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying
thousands of people missing under the rubble are presumed dead. At least 1,139
people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attacks and

<<UN raises alarm as Israel keeps killing mostly women, children in Gaza
UN recorded 36 Israeli air attacks between March 18 and April 9 in Gaza that
killed only women and children. The United Nations has warned that the
cumulative effect of Israel’s actions in Gaza is threatening “the future
viability of Palestinians as a group”, as the most recent predawn strike killed
at least 10 people, including seven children. Ravina Shamdasani, spokeswoman for
the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlighted on Friday “the death, the
destruction, the displacement, the denial of access to basic necessities within
Gaza and the repeated suggestion that Gazans should leave the territory
entirely”. Shamdasani pointed in particular to the dire effect of Israel’s
ongoing air attacks on civilians, lamenting that “a large percentage of
fatalities are children and women.” She told reporters that Israel had launched
about 224 raids on residential buildings and tents housing displaced people
between March 18 and April 9. “In some 36 strikes about which the UN Human
Rights Office corroborated information, the fatalities recorded so far were only
women and children,” she said. Shamdasani cited an April 6 strike on a
residential building in Deir el-Balah belonging to the Abu Issa family, which
reportedly killed one girl, four women and a four-year-old boy. Palestinians
transport the bodies people killed when an Israeli strike hit a building in Gaza
City's eastern neighbourhood of Shujaiya, in the yard of the Al-Ahli Arab
hospital in the northern Gaza Strip on April 10, 2025. In an update on April 10,
the health ministry in the Hamas-run territory said at least 1,522 Palestinians
have been killed in
the renewed Israeli offensive, taking the overall death toll since the start of
the war to 50,886. In the most recent Israeli air attack on Gaza, early dawn on
Friday in Khan Younis, at least 10 people in one family were killed, including
seven children. At least three other people were killed on Friday in other parts
of Gaza. Many people have been trapped under the rubble across Gaza, according
to Al Jazeera’s Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.
“We have heard very horrific testimonies from civil defence crews saying that
while they were rescuing Palestinians trapped under their destroyed homes, they
were hearing the sounds of babies and the sound of children crying for help and
shouting for any sort of rescue,” he said. Israel had resumed intense attacks on
the Gaza Strip on March 18, ending a two-month ceasefire with Hamas.
Since then, more than 1,500 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the
Ministry of Health in the Hamas-run territory to which Israel cut off aid more
than a month ago.
‘Nowhere safe’
Even the areas where Palestinians were being instructed to go by the expanding
number of Israeli forced displacement orders were subjected to attacks, the
rights office spokeswoman said. The raids across Gaza were “leaving nowhere
safe”, she said. As an example, Shamdasani took the Israeli army’s order for
civilians to move to the al-Mawasi area of the southern city of Khan Younis.
Despite this “strikes continued on tents in that area housing displaced people,
with at least 23 such incidents recorded by the office since 18 March,” she
said.>>

US judge rules pro-Palestine activist Mahmoud Khalil can be deported
Donald Trump’s administration is pushing to deport Khalil over his participation

Khalil can appeal the ruling.
The case has drawn widespread scrutiny as rights advocates accuse President

<<Palestinian Ahmad Manasra released from Israeli prison after nine years
Ahmad Manasra, 23, has been released after completing nine-and-a-half-year
sentence, lawyer says.
A Palestinian who was arrested at age 13 for allegedly taking part in a stabbing
attack has been released after spending more than nine years in prison, where he
developed severe mental health issues but was repeatedly denied requests for
early release. Ahmad Manasra, now 23, was released on Thursday after completing
his nine-and-a-half-year sentence, his lawyer Khaled Zabarqa said. Manasra, from
occupied East Jerusalem, was sentenced for being present with his cousin Hassan
Manasra, who stabbed two Israelis near the illegal settlement of Pisgat Ze’ev in
East Jerusalem in 2015. Hassan, who was 15 at the time, was shot dead by an
Israeli man, while Ahmad was severely beaten by a group of Israelis and run over
by an Israeli driver, suffering fractures to his skull and internal bleeding. A
graphic video of Ahmad lying in the street, bleeding from the head while
Israelis taunted him, garnered millions of views at the time. Ahmad was charged
with attempted murder even though he did not stab anyone – something that the
courts had acknowledged. Authorities first moved Manasra to isolation in
November 2021, following a scuffle with another detainee. In interviews the
following year, his family and lawyers said he was locked in a small cell for 23
hours a day and suffered from paranoia and delusions that kept him from
sleeping. His lawyer said Manasra had tried to harm himself. His family said he
was transferred to the psychiatric wing of another prison every few months,
where doctors gave him injections to stabilise him. In December 2021, an
external doctor was allowed to visit Ahmad for the first time since his
imprisonment. The doctor from Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres,
or MSF) issued a medical report stating that Ahmad suffers from schizophrenia.
He warned at the time that continued imprisonment could lead to permanent damage
to his mental health.
‘Huge relief’
Ahmad’s release comes after numerous local and international bodies, including
the European Union and the United Nations, repeatedly called for his immediate
release. Appeals to Israel’s Supreme Court for his early release were repeatedly
denied. The courts ruled that he was ineligible, regardless of age or mental
condition, because he was convicted of “terrorism”. Between Ahmad’s conviction
and sentencing, Israeli law was amended to allow civilian courts to convict
children as young as 12 for so-called “terrorist offences”. Zabarqa said that
Israeli prison authorities freed Ahmad “away from the Nafha Prison [facility] to
prevent his family from receiving him, leaving him alone in an empty area”. A
passer-by found Ahmad in the Beersheba area in the southern Negev region and
contacted his family, who reunited with him later, Zabarqa said. He confirmed
Ahmad has been reunited with his parents. “We know in jail he’s been very ill.
We’re waiting to know more about his health situation now,” Zabarqa said.
Amnesty International’s regional director Heba Morayef hailed his release,
saying it is a “huge relief for him and his family”. “Nothing can undo the years
of injustice, abuse, trauma and ill-treatment he endured behind bars,” Morayef
said in a statement on Thursday.>>

<<Netanyahu backs dismissal of Israeli reservists calling for end to Gaza war
About 1,000 current and retired Israeli Air Force pilots sign letter, saying
Gaza war only serves ‘political interests’.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denounced about 1,000 current and
retired Israeli Air Force reservists, who signed a letter calling for an end to
the war in Gaza, referring to them as “marginal and extremist”, while expressing
support for the serving pilots’ dismissal. In a statement posted on X on
Thursday, Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister “backs the decision” of the
defence minister and the Israeli military chief of staff “to dismiss those who
signed the letter”. The document, which ignited a political uproar in Israel,
urged all Israeli citizens to demand an end to the war, warning that the
bombardment of Gaza puts Israeli captives held in the enclave at risk. “As has
been proven in the past, only a [ceasefire] deal can bring back the hostages
safely, while military pressure mainly leads to the killing of the hostages and
the endangerment of our soldiers,” the soldiers said. “Currently, the war serves
mainly political and personal interests, not security interests,” the document
added.
Netanyahu said “expressions that weaken” the military “and strengthen our
enemies in wartime are unforgiveable”. “This is a marginal and extremist group
that is again trying to break Israeli society from within,” he added, accusing
them of trying to topple the government. “They already tried to do this before
October 7 and Hamas interpreted the call to refuse to serve as weakness.”
According to Israeli media, the letter does not call for a general refusal to
serve but rather urges Israeli officials to prioritise the release of captives
rather than pursuing the deadly war. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz said the
signatories include many active reservists, including senior officers and
pilots, as well as others who are no longer in active reserve duty. The report
added that after the document was leaked, military officials called the
signatories and urged them to retract, on orders from Israeli Air Force
commander Tomer Bar. Bar also threatened the reservist pilots who signed the
letter would be barred from serving, according to Israel’s public broadcaster
Kan. Haaretz said only 25 retracted their signatures while eight more signed in
protest. The newspaper later reported that Israel’s Military Chief of Staff Eyal
Zamir and the Air Force’s Bar have decided to dismiss the reservists. It is
unclear when the dismissal would take effect. Critics have accused Netanyahu of
prolonging the war in a bid to keep his cabinet intact and stay as prime
minister. Families of Israeli captives and their supporters have also been
urging Netanyahu to reach a ceasefire with Hamas and pave the way for the
captives’ release.
Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 50,846 Palestinians are confirmed dead and
115,729 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. The enclave’s Government Media Office
updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of people missing
under the rubble are presumed dead.>>

Bombed-out Gaza university becomes shelter for displaced Palestinians
Gaza’s Islamic University turns into a shelter for hundreds of displaced
families amid destruction and war.
One of the Strip’s largest universities, the Islamic University of Gaza in Gaza
City had about 17,000 students before the war, studying everything from medicine
and chemistry to literature and commerce. More than 60 percent of the students
were women. But now, any sense that the place was once a university is gone.
After 18 months of Israeli bombardment that killed more than 50,000 people in
the enclave, the main auditorium is a gutted, burned-out wreck. Giant holes have
been blasted through its blackened walls. The banks of seats are mangled and
twisted. The campus has become a refuge for hundreds of families in northern
Gaza since Israel broke a ceasefire on March 18 and relaunched the war. Families
have set up tents in lecture halls and classrooms. They take books from the
library and burn them in cooking fires because they have no fuel. Children run
around in gardens reduced to fields of debris and mounds of earth. A makeshift
market has been set up under the archway of the main gate. Their struggle to
survive has worsened because Israel has cut off the entry of food, fuel,
medicine and all other goods into Gaza for more than a month, straining the
limited supplies of aid agencies on which nearly the entire population relies.>>

<<At least 35 killed in Israeli attack on Gaza residential block
Medical sources tell Al Jazeera at least 35 killed and dozens of others wounded
in Israeli attack on Gaza City.
At least 35 people have been killed and dozens of others were wounded in an
Israeli attack on a residential block in Gaza City’s Shujayea neighbourhood,
medical sources told Al Jazeera. The Gaza Health Ministry said it expected the
death toll from Wednesday’s attack in northern Gaza to rise, as civil defence
teams and residents dug frantically to locate dozens of missing residents
believed to be trapped under the rubble.
The Israeli military said the raid targeted a senior Hamas fighter, but did not
give his name, claiming that it had taken several steps to reduce harm to
civilians. Ayub Salim, 26, a resident of Shujayea, told Al Jazeera that some
victims were “torn to pieces” by the attack with “multiple missiles” that sent
shrapnel flying. “Dust and massive destruction filled the entire place. We
couldn’t see anything, just [heard] the screams and panic of the people,” he
said. Reporting from Shujayea, Al Jazeera’s Ibrahim Al Khalili said civil
defence forces and local residents had come together to pull trapped civilians
from under the rubble. Most of the victims had come to live in the block after
being “forcibly displaced”, he said. Mahmoud Basal, a civil defence
spokesperson, said that it was very difficult to reach the “dozens of people”
trapped under the rubble as rescuers lacked the appropriate equipment as a
result of Israel’s blockade of the Palestinian territory, adding that more than
60 people were wounded. Reporting from Deir el-Balah, Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudary
said a doctor at Gaza City’s al-Ahli Arab Hospital had told her that medics
lacked the medication to treat “burned” victims. The hospital is in urgent need
of blood supplies. Paramedics, already struggling with a lack of fuel and
medical supplies, had been unable to reach people in Shujayea because of the
scale of destruction, with rubble on the roads preventing them from reaching
those in need.>>

<<Macron says France could recognise Palestinian state
‘We must move towards recognition, and we will do so in the coming months,’
French president says.
President Emmanuel Macron says France could recognise a Palestinian state “in
the coming months”. Macron told France 5 television on Wednesday that he aimed
to finalise the move at a United Nations conference on the Israel-Palestine
conflict, which his country will co-chair with Saudi Arabia in June. “We must
move towards recognition, and we will do so in the coming months,” Macron said.
“I’m not doing it to please anyone. I’ll do it because at some point it will be
right,” he said. Palestine’s minister of state for foreign affairs, Varsen
Aghabekian Shahin, told the news agency AFP that France’s recognition would be
“a step in the right direction in line with safeguarding the rights of the
Palestinian people and the two-state solution”. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon
Saar said any “unilateral recognition” of a Palestinian state would be a “boost
for Hamas”. “A ‘unilateral recognition’ of a fictional Palestinian state, by any
country, in the reality that we all know, will be a prize for terror and a boost
for Hamas,” he wrote on X. “These kind of actions will not bring peace, security
and stability in our region closer – but the opposite: they only push them
further away,” he said. Palestine has been recognised as a sovereign state by

<<Mapping which countries recognise Palestine in 2025
The State of Palestine is recognised as a sovereign nation by 147 countries,
representing 75 percent of UN members.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that France plans to
recognise a Palestinian state within months and could make the move at a United
Nations conference in New York in June aimed at resolving the
Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He added that, in turn, some Middle Eastern
countries could formally recognise the State of Israel. The Palestinian
Authority welcomed the announcement as “a step in the right direction”.
Amid Israel’s continuing war on Gaza, 10 countries – Mexico, Armenia, Slovenia,
Ireland, Norway, Spain, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados –
formally recognised the State of Palestine, reflecting growing international
support. Recognising Palestine strengthens its global standing, improves its
capacity to hold Israeli authorities accountable for the occupation, and
pressures Western powers to act on the two-state solution.
Which countries recognise Palestine?
Currently, the State of Palestine is recognised as a sovereign nation by 147 of
the 193 UN member states, representing 75 percent of the international
community. It is also recognised by the Holy See, the governing body of the
Catholic Church and Vatican City, which holds UN observer status.
These countries are listed in the map and table below:
