<<Gaza faces ‘largest orphan crisis’ in modern history, report says
Over 39,000 children have lost one or both parents in Gaza, new report by the Palestinian statistics agency says.
Tens of thousands of Palestinian children have lost their parents since the start of Israel’s war on the besieged Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics says. In a statement on Thursday, the eve of Palestinian Children’s Day, the agency said 39,384 children in Gaza have lost one or both parents after 534 days of Israel’s assault, which has ravaged the tiny enclave and displaced most of its 2.3 million strong population. The bureau said among them are about 17,000 children who have been deprived of both parents since October 2023, when Israel launched its genocidal offensive. “These children are living in tragic conditions, with many forced to take refuge in torn tents or destroyed homes, in a near-total absence of social care and psychological support,” the statement by the bureau said. “The Gaza Strip is suffering from the largest orphan crisis in modern history.” According to the statement, at least 17,954 children have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza, including 274 newborn babies and 876 infants below the age of one year.>>

<<Israel hits tents and homes in Gaza ‘with great force’
At least 1,163 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel resumed large-scale strikes on March 18.
Israeli attacks have killed dozens of Palestinians across Gaza overnight, including six members of a family. The strikes hit a displacement camp that Israel had designated as a “humanitarian” zone, and several tents housing displaced people in Khan Younis, with rescue teams rushing to the scene following the attack. At least 1,163 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel resumed large-scale strikes on March 18. According to the enclave’s Ministry of Health, the figure includes nearly 100 people killed in the past 24 hours, while three additional bodies, killed in earlier strikes, were recovered in that period, taking the overall death toll to 50,423 since the war began on October 7, 2023. A spokesperson from the Israeli army ordered residents of the Shujayea area and the neighbourhoods of al-Jadida, al-Turkman, Tasbeeh and eastern Zeitoun to leave their homes. The Israeli army “is operating with great force in your areas to destroy the terrorist infrastructure,” Avichay Adraee said on X. “You must evacuate these areas immediately and move to the known shelters in western Gaza City,” he said.>>

At least 26 Palestinians have been killed in a flurry of Israeli attacks on Khan Younis this morning, with strikes hitting a displacement camp that Israel has designated as a “humanitarian” zone, and several homes. Hungary announced it will withdraw from the International Criminal Court, which has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli PM Netanyahu, as he continues his visit to the European Union country. Israel’s military has confirmed carrying out new attacks on Syria’s Damascus, Hama and Homs governorates. Local authorities say nine people were killed. Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 50,523 Palestinians are confirmed dead and 114,638 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza. The Government Media Office updated its death toll to more than 61,700, saying thousands of people missing under the rubble are presumed dead. <<Hungary says it will withdraw from ICC as Israel’s Netanyahu visits
Hungarian PM Viktor Orban had raised the prospect of exit from the ICC after US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the court.
Hungary’s government has announced its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), just before Prime Minister Viktor Orban received his Israeli counterpart, Benjamin Netanyahu, the subject of an ICC arrest warrant. “Hungary exits the International Criminal Court. The government will initiate the withdrawal procedure on Thursday, in accordance with the constitutional and international legal framework,” Orban’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyas, posted on Facebook on Thursday. Orban had raised the prospect of the country’s exit from the ICC after United States President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on the court’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, in February. “It’s time for Hungary to review what we’re doing in an international organisation that is under US sanctions,” Orban said on X in February. The withdrawal bill is likely to be approved by Hungary’s parliament, which is dominated by Orban’s Fidesz party. The ICC has not yet commented on Hungary’s announcement. A state’s withdrawal from the court also takes effect only one year after the deposit of the withdrawal’s instrument – usually in the form of a formal letter declaring the pullout – with the United Nations secretary-general’s office. So far, only Burundi and the Philippines have withdrawn from the court. <<Tensions flare over pro-Palestine activism in PM Starmer’s UK constituency
Protesters in two London boroughs recently launched a divestment campaign. One group achieved its goal. London, United Kingdom – Outraged by the onslaught on Palestinians in Gaza, a group of volunteers in the fashionable London borough of Camden urged the local council last year to stop investing in companies with ties to Israel. The petition, led by the Camden Friends of Palestine group and signed by more than 4,200 residents, was an act of grassroots activism in one of the most symbolic constituencies in the country.
During last year’s general election, Keir Starmer, the British prime minister, held onto his seat of Holborn and St Pancras, a Labour Party stronghold which includes most of Camden. Ultimately, the petition to divest the council’s pension funds failed to achieve its goal. After a debate, the council referred the issue of “responsible investment” to a so-called Pension Committee, according to minutes of the meeting. Weeks ago, tensions flared further, as the council moved to ban banners, placards, signs, and flags in council meetings – a measure understood to be aimed at taming the local pro-Palestine movement since posters reading phrases such as “Stop Genocide” have previously been raised at the Town Hall>>

<<US judge rejects Trump team’s bid to move Mahmoud Khalil case to Louisiana
Ruling is seen as a win for Khalil but does not guarantee he will be moved out of the detention facility in the southern state of Louisiana. A United States federal court judge has ruled in favour of pro-Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, allowing him to challenge the legality of his arrest in New Jersey rather than in Louisiana, where he is being held at a detention facility without charges. The decision by US District Judge Michael Farbiarz on Tuesday marked the second time the President Donald Trump administration’s legal team was unsuccessful in moving the Columbia University student’s case over to the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Louisiana – the country’s most conservative appeals court – to get Khalil deported.
Khalil’s lawyer, Baher Azmy, said his team was grateful the court understood the government’s “transparent attempt” to manipulate the jurisdiction of US courts to shield their “unconstitutional” and “chilling” behaviour. Dr Noor Abdalla, Khalil’s pregnant wife who is a US citizen, said she was relieved by the decision but that “there is still a lot more to be done”, to release Khalil, whose green card was revoked by US authorities. Although Tuesday’s case was a win for Khalil, it only settled the jurisdictional dispute of which court would be able to hear his attempts to challenge the legality of the Trump administration’s efforts to deport him – a dispute that originated when Khalil was held in a New Jersey detention facility for several hours following his arrest in Manhattan on March 8, before being moved across state lines to Louisiana. Khalil’s case is seen as a test of Trump’s efforts to deport pro-Palestinian activists who have not been charged with any crime. The Trump administration said it has revoked the visas of hundreds of foreign students it says took part in demonstrations that swept college campuses across the US, protesting against the government’s military support for Israel’s war on Gaza. Lawyers say the Trump administration has improperly targeted people for holding particular political views.
Khalil’s lawyers have also asked Judge Farbiarz to release their client from detention in Louisiana as efforts to deport him in a separate case before an immigration court play out and, in part, to allow him to be with his wife for the birth of their son. A doctor’s letter filed in court estimates that the baby is due on April 28.>>

<<How did Israel kill the Red Crescent medics in Gaza?
Israeli troops fired on several rescue vehicles, then buried the killed first responders and their vehicles. Nine Palestine Red Crescent (PRCS) medics in ambulances, as well as some Civil Defence workers, went to help people in Rafah, Gaza, and disappeared on March 23 after coming under attack from Israeli forces. What followed was a week of Israeli obstruction until international teams were finally able to enter the area where the medics and rescue workers disappeared. They found gruesome proof of direct attacks on the humanitarian workers. One medic remains missing.
Here’s everything we know about how Israel killed these first responders in Gaza:
What happened to the Red Crescent medics in Gaza?
Israeli forces killed them.
One ambulance was dispatched to al-Hashaashin, Rafah, to help people injured by Israeli attacks on Sunday, March 23. Israeli soldiers fired on it, injuring the crew. “In the early hours of Sunday, 23 March, our Palestine Red Crescent colleagues were entering the area of al-Hashaashin, Rafah to save lives and came under fire,” Tommaso Della Longa, spokesperson for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), told Al Jazeera. The PRCS then sent a further three ambulances to help the injured people their colleagues were trying to reach, and to rescue their colleagues who had been attacked. All the teams dispatched to support the initial ambulance did so during daylight hours, the Civil Defence confirmed. PRCS “lost contact with their colleagues”, Della Longa said, and began trying to find them.>>
