<<104 journalists killed worldwide in 2024
As of 10 December 2024, 104 journalists had been killed worldwide, more
than half of them in Gaza, said the annual report of the International
Federation of Journalists (IFJ).
News Center-The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has
published the initial findings of its 2024 annual report on journalists
and media workers killed in the line of duty to mark International Human
Rights Day on 10 December. As of 10 December 2024, 104 journalists,
including 12 women, had been killed worldwide, more than half of them in
Gaza, Palestine (55), according to the initial annual report of the IFJ.
"By 2023, the IFJ had documented 129 deaths, including 14 women, one of
the deadliest years for journalists since the IFJ began publishing its
list of journalists killed in 1990," the IFJ said. "2024 was another
particularly deadly year for journalists and media professionals." The
war in Gaza and Lebanon once again highlights the massacre suffered by
Palestinian (55), Lebanese (6) and Syrian (1) media professionals,
representing 60% of all journalists killed in 2024. Since the start of
the war on October 7, 2023, the number of Palestinian journalists killed
has risen to at least 138, making this country one of the most dangerous
in the history of modern journalism, behind Iraq, the Philippines and
Mexico. "These sad figures show once again how fragile is press freedom
and how risky and dangerous is the profession of journalism," said IFJ
General Secretary Anthony Bellanger. "The public's need for information
is very real at a time when authoritarian regimes are developing all
over the world. Greater vigilance on the part of our profession is
required. We urge the Member States of the United Nations to take action
to ensure the adoption of a binding convention on the safety of
journalists, so as to put an end to the deaths and injuries that occur
every year." >>

<<Deadly Israeli air strikes target Nuseirat camp in Gaza
Attack comes hours after 20 people from the same displaced family were
killed in northern Gaza.
At least seven people have been killed and many wounded by an Israeli
air attack on a house in central Gaza's Nuseirat camp. The house was
targeted on Tuesday morning, the Palestinian Civil Defence said in a
statement, adding that its teams recovered seven bodies and rescued a
number of wounded people from the site of the attack. Anadolu Agency
quoted a medical source at al-Awda Hospital as saying that the victims
included a woman and three children. The report added that the Israeli
strikes severely damaged surrounding buildings as well. Meanwhile, Quds
News Network reported that Palestinian footballer Mohamed Khalifa was
among the victims of the attack. Medical sources have told Al Jazeera
that at least 13 people were killed in the coastal enclave today. On
Monday night, one Palestinian was killed and many were wounded by an
Israeli air strike that targeted the home of the Meqdad family in Sheikh
Radwan neighbourhood, north of Gaza City. In addition, nearly two dozen
people were killed on Monday evening in an attack on a building
sheltering displaced people in northern Gaza. "Twenty people from one
displaced family from Beit Lahiya and Jabalia, who were making their way
to Beit Hanoon city, were killed," Al Jazeera's Hani Mahmoud, reporting
from Deir el-Balah, said. "That includes men, women, children, as well
as elderly Palestinians." Footage shared on social media, and verified
by Al Jazeera, shows residents on Tuesday collecting the bodies and
lining them up on the street. In central Gaza's Deir el-Balah, Israeli
naval forces detained six Palestinian fishermen who tried to sail into
the Mediterranean Sea earlier on Tuesday, Reuters news agency reported.
Since early October, Israeli forces have laid a deadly siege in areas in
northern Gaza, including Jabalia and Beit Lahiya. Israel's war on Gaza
has killed at least 44,758 Palestinians and wounded 105,834 since
October 7, 2023.
Netanyahu promises to continue war on Gaza
Meanwhile, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would not
stop the war in Gaza <now>, despite reports of renewed efforts towards
talks on a ceasefire. Speaking at a news conference in Jerusalem,
Netanyahu said <if we end the war now, Hamas will return, recover,
rebuild and attack us again>.
Last month, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for
Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and
crimes against humanity in Gaza. On Tuesday, Netanyahu was at a court in
Tel Aviv to take the stand for the first time in a long-running
corruption trial, adding to his legal woes. Charged with bribery, fraud
and breach of trust, Netanyahu will testify three times a week, the
court said. Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 in three cases involving
gifts from millionaire friends and for allegedly seeking regulatory
favours for media tycoons in return for favourable coverage. A few dozen
protesters gathered outside the court building, some of them supporters
and others demanding he do more to negotiate the release of some 100
captives still held by Hamas in Gaza.>>

<<Food insecurity, price hikes deteriorating living conditions in Gaza
The displaced people of Gaza, who endure difficult living conditions in
shelter centers have no access to basic needs such as food, water,
nappies and formula.
Gaza- Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip have displaced millions. The
displaced people of Gaza living in shelter centers face many challenges,
especially the lack of food and water. "Women and children suffer most
in war," said Palestinian activist Afaf Mehdi. "Before the famine in the
south, women collected large amounts of pulses and conserved vegetables
for consumption in times of crisis; however, they ran out within a
month. Some types of food are available in markets but they are too
expensive to buy."
They wait in lines for hours to get a meal
Pointing to the rise in flour prices, she said, "The price of a 25 kg
flour bag was two dollars but it is now 100 dollars. People generally
consume lentils. Charities deliver free meals. People wait in lines for
hours to get a meal. Women endure all the difficulties to get a meal for
their children. They face the same difficulties at the bakeries in the
Gaza Strip."
Thousands of babies are malnourished
Palestinian women face more difficult living conditions in winter, Afaf
Mehdi emphasized, adding: "The displaced people face another winter
without clothes and blankets. Thousands of babies are malnourished due
to the lack of formula. Thousands of babies are at the risk of dying
from malnutrition. For a long time, mothers have not been able to find
nappies for their children." The people in the southern and northern
Gaza Strip tried to boycott the products sold by merchants at high
prices in local markets. However, they failed because they need these
products to survive." >>

<<Houthis claim attack on central Israel in response to Gaza 'massacres'
The Yemeni group says it will continue its 'support operations' until
Israel ends its war and siege on the Gaza Strip. Yemen's Houthi group
says it has carried out a drone attack in central Israel's Tel Aviv area
in "a specific military operation" in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
The Houthis said in a statement on Monday that their forces struck "a
sensitive target of the Israeli enemy". An Israeli military statement
said a drone hit a building in the city of Yavne after air defence
systems failed to detect it and an investigation into the failure is
under way. The Houthis said the operation "achieved its objective"
without providing details. No injuries were reported in the attack,
which caused damage to several apartments in the building, according to
Israeli media reports. The Houthis said the attack was in response to
Israel's "massacres" against Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip,
where Israel has been waging a devastating assault for more than a year.
The Houthis - who control large areas of Yemen, including the capital,
Sanaa, and present themselves as the country’s official armed forces -
pledged to continue their attacks on Israel until the end of the war on
Gaza. "The Yemeni Armed Forces confirm that they will confront any
Israeli aggression against our country with more specific military
operations and that their support operations for the Palestinian people
will not stop until the aggression stops and the siege on the Gaza Strip
is lifted," the group said in a statement. The Houthis have been
carrying out attacks on shipping lanes in and around the Red Sea in a
campaign that they said aims to pressure Israel to end its assault on
Gaza. The Iran-allied Yemeni group has also launched missiles and drones
directly at Israel over the past year.
The United States is leading a military coalition that has been bombing
Houthi targets in Yemen. Israel has also carried out air strikes against
areas under the control of the group. But these efforts have failed to
stop the Houthi attacks. Monday's drone strike suggests that the Houthis
are continuing their attacks on Israel even after a ceasefire in Lebanon
came into effect on November 27, putting an end to another Gaza "support
front" by Iran-allied Hezbollah. The Houthis and Hezbollah are both part
of the Tehran-led <Axis of Resistance>. Hezbollah began launching
strikes at Israel in October 2023 in a push that it said aimed to end
the war on Gaza. But under the terms of the truce that followed more
than 62 days of intense Israeli bombardment of Lebanon, Hezbollah and
Israel agreed to cease their attacks. The deal also says Hezbollah must
withdraw its forces to the north of the Litani River, about 30km (20
miles) north of the Israeli border, and dismantle its military
infrastructure in southern Lebanon. In Gaza, Israel's assault has killed
more than 44,700 people, many of whom are women and children. The
offensive has also wiped out large parts of the territory and displaced
nearly its entire population. More than 100,000 people have been
wounded, according to health authorities in the besieged enclave.
United Nations experts and rights groups, including Amnesty
International, have accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza.>>

<<Israel strikes flour distribution line, kills 50 across Gaza
Palestinian death toll in besieged Gaza Strip rises to 44,758 amid
relentless Israeli attacks, health authorities say.
Palestinians carry the covered bodies of the Hirzallah family members,
killed in an Israeli airstrike, at Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir Al
Balah, central Gaza Strip, 08 December 2024. According to the
Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, the family was killed in an
Israeli airstrike in the southwest of Deir Al Balah town in the central
Gaza Strip. More than 45,000 Palestinians and over 1,400 Israelis have
been killed, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry and the
Israeli Army, since Hamas militants launched an attack against Israel
from the Gaza Strip on 07 October 2023 and the Israeli operations in
Gaza and the West Bank that followed it. Dozens of Palestinians -
including women and children - have been killed in Israeli attacks in
Gaza, health authorities say, as a power outage threatens the lives of
more than 100 patients at a hospital in the besieged territory's north.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said on Monday that 50 people were killed the
previous day and 84 others were injured as Israeli forces committed
three "massacres" in the territory. An Israeli drone attack in the
Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza on Monday morning killed three
people, sources told Al Jazeera. "[The victims] were trying to leave
their home in search of food in the vicinity of their neighbourhood when
they were targeted by a drone," said Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud,
reporting from central Deir el-Balah in Gaza. "They were killed right
away. Their bodies are still in the street and nobody has the ability to
get to the bombed site and remove the bodies from the street." Jabalia
has been under Israeli siege for 65 days, with thousands of Palestinians
being denied access to food and water supplies, leaving many starving. "Jabalia
has been turned into a graveyard," Mahmoud said. Overnight, an Israeli
attack in the southern city of Rafah also killed 10 people while they
had lined up to buy flour. Mahmoud said because of the limited delivery
of humanitarian aid going through the southern border, scenes of hunger
similar to northern Gaza were also happening in the south. In central
Gaza, where our correspondent is reporting from outside Al-Aqsa
Hospital, bodies were also piling up at the medical facility's morgue
following the latest Israeli bombing of a residential building in the
Bureij refugee camp. At least nine members of one family, most of them
women and children, were killed in the attack, Mahmoud said. "The agony
keeps on unfolding here at Al-Aqsa Hospital, where survivors and
relatives showed up early this morning to collect the bodies from the
morgue of the hospital," he said. "At some point, the morgue of the
hospital was packed with the bodies and there was not enough room for
more bodies."
'Extremely dangerous'
Meanwhile, in northern Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital, the head of the
facility, Hussam Abu Safia, said the lives of more than 100 patients
were in danger after electricity, oxygen and water supplies were cut.
Abu Safia said recent Israeli shelling and bombing had severely damaged
the hospital and cut the water and electricity supply to parts of it.
"The situation is extremely dangerous. We have patients in the intensive
care unit and others awaiting surgeries. Access to the operating rooms
is only possible after restoring electricity and oxygen supply," he
said. Abu Safia added that the hospital currently had 112 wounded
patients, including six in intensive care and 14 children. Continued
shelling near the hospital was "preventing us from conducting repairs",
he said. Israel on Friday said it was operating around the facility but
had not fired directly on the hospital in Beit Lahiya, which is near the
besieged Jabalia refugee camp. The hospital is one of the last
operational medical facilities in the north of the territory. On Friday,
an Israeli attack killed four of its staff. Israel's offensive has
killed at least 44,758 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip since the start of
the war, according to local health authorities; most of the victims are
women and children.>>

<<Israeli attacks on central Gaza kill at least 16
Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed 44,708 people as Israeli forces
continue their siege of Kamal Adwan Hospital. Israeli air attacks in the
Gaza Strip have killed at least 16 Palestinians in separate attacks in
the central part of the enclave. Five members of one family, including
children, were killed in an attack on a camp for displaced people in
Deir el-Balah in the early hours of Sunday as they slept. "We woke up to
a loud explosion in the middle of the night," said Mahmoud Fayad, an
eyewitness. "We ran to the loud screams and found many civilians killed;
and entire family, man, wife and their children." Dozens of others were
injured in the attack, according to Al Jazeera's Hani Mahmoud. "Many
people in the vicinity of the tent site were reported with various
injuries," said Mahmoud, reporting from Deir el-Balah. "The overnight
attack highlights the vulnerability of displaced civilians inside these
tents." Then, later on Sunday, at least 11 people were killed in an
Israeli air attack on a residential house in al-Bureij camp.
Al Jazeera's Tareq Abu Azzoum, reporting from Deir el-Balah, said that
the strike had hit the eastern part of the camp, and that there had been
no prior warning to the residents of the building, which was flattened.
Abu Azzoum said that he "personally saw bodies... shredded to pieces" as
they arrived at Deir el-Balah's al-Aqsa Hospital, adding that they had
been gathered in bags used for flour because of a lack of coffins.
Gaza's Health Ministry said on Sunday that more than 44,708 Palestinians
have been killed and 106,050 injured in Israel's war on Gaza since
October of last year. Several people were injured overnight in "drone
attacks on residential areas" to the east of Gaza City, Mahmoud
reported. Meanwhile, Israel's siege of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Beit
Lahiya in northern Gaza is continuing, with Palestinian health officials
reporting on Sunday that Israeli forces had shelled the hospital,
damaging electricity and oxygen pumps and disrupting urgent surgeries.
Hussam Abu Safia, the director of the hospital, which is one of only
three barely operational in the north of the enclave, said the facility
was hit by around 100 tank shells and bombs, wounding several of the
medical staff and patients. "The situation is extremely dangerous. We
have patients in the intensive care unit and others awaiting surgeries.
Access to the operating rooms is only possible after restoring
electricity and oxygen supply," Abu Safia said in a statement. "The
hospital is treating 112 wounded people, including six in the intensive
care unit," he said. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli
military about Abu Safia's account. "Israeli forces are about 500 metres
[1,650 feet] away from the gate of the hospital and set up a sniper
position that keeps targeting people and any moving objects inside the
hospital," Al Jazeera's Mahmoud reported, adding that there was a heavy
presence of drones and quadcopters in the skies above the facility. On
Friday, Israeli forces killed about 30 people when they stormed the
Kamal Adwan Hospital under cover of heavy artillery fire and air
attacks, according to Eid Sabbah, the hospital's director of nursing. To
justify its actions, Israel claims Hamas fighters are using civilian
buildings, including hospitals and schools, for operational cover
throughout the 14-month Gaza war.
Hamas, the Palestinian group that runs the Gaza Strip, has denied this
and accuses Israel of indiscriminate bombings and assaults.>>

<<Qatar says 'momentum' building back up in Gaza ceasefire efforts
A month after suspending its mediation bid, Qatar has said it sees
"momentum" in efforts to reach a deal to end Israel’s war on the Gaza
Strip, as dozens of Palestinians were killed in the Israeli military’s
continued attacks on the besieged enclave. Speaking at the Doha Forum on
Saturday, Qatari Foreign Minister and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin
Abdulrahman Al Thani said the country took a step back from mediating
Gaza ceasefire talks because it failed to see "a real willingness" to
end the war. But the minister said that after the United States
presidential election on November 5, Qatar has sensed "that the momentum
is coming back". "We have seen a lot of encouragement from the incoming
administration [of US President-elect Donald Trump] in order to achieve
a deal even before the president comes [into] office" in January, Al
Thani said. "And that actually made us [try] ... to put it back on
track. We've been engaging in the past couple of weeks," he added.
Efforts to end Israel's war on Gaza, which has killed more than 44,600
Palestinians since early October 2023, have foundered, with critics
accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of stymying the
negotiations. The administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden,
which has repeatedly said it is pushing for an end to the fighting in
Gaza but refuses to condition US aid to Israel, also has faced criticism
for failing to secure a ceasefire. The US provides Israel with at least
$3.8bn in military aid annually, and the Biden administration has
authorised $14bn in further assistance to its ally since the war began
last year. Trump - who, like Biden, is a staunch supporter of Israel –
this week warned that <there will be hell to pay> if captives held in
Gaza are not released by the time he enters the White House on January
20. <Those responsible will be hit harder than anybody has been hit in
the long and storied History of the United States of America. RELEASE
THE HOSTAGES NOW!> he wrote on social media.
Dozens killed across Gaza
Meanwhile, medical sources in Gaza told Al Jazeera Arabic on Saturday
that 39 Palestinians were killed since dawn in Israeli attacks across
the bombarded territory, including a strike in the Nuseirat refugee camp
that killed at least 26 people. Reporting from Deir el-Balah in central
Gaza, Al Jazeera's Tareq Abu Azzoum said the attack on the refugee camp
targeted a building in a densely populated area housing displaced
families.
"People have been buried under tonnes of debris,” said Abu Azzoum,
adding that rescuers and residents were still searching through the
rubble for possible survivors as well as bodies that can be taken for
burial. The Israeli military also has laid siege to Kamal Adwan Hospital
in northern Gaza's Beit Lahiya, as well as the surrounding area. Footage
verified by Al Jazeera's Sanad fact-checking agency showed Israeli
forces firing on a Palestine Red Crescent Society ambulance near the
hospital. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, head of the World Health
Organization (WHO), said an international medical team "was forced to
self-evacuate" amid the deteriorating security situation at Kamal Adwan
Hospital. He said in a social media post on Saturday that "displaced
people, caregivers, and many injured patients began fleeing the hospital
and panic spread" but that 90 patients and 66 medical staff remained at
the facility. "Kamal Adwan is minimally functional, but this latest
incident further threatens its ability to remain operational. It is one
of the last lifelines for the people of northern Gaza. We urgently call
for the immediate protection of healthcare facilities and an end to the
hostilities!" he wrote. Back in Doha, the Qatari prime minister said the
Gulf country was working to protect the negotiation process "to make
sure that we can achieve a meaningful result". "We hope to get things
done as soon as possible. We hope that the willingness of the parties to
engage in good faith continues in the same manner," Al Thani said. "It's
all about the main questions: Is there a willingness to end the war? Yes
or no. Is there a willingness to have an exchange deal? Yes or no," he
added.
"Those are two very simple questions with very simple answers. If the
answers are yes on both questions then we have a deal." >>
