Jalil Rakhshani
Iranwire - September 20 , 2024 - by Roghayeh Rezaei, Fariba Baluch
'He Died in His Sister's Arms': Two Years Later, Jalil Rakhshani's
Family Still Awaits Justice
Jalil Rakhshani, a 25-year-old man, was killed on September 30, 2022,
after Friday prayers near the Zahedan mosque. He was on the roof of his
home, observing the situation, when a sniper's bullet struck him in the
heart, ending his life. A source close to Jalil's family told IranWire
that he was a young man with modest means, engaged to be married. Only
after his death did his family discover that he had been quietly
supporting several impoverished families in the villages surrounding
Zahedan. According to the source, Jalil's family remains devastated.
Although they filed a complaint against those responsible for their
son's murder shortly after his death, they have yet to receive any
response, even two years later. Like many other families of victims of
the crackdown on the 2022 protests, the Rakhshani family was offered
financial compensation in exchange for dropping the complaint. However,
they refused the offer. On the second anniversary of the nationwide
protests in Iran that sparked the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of
the notorious Morality Police, IranWire continues to document the
victims, the legal battles of their families, and what has transpired
since their loss. Sistan and Baluchistan Province was also engulfed in
protests, like other cities in Iran during the uprising. Baluch citizens
were outraged by the lack of judicial action regarding the rape by a
police colonel, Ebrahim Kochakzehi, of a 15-year-old girl from Chabahar,
Maho Baluch. When Molavi Abdulhamid, Iran's top Sunni cleric, confirmed
it, large crowds gathered for Friday prayers. Eyewitnesses reported that
military and security forces opened fire on worshipers from the guard
towers. Simultaneously, in the streets surrounding the Makki Mosque,
especially near Zahedan's Police Station 16, more protesters were shot,
including passersby and residents. Among them was 60-year-old Sangin
Ismailzehi, who, while holding her one-and-a-half-year-old grandson, was
struck by a bullet just steps outside her home. She succumbed to her
injuries. Initial reports from Baluchistan human rights organizations
indicated dozens of deaths, a toll that increased as many of the wounded
succumbed to their injuries. Many of the victims of "Bloody Friday" were
citizens with no IDs.
One of the first confirmed victims of Zahedan's Bloody Friday was Jalil
Rakhshani. Jalil, born on March 22, 1997, was a calm and kind young man.
A source told IranWire: "He focused on his work and his life, and his
laughter never left his lips." According to the source, Jalil dropped
out of school after the eighth grade, but soon found success in work,
opening a yarn shop on Khayyam Street in Zahedan, near the Makki Mosque.
On Bloody Friday, many citizens were shot in the streets and alleys near
this location. Although Jalil's family was devastated by his loss, they
chose to keep his shop open, now run by his nephew: "His family didn't
want his shop to be closed." The shop had been a symbol of Jalil's
generosity, as he used its income to support several impoverished
families in the villages around Zahedan. His acts of charity remained
unknown even to his closest family and fiancée until after his death.
Only then did they learn how every Friday he would deliver essential
supplies to these families. The source continues: "Jalil worked hard and
had many dreams for his future. He was engaged, and the regret of not
seeing his wedding weighs heavily on his parents' hearts."
Jalil was the youngest of nine children in a large family.
Speaking about the family's grief, the source says, "His mother's
condition has been terrible. Even two years later, she cries every day.
She is completely broken and hasn't truly laughed since. His father's
health has deteriorated, and his spirit was shattered on that day - the
first time I ever saw Mr. Rakhshani cry."
The source adds, "In a way, the whole family died with Jalil."
Zahedan's Bloody Friday Noon: The Bullet That Took Jalil's Life
On Friday, September 30, 2022, Jalil, like hundreds of others, attended
Friday prayers led by Molavi Abdulhamid at the Makki Mosque in Zahedan.
After prayers, he headed home through streets that were being showered
with gunfire. According to a family friend, when Jalil arrived home, he
saw his mother in the yard, crying amidst the chaos and the sounds of
bullets outside. "His mother had no idea that in just moments, her own
son would be unjustly killed," the source says. "Bullets were raining
from all directions, and it felt like doomsday in the streets around the
Makki Mosque." The source adds: "Jalil asked his nephew where his father
was, and the boy replied that he was on the rooftop. Jalil went up to
join him." Suddenly, they heard the voice of Jalil's older brother from
the roof, shouting his name: "He was calling for him 'Jalil jan' - and
the whole family rushed upstairs, terrified, only to find Jalil lying
there, shot and bleeding heavily." Jalil was carried down from the
rooftop and died in his sister's arms.
The fatal shot was fired by a sniper stationed in one of the nearby
government buildings on Khayyam Street. There are several government
offices in the area, including the Department of Housing and Urban
Development, near Jalil's family home on Khayyam Alley 3. While it is
unclear which building the shot came from, witnesses say the bullet
struck Jalil on the right side of his chest, puncturing his lung and
heart.
The Obstacles to Justice: Blood Money or Silence
Jalil Rakhshani's grave lies not far from that of Khodanur Lojei a
symbol of the 2022 protests, in a cemetery. On his gravestone, these
lines are inscribed:
"Father, don't be sad. Mother, don't cry. Your son is happy, he is
awake, a martyr who will never die."
A source told IranWire that Jalil's mother and brother filed a complaint
with the judicial system soon after his death. But nearly two years
later, they have received no response. The government's version of the
events from September 30, 2022, claims that the killings were caused by
<armed criminals and anti-government groups.> The source says, "They
blamed it on armed assailants, saying they fired first. But they’re
lying. That's why they offered blood money. Jalil's family refused. For
them, the idea of accepting blood money was torture. Imagine - their son
was killed, his dreams, including his wedding, were destroyed, and now
they are told to take money in exchange for silence. Jalil's family said
no. They want justice. They will not remain silent."
The government's offer of blood money to the families of those killed on
Zahedan and Khash's Bloody Fridays has made headlines before. As the
first anniversary of the Woman, Life, Freedom movement and the Zahedan
and Khash killings, reports emerged of pressure on these families - most
of whom belong to low-income sections of Baluch society - to accept
blood money in exchange for their silence. However, despite financial
hardships, many families, including Jalil’s, have rejected the
government’s offer. According to the source, they hold a common stance:
"We want the world to remember Zahedan and Khash's Bloody Fridays. We
will neither forgive nor forget as long as we live." >>
