36th week hungerstrike
NCRI - Womens committee - 1 Oct 2024 - in Women's News
<<The 36th Week of Hunger Strike in the "Tuesdays Against Executions"
Campaign
On Tuesday, October 1, 2024, the 36th week of hunger strike in the
"Tuesdays Against Executions" campaign took place in 22 prisons across
Iran. With Arak Prison joining the campaign, the number of participating
prisons has now reached 22. Among those taking part are women wards of
Evin and Lakan Prison of Rasht, along with several other female
political prisoners throughout the country.
In a statement by the striking prisoners, it was revealed that in the
past 10 days alone, the regime has executed 23 people. On Monday,
September 30, two individuals were publicly hanged in the city of
Khomeyn. Between September 14th and September 25th, the authorities
executed 20 people in Shiraz prison alone. None of these figures have
been reported by state media. The prisoners paid tribute to the victims
of the "Bloody Friday" massacre in Zahedan, where the regime brutally
murdered at least 120 worshippers and protesters at the Makki Mosque.
The "Tuesdays Against Executions" campaign strongly condemned these
atrocities and affirmed its unwavering solidarity with the grieving
mothers and families, continuing to stand firm in their resistance. The
statement also emphasizes that regardless of the charges behind the
executions, the primary goal is suppression and maintaining a climate of
fear. Given the regime's increasing international crises and its
inability to resolve them externally, it has resorted to the easiest
form of retaliation—carrying out more executions, particularly targeting
prisoners and those already on death row. The prisoners warn that in the
coming weeks, there is a high likelihood of even more executions due to
these pressures. They express deep concern for those currently awaiting
execution, noting that these individuals are often the first targets
when the regime seeks to cover up its domestic and international
failures.
In recent weeks, the regime has sentenced several political prisoners to
death, including Mehdi Hassani, Behrooz Ehsani, and Mojtaba Vafaee Sani,
supporters of the opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
Another political prisoner, Hatem Oudzmir, has also received a death
sentence. Additionally, two female political prisoners, Pakhshan Azizi
and Sharifeh Mohammadi, are among those facing the death penalty.
The striking prisoners called on all independent and freedom-loving
human rights activists, both inside and outside of Iran, to raise their
voices for those condemned to execution.>>

NCRI - Womens committee - 30 Sept 2024 - in Women's News
<<Crisis of Nurse Resignations in Iran: 1,590 Resigned Last Year
Salman Es'haghi, spokesperson for the Health Committee of the mullahs’
Parliament in Iran, reported that last year, 1,590 nurses resigned from
their jobs. This number indicates that resignations are significantly
outpacing the migration of nurses abroad. The rate of resignations among
nurses is estimated to be two to three times higher than the rate of
emigration.
Thousands migrate despite severe nurse shortages
Es'haghi stated that on Sunday, September 29, 2024, the parliamentary
Health and Treatment Committee heard the officials of the Nursing System
Organization. According to their report, as shared by the organization’s
president, around 2,000 nurses apply to leave the country each year, and
currently, 2,000 Iranian nurses are working in Denmark. With only
300,000 nurses, Iran faces a severe shortage in this critical field.
Officials had previously announced that 3,000 nurses leave the country
every year.
The president of the Nursing System Organization also highlighted that
in some provinces, there is only one nurse for every 8 to 9 newborns. If
the government continues to neglect this issue, the nursing shortage
will escalate into a full-blown crisis, he said.
Violations of the law
Es'haghi acknowledged that forcing nurses to work overtime is a
violation of the ruling by the Administrative Justice Court. He further
explained that officials are calling for an increase in overtime pay,
the issuance of permits to hire and recruit more nurses, and the
regularization of contract nurses, particularly those on short-term
contracts of 89 days or less. Despite the urgent need for additional
nursing staff, many of the nurses who worked tirelessly during the
COVID-19 pandemic under temporary contracts have not been offered
permanent positions. According to labor regulations, those in difficult
and hazardous jobs, such as nursing, are entitled to retirement benefits
after 25 years of service. Unfortunately, nurses have yet to benefit
from these legal protections.
No salary increases for nurses
Additionally, while the parliament has passed salary adjustments for
public employees, these increases have not been applied to the nursing
sector.
Es'haghi noted that in today’s meeting, it was revealed that 1,590
nurses resigned in 2023, with resignations and job departures occurring
two to three times more frequently than migrations. Nurses are
considered the backbone of the healthcare system, and in Iran, 70% of
them are women. Dozens of nurses have tragically lost their lives due to
excessive overtime, work pressure, and extreme fatigue. Harsh working
conditions, low wages, and mandatory overtime have prompted nurses to
stage protests across the country over the past few months. The
government's inaction in addressing nurses’ demands, along with the
exploitation of nurses through privatization and temporary contracts
that lack essential benefits like insurance, has led to a sharp increase
in the emigration of nurses from Iran.>>

<<Zeynab Jalalian denied family contact and treatment
Zeynab Jalalian, a Kurdish political prisoner who has been imprisoned in
Iran for 17 years, has been denied treatment and family contact in Yazd

informed that family visits were prohibited upon the instructions of the
ministry, according to the Kurdistan Human Rights Network (KHRN). Her
family went to Yazd from Maku to see her; however, they returned without
seeing her.
She suffers from health problems
Zeynab Jalalian has been denied medical treatment although she suffers
from several health problems, including oral thrush, pterygium (eye
condition), asthma, and kidney and gastrointestinal problems. On
September 25, she was transferred to Farrokhi hospital in Yazd when her
health deteriorated. Despite all her objections, she was handcuffed and
forced to undergo a tomography scan by prison authorities. In March
2008, Zeynab Jalalian was arrested in the city of Kermanshah and
transferred to the detention center of the Intelligence Ministry in
Kermanshah, where she spent more than three months in solitary
confinement. In the detention center, she was subjected to severe
torture and even threatened with rape, while being denied contact with
her family and access to a lawyer. In December 2008, she was sentenced
to death by the Court of First Instance. In November 2009, her death

Anisha Assadollahi , a labor activist currently serving her sentence in

months.
Since July of this year, she has been barred from seeing her family and
her husband, Keyvan Mohtadi, due to her protests against the death
Sharifeh Mohammadi and Pakhshan Azizi
sentences issued against Sharifeh Mohammadi and Pakhshan Azizi.
On August 6, 2024, Ms. Assadollahi was also deprived of telephone
contact by the prison’s disciplinary committee following her protests
against the execution of Reza Rasaei. She was sent to Evin Prison in
July of last year to serve her sentence. The 26th Branch of the

and eight months. According to Article 134 of the regime’s Punishment
Code, the maximum sentence would be implemented, which is five years for
<assembly and collusion.> On April 16, 2023, a hearing was convened at
Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court to address the charges
against labor activist Anisha Assadollahi. Subsequently, on the eve of
International Workers’ Day, April 28, 2023, she was arrested along with
several other trade union and labor activists by security forces at the

Mahmoud Sadeghi

<<Kurdish Political Prisoner Mahmoud Sadeghi Enduring Eighth Year in
Prison Without Basic Rights
Mahmoud Sadeghi, a Kurdish political prisoner from Kamyaran and
brother-in-law of Heidar Ghorbani, a Kurdish political prisoner who was
executed on December 19, 2021, has been imprisoned for nearly 8 years
and remains deprived of his basic rights. According to a report received
by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights, Mahmoud Sadeghi has spent
2,905 consecutive days in detention, and the status of his case remains
unresolved due to the intrusion of the security agencies of the Islamic
Republic of Iran. Sources indicate that, with only three weeks remaining
until the end of his eighth year in prison, Sadeghi's eligibility for
leave remains uncertain due to the deliberate refusal to consolidate two
separate prison sentences.
Hengaw has learned that Sadeghi has repeatedly requested a transfer to
Kamyaran Prison, but due to obstructions by security agencies through
prison authorities, he has been deprived of this basic right. In early
March 2020, Mahmoud Sadeghi was sentenced by Branch 1 of the Sanandaj
Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Saeedi, to 25 years of
imprisonment on charges of <assisting in rebellion.> In October 2019, he
was sentenced to 30 years in prison by Branch 1 of the Kurdistan
Provincial Criminal Court (Sanandaj) on charges of <assisting in murder
and collaborating with the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan.> This
Kurdish individual was arrested on October 16, 2016, along with his
brother-in-law, Heidar Ghorbani, the executed political prisoner, at his
private residence. After his arrest, Mahmoud Sadeghi was held for three
months in the Sanandaj Intelligence Detention Center, where he endured
psychological and physical pressure before being transferred to Kamyaran
Prison. After five months, he was transferred to Sanandaj Central
Prison, where he remains to this day.>>
