Over 60 years of imprisonment for eleven womens rights activists
NCRI - Womens committee - 29 may 2024 - in Women's News
<<Over 60 years of imprisonment upheld for eleven women's rights activists in Gilan
The NCRI Women’s Committee condemns the criminal sentences
The Revision Court of Gilan upheld the sentences of more than 60 years of imprisonment for eleven women's rights activists in this province. The verdict issued by Branch 11 of the Revision Court of Gilan Province was communicated to the activists on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Zohreh Dadras was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in prison on charges of <forming a group with the aim of disrupting the country's security> and <assembly and collusion with the aim of disrupting national security.> Eight others, Forough Sami Nia, Sara Jahani, Yasamin Hashdari, Shiva Shah Siah, Negin Rezaei, Azadeh Chavoshian, Zahra Dadras, and Matin Yazdani, were each sentenced to six years, one month, and seventeen days in prison. Jelveh Javaheri and Houman Taheri were each sentenced to one year of imprisonment. The NCRI Women's Committee strongly condemns the issuance of these criminal sentences by the judiciary of the misogynist clerical regime. Security forces arrested these eleven women's rights activists in the cities of Rasht, Lahijan, Anzali, and Fooman, on August 16, 2023, on the eve of the anniversary of the 2022 uprising and during a spree of arrests in Gilan province and throughout the country. The detainees were released on bail after spending some time in Lakan Prison of Rasht.>>

<<UN Faces Backlash for Tribute to Late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi
The United Nations General Assembly faced criticism on Thursday for its tribute to late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash on May 19. The session began with a minute's silence, followed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres offering condolences to the families of the victims and the Iranian people. <I wish to assure that the United Nations stands in solidarity with the Iranian people and in the quest for peace, development and fundamental freedoms,> Guterres said. When questioned about the Secretary-General's decision to offer condolences, his spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, defended the gesture. Dujarric emphasized that Guterres has consistently expressed deep concerns about the human rights situation in Iran, particularly issues affecting women. However, he noted that this did not preclude offering condolences when a head of state from a member country dies.
No representatives from Western countries spoke at the tribute.
France and the United States, among others, chose not to send representatives.
Nate Evans, spokesperson for the US delegation, criticized the UN's stance and highlighted Raisi's controversial past. <The UN should be standing with the people of Iran. Raisi was involved in numerous, horrific human rights abuses, including the extrajudicial killings of thousands of political prisoners in 1988,> Evans said. <Some of the worst human rights abuses on record took place during his tenure,> Evans added. Outside the UN headquarters in New York, several dozen protesters voiced their opposition to the Iranian authorities, chanting, <Shame on UN.> On Monday, Narges Mohammadi, the imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate, criticized the United Nations' memorial ceremony for Raisi, calling it <a commemoration of the executions and mass killings.> In a letter from Evin prison, she wrote, "When the governments of the world elevate a blatant human rights violator and butcher from Iran's history to a position of honor, as if mourning a peace-loving and democratic figure, they set a dangerous precedent.
<This emboldens dictators, oppressors, torturers, and executioners worldwide. By opening its doors to commemorate Raisi, the United Nations is effectively shutting the already fragile doors on its human rights foundations, a decision I deeply regret," she said.>>

<<Iran's Former Parliament Speaker Registers for Presidential Candidacy
Ali Larijani, a former speaker of Iran's parliament, registered on Friday as a potential candidate in the Islamic Republic's upcoming presidential election. The presidential election will be held on June 28 to fill the position left vacant by Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter crash this month.
Larijani and other prominent contenders against the late President Raisi were barred from participating in the 2021 election. The 66-year-old Larijani, considered a conservative within Iran's tightly controlled political landscape, has increasingly aligned himself with former President Hassan Rouhani.
Rouhani's administration is best known for brokering a 2015 nuclear deal with a group of world powers. Speaking to journalists, Larijani emphasized, <Solving the issue of sanctions for an economic opening will be among the priorities of diplomacy for Iran.> However, Larijani's candidacy, like all others, must pass the scrutiny of Iran's 12-member Guardian Council.>>

<<Concerns Over the Whereabouts of Alireza Jalilian After Release from Deportation Camp
A Kurdish asylum seeker identified as Alireza Jalilyan from Kuhdasht, Lorestan Province, has been recently transported from Turkish deportation camps after three years of imprisonment, and his current whereabouts are unknown. According to a report received by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights Organization, on Monday, May 27, 2024, Alireza Jalilyan, 41 years old, was transferred from the Kırıkkale camp to an unknown location, causing huge concerns regarding his well being. Three days have passed since Jalilyan left the deportation camp, and there is no information on his whereabouts, leading to speculation about the high possibility of his extradition to Iran. It is notable that this Kurdish asylum seeker had previously faced charges from the judicial and security apparatus of the Islamic Republic of Iran, accusing him of the alleged <murder of the police chief> of Shahabad (Eslamabad-e-Gharb) city, Kermanshah (Krmashan) province. Jalilyan was sentenced to death by the judicial system of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and in the event of extradition, his life will be in grave danger. This asylum seeker was being pursued while attempting to leave Iran and was wounded by security forces in the border areas between Iran and Turkey in 2019. This individual was once again returned to the camp after being transferred to a hospital in Turkey due to threats to his life from the Islamic Republic.>>

<<Sweden Accuses Iran of Using Criminal Networks for Violent Acts
The Swedish Security Service (SAPO) has accused Iran of using criminal networks within Sweden to carry out violent acts against other countries, groups, and individuals. According to SAPO, Iranian targets have included dissident groups, the Iranian diaspora, and specifically, Israeli interests in Sweden. <The Security Service can now confirm that criminal networks in Sweden are proxies that Iran uses,> Daniel Stenling, Head of Counter-Intelligence at the Swedish Security Service, said. <It is very much about planning and attempts to carry out attacks against Israeli and Jewish interests, goals and activities in Sweden,> he said and added that the agency sees <connections between criminal individuals in the criminal networks and individuals who are connected to the Iranian security services.> The accusation comes amid heightened tensions following a suspected shooting near the Israeli embassy in Stockholm this May and the discovery of an explosive device there in January. Swedish authorities have since increased security measures around Israeli and Jewish institutions. Sweden's terrorism threat level remains at 4 on a scale of 5, a level it was raised to in 2023 after Quran burnings sparked outrage and jihadist threats.>>

<<Ghezelhesar Inmate Assaulted After Exposing Abuse
Reza Khazaie, an inmate at Ghezelhesar Prison, faced physical assault by prison guards and subsequent solitary confinement as punitive measures on Thursday. This incident followed the recent publication of a video by a group of inmates, including Khazaie, shedding light on the prison's oppressive conditions. A video recorded by the prisoners themselves shows a gathering in Ward 1, where they speak out against the officers' behavior.
<People are being taken from their cells and killed,. one prisoner says in the video.
A source close to the prisoners elaborated, stating that officers frequently raid cells, searching belongings and destroying them with batons.
Khazaie, who is currently serving a 30-year sentence for drug-related offenses, became a target of retaliation after the video's release. Reports indicate that prison guards subjected him to physical violence and then placed him in solitary confinement as punishment, according to HRANA, a human rights website. <<Political Prisoner with Health Issues Denied Medical Care in Iran Jail
Ali Maghsadjoo, a political prisoner currently serving an 18-month sentence in Tehran's Evin prison, is being denied necessary medical care despite suffering from significant health problems, human rights sources reported. A source close to his family told HRANA, the Iranian Human Rights Activists News Agency, that Maghsadjoo requires treatment for back and knee issues that necessitate specialist attention from a hospital outside the prison. However, prison authorities have consistently refused to grant him access to such facilities. Maghsadjoo was initially detained by security forces in July 2022 and held in the notorious Ward 209 of Evin Prison, a section managed by the Ministry of Intelligence. After three months of detention, he was charged with <propaganda against the Islamic Republic,> <assembly and collusion against national security,> and <collecting and leaking classified data.> He was temporarily released on bail following these charges. Judge Abolghasem Salavati at Branch 15 of the Revolutionary Court of Tehran later sentenced Maghsadjoo to two years in prison. The 48-year-old father of two ultimately received a reduced sentence of 18 months after pleading no contest. He began serving his sentence at Evin Prison in June 2023.>>

<<Iran Plans 70 New Prisons by 2026, Allocates Over $19 Million
The Iranian Bureau of Prisons is set to construct 70 new prisons and penitentiaries across the country, according to a new report by data analysis group Iran Open Data. The new facilities are projected to be operational by 2026, marking a significant expansion of the nation's incarceration infrastructure. The 2023 appropriations bill has at least twelve line items under the <Construction of Prisons> category. More than 1.128 trillion Tomans (approximately $19.1 million) have been allocated for these projects. The Fashafouyeh prison in southern Tehran is already operational.
However, the construction statuses of other planned facilities in Mashhad, Shiraz, Tabriz, Ahvaz, Kashan, Damghan, Semnan, Selmas, and Behbahan remain unknown. The budget includes two general line items: <Construction of 59 Penitentiaries> and <Construction of 100 Temporary Detention Centers,> though further details are not provided. According to one of the rare performance reports from a judiciary institution, 173 <closed prisons> have been decommissioned. The report also states that the Bureau of Prisons currently manages six <open prisons,> 32 detention centers, 25 camps, and 29 reform centers.

<<Iran-Saudi Tensions Simmer as Six Iranian Journalists Expelled
Tensions are on the rise between Iran and Saudi Arabia as Iranian state television reported the expulsion of six journalists from the kingdom. The Iranian crew members were reportedly released after being detained for nearly a week and barred from participating in the upcoming Hajj pilgrimage.
This incident comes despite a year of tentative improvement in relations between the two regional powers, facilitated by Chinese mediation. While Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran reopened their embassies, the situation remains strained. The Saudi embassy in Tehran, set on fire by Basij students in 2016, is currently unusable, and the Saudi diplomats are housed in a hotel. Decades of friction exist between the two countries, particularly concerning the holy sites in Saudi Arabia, which house Islam's holiest sites and will host the Hajj next month. Iranian state television claims the detentions began over a week ago with three journalists arrested while recording a Quran reading in Medina's Prophet Muhammad mosque. The report provided no details on the initial arrest but stated that the men were held for <several hours of questioning> before being transferred to a detention center.>>
