<<Protests in Iran: Supreme leader pardons 'large number' of prisoners
In a first acknowledgement of the scale of the crackdown, Iran's Supreme
leader pardoned <tens of thousands> of prisoners detained in the wake of
mass anti-government protests. Authorities though still have yet to say
exactly how many people have been arrested for their roles in the
demonstrations. The decree, which came on the eve of the anniversary of
the 1979 islamic revolution, also came with a list of caveats as Jennie
Shin explains.>>

Opinion of Gino d'Artali: The demand/slogan of protesters: <Give in or
give way> and the international political and ngo's pressure may start
to bear fruit but as the saying goes 'don't sell the skin of the bear
before you shot it'. Don't give way protesters 'till you've toppled the
regime of khamenei. And to the maybe pardonned ones be aware that it
will have a price: no contacts with the media nor social media.

<<Iran admits 'tens of thousands' detained in protests, says will pardon
some
News center - Iran's supreme leader on Sunday reportedly ordered an
amnesty or reduction in prison sentences for <tens of thousands> of
people detained amid nationwide anti-government protests shaking the
country, acknowledging for the first time the scale of the crack-down.
The decree by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, part of a yearly pardo-ning the
supreme leader does before the anniversary of Iran's 1979 Islamic
Revolution, comes as authorities have yet to say how many people they
detained in the demonstrations. State media also published a list of
caveats over the order that would disqualify those with ties abroad or
facing spying charges - allegations which have been met with wide
international criticism. Khamenei <agreed to offer amnesty and reduce
the sentences of tens of thousands accu-sed and convicted in the recent
incidents,> the state-run IRNA news agency said in a Farsi report. A
later IRNA report carried by its English-language service said the
pardons and commuted sentences were for <tens of thousands of convicts,
including the arrestees of the recent riots in Iran.> Authorities did
not immediately acknow-ledge the discrepancy in the reports. The reports
about the decree offered no explanation for the decision by Khamenei,
whon all mat-ters of state in Iran. However, prisons and detention
facilities alrea-dy had faced overcrowafter years of protests over
economic issues and other matters. Activists imme-diately dismissed
Khamenei's decree. <Khamenei'hypocritical pardon doesn't change
anything,> wrote Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam of the Oslo-based group Iran
Human Rights. <Not only all protesters must be released unconditionally,
but also it is a public right that those who ordered the bloody
repression and their agents are held accountable.> Autho-rities also did
not name any of those who had been pardoned or seen shorter sentences.
Instead, state television continued to refer to the demonstrations as
being a <foreign-backed riot,> rather than homegrown anger over the
September death of Mahsa Amini, an Iranian-Kurdish woman detained by the
country's morality police. Anger also has been spreading over the
collapse of the Iranian rial against the US dollar, as well as Tehran
arming Russia with bomb-carrying drones in its war on Ukraine. More than
19,600 people have been arrested during the protests, according to Human
Rights Activists in Iran, a group that's been tracking the crackdown. At
least 527 people have been killed as authorities violently suppressed
demonstrations, the group said. Iran hasn't offered a death toll for
months. It already has executed at least four people detained amid the
protests after internationally criticized trials.>>

Opinion by Gino d'Artali: The number of arrestees actualy is over
20.500. The number of the people killed does not include the ones who
were killed under torture i.e. or while in secret prisons.

<<Iranian director Jafar Panahi released from jail after going on hunger
strike
Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been released on bail after
starting a hunger strike to protest against his almost seven-month
detention, supporters said on Friday. The director had been arrested
months before the current anti-regime protests erupted, but his
imprisonment became a symbol of the plight of artists speaking out
against the authorities. Panahi has been released from Tehran's Evin
prison <two days after starting his hunger strike for freedom>, the
US-based Center for Human Rights in Iran (CHRI) said on Twitter, while
Iran's reformist Shargh newspaper posted an image of Panahi jubilantly
embracing a supporter. His wife Tahereh Saeedi posted a picture on
Instagram of Panahi being driven from prison in a vehicle. The
prize-winning director was arrested in July and went on a dry hunger
strike on Wednesday to protest his continued detention. <Mr Panahi was
temporarily released from Evin prison with the efforts of his family,
respected lawyers, and representatives of the cinema,> Iran's House of
Cinema, which groups together industry professionals, said in a
statement. The announcement that Panahi was going on a dry hunger strike
sparked a wave of concern across the world about the director, who has
won prizes at all of Europe's top three film festivals. <Today, like
many people trapped in Iran, I have no choice but to protest against
this inhumane behaviour with my dearest possession - my life,> Panahi
had said in the statement published by his wife. <I will remain in this
state until perhaps my lifeless body is freed from prison,> he said.>>

<<Citizens in Iran and Rojhilat continue to face judicial pressure
The Iranian government has been increasing the dosage of its judicial
pressure on the people of Iran and Rojihilat chanting the slogan <Jin,
Jiyan, Azadi> for their freedom. According to reports, more than 367
Kurdish and Baloch citizens have been arreste|d|.
News Center- The protests that started in Iran and Rojhilat following
the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini in mid-September 2022 continue. The
judiciary of the Iranian government has been escalating a crackdown on
the opposition and people from different nationals and religions,
particularly on the activists. According to Iranian human rights
orga-nizations, more than 367 Kurdish and Baloch citizens have been
arrested in the Sistan and Baluchestan Province in the last month. The
reports say that 12 of the arrested and identified people are women.
Reports also say that 185 Baloch people were arrested only in the city
of Zahidan. The Iranian human rights organizations con-cern that the
number of arrestees may be more than they determined.>>

<<Kurdish Revolutionary Youth: Let's fight the patriarchy together
<We condemn the killings of women. Let's fight the patriarchy together,>
said the written statement issued by the Kurdish Revolutionary Youth in
Eastern Kurdistan calling on women's organizations and revolutionary
organizations to unite.
News Center- While the oppressive policies against women in Iran and
Rojhilat continue, more women are killed by the Iranian regime every
day. The Kurdish Revolutionary Youth in Eastern Kurdistan issued a
written statement condemning the killings of women and violence against
women by the regime forces. The statement called on everyone to take to
streets to protest the oppressive policies and violence against women.
'We have no choice but to win'
Recalling that three women named Negin Rostami, Firouzeh Moradi and
Zohra Landi were murdered in the past few days due to the Iranian
government policies, the statement said: <We condemn the killings of
women. Let's fight the patriarchy together. One of the main reasons for
the increase in crime and violence against women is the policies of the
Islamic Republic of Iran. Strengthening women's struggle against the
misogynistic policies, the patriarchal culture and mentality is a must.
In addition, the active women's organizations and revolutionary
organizations must unite to prevent femicide. Strengthening our
revolutionary ties and taking a joint stand against all kinds of
misogynistic policies is important.
'Islamic capitalism seeks victims'
<Negin Rostami was threatened many times by her ex-husband. She fought
for her life at hospital after being set on fire by him. Firouzeh Moradi
was stabbed to death by her brother. These massacres took place after
the five-month revolutionary uprising of the Iranian peop-le. We cannot
separate these massacres from 43 years of massacre policies, torture in
prisons and poverty. Islamic capitalism seeks vic-tims for itself and
its victims are women. Iranian women who have burned their headscarves
have declared that they have burned their headscarves not only against
Iranian laws, but also against all Iranian regime forces in the region.
'We must weave a common struggle'
<Men and women should join hands and weave a common struggle against all
kinds of backward mentality. We can keep watches in groups of two or
three against all kinds of crimes against women city-by-city and
street-by-street for the safety of our lives and women in our
neighborhoods. We have no choice but to win. We must first secure our
lives and our freedom and then win a victory.> >>
